I'm curious about people's levels of familiarity; I intend no judgment or elitism and it's absolutely fine not to be a completionist, btw. I didn't think I would've intended to have read them all at age 25; it just sort of happened that after I passed the halfway point in the middle of 2023, I came out of a reading slump and was motivated to finish. Fwiw I consider myself a hobbyist (I am not involved in academia or professional theater) but I realize that that label is usually attributed to people with less experience.

I also have always loved seeing other bloggers' Shakespeare polls where they put certain plays or characters up against each other, but I'm often left wondering if it's really a 'fair' fight all the time if you're putting up something like Hamlet or Twelfth Night against one of the more obscure works, like the Winter's Tale. It's not a grave affront to vote in those polls if you don't know every play, but I am curious about it.

Please reblog for exposure if you vote; I would appreciate it a lot. Also feel free to elaborate on your own Shakespeare journey in tags, comments, reblogs, because I love to hear about other people's personal relationships to literature.

Damian: [gripping the counter] You’re supposed to be my ally!

there's nothing quite like a random piece of media you consumed ages ago and loved at the time but kinda forgot about after coming back to you years later absolutely out of nowhere like "you thought you could forget about me? don't worry! i'm here to be the only thing you care about yet again" and then the cycle repeats

it's fun but also painful because the intensity of the obsession revived makes it hard to focus on anything else like someone get these fictional people out of my head please

1. Song of the year?

hm. there are a lot of songs that came out this year that I like, so picking a favorite one... maybe new order t-shirt by the national. or the narcissist by blur. I was a very big fan of the new gorillaz album but it's so hard to pick a standout song from that, they're all so good. oh, and the new mitski album ofc, so very good.

4. Movie of the year?

the only 2023 movie I watched was blackberry and it's. so very good. I've been meaning to get around to watching the big movies like oppenheimer and killers of the flower moon, though.

13. How was your birthday this year?

my birthday is always so overwhelming but it was very meh this year. my friends don't really remember it so it's hard, very much a kendall roy in too much birthday type thing. it's in february so it's hard to really remember it at the end of the year 😭

I can't help but find Faulkner's heart to heart with his dad a little funny Only and Specifically because of the part where Faulkner is like "Dad I killed Charlie." and his dad is like "No son I'm also to blame for Charlie's death because I left you boys alone."

No. No no, Mr. Faulkner's Dad, very sweet very kind but your son wasn't being, like, poetic. This wasn't a "We all failed to save Charlie" kind of killed him. This is the literal kind. No yeah this is the "Little Richard held Charlie's head under the water til the bubbles didn't come up no more" kind of fratricide. Yeah we looked it up and it's second-degree murder if not first-degree murder. Yeah sorry I know, easy mistake.
