Ukrainian fighter jet carries 4x R-73 AAMs. Despite the numerical superiority, the Russian aviation has failed miserably, losing the battle for air supremacy in Ukraine already at the first stage of the war, when Ukraine did not yet have modern air defense systems. Ukraine's old Soviet-era Mig-29s and Su-27s are quite successful against the formidable modern Russian air force. Russian aviation pilots are only able to successfully wage war against defenseless civilian targets...

Russia would not attack NATO, but F-16s will be shot down in Ukraine — Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared late Wednesday night that his country had no plans for any NATO country or intentions to attack Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic, according to Russian media.

Putin also warned that if the West supplied Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, they would be shot down by Russian forces. Speaking to Russian air force pilots, the president claimed that the US-led military alliance had expanded eastwards to Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, reiterating that Moscow had no plans to attack any NATO state.

We have no aggressive intentions towards these states. The idea that we will attack some other country — Poland, the Baltic States, and the Czechs are also being scared — is complete nonsense.

Responding to the question about the F-16 jets that the West had promised to send to Ukraine, Putin noted that such aircraft would not change the overall situation.

“If they supply F-16s, and they are talking about this and are apparently training pilots, this will not change the situation on the battlefield. And we will destroy the aircraft just as we destroy today tanks, armoured vehicles and other equipment, including multiple rocket launchers.”

US aid to Ukraine, delayed by pro-Putin House Republicans in the US, has caused European NATO members to speed up their own assistance to the Ukrainians.

Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren says Ukraine should receive its first F-16 fighter jets this summer as Europe pushes to aid Kyiv amid complications sparked by a stalled aid package in the U.S. Congress. Ollongren told RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service during a visit to Kyiv on March 21 that a plan to deliver 24 F-16s jets is on track, with the first aircraft coming from Denmark. "I think we are on track to see deliveries, first Danish this summer, and then we're going to scale up," she said while declining to give the exact number of planes involved in the first delivery. "We know that we will start with the Danish F-16s, that is now in our planning and in the Ukrainian planning. And in the end, I mean, it doesn't matter anymore. If it's a Dutch or Danish or Norwegian F-16 because [the planes are] going to be Ukrainian." The arrival of the fighter jets will be a long-awaited development to help Kyiv fill a crucial hole in its defense capabilities. Russia has used its more advanced and more numerous jets to repeatedly bomb Ukrainian cities, slow its counteroffensive, and threaten its ships exporting grain crucial to its economic survival, making Kyiv’s acquisition of modern U.S. jets a key ingredient to its successful defense of the country.

There is also talk in Europe of imposing tariffs on Russian grain.

North Korean Mikoyan MiG-29

North Korea is believed to operate an estimated 35 MiG-29 fighters. It is one of, if not the most, modern aircraft they currently have in service.

According to arms transfer databases, North Korea possesses air-to-air missiles manufactured by Russian company Vympel NPO. Specifically R-73 (AA-11 Archer), R-60 (AA-8 Aphid), and R-27 (AA-10 Alamo) missiles.

North Korea is believed to have MiG-29B and MiG-29SE variants.
