The federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Tuesday issued new regulations barring medical debts from American credit reports, enacting a major new consumer protection just days before President Joe Biden is set to leave office.
The rules ban credit agencies from including medical debts on consumers' credit reports and prohibit lenders from considering medical information in assessing borrowers.
Shots - Health News
The fight against medical debt is pivoting to the states after Trump's election
These rules, which the federal watchdog agency proposed in June, could be reversed after President-elect Donald Trump takes office Jan. 20. But by finalizing the regulations now, the CFPB effectively dared the incoming Trump administration and its Republican allies in Congress to undo rules that are broadly popular and could help millions of people who are burdened by medical debt.
Medical debt will soon be wiped off credit reports for millions of Americans https://one.npr.org/i/nx-s1-5251328:nx-s1-5316379-1

Tried to call and change my name with a credit card. I couldn't do it online, so I called and I was somehow unprepared for her to ask, "What is the reason for the change?"
I stared into space and said, "Uh... gender."
There was a very long pause before she went, "Alrighty."
#ramblies#They make me send in documents and I'm legit like#maybe I should just close this account rather than deal with that#I use the card so rarely and I only got it to help bump up my credit score#cause cards through stores report positively all year long even if you only used it once#but my credit is nice now and the hassle of mailing stuff is just not worth it#like I'd have to photocopy my license and then mail it in and they have no alternative

ive been getting more sugar daddy scammers lately trying to court me which i THINK is a good sign because that means i might be getting closer to getting an offer from a LEGIT sugar daddy, who i would use to purchase more pre-9/11 technology.
#text#occurrence#any and all LEGITIMATE sugar daddies can and should send me money directly FIRST and allow it to sit for a full business month#thus making it much more difficult to refund thus creating trust#in addition#this would likely disqualify fraudulent daddies with stolen credit cards#since it'd probably be reported and refunded within the 30 day period#what im saying is give me $2000 and dont talk to me for a month and then i'll come to YOU#cashapp is $clowndepot#paypal is papermariowiki

Hello! I hope you're doing well and I'd like to thank you for being the rad trans uncle of Tumblr. I'm in a fuckin' crimson state that's quite unfriendly to trans people and I'm afraid I won't be able to leave until 2028 at the earliest. Might I ask if there's anything you'd recommend doing? Anywho, I hope the leaves were great where you are! Peace!
It's been weird, but I'm glad to be here. :) As for recommendations, well, while you are not in a great place for trans rights, thinking ahead towards a move a few years down the road *is* good. Stuff you should be considering:
Get your finances in order.
Start with making a budget (I like the tool YNAB), tracking your habits, and looking for places to reduce spending. I know that can mean squeezing blood from a stone, but even saving up gas money for a cross-country trip can move up your moving timeline.
You also want to start planning your moving expenses. For example, buying boxes, using a moving service, cost to service your car, calming meds for your pets, etc. Just make a spreadsheet and keep adding as you think of things. Have a rolling total and track against your savings.
Lastly, get your credit score in order. A free service like Credit Karma is fine, but as you get closer to having to apply for rent or a mortgage, sign up with each credit agency and pull your report. Get caught up on any delinquencies asap and do not miss any payments from now until you are moved - missed payments take the longest of ANYTHING to fall off your score.
If you've changed your legal name, make sure it matches with all the credit bureaus. If you feel responsible with credit, ask for a credit line increase every 6 months - that will help with your debt ratio if you are currently trying to pay down a balance. Plan a credit score timeline with a hard stop at least 2 months before you apply for a loan/rent -- after that, no more making any big purchases or applying for new cards. Try to have no more of 10% of your total credit line actually on your cards by the end of your timeline. Aka, if your line of credit is $1,000, you only want $100 on the cards.
2. Start paring down your stuff
Gt crafty hobbies? Stop adding to your stash. Stop it. Start getting rid of broken things, clothes that don't fit, stuff you don't see yourself using, or stuff that is cheaper to sell & buy at your new place, rather than pay to move. If this all feels hard, put the items you're questioning in a box now, and then open it next year and see how you feel. Don't buy anything you wouldn't want to move.
3. Start your research
Make lists of towns that look promising. See how their local government works. Check the local reddits and facebook groups to get the vibes. Make lists of "must haves" and "nice to haves" at the state, city, neighborhood, and even house level. Get an idea for what the cost of living will be in your new place. Decide what your deal-breakers will be.
4. Work on your job skills
Four years is a lot of time to improve yourself for a good salary hike. It's a lot of time to get marketable for remote jobs, which will broaden your opportunities to live where you want. If remote work interests you, start looking at job listings and note the requirements. Make a plan to be qualified within 3 years.
5. Make a bucket list of things to do in your current state
There must be some good things about your state. There were in mine. Afford yourself grace and do some fun things that you might not have the chance to do again when you move. Hang out especially with local friends and family you care about.
6. Keep an eye on what's happening wrt trans rights.
Follow trans pundits and your local trans rights orgs. Get in the habit of learning what's going down in your municipality, down to the school board level. Be prepared to have to adjust your moving timeline if shit hits the fan.
7. Stay on top of your healthcare and legal stuff
No passport yet? Apply now. Forgetful about getting your HRT renewed? Set reminders and work hard to stay on top of everything. As you get closer to moving, research healthcare options in your new home and get appointments lined up asap.
8. If you're selling & buying a house, be prepared for it to take nearly a year
Seriously, it can take forever for everything to work out. Work with realtors in your new state who specialize in remote sales & relocations. Start repairing your current place by year 3 and start packing months in advance of the final move.
tldr; Treat the next 4 years like you're at college and your degree is Getting the Hell Outta Dodge. Plan as much as you can with to-do lists and spreadsheets, with some kind of monthly goal at first, then weekly and daily goals as your move approaches. It can feel overwhelming, but knowing *now* that you are going to move means you can plan as much as possible and reduce the amount of panic-decisions.
Good luck!
#trans stuff#fwiw I knew in 2016 I wanted to move and I knew I had a ton of financial obstacles to overcome#it took me 8 years but also keep in mind I was dealing with the huge financial burden of escaping poverty#once shitty old delinquencies fell off my credit report I hit the ground running#in those 8 years I tripled my salary and became a remote worker#that gave me a lot of freedom for picking where to live#if you are moving with a partner delegate some things to them and then have regular check-ins#for example I handled getting out of FL and my partner handled finding a place to move *to*

