Scams, Fakes, Performance, & Belief
Peaceful Property: On Sale, ep. 4
This week's episode was filled with fakes: online order scams, magicians, compromised democratic processes, and a fake ghost. What reasons do we have to believe in anything? Everything is just an attempt to pull the wool over our eyes while the rugs get pulled out from under us so others can make a quick buck and protect their own hide. Who wants to be fooled by all the shams?
Tumblr media
Pangpang does. Jan Ployshompoo has been fantastic in this role, and she got to devour this episode. Jan specializes in a 'camp' performance style that's easy to undervalue. 'Camp' acting involves overacting the characters and emotions, and lesser actors often approach it with self-awareness and cynicism. Jan understands my favorite note on camp that Susan Sontag wrote.
“56. Camp taste is a kind of love, love for human nature. It relishes, rather than judges, the little triumphs and awkward intensities of “character.” . . . Camp taste identifies with what it is enjoying. People who share this sensibility are not laughing at the thing they label as “a camp,” they’re enjoying it. Camp is a tender feeling.”
The tender affection in Jan's 'camp' hits the themes of this episode home (no pun intended) because she infuses compassion for her over-the-top characters. They get to have range and reasons for their shallowness.
Pangpang's manic overperformance as a social-media influencer has been all about naively buying into every gimmick for herself and from others. Home, probably from his own similarities, points out to Peach how she's doing this as a form of compensation. All along she needed to believe in something because she needed to believe in her brother, to believe when no one else would in his debilitating fear and grief. She didn't need evidence to believe he saw ghosts as he said. She needed to believe she could be there for him even if she didn't know how. Pangpang chooses enchantment because staying true to her brother and her own feelings of loss over their parents are more important than being the winner of some existential argument.
The problem of deception lies at the heart of performance, and I often have a sense that performers and production crews invest a little more when they have to address it (Foei Patara who played Chobkol GAVE!). They have to prove that there is value and truth in the make-believe and assisting people in doing it. For a while, they need their audience to return to the magic of childhood so that they'll clap to show they believe in fairies when Tinkerbell's light begins to fade.
Tumblr media
I loved how Peaceful Property symbolized this return to innocence as an egg, a kind of spiritual rebirth. If we want to believe in the magic of fantasy (Kan), the potential in ourselves (Peach), and the value of others (Home), we have to let go of our guarded cynicism. It won't eliminate the harsher truths of reality. They'll arrive one way or another. But we don't need to be the person who crushes our own dreams or who crush others' dreams just because we're scared of being vulnerable. We need to be people like Pangpang who want to believe and help others on their journey to believing good things are possible.

Play for Today: Under the Hammer (BBC, 1984)
"So. Tell me what happened."
"Well. It was me. I kicked it."
"Any particular reason?"
"I lost my temper."
"Who with?"
"I was having a... discussion about the painting and things to do with the painting with McClaren, sir, and, uh... it got out of hand."
"And you kicked the painting?"
"Yes, sir."
"Instead of kicking McClaren?"
"Yes, sir."
"I wish you'd kicked McClaren."
"So do I, sir."
#under the hammer#play for today#single play#bbc#1984#richard wilson#stephen fagan#classic tv#peter vaughan#michael aldridge#james maxwell#peter bayliss#stanley lebor#robert putt#bernard gallagher#david cardy#christopher fulford#harry ditson#john tallents#jill meager#delightfully drily witty play that's a sort of comedy of manners concerning the people involved in the upcoming sale of a potentially fake#van gogh at an auction house. at the beginning it seems like this might be a kind of upstairs downstairs piece‚ contrasting the lowly#porters who arrange and prepare the exhibition of sale contents with the posh managers and experts who float around inbetween them#that element remains but is sidelined a little to focus more on Vaughan's head porter and one moment of lost control which has far reaching#consequences for everyone. Vaughan is as excellent as he always was‚ a tragic portrait of quiet dignity meeting sheer pigheadedness and#unbending yet naturally servile nature. Aldridge and Maxwell‚ tho‚ are the scene stealers as the owner (?) and head expert of the auction#house respectively‚ a pair of upper class grotesques who nevertheless display surprising nuance and depth as the plot develops#(particularly Maxwell). less politically motivated than many PfTs (not that it is at all apolitical: communism‚ the soviet union‚ wartime#looting and princess Diana all figure into the story) but a genuinely very compellingly told and entertaining play that manages moments#of real sharp comic dialogue alongside a gloomier slant on the inevitability of dishonest dealings at every level

This is something that's a bit Third Rail to say and I want to make it 100% absolutely clear that yes, of course I think women belong in the workplace and anywhere else.
But I think a big problem that lots of NDs have experienced in the last twenty years is that a sub-population of women white collar workers belong to the social set that does most of the social policing of the smallest differences and tries the very hardest to make everyone The Same. And this sub-population has a massive amount of power in many spaces now.
And these people simply were not in the workplace 30 years ago. And 20 years ago, they were in non-profits. Now these people are the dominant tastemakers and the enforcers of corporate and bureaucratic culture. They're the same women who punish women for being NLOGs and the same people who enforce the most standards about Ladylikeness and propriety, via whatever the standard is of that time. They're the same people who as parents would've abused their daughters into "speaking PROPERLY" (which means prettifying everything you say) so how do you expect that dynamic would play out in the office? In the real world? That's their CULTURE.
And now it's yours, whether you want it to be or not. And of COURSE these people see anyone who is Not Them as somehow eugenically dysfunctional because it's always been that way.
It's just that the workplace used to be a more reliable place for a woman to get away from these women, because these women were generally staying home or they were in a volunteer position or in a non-profit. Either these people started working or the culture of what was once much richer people, has spread to the middle class. You'd still deal with other problems at work and male vs female dominated workplaces would present different problems. But the thing is, if you were white collar, you were once upon a time automatically NLOG just for having a job, in many cases. And sometimes that was a feature, and not a bug.

I want to buy a sticker from your shop, but shipping (to Canada) is down as $22 before tax. May I ask why it costs so much to ship a single sticker? Is it Etsy being weird, or does it really cost that much to send an envelope over the border?
I'm not trying to be snarky or passive aggressive or anything, I'm genuinely just kind of befuddled atm.
A fair question honestly! USPS sets the rates for international shipping, and shipping to canada really is about that expensive 😭 I considered sending stickers via envelopes, but 1. if I send them with a stamp (less than $2) they don't have tracking, and etsy Does Not Like That. I gotta send packages with shipping to qualify for star seller, plus it covers your ass in case USPS loses it. and 2. apparently it's illegal to send merchandise internationally in envelopes!! so sadly we're all stuck dealing with the super crazy international rates. I don't like it either because as someone who deals in trinkets, people generally do not want to pay $16 for a charm that costs $12, and they especially don't want to pay that for a sticker that costs $4... I would ABSOLUTELY have way more international sales if USPS wasn't fucking us with the prices but it's out of my control dssdjkfjksdf
I give this advice a lot, but if you don't want to pay international shipping (or just live in a country I don't ship to myself), you can borrow the address of a friend that lives in the states and they can forward it to you! I don't actually know if this is cheaper, but some people have said it is. it's def cheaper for stickers though if your friend uses a stamp!
TL;DR yeah etsy and USPS are Both Weird, sorry ; - ; i assure you i hate it even More than you do lmao
