Do people know most paper receipts are harmful to their health?
I'm going to get up on my soapbox for a minute, but do people realize how pretty much everyone is being overloaded with endocrine disruptors like BPA/BPS on a near-daily basis??
I don't think many people understand that ever since most of the world transitioned to thermal paper receipts (cheaper than ink), almost every receipt you handle from the gas station to the grocery store to the Square terminal printer at the local co-op is coated with Bisphenol-A (BPA) or its chemical cousin Bisphenol-S (BPS).
These chemicals have not only been proven to cause reproductive harm to human and animals, they've also been linked to obesity and attention disorders.
Not sure if your receipt is a thermal receipt? If you scratch it with a coin and it turns dark, it's thermal.
BPA/BPS can enter the skin to a depth such that it is no longer removable by washing hands. When taking hold of a receipt consisting of thermal printing paper for five seconds, roughly 1 μg BPA is transferred to the forefinger and the middle finger. If the skin is dry or greasy, it is about ten times more.
Think of how many receipts you handle every day. It's even worse for cashiers and tellers, who may handle hundreds in a single shift. It is also a class issue, since many people who work retail and food service are lower-income and will suffer worse health consequences over time from the near-constant exposure.
Not only that, receipts printed with thermal ink are NOT recyclable, as they pollute the rest of the paper products with the chemicals.
People don't know this and recycle them anyway, so when you buy that "green" toilet paper that says "100% recycled"? Yup, you are probably wiping your most sensitive areas with those same chemicals (for this reason, I buy bamboo or sugarcane toilet paper as a sustainable alternative to recycled paper).
This page from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has some good links if you want to learn more.
As consumers, we need to demand better from our businesses and from our governments. We need regulation of these chemicals yesterday.
If you are a buyer or decision-maker for a business, the link above also contains a shortlist of receipt paper manufacturers that are phenol-free.
If you work at a register, ask customers if they want a receipt. If they don't and you can end the transaction without printing one, don't print one!
As a consumer, fold receipts with the ink on the inside, since that's where the coating is. Some more good tips here.
And whatever you do, DO NOT RECYCLE THERMAL RECEIPTS

the extreme level of 0 fucks to give i feel about work lately is kind of problematic. but also...i give 0 fucks about it. just absolutely 0 motivation beyond the most bare minimum i can get away with doing and that's not even really motivation. that's just "i need to not be a complete bump on a log or i will get fired and we literally cannot afford to live if i do not have a job and also i would lose my admittedly very good healthcare that is covering therapy and medications and testing for my adhd, insomnia, and chronic fatigue." but like i don't care about it. i'm back in the office full time (i work remote during breaks) and i'm dreading it
#quilleth in real life#is this burnout? idk but maybe#i can barely get the energy or motivation to follow through on things i *want* to do#because i have to spend 8.5 hours a day pretending i give a rat's ass about my job#when i just. don't. i could not care less. it's boring and i often don't have enough to do#and i'm tired of getting spoken down to or having to repeat myself 8 trillion times#on the same messages i've been passing on since i started over 3.5 years ago that are coming from higher up#and i say this as someone who worked fucking retail for years#i would almost rather go back to stocking shelves than deal with this#let me loose on a store during inventory tracking and reconciliation time#at least then i can have something to do and use my mind to figure out wtf happened to shit#i feel like i'm getting stupider just from the mindlessness of my job#getting told 'oh wow you're so fast' is a good thing during peak holiday shopping and gift wrapping time#but at my job it just means i blasted through what apparently takes most people days in a few hours#and i have nothing left to do for the rest of the week but have to pretend i'm busy anyway#if my last job paid decently and had benefits i'd still be there even with the bullshit i had to deal with#because at least then i had people i could talk to and things to do#and also could wear comfortable clothes and listen to music or audiobooks or podcasts#(which i admittedly do listen to things at my current one but listening to audiobooks and doing data entry#kind of don't mesh well. like i will end up typing in things that i just heard instead of the correct data to transfer)

Unique Shop Ideas to Inspire Your Dream Business in 2024
Tumblr media
Read the full article by following this link
Finding the ideal shop ideas is crucial to setting you on the path to success, whether you are beginning an internet business or a physical store. Selling is more than just making sales; it is about giving your customers an experience that they will remember. Are you prepared to take advantage of the shop's hype? Let's begin!
Why Shop Ideas Matter
What a shop is depends on its concept. Your idea is the first step in developing your brand, identifying your target market, and pursuing success. Consider this: Your shop's concept is what determines how things are going, and this is all merely the core of your firm. It identifies your brand and highlights its unique selling points.

Private Equity Stakeholder Project
Private equity firms increasingly own more and more of the USA. These financial firms will buy out the owners and leadership of smaller companies and businesses, and run the acquired business to maximize profit above all else. Private equity firms have control over an increasingly large pool of businesses in nearly every sector you can think of: retail, energy, infrastructure, journalism, housing, manufacturing, healthcare, and security to name a handful.
The Private Equity Stakeholder Project is a "non-profit watchdog organization" which tracks the impacts and growth of private equity firms controlling vast swaths of outwardly-separate companies. They also work to provide resources to communities and workers (the stakeholders) affected by the leadership changes private equity firms cause.
Keep an eye on PESP's work, and help support their projects. I don't know a single person who hasn't been affected by "corporate landlords", "for-profit" hospitals, "privately-owned" prisons, local news owned by "a corporation out-of-state" , or "bought-out-and-shut-down" retailers. These are all the work of private equity firms.

as a small business owner heading into the holiday season, I think it's important to remind everyone to shop small where you can!
visit your local small businesses and I am sure you'll find they are worth so much more than the big box stores, both in quality of product and service.
and regardless of where you shop, do make sure to be kind to the workers who have to endure the retail holidays.

⬆ This woman actively boycotts Naughty Dragon because she refuses to allow CC to corner every market with their products.
Shop small for your dildos and vibrators, folks.
