“how to recognize AI in fanfic” — hey so this is another not-gentle reminder that AI stole from us. it’s using OUR words and OUR sentences and OUR styles.

writing “long” paragraphs is not a sign of AI — it’s a common narrative choice many writers make both in fanfiction and in traditionally published novels, and AI stole it from us.

using an em dash is not a sign of AI. it’s a stylistic sentence choice that’s been an option in place of commas and semicolons for a very long time, and AI stole it from us.

long sentence structures are not a sign of AI, but are yet another stylistic choice writers often make to create a cadence and tone that mimics the flow of poetry, and AI stole it from us.

“YA narrative breaks”? i don’t even know what the fuck this means, but i can guarantee that AI stole it from us.

italics are once again a stylistic choice that many writers love to use to create emphasis, and it’s a more stylistically acceptable and traditional form of emphasis than bold or underline text. oh, and just to be extra clear: AI STOLE IT FROM US.

stop creating fandom witch hunts over AI when you know fuck all about what it means to sit and write a story, and to spend hours fiddling with sentence structure and dialogue to get the exact right tone. writers will stop writing out of fear that their work “sounds like AI” — IT DOESNT! AI STOLE FROM US! AI SOUNDS LIKE US! — and after a while, all that will be available on AO3 is shitty AI-generated fanfiction.

because yeah, people are going to continue to use AI to write fanfiction whether you “call them out” or not. but making a laughable thread on X that uses asinine criteria is not going to fix that problem. it will just push the real writers out because people will accuse them of using AI when they haven’t, and they will (rightfully) stop writing for spaces that attack them.

Long, rambly bjd! Vanora and Faolán update below the cut, but first unboxing because my parents dropped off my package yesterday, so I finally got the head I ordered

The mailing box was a little squashed, but the inside box was perfectly fine. She came with this neat acrylic card thing. I don't think it's the COA, because there is a paper card too, but it's cool either way. I did forget to take a picture showing both sets of ears, but I'm only interested in the elf ears for her anyway xD I haven't seen a doll with interchangeable ears like this in person before, so I didn't realise the ears are basically on a peg that slots in and held in place with putty. I know Supia has interchangeable human and elf ears of their dolls too, but I'm not sure if it's a similar kind of system. Kind of neat, but I'd probably want to affix them more permanently and fill in that gap.

She's got the shallowest eyewells I've ever seen! They're nearly flat!

She's pretty, and I do like her expression. Unfortunately, there are conundrums raised by this. Typical kinds of hybriding woes, below the cut for length

Soo, she's pretty but her head is too big for the body >< I knew it was a bit of a possibility based on their suggested bodies, but the ones shown have a neck size that's pretty similar to the body i have, but it gapes. Really badly compared to the DV Vanora head, that fits nicely

Weirdly it also makes the neck seem really long..? Especially in a front view

I haven't fixed or styled the wig yet, so I can't tell if that would make it all seem worse or not, but I did try it on her anyway, and preliminary thoughts is worse >< I could potentially try kips or sueding to see if that boost to the shoulder width helped, but Vanora's clothing style being what it is, it might look weird, and that's not going to help the issues with the neck. I know i could make some kind of neck donut, but those usually also add height, which isn't an issue this head seems to have, despite being too big (unlike the Muhyul head on the Cen body, which does sit too low, so it would be helpful there).

It's definitely more cheerful looking than the Vanora head, and the face shape is a little less rounded. I know the expression I could fudge at least somewhat with the faceup, but there's not much i can do about the face shape. I do still have a lot of milliput left, so I could potentially even try modding the mouth shape of the Vanora head, since I need to airbrush color match whichever head I use to the body anyway. I suppose I could try to add some to the jawline too, but idek how to best approach that and attempting to make it symmetrical sounds like a nightmare.

The other solution is, of course, getting a different body, but no matter how pretty I think the Impldoll muscular girl body is, this one was a custom so it's not likely to sell well, and I do like it. It's light and handles well and I like the size. 4-ish centimeters might not be a lot, but it still adds up, especially since I already made her clothes. And that would also put me back in the "i don't like any of the 65cm boy bodies on the market" square for Faolán, too (and any that might work are more than I want to spend on a body). And none of the options that could potentially work for that would be the right colors, either. And with the whole tarriff/ de minimis mess....it's just not really a feasible option.

So that's all super frustrating ><

But on the bright side of things, Faolán's faceup is done and he should be on his home this week! I'll post pictures when he's home, though I do have the ones Angel Toast sent me. I'm not sure on the etiquette of sharing those myself before they do, and I do want to see him in person first anyway. Though I realised in the last few weeks, that I probably should've done the neck mod at least before I sent the head for his faceup. I'll have to figure out the best way to do that now without damaging the faceup ><

I've also started putting together a plan for his tattoo, and I got some waterslide decal paper I can print it on once it's drawn. Scaling it correctly will be hard, since my printer hates playing nicely with scale, but I think I can make it work. Of course applying it will have to wait until mods and airbrushing are done, but my husband also got a new compressor recently after trying and having troubles with mine, so hopefully the airbrushing will go smoothly.

All of this is a little moot, since my time to work on them is going to be more limited now with work than it's been :/ But i can at least stew and decide what to do about the head issue and get some opinions maybe
