oneshot: out of character -> ao3 link reader x mer animatronic!moon đ word count: 3,403
Working at a Fazbear animatronic theme park hadn't really been your dream, but it is your current reality.
At first, you were starry-eyed. Clocking in each day at a place that brings out the magic of imagination. Revamped from its first attempt that mysteriously burnt down after a rigorous police investigation, inexplicably refurbished into a half VR game center, half water-park. Youâd bet the money that fuels such an over-the-top offshoot for the franchise pumps in from the Pizzaplex the next city over.
The ambition of the two owners who picked up the business manifested into a massive aquarium at the center, home to mechanized sea life. Animatronics of all shapes and sizes, perfect replicas of their real life counterparts. Plus or minus a more vivid, appealing, toy-selling color palette.Â
The multi-level aquarium showcases beautiful spectacles of engineering that allow all creatures of the deep to intermingle without the limitations of reality. Youâve stood in the tunnels that wind throughout the first floor on the slow moving tracks before, looking around with awe and wonder at the flittering sharks and jumping dolphins. A whale would float by now and then, casting a great shadow across the tunnels as everyone hurried to snap a photo.
Ferry rides are offered at an exuberant price to float atop the largest of the decorative tanks, where a stationary mermaid animatronic waves with a pleasant smile. You stopped going to the ferry rides after they replaced the human staff with the admittedly rather creepy, blank-staring bots and their pre-recorded voice lines.Â
Despite all the splendor surrounding you, the position of 'general maintenance' tends to become lackluster after cleaning up one too many barf piles near the food courts. Or being tasked with fishing cellphones out of the tops of tanks, enduring the hellish fury of whichever parent you had the misfortune of relaying the lost or damaged items policy to. Rattling off of a lengthy speech of âwe wont pay for this,â in corporate, smiley, customer-service-y terms.Â
You sigh, pushing a heavy mop forward as music thrums through your ear buds. You take a moment to rest your head against your curled up hands at the top of the handle, listening to the last few seconds of the track, before popping the ear buds out one by one and shoving them into your jacket pockets.Â
The slow drip of a faucet welcomes you back to cold, harsh reality. The last hour or more of your life was spent sopping up the ick that countless shoes tracked in and out the restroom facility throughout the day.Â
By now, the sun is setting over the horizon line. You always pick up the latest shifts in the day. The overnight security staff are your regular acquaintances. Youâve bribed the main desk guy into being your ride-or-die with sugary, outdated donuts. Â
There's a ding on your pager. You lean the broom handle on the brick wall, which is plastered with Chica and Roxanne themed posters that encourage handwashing. As you rest the mop, you falter to catch it from falling over, as the damn thing could never just stay put. Once youâve prevented the disaster of the mop tipping over, you check the pager again, missing the glitching and rearranging of the letters on screen.Â
Honestly, the technology is considerably retro compared to what's out on the market; looking more like a terminal youâd see in a sci-fi movie, or perhaps a calculator that would be chucked at a classmate in second grade.Â
What greets you is an open-ended service ticket for the Haunted Shipwreck. You quirk an eyebrow. The exhibit was usually cleaned diligently by daytime staff in preparation for opening in the evening. Spruced up by the folks who worked at the bar, and the poor teenage saps who had to stand in the queue lines scanning tickets. The ârideâ was part of the finale of the virtual reality storyline that guests could pay a premium price to experience, connecting all the dots of the theme parkâs attractions together.Â
Plus, it was the only place that served alcohol after five pm. The specialty drinks are so neon and vivid that the sugar content has to be astronomical.Â
Parents flock there like it is truly an oasis in a kiddy-park desert.Â
Scratching at your head, you walk in a circle as you read the details, or lack thereof. The ticket reads, 'Exhibition needs spot cleaning.' Spot cleaning? A whole exhibit? Your thumb hovers over the button to accept the task. It beats mopping bathroom tiles any day.
You wring out the mop into its bucket, and begin the tedious task of ferrying cleaning supplies from one area to the next. On your way out, you sling the heft of a tool bag over your shoulder.Â
_____________________________________
The scent of lemony freshness follows you in hot pursuit. You shove open the doors to the exhibit with a âHello?â, expecting another person or two from the maintenance crew to have accepted the job. Cleaning a whole attraction on your lonesome did not bode well for the âno overtimeâ policy.Â
The response you get is absolute silence.
You feel along the wall for a light switch, and then remember that this is an amusement park, not a hotel. The controls for the areaâs lights are all in the breaker room out back. Locked away with a key that is not in your possession. With a sigh, you fish out a flashlight from your tool bag and continue to wheel your cart in.
Without music blaring through the hidden speakers, or patrons milling through the bar onto the dance floor, the main atrium of the ride feels as haunted as its namesake. Grumbling, you pull out your pager and look down. The screen is blank, as if the task had never existed at all.Â
Before you can question the disappearing act, spotlights turn on. A deafening click causes you to jolt and nearly drop the device. Â
You look up, and are face to face with the animatronic who prowls the exhibit. Your lungs temporary pause all function as your heart works in overdrive.Â
Above you is an elaborate trick of puppetry. A skeletal siren with a face as white as bone is frozen in place, with its arms outstretched as if it had been reaching towards you in the darkness to swipe you up. Thin, transparent plastic that shimmers like true fish scales acts as webbing between its sharp claws.
