STAR TREK: THE WRATH OF KHAN I don't believe in a no-win scenario.

I actually do wish Spirk was canon, but I want it to be entirely off-screen and just mentioned by other characters as a matter of fact. Like 'hey, did you know Starfleet only ever made one exception to their fraternization policy, and that was to allow Spock to serve under Kirk when they got married?' Or maybe there's a planet that's populated by Vulcan-Terran hybrids and everyone knows that it was founded by those two because the conditions were good for both species. No, Kirk wasn't the youngest captain in Starfleet, the record was actually beaten by his daughter Saavik two decades later. People say she struggled to live up to her parents' fame, poor thing. A hundred years later Kirk and Spock's messages to each other are published in two tomes. The High Council deems them so inappropriate that they're banned on Vulcan, et cetera.
Any depiction of Spirk on screen would be inherently disappointing because it's straight up impossible to live up to sixty years of fan-made content. The only way to make it good is to incorporate it into the lore and arouse even MORE speculation and fan-made content.
Feel free to disagree, though...if you could make Spirk canon, how would you do it?

The real reason Saavik stayed on Vulcan with Amanda at the start of The Voyage Home is that in 1986 San Francisco, with her curly mullet, she would have been way too beautiful, it would have been a massive distraction while they needed to be unnoticed-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just imagine her with a little bandana to hide her ears in the streets, people would have been asking for her number left and right.
"What number are they referring to Admiral , my Starfleet ID?"
"I'll explain later Savvy..."

i mean ... if i was the stepdad to a little half-vulcan girl who went through similar childhood trauma as me, had a similar starfleet career as me, was just as much of a cunt bitch as my husband, and who was a close friend of my late son ... and she knew how hard it was for me to lose him ... and was the one to comfort me after his passing ... if that little girl showed me her son, my grandson, and he looked like my dead husband who raised her around the eyes ... i would also smile like that. No pon farr pregnancy plot needed. just a continued legacy of loved children.

I don't think Unification "made K/S canon" so much as it re-iterated exactly what Jim and Spock have had this whole time: two parts that will never be truly separate, two halves of the whole, gentle love for each other even at the end. T'hy'la.
We saw that in the 'This Simple Feeling' scene, we saw that in Wrath of Khan, we saw that in nigh-on every interaction between them in the original series! Even people who don't think they're in love (somehow) know that they love each other, and that's why Unification works - having them kiss human-style or confess love or some other overt canonisation of the Premise risks at best feeling cheap and at worst risks inciting cries of pandering to fans or ruining the integrity of Kirk and Spock's relationship. As fun as it would be, it wouldn't feel true to the characters.
Unification didn't make K/S canon. It established that it was canon the whole time.

so. i. so. ???? so shatner and the roddenberry estate collaborated to make a short film where kirk, trapped outside of time, is able to visit spock on his deathbed, giving them both closure re each’s other’s deaths, and also they held hands (vulcan kissed)????? and that’s the whole thing????? What!

765874 Unification DEEP DIVE!
There's a lot to unpack on this little video, including lots not at all explained in it and only behind the scenes. Is it dreamy and ambiguous, or is there a solid background?
First of all, is Kirk dead and in heaven? Is he alive? A hologram? The answers are shown in the intro, prior 765874 videos and built from Easter Eggs in Picard season 3. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Kirk's remains in the Section 31 Daystrom vault. The readout mentioned something called "Project Phoenix". James T. Kirk has been resurrected.

The park Kirk starts out in? It's not just any park. It's inside the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-J, just look at the Roddenberry Archive Ent-J interior. We're in the 26th century, that's why Saavik looks so old. And speaking of Saavik, the Roddenberry Archive say they consider the Vulcan's Heart novel canon. Which means Saavik is Spock's wife. And the Vulcan man next to her? That's Sorak, the son she had with Spock following the Pon Farr in Star Trek III, according to OTOY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It gets weirder. The old man wearing a white TNG movie era dress uniform? He's credited as "Crusher". That's an elderly version of our time travelling Wesley, dressed as he was in Star Trek Nemesis.
Tumblr media
This sinister character, who gives Kirk his badge back and takes him through time? Temporal soldier Yor, from Discovery 3.09. From the Kelvin timeline, he jumped forward in time and across timelines during the 30th century temporal wars, eventually resulting in sickness and an agonising death. Here he takes Kirk from the 26th century Enterprise-J to 23rd century New Vulcan in the Kelvin timeline.
Tumblr media
But why was Kirk resurrected? Just to zip though time and be with Spock at his death?
And what role does Yeoman Colt (whose Starfleet serial number these shorts are named for) play? She's seen in all of them, even the start of this one in a Kelvin Universe uniform looking at Project Phoenix stuff. I guess time will tell...

"I didn't realize this moment took place in the distant future. And so there I was, looking at myself in the mirror. It's hard to explain. I just remember thinking 'Oh my god Saavik. Saavik lived a good life. This woman lived a good life, she had purpose. Her life had meaning' it's like life had been good to this character."
