Fun fact: This compilation was created for the documentary 'The Native Americans'. It was Robertson's first time creating music inspired by his Mohawk heritage. His children show up in the album, with son on drums for a few of the songs, and his daughter singing backing vocals for 'Coyote Dance'. The language of the song is a mix of Tutelo and Saponi, which are dialects of the Sioux nation from the Ohio Valley.*

Personal blurb: I had a friend tell me years ago that I seem to be a morning song person, while they were a night song person. I'm not certain I buy into that perspective (because aren't we all a balance of everything?) but I came across this song marked 'Cherokee Morning Song' on YouTube (thank goodness for the hidden features the algorithm unroots) and fell in love with it; the whole album just followed suit.

I think mentioning Robbie Robertson last night got this stuck in my head this morning. 😋

To me, music is the perfect communal place to gather for cultural appreciation. How lucky we are to get to share in the joy this song brings.

I was searching for traditional foods to make with native plants in my area. There’s not a ton of information because the native population mostly didn’t survive, but I did stumble on this absolutely delightful thread:

Some things I’d like to note:

- Eating sochan (which I don’t have in my yard but probably should add in)

- blueberry sauce made with corn bread

- Three sisters soup and the superior taste of half runner or greasy beans (I already have a local variety of field beans on my list for next year, along with squash and corn! I don’t need the high yield in my garden but I do want to focus on extra tasty local traditions).

when I drew this comic 3 years ago I had NO idea how far it would reach. I'm happy to finally share a corrected version with proper abbreviations, and even MORE state names of indigenous origin ♥️

however, the goal of this comic was to inspire people to do your OWN research on indigenous history. To question everything we have been taught, and everything that has been pointedly left out. This erasure, this “forgetting”, of history is not just of the past… it is happening now. - Across so-called Canada, the US, and US-occupied islands, native women are victims of murder at 10-12x the rate of non-native people, and are the most likely to go missing without being searched for by the law. - Native reservations have the highest rates of poverty in the US, with over HALF of tribal homes with no access to clean water (with more joining this list by the year) - Native people are 6-10x more likely to be unhoused than the rest of the population, and native teens suffer suicide rates higher than any other demographic. This list of modern day genocide goes on (thank you for compiling @theindigenousanarchist <3) and yet take a look at those environmental stats!

Native people manage to do SO much for the planet as a whole - thanklessly - and with all this stacked against them. Don't even get me started on kin fighting in south america. Could you imagine if there was help? #landback is resistance to genocide, and it is the key to saving our warming earth.

So look into it and the other hashtags, cuz a cartoon goose ain't a substitute for a proper education. Love to my grandparents who always kept a map of tribal territories of turtle island on their wall, to speaking on our Tsalagi & Saponi heritage. the disconnect from his cultureeeeeeeee sighhhhhhh. no cause like. besides the fact he doesn’t have any connection to it since no one taught him about it, the only person who could have taught him about it would have been his dad, and his dad hates his guts and he ain’t a huge fan of the guy either so he has so many conflicting feelings about his culture since in his mind it’s so connected to his dad. it’s one more thing that makes him like his dad and he hates that, almost making him grateful for the distance sometimes.

but also he wants to know about his culture and family so bad. like where are they from, why aren’t they visiting, what knowledge do they have, what history is running through his veins? he doesn’t get these answers and he knows he won’t. the only thing he has is a tiny bracelet his auntie gave him that he barely remembers getting. she never visit again and he doesn’t get to ask her any of the questions he was too young to have back then

stuck in an in between place where he doesn’t think himself native enough to truly claim that but he doesn’t have anything else to be. messing with his bracelet trying to decipher something from it but he can’t.

this isn’t even mentioning how he would be treated in tulsa due to his background. haliwa-saponi johnny you’ll always be famous to me