A billowing tail snakes like a serpent atop most of the areaâs ceiling, weaving around the lighting system. The tip of its tailfin is curled around the rafters, as if supporting its weight. But that couldnât be true; as a large cord connects into its back. Following the tubing leads to the pulley system which keeps it on predictable tracks.Â
One eye is cyan. The other eye is entirely a deep crimson, casting an eerie glow across your face. The eye with the cyan pupil trembles.Â
âJeez, you scared me!â You say, too shocked to catch yourself before talking with an inanimate puppet.
The robotic siren, Moon, stares at you, not budging from its post. The lack of movement makes it feel more and more like a statue. You feel silly for speaking to it directly.Â
But you remember: there's a person whose entire job is to spend the day operating these guys. To keep them lifelike, same as the free-roam 'animatronics' that are actually just staff in sweaty old mascot suits. Learning the truth as an employee had dimmed the magic of the theme park, but you still admit that it is an impressive work of robotics, especially considering the aquarium.Â
âAre you still on for the night? Rideâs shut down,â You ask, pushing through the lingering fear you felt from the brief scare. During off-season the park closes earlier and is open about half the days, meaning that Haunted Shipwreck is mostly operational Friday and Saturday. Today is a Wednesday. You didnât expect the elusive staff who controls the two mermaid animatronics to be on duty.Â
In response, the animatronic's massive tail slaps against the faux rocky terrain that decorates its elaborate enclosure. Moon lands back on the main stage it perches on during performances. Without the constant spray of dry ice to create the illusion of fog, and the bright red lighting, the siren lacks the intimidating flare you expect.
âWell, I'm here to clean. That's all.â You rest your hands at your sides, settling your thumbs into the belt loops.Â
Moon peers at you. Then it rolls over onto its back. The wires controlling its electronics flatten against the surface as it settles into place. You blink as you stare at a 'belly-up' fish. Its hands rest into a t-rex, claw-like position at its sides, as if it wasnât used to laying down, either, and instantly felt awkward.Â
âOh,â You exclaim, wrapping your head around the vague task you accepted. At last, you understand who â or what, needs cleaning: the animatronic itself. Thereâs gum stuck to its sculpted fins and a few pieces of paper wedged into the joints that segment its torso from its abdomen, limiting its range of motion.Â
A cruel prank, regardless of the recipientâs ability to feel discomfort.Â
You set your tool bag down on the floor and stumble up the plastic molded rocks, right past the âDO NOT CLIMBâ sign. All things considered, the âspot cleaningâ looks like an easy project to finish off your shift.Â
You sit on your knees next to the animatronic.Â
You start by pulling the paper jammed into its torso hinge out. You brace a palm against its side, and carefully tug. Hearing the papers tear makes you curse softly under your breath.Â
The animatronic watches, and then bends its torso hinge away, giving you easier access to pull the shredded bits out.Â
You begin to notice that all the papers jammed inside the robot are actually posters and pamphlets that you can pick up for free at the photo kiosk a room over. Strange.Â
Taking a second to indulge your curiosity, you inspect one of the postcards.Â
The front of the card is split into two; the daytime half, Sun, spritely and bright on the left. And his cursed form that haunts the seas at night, Moon, in an ominous dark silhouette on the right. A few of these are even lenticular prints that you can shift back and forth, but those have to be bought at the complimentary gift shop at the end of the ride. Â
The depicted dark, jagged silhouette of Moon is a sharp contrast to the docile animatronic beside you. Existing to be âvanquishedâ time and time again, by brave patrons, in order to free Sun from the shackles of an evil witchâs hex.Â
The witch character is set to debut at long last in a few months.
You find yourself smiling at the memories of watching the performance for the first time; the smoke and mirrors of the robots being switched out on stage to masquerade as one feat of engineering. The silly story never fails to be engaging, with how much production was poured into making Sunâs character so lifelike and memorable.
Now that you think about it, you wonder why Moon never got the same treatment. You look up to see that the âcursed sirenâ on your mind is staring right at you, almost expectantly. Beneath its chassis where your palms rest is a soft, insistent hum of machinery, fans set to medium gear. It points to a piece of paper you missed under its arm socket. You lean closer to dig in, their gaze burning into the back of your head.Â
The silence as you work on the clean-up becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Even more so when you consider that whoever is tasked with puppeting Moon is still up in the server room, no doubt working past their shiftâs end to make your job easier by maneuvering the siren this way and that.Â
Though, you wonder why the puppeteer didn't just meet you at Haunted Shipwreck themself to talk it through. Must be some kind of NDA, or lack of a remote control.
By the time you are scraping gum off glittering scales, you decisively break the ice with, âY'know, Im surprised. I thought you'd be home by now,â beginning the idle, one-sided chatter. Just because you are here on business, doesnât mean the exchange had to be so clinical. Your quiet companion shows that its listening by flicking the long fin that adorns its head. Bright cyan tracks your every movement with what feels like intense curiosity.