Me, casually browsing Pinterest: oh cute dog, seems familiar *continues browsing before coming to an absolute halt* WAIT FUCKIN MACHETE-??
(I see the beloved gay Catholic hounds everywhere (/pos), though I’m not sure if you’re like,, cool with those folks reuploading your art ^^; )
As a side note, I needed a topic for a research project and your art has sent me on the wild trail of the historical prevalence and spread of different hound species in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. Your lads are officially peer reviewed XD
.
#jumpscared by misplaced Machete#hah#no I can't say I love it when my art is reposted on pinterest especially without sources or credit#but there isn't a lot I can do to stop that from happening and trying to get them reported and removed would take all of my time#so it isn't worth it#choose your fights wisely and so on#also that's really cool I'm really flattered my art inspired you to pick that topic! hounds and history and the Mediterranean#I hope you have/had good time!#answered#hircine-scholar

Boost Credit Score to Buy a House
A credit score plays a pivotal role in the process of buying a house. It reflects your financial responsibility and history of managing credit. Lenders use your credit score to assess your eligibility for a mortgage loan and determine the interest rate you qualify for. A higher credit score indicates lower risk to lenders, making you more likely to secure a favorable loan with better terms. It's essential to maintain a healthy credit score by paying bills on time, reducing outstanding debts, and managing credit utilization responsibly. Before buying a house, check your fast credit report for inaccuracies and take steps to improve your score if needed. A strong credit score not only enhances your chances of homeownership but also potentially saves you money over the life of your mortgage.