While you work, you take out the pager to check on your tasks for the night. In an instant, Moon swipes it, moving faster than you can comprehend. They slither away from you with shocking speed, cable attached to its back whirring to keep up with the momentum.Â
âHey! Give that back!â You reach up, fingertips brushing off the smooth scales upon its long, imposing tail. Up above, the animatronic fiddles with the pager. Frustration ripples off it as its hands clunkily tap away at the tiny, human-sized keyboard.Â
âDon't break it, c'mon, it'll come out of my paycheck!â You swat at the robot whose mid-air. You gasp at the audacity it has to curl its tail inward and away from you. An unfair game of keep-away.Â
Moon turns the screen of the pager back to you. 'Thank you,' is typed out in simplistic, boxy letters. You blink, staring at the screen as the pager is gingerly placed back in your hands, claws ghosting across your arms. The siren pulls back quickly. Moon fidgets with the hem of its costuming, a subtle act of nerves that trips you up even worse.
âYouâyou're welcome.â You stumble on your words, not quite sure why the sentiment is so shocking. But it feels like it came from the robot itselfâwhoever ran these guys was committed to staying in character. Even to other staff. You admire the dedication.
The robot leers down at you. Pupils burning, an unsettling lack of expression except for a wide-eyed stare that never relents the pressure it exerts. A hand extends out, and it takes a moment for you to realize that its asking for the pager back. Dumbstruck, you comply without a second thought. The robot taps away at the keyboard, dwarfed by its palms. You hear the click-click-click of the backspace button as it shakes its faceplate.
The pager returns to you. After all its effort, only one word is on the screen: 'Again.'
âAgain?â You repeat aloud, looking up at Moon with confusion. The robot continues to fidget, before nodding so quickly in confirmation, that you are worried you'll need to send in a ticket to fix its neck hinge. That sort of job goes to the on-sight mechanics who the company contracts, not a regular maintenance guy like you. âYou'd... like me to stop by, again?â You guess, and Moon's nerves boil over. The tracks in the ceiling creak as the creature 'swims' all around you, showcasing flashes of glittering fins and the faintest glint of sharp fangs beneath its flowing collar. With the blur of violet, magenta, and crimson swirling around you, its like being in the middle of a shark swarmâ without any of the fear.Â
Because you take the boundless enthusiasm to mean, 'yes.'
âOkay, okay. I will,â You laugh at the strange antics, charmed by how earnest the supposedly wicked siren can be. You donât know much about Moon's character here at the park; he was intentionally left mysterious to add to the villainous flare. Or perhaps, to excuse the lack of forethought into an antagonist designed for a theme park. So, to see him instead doing several aerial laps around the perimeter of the shipwreck, you can't help but find them endearing.
Your pager dings, reminding you that there is twenty minutes before your shift ends, and one bathroom facility left half-mopped in your haste.Â
âIt was nice meeting you,â You hesitateâyou have no idea who this person is. You stare into the lens of the animatronicâs eyes, pondering who was watching you back on the camera feed.Â
Maybe the two of you could get lunch sometime off the clock, away from the prying of corporate eyes. Perhaps they are nervous to break character. You glance to the security camera in the corner, and back, â...Moon,â you decide to call them by the character they play, for the time being.Â
The siren lurches toward you.Â
You reel back, almost slipping on the plastic rocks.
Spindly limbs wrap around you, catching you from your fall, andâOh.
You blink, struggling to keep up. The wretched siren of the coast is giving you a hug. The fabric of its costume sleeves is silky and smooth, and almost bundles you up like a tarp.  Â
âO-okay, then.â You pat at the back of the animatronic. Its staring at you so seriously with massive, leering eyes, that you are struggling not to buckle under the stress. The pressure Moon exerts is light, but spikes your heart rate regardless. Your feet are almost off the ground, balancing on the heels of your work boots as you tilt back. You arenât looking to go for a swim, or to be put on medical leave from a concussion.Â
âThatâs, um, very sweet, thank you, Moon.â You tap its arms next to indicate youâre ready to be let go of. You find your cheeks flushing in embarrassment, wondering if the animatronicâs puppeteer thinks its amusing to scare you with this level of whiplash. Maybe it is funny to them, to make the theme park's aloof villain act all cuddly for one-on-one exchanges.Â
âThere we goânice and easy,â you find yourself narrating, as the siren deliberately sets you back down on the floor. Not back onto the rocks; no, it cranes you over to main floor, where you run a much smaller risk of falling on uneven terrain.Â
Walking over to collect your belongings, you shrug your tool bag over your shoulder, and place a hand on the handle of your cleaning cart.
The animatronic waves you off, watching with interest as you shove your way out the door. A glimpse of the outside world, the low lights of the shut-down park and the infinite expanse of the night sky.
You stop in the doorway, prolonging the moment, âHave a good night, Moon.â The animatronic stays perfectly still, playing its role. Poised with elegance and a threatening aura. The sight leaves you with chills, although you hardly had reason to fear the animatronic, or its friendly puppeteer.
The door closes.
A pause.Â
Moon stays put until they can no longer hear the roll of your cart. Then it springs up. Pacing back and forth, tail moving as smoothly as kelp in the current, weaving through decorative pillars that sell the illusion of being underwater, trapped in a shipwreck. The sliding of the wire on its tracks plays a symphony as it maneuvers around. Feelingâfeeling, like it did something right, by doing something terribly wrong. The sensation was so complex that it keeps cataloguing every second.
Moon couldn't believe that tampering with a maintenance ticket actually worked. A small, small chance that anyone would pick up the task he made upâ jamming postcards into its segments in a fury to make the objective believable, once someone had actually said 'yes.'
The cord above squeals, and Moon realizes it needs to relax, less it break its ability to move within its small, small world.Â
Settling back down, the siren sits on its lonely perch with a glimmer of hopeâthat you'll be back again the next night, and the next, and the next. After all, you spoke to them with such ease. Most everyone pretends heâs nothing more than a glorified stage prop. Doomed with an underutilized, elaborate AI on the same caliber as all the others in the park, who roam freely. Who get to interact, learn, and grow daily; who get to make friends and play so many games. Â
Until next time, they'll work on their communication. Study the humans who walk through its exhibit closer and closer. Experiment with how to evoke emotions beyond fear.
Their tail thumps, eager to continue daydreaming throughout the rest of its cycle spent awake.

California Crisis: Gun Salvo
I watched the 1986 OVA California Crisis, and it was really good! This anime, if you have heard of it all (which is unlikely), is famous for two things. One is its look:
Which in anime form did not exist before, and has not existed since. When you research âCalifornia Crisisâ in English the source everyone pulls from is this essay by longtime industry man Fred Patten, and he describes it as âthe over-solarized art style most commonly associated with the commercial artist Patrick Nagel, who was very âinâ at the time.â I believe him on that being an influence - he worked with the creators after all - and my primary documents from said creators are quite limited; but those that I have never mention him. They certainly were aiming for Americana - but what is causing this unique look is the use of thick, black outlines on the inner shading of the characters (something Nagel doesnât really do), which producer Yoshikazu Tochihira mentions as a common technique used on vehicles in anime at the time. Given how heavily cars and âcopters feature in this, I think the look was also sort of its own idea to create stylistic cohesion between the key parts.
I am not going to say it always works - on our main girl Marcia it is sketch, those eyes man:
But for our boy Noera it comes out a lot nicer:
He has less demand to be âtypical animeâ; bishoujo canât blend here but surfer bum absolutely can.
You get used to it over time though, and it excels at capturing the idealized West Coast aesthetic. In particular, by being ânot animeâ it really helps you feel like it is somewhere else than Japan. The OVA is filled with long panning shots of detailed Los Angeles streets and beaches, named restaurants and garbled English menu items aplenty. Our friend Fred Patton - who isnât a fan - comments that âAnimation fans at the time said, only half-humorously, that it looked like the main purpose of the video was for a handful of Japanese animators to come to California and take a road trip from San Diego to Los Angeles for location shots.â But that never happened - this was made on a shoestring budget, and according to the same source as before no such site visit occurred. Instead, reference material was gathered by âsearching bookstores, travel agencies, libraries, and even the American Cultural Centerâ, and it was a lot of work to get the details even half-right from that. Stop spreading lies, Fred Patton! Wait until you get my strongly worded comment on your blog, I donât care if you passed away 6 years ago (RIP an absolute legend), get your facts straight!
Aided in this sense of immersion is the OVA's second source of notoriety: the absolutely banging city pop soundtrack by pop star Miho Fujiwara. The OP, Streets Are Hot, lives up to the name, straight fire:
youtube
And while not as peak, the rest of the OST doesnât disappoint. Anime Youtuber STEVEM has a video on California Crisis that digs into the music side, as the history of city pop is absolutely his jam; for me I will just comment that it is a little lost now how western city pop was in Japan. Today it is of course âpeak Japanâ after its 2010âs retro internet boom, but if you listen to pop music from 1970âs Japan you still hear a lot of blending of western musical sensibilities and more traditional Japanese vocal stylings and instrumentation. City pop was one of the earlier genres to fully shed the past and embrace synth instrumentation and modern vocal approaches. And the aesthetic often pulled specifically from California - these are not album covers that scream Tokyo:
All of this is to say that this OVA is not only of its time, but it also embodies its time - a paean to the California Dream of the 80âs Tokyo youth:
Fucking vibes, man, for this alone the OVA really hits for me. Though of course, for all the Americana it is still an anime:
(Which by the way, Marcia rides a motorcycle on the highway and is clearly like 17, so Noera's rejection of an offer of sex here is more linguistic evidence for the bifurcated meaning of the word âloliconâ to refer to both actual prepubescent eroticization but also any preference for âyouthâ over âmaturityâ in typologies of femininity, intersecting with the bishoujo boom of th- okay okay, put the gun down, Iâll move on, geezâŚ)
Sadly for California Crisis, its contemporary audience disagreed quite strongly with this being a symbol of the era; it was a huge flop. The OVA was the flagship project of a new anime venture by producer Hiromasa Shibazaki called Hiro Media Associates, and that shoestring budget was some very thin string. Shibazaki was launching his own anime+ magazine at the time, Globian (as seen in the links above), which was used to advertise their works - but towards that goal California Crisis only ever produced a single promotional image, which you see utilized everywhere it is mentioned:
So it just didnât have the resources behind it to draw in a crowd. And the crowd it did draw in, best I can tell, wasnât enthused; the art style was off-putting, the plot itself is a bit of a meandering mess, the long panning shots are ~vibes~ yes but also ~budget~ and obviously so, and the ending is a bit of a vague question mark. It was supposedly going to have a sequel, but Hiro Media, and Globian alongside it, closed shop soon after it was released, leaving audiences feeling that it was unfinished.