At long last, a meaningful step to protect Americans' privacy

This Saturday (19 Aug), I'm appearing at the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books. I'm on a 2:30PM panel called "Return From Retirement," followed by a signing:
https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/festivalofbooks
Privacy raises some thorny, subtle and complex issues. It also raises some stupid-simple ones. The American surveillance industry's shell-game is founded on the deliberate confusion of the two, so that the most modest and sensible actions are posed as reductive, simplistic and unworkable.
Two pillars of the American surveillance industry are credit reporting bureaux and data brokers. Both are unbelievably sleazy, reckless and dangerous, and neither faces any real accountability, let alone regulation.
Remember Equifax, the company that doxed every adult in America and was given a mere wrist-slap, and now continues to assemble nonconsensual dossiers on every one of us, without any material oversight improvements?
https://memex.craphound.com/2019/07/20/equifax-settles-with-ftc-cfpb-states-and-consumer-class-actions-for-700m/
Equifax's competitors are no better. Experian doxed the nation again, in 2021:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/30/dox-the-world/#experian
It's hard to overstate how fucking scummy the credit reporting world is. Equifax invented the business in 1899, when, as the Retail Credit Company, it used private spies to track queers, political dissidents and "race mixers" so that banks and merchants could discriminate against them:
https://jacobin.com/2017/09/equifax-retail-credit-company-discrimination-loans
As awful as credit reporting is, the data broker industry makes it look like a paragon of virtue. If you want to target an ad to "Rural and Barely Making It" consumers, the brokers have you covered:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/13/public-interest-pharma/#axciom
More than 650,000 of these categories exist, allowing advertisers to target substance abusers, depressed teens, and people on the brink of bankruptcy:
https://themarkup.org/privacy/2023/06/08/from-heavy-purchasers-of-pregnancy-tests-to-the-depression-prone-we-found-650000-ways-advertisers-label-you
These companies follow you everywhere, including to abortion clinics, and sell the data to just about anyone:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/07/safegraph-spies-and-lies/#theres-no-i-in-uterus
There are zillions of these data brokers, operating in an unregulated wild west industry. Many of them have been rolled up into tech giants (Oracle owns more than 80 brokers), while others merely do business with ad-tech giants like Google and Meta, who are some of their best customers.
As bad as these two sectors are, they're even worse in combination – the harms data brokers (sloppy, invasive) inflict on us when they supply credit bureaux (consequential, secretive, intransigent) are far worse than the sum of the harms of each.
And now for some good news. The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, under the leadership of Rohit Chopra, has declared war on this alliance:
https://www.techdirt.com/2023/08/16/cfpb-looks-to-restrict-the-sleazy-link-between-credit-reporting-agencies-and-data-brokers/
They've proposed new rules limiting the trade between brokers and bureaux, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, putting strict restrictions on the transfer of information between the two:
https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/15/tech/privacy-rules-data-brokers/index.html
As Karl Bode writes for Techdirt, this is long overdue and meaningful. Remember all the handwringing and chest-thumping about Tiktok stealing Americans' data to the Chinese military? China doesn't need Tiktok to get that data – it can buy it from data-brokers. For peanuts.
The CFPB action is part of a muscular style of governance that is characteristic of the best Biden appointees, who are some of the most principled and competent in living memory. These regulators have scoured the legislation that gives them the power to act on behalf of the American people and discovered an arsenal of action they can take:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/18/administrative-competence/#i-know-stuff
Alas, not all the Biden appointees have the will or the skill to pull this trick off. The corporate Dems' darlings are mired in #LearnedHelplessness, convinced that they can't – or shouldn't – use their prodigious powers to step in to curb corporate power:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/10/the-courage-to-govern/#whos-in-charge
And it's true that privacy regulation faces stiff headwinds. Surveillance is a public-private partnership from hell. Cops and spies love to raid the surveillance industries' dossiers, treating them as an off-the-books, warrantless source of unconstitutional personal data on their targets:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/16/ring-ring-lapd-calling/#ring
These powerful state actors reliably intervene to hamstring attempts at privacy law, defending the massive profits raked in by data brokers and credit bureaux. These profits, meanwhile, can be mobilized as lobbying dollars that work lawmakers and regulators from the private sector side. Caught in the squeeze between powerful government actors (the true "Deep State") and a cartel of filthy rich private spies, lawmakers and regulators are frozen in place.
Or, at least, they were. The CFPB's discovery that it had the power all along to curb commercial surveillance follows on from the FTC's similar realization last summer:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/12/regulatory-uncapture/#conscious-uncoupling
I don't want to pretend that all privacy questions can be resolved with simple, bright-line rules. It's not clear who "owns" many classes of private data – does your mother own the fact that she gave birth to you, or do you? What if you disagree about such a disclosure – say, if you want to identify your mother as an abusive parent and she objects?
But there are so many stupid-simple privacy questions. Credit bureaux and data-brokers don't inhabit any kind of grey area. They simply should not exist. Getting rid of them is a project of years, but it starts with hacking away at their sources of profits, stripping them of defenses so we can finally annihilate them.
I'm kickstarting the audiobook for "The Internet Con: How To Seize the Means of Computation," a Big Tech disassembly manual to disenshittify the web and make a new, good internet to succeed the old, good internet. It's a DRM-free book, which means Audible won't carry it, so this crowdfunder is essential. Back now to get the audio, Verso hardcover and ebook:

Like any new gig, this one comes with essential costume choices, as in as little as possible. The Red, White and Royal Blue star strips down to some black and white pairs of underwear for a new campaign, which was shot in Paris by photographer Quentin de Briey. Lacoste also recruited A-list stylist Jason Bolden, who has worked closely with Zakhar Perez and been the mastermind of his rise to become a fashionable one-to-watch in the industry.
Yes, we love Jason Bolden too, thank you, THR.

idk how much engagement you get but if you're interested in an extra income, I have a free credit repair software and I can make you a referral link so you get a referral fee for everyone that signs up with your link.
Attention, baby bitchlings! This is clearly spam, but we're using it as a teaching moment.
I would never say yes to something like this for 2 reasons:
Part of our revenue model is endorsing companies for a cut of referrals (the other part being our Patreon, which you should absolutely join). Companies reach out to partner with us BECAUSE we have a big audience and BECAUSE we've built up a significant amount of trust with our audience. Y'all know we don't endorse stuff we haven't personally tested and researched. There's no way in HELL your humble Bitches would signal boost a completely random, unnamed "free credit repair software."
Most credit repair services are a scam or a waste of money. They recommend tactics you can do on your own for free (I'll link our guides for this below) without sharing your sensitive personal data with an outside company. The fact that anon is recommending a "free" credit repair software tells me that once you're in the software, their business model is to upsell you on other shit you don't need. Along with life insurance, credit repair services are one business model we'll never partner with for endorsements.
Now, if someone asks YOU to signal boost a referral link, think long and hard about it. Is it legit? Is it a scam? Is it something you're ok putting your name on if it means other people could be taken advantage of?
Now, if your credit needs repairing, here's what we recommend:
How to Build Good Credit Without Going Into Debt
Credit Scoring Is a Racist, Classist System that Has Us All Trapped
How To Fix an Error on Your Credit Report Without Losing Your Damn Mind
How to Instantly Increase Your Credit Score… for FREE

Did we just help you out? Say thanks on Patreon!