I wonât begrudge anyone their taste, or pretend it is not a very uneven work. However, I want to redeem the OVAâs core narrative from its reputation; I think it is honestly great, and it absolutely does not need a sequel. So letâs get into the plot - this is a story of a 20-something bar hand Noera, who runs into motorcycle-riding teen Marcia alongside a quasi-sentient UFO orb that just crash landed on earth. It beckons telepathically to be taken to Death Valley, a call which Noera resists but Marcia commits to heart-and-soul. Along the way the military, the CIA, the Soviets, every deep state boogeyman you can think of, all try to stop them, car chases and gunfire akimbo. Our duo bond, eventually they succeed, and the alien gives off a Kubrickian abstract flash of light and then vanishes - roll credits.
Ignore all the details, the mechanics, the CIA, all that shit. Puzzling and unsatisfying when you are watching it as a 17 year old, sure, but you are smarter now, you can separate the wheat from the chaff. Instead, why does Marcia want to follow a random alien orb into Death Valley?
Hilarious levels of on-the-nose buzzword dropping, oh sure. But behind that? Marcia is a teen, looking for meaning. She watches TV, reads books, dreams of being a hero, a protagonist, and this is it - the call of adventure! She is being offered the slot of main character and she isnât going to turn it down. She literally name-drops Close Encounters of the Third Kind as part of her motivation, she is story-brained. When you first hear this line, you are like Noera, you eye roll it. But on reflection there is nothing more American than being the center of the universe - it truly is the American Dream.
But Marcia is not the main character of this story - the singular promotional image is lying to you. Noera is as well, and he has wisdom she doesnât. Noera lives in the city fringe on a low wage service job, driving a beat-up Chrysler he presumably maintains himself. A blue collar man of habit, a himbo before it was hip. He follows Marcia to protect her, he casually rejects her post-car-chase adrenaline-rush-induced sexual advances. And, while they are escaping the military by hiding in a bar, he runs into an old high school friend Jack - who happens to be one of those military agents!
We have been seeing this guy the whole OVA, running the entire alien hunt operation. Top of the class, super genius, going places. Noera is unphased, and he and Jack reminisce about gags and girls from the old days. Noera congratulates his friend for âgetting outâ of his hometown, as it were, and then plot-duty calls, Jackâs real life calls, and he has to leave. As he does, Noera calls out to him, âCome visit me!":
And Jack leaves without saying anything:
Because it isnât highschool anymore, right? This guy is in the Big Leagues, he isnât gonna schlep out to some podunk bar in Long Beach because a dude he used to help do his geometry homework offers him a dri-
Oh, nevermind! Because none of that shit matters, right? We are all just dudes, letâs share a beer.
Marcia stares unaware through the entire scene by the way:
This is Noeraâs âculminating momentâ for his story, and she doesnât track it.
Chasey chasey fighty fighty Death Valley journey and Marcia delivers the orb, she wins, with Noeraâs help she saves the alien. And so it pulses out a sparkly rainbow, something that could maybe be interpreted as a thank you, and then leaves - giving them absolutely nothing to show for their efforts. Marcia is left on a panning shot, shocked and disappointed, holding a now broken piece of useless glass. She was never the main character of anything. She just ran an errand.
This is such good American Dream commentary! It ends the way all stories about the American Dream end - with it being a sham. Because it is. Itâs all narrative, all marketing, all the outside trappings of something disconnected from the inner reality. Since this isnât a midcentury novel but an anime OVA, the trappings of success arenât a detached suburban home and 2.5 kids - it's being the hero of an action adventure epic. But fiction is fiction no matter the genre. Marcia doesnât get that yet - but Noera already did before the VHS tape began to play. And Marciaâs budding realization is paralleled with Noera's own showcase of the socio-economic dilemmas that more typically define the genre - success doesnât change who you are or what you need.
Once you step back from the sci fi spycraft stuff - which admittedly trails off - and see the themes, the ending is perfect, a sequel would totally ruin this. This is the best 80âs anime OVA commentary on the American Dream done through an otaku lens around. Definitely beats all the others in that category, for sure. Totally.
Anyway if you wanna fight me about my hot take meet me at the Waffen SS bar in 1980âs LA where I will be getting the shit kicked out of me for yelling my center-left political opinions while tipsily standing on the bartop:
All that research and I still have no explanation for this shot.

Seven Stupid Reasons to Summon a Demon
Reason #1: lonely
It was a day that started like any other.Â
Your alarm went off (like always).Â
You got ready for work (like always).Â
You commuted (like always).Â
You did your job for four hours (like always).Â
Then, it was time for lunch.Â
Normally, you opt to stay inside âthe officeâ (or wherever it is that you work) and bring something from home to save money. But looking at your lunch â the same thing you eat almost every day â makes you sigh.Â
You look out the window to the city down below. It was a gloomy morning, but now that it is midday, the sun is starting to shine through the clouds. A beam of sunlight lands on your skin and you enjoy the warmth. The ring on your finger catches the light and you look down at it.Â
How ridiculous would it be to summon a demon to have lunch with you because you donât want to eat alone? You banish the thought from your mind. You donât want to disturb the demon you were thinking of; you are certain he has a lot on his plate (like always) and he wouldnât appreciate being bothered with something so trivial (like always).Â
You sigh and look outside again. Maybe the fresh air will do you some good. You decide to spend your lunch break walking around downtown just because you can. Honestly, you donât know why you donât do this more often. You can find a lot of hidden gems this way.Â
You wander around aimlessly before you happen upon a record store. It's just a little hole-in-the-wall place, mostly unassuming. When you step in, however, you're greeted by a music-lover's paradise. Multi-colored vinyl records, signed band posters, and album covers decorate the walls. The atmosphere is groovy and retro, speaking to a bygone era of funk and flower power. Thereâs even a disco ball hanging from the ceiling! You take in the scenery for a moment as you stand in the doorway.Â
ââSup.â The guy behind the counter greets you without looking up. âIf thereâs anything you need help with or want to listen to let me know.â You nod, even though he isnât looking at you, and go to explore the stacks.Â
Your fingertips brush past rows and rows of records. You search all your favorite genres, looking out for your favorite bands, and find some gems. You donât have a lot of money right now, so you canât go crazy. You twist the ring on your finger as you contemplate what to get.
Actually, now that you think about itâŚ
Maybe you can find something to add to your âspecial collectionâ.Â
See, you were inspired by a certain demon to develop a âcursedâ record collection of your own. Since cursed magical items are hard to come by on earth, whenever you find yourself in a place that sells records, you like to check out the classical music section for albums that feature, or are inspired by the devil. It's something you like to share with him and only him. After shuffling through the stacks, you find something you think will work. You smile impishly to yourself, proud of your new purchase. Â
You make it through the rest of the workday thinking about the record. You aren't going to listen to it just yet; you like to share the experience with the devil himself. It's a good excuse to summon him from the Devildom â well, good enough for you anyway. You like to have a few more albums to listen to before you call him, so you don't feel as guilty for asking him to stay a bit longer.Â
You take a deep breath when you finally arrive in your quiet room, in your now-still apartment. You place the record on top of the others and take a look around â empty, except for your cat, sleeping peacefully on your bed. You could invite friends over to fill the silence, but your friends are notoriously terrible at last-minute plans. You absentmindedly twist the ring on your finger.Â
You need something to fill this oppressive quiet, your fingers itch and ache, you have to DO something.Â
You have to play the piano.Â
You go out to your living room, where you keep a digital piano. Itâs a little fancier than a regular old keyboard but you live in a small apartment and you're not exactly rolling in it so it's the best you can do.Â
The room is dark.Â
You hate the silence.Â
You sit at the bench and flex your fingers, hovering above the black and white keys. No sheet music, right now you just need to play your emotions. You play a low note and listen to it reverberate.Â
Then a chord.Â
Then another.Â
You close your eyes and start improvising a melancholic melody over a haunting chord progression. You are so lost in what youâre creating you don't notice the blue light flooding the dark room. Itâs gone almost as soon as it arrived and it brings with it a figure covered in shadow, a figure you also donât notice. He stands tall in the center of your room, tilting his head to the side as he listens. Once he gathers what happened intuitively, he stands over you, proudly watching you pour your potent emotions into your playing.Â
You strike a final chord and exhale loudly, ruminating on the final note. You gasp lightly when a teardrop you didn't notice falls from your face onto the keys.Â
You nearly jump out of your skin when another chord is struck up the piano. The shadow figure reveals himself to be the very demon you were thinking about while playing. Lucifer doesn't look at you as he continues to play a lighter melody. Your hands jump away from the keys and press against the rapidly beating heart in your chest.
He continues to play, not yet sitting. His sketch sounds hopeful, almost as if to say, "I'm glad to have you with me again." He sneaks a glance at you and smirks, finally taking a seat on the bench next to you. You just watch him, absolutely mesmerized, still in shock that he's really in front of you.Â
He stops playing and looks at the keys closest to you, a signal â it's your turn again. Your melody is more playful than moody this time, there's a lightness now that wasnât there before. Lucifer responds with something firm and grounded. When it's your turn, you tickle your way closer to his side. He gets lower, too. You scoot closer. From the corner of your eye, you see him smile a little bit wider. In the middle of his turn, you start playing again and together you improvise a beautiful, colorful piece of music together, full of happiness and longing, celebrating each other.Â
When you canât contain your excitement any longer, you interrupt the song and throw your arms around him. The force of you throwing your entire body weight at him only pushes him over slightly â heâs quick to catch you in his arms, twisting his torso to face you.Â
âI canât believe youâre here,â you say into his neck. It comes out as barely a whisper.Â
You feel more than hear the chuckle rumble in his chest. âYouâre the one who summoned me here.âÂ
You pull back just enough to look at him. âWould you believe me if I said I didnât do it on purpose?âÂ
He looks at the keys on the digital piano. âSomething was calling out to me.âÂ
âI guess Iâve been kinda lonely today⌠And I was thinking about you⌠A lotâŚâÂ
Lucifer hums contentedly, stern lines on his face smoothing out. Obviously, he likes it when you stroke his ego.Â
You roll your eyes playfully and bury your face in his neck again. âIâm sorry for summoning you by accident, I know you're very busy butâŚâ You play with his tie. âCan you stay here a bit, with me?âÂ
Lucifer sighs softly. You steel yourself for the words you're sure will come out of his mouth, âI canâtâ or âNot right nowâ.Â
âMC, I donât think you realize that I want to see you just as much as, if not more so than, you want to see me.â He traces his finger along your jaw and lifts your chin so that you're looking at him. âIf Iâve made you think I feel otherwise, that is my fault and I must apologize.âÂ
You feel your heart skip a beat when the Avatar of Pride apologizes to you, a lowly human. Youâre in such a state of shock, you donât know what to say so Lucifer continues to fill the silence. âIf I had the ability to summon you to my side whenever I wanted, I canât say I wouldnât abuse that power greatly.âÂ
His hand rests at the side of your face, thumb wiping another tear you didnât even know fell. You got so used to that rowdy house in the Devildom, so full of people and chaos, that coming home to your quiet, little one-bedroom apartment in the human world every day has been wearing you down. More tears start to flow as the weight of your loneliness comes crashing down on you.
You hold him tighter and press your face into his shoulder, hiding in embarrassment. âIâm sorry, Iâm such a mess,â you say, laughing. Â
He chuckles. âDonât apologize. I appreciate all aspects of you. Even when you are a mess.âÂ
You sit on the piano bench for what you wish was all eternity but is likely only about 10 minutes before you reluctantly untangle yourself from the demon you unwittingly called to this realm.Â
âWell, since you're hereâŚâ You stand, pull him from the bench, and lead him to your bedroom⌠where you keep your records! You present him with the newest addition to your collection with a wide smile.Â
He takes it from your hands and looks at the cover thoughtfully. He reads the title out loud, âThe Mephisto Waltz & Other 'Satanic' Piano Music Of Franz Liszt - John Ogdonâ.Â
He looks back at you. âInteresting,â he says in the most uninterested tone. You laugh out loud, you thought he might like that.Â
âWell, if you donât want to listen to it, I can just-â You reach for the record but he pulls it out of your reach.Â
âI never said that.âÂ
He walks over to your record player and carefully sets it up while you sit on the edge of your bed. When the music starts up, you're surprised by how fast-paced it is but you're still into it. Luci looks at your desk chair meaningfully then back at you. You scowl and shake your head slightly, tapping the edge of the bed next to you. He smiles and sits down beside you.
You lean against him, sneakily snaking your arms around his middle, and play with one of his hands.Â
You feel him relax, almost imperceptibly, leaning into your touch. He chuckles, and softly says under his breath, âThis brings back memories.âÂ
He closes his eyes and you lift your head to stare at him, left wondering whatever the hell he meant by that. You would ask, but he loves to be intentionally vague whenever you bring up his involvement in the lives of humans from the past.Â
"This isn't what I thought this song would be," you quietly admit as you play with his gloved fingers.Â
"Oh?"Â
"It's called a waltz, so I thought, you know, we would be able to dance to itâŚ"
"You wish to dance with me?" He says in a teasing tone, one that makes your face feel hot.Â
"WELL, I JUST THOUGHT-"
"That would be fairly amusingâŚ" He says, almost more to himself than to you.
He uses his free hand to lift your chin up so that you're looking at him. If your face wasn't red before, it definitely is now.Â
"It was a silly idea, we don't-"Â
"No, no. I believe I would like to dance with you as well."Â
His smile is rather wolfish as he stands from your bed and pulls you up along with him. The next song on the record starts and it isn't very apt for a dance, either.
"The music-" You begin to protest before Lucifer snaps his finger and the record begins to glow with a blue light. A record scratch abruptly interrupts the music when Chopin's Waltz in A minor, B. 150 starts to flow through the speaker.Â
He pulls your body to the proper position, one hand on your waist, the other cradling yours. Of course, he'll lead. You roll your eyes playfully.Â
"Do you remember how to do this?" He asks, amused.Â
"Pshh, of course I do," you say right before accidentally stepping on his foot. "Oop, sorry."Â
He chuckles. "Follow my lead."Â
And you do. You dance around your little room, only stepping on him a few more times before you get the hang of it again. ("It's been a long time, okay??") You twirl and pivot, avoiding tiny obstacles around your room, laughing when you attempt to take the lead by spinning him out and back into your arms.Â
He finishes the dance by lifting you by the waist and spinning around. You giggle uncontrollably, feeling lighter than you have in months. When he brings you back down, you lace your hands together behind his neck and put your head on his shoulder. The music shifts to something soft that you can slow dance to. His arms tighten around your waist, holding you close as you sway together.Â
âI really needed this,â you say. âIâve missed you guys so much.â
You feel him stiffen slightly at the remark. You smile to yourself, delighted that something so small could affect him.Â
You look up at him, âIâve missed you most, of course.â
He smiles down at you and the affection you see in his eyes is so genuine, it embarrasses you. âItâs always a pleasure to see you, MC.â
You look down to hide your quickly reddening face. âI wish I could summon you more often but I know youâre very busy. I hope I didnât interrupt anything important.â
âOh, yes,â Lucifer hums, as if he has to think hard about what he was doing before this, âI believe I was in a meeting with Lord Diavolo.â
âLord Diavolo!?â Your eyes widen with panic. You push yourself away to look him straight in his face, hoping heâs just teasing you.Â
His wolfish grin returns as he smooths down a lock of hair that is out of place on your head. âYes, but it was one of those frivolous meetings he likes to trick me into. âOh, Lucifer, you must try this bottle of Demonus I found in the depths of the labyrinthine cellar.â Nothing truly important, I promise.â
Relief quickly washes over you and you relax back into his embrace. âSo... I get to keep you a little longer?âÂ
âTonight?â His hold around you tightens. âYou may keep me as long as you wish.â

Road to countryside - about a countryside and a summer
Summer. Such a good time. Sun. Excellent weather. There are lots of green around. Grass. And trees. There are lots of beautiful flowers. It is very beautiful and super positive time of the year! Especially, if to decide to go to countryside. And, at the countryside - there are lots of countryside things to do!
There are forest and field, they are waiting for you! Waiting - and cannot wait! And, also, there are river and a lake! You can go to a swamp, it is so green and it is, also, an interesting place! It happens, that everything is grown up with grass at the countryside place. And, it happens, that there are not too much grass there. So, there are lots of things to do at the countryside place!
youtube
And, this is a game about a countryside! About a road to the countryside. About a positive mood. With a form of point and click quest. There are pictures. And, you click at the objects at the picture. You need to find a certain items. And click at them. And, this way you will go to next picture. There will be little of text with description of a picture and what you need to do!
And you are at first scene, for example. It is your room. And here before you - there is table, chair, bed. Some books are here. And, you need to take ball, bag, and keys. You need to find this items using mouse, and as you find â do a mouse click. At this moment - you see a text at the top. You take item! You take keys. For example.
Visual side of the game â it is retro style. Ms Dos. Something like, CGA graphics, 16 colors. Everything is drawn with primitives, such as circle, square, line. And painted with a certain color.
Today, all game is programmed at the level of gameplay itself. It is 19 game scenes. At them you need to find, in a middle value, three items. To move next. Sometimes, one item. And, everything is drawn. But in main idea view. So, it is still ahead to draw the details. There is no details at the pictures. So, I continue to draw. To make picture better!
There are 19 game scenes in game. About how you are going to a countryside. You take keys, all the things. Go to bus. Ride by train. In train you listen player. While train goes.
Road - it is a big thing. It is long time process. And it requires some patience. So, you are listening music in the road. With your cassette player. You have a cassettes with rock and pop music. And you can to select what you will to listen. So, you are going by train and listen player! Beautiful! You move cassette this and that!
Later, you go to a station and go by forest. There you collect beautiful little flowers, even, a bug to take with yourself. Later, you put little flowers at your countryside place. And, let bug to run at your place!
Next, you go by field. And, also, collect little flowers. Later, you go across country houses. And collect useful items. For example, gear. So, it is a quest. To click mouse you need, and to read what to do next.
It is a new theme for a game - quest. Work with mouse. It is programming with well known programming language QB64. It is everything done good there. And there are no problems. Built in functions.
So, I want to share my own countryside memories too. So, I remember, I go by train and listen player. Alice Cooper, for example. Several times I listen an album during road to the countryside, And same thing for road back â to the city.
Or you go by country place, and there - it is was a little raining, few moments ago. And now - there is no rain. But it was few seconds before. And, all grass is in water. It is also a cool thing! Everything is so refreshing!
Basic Pascal version 1.17 "BLOCK" â most newest version. In this version there are 4 new games! Platform Ball, Cabin Pilot, Free Blocker, Free Bee. And even more retro games! It is a pack of retro games with modern versions of Basic and Pascal.
It is now in development new version Basic Pascal pack games. This game will be included in a new version.
