They weren't lying, those Re: Dracula wedding vows can Make Me Cry Until I Feel Sick
It's just. Mina's love for Jonathan, the way he pledges his life to her and she thinks he's still delirious when he is in fact saying he's gone through hell and he'd do it again, all for Mina. The way that when he flung himself from Castle Dracula, he wanted to think only of Mina, and said his goodbyes to her more than he did anybody else in his life, more than even his father figure.
And she doesn't yet know the extent of it, but she feels the very same way for him, and the fact that later in the story she goes through the same hell Jonathan went through to protect him, and for what Dracula does to Mina, Jonathan intends to kill the thing he was previously unable to kill for his own sake, and pledges to follow Mina into hell because he loves her. She's finally his wife, and he's her husband, and they want so badly to move forwards. Imagine how they must feel. Mina thought Jonathan had died and that she'd lost him forever, and Jonathan thought he would die in Castle Dracula and never see Mina again. But Jonathan survived, and now their fears are all swept away because the thing they most want in life is eachother, and now they have it.
Love is real in this Chili's tonight. Pure, flawless love, and I am shaking and crying. I wish that Lucy, who is so unbelievably sweet and kind-hearted, could have the same luck that Jonathan and Mina had, and that her life with Arthur would be filled with the kind of love, joy, peace and devotion the Harkers find in each other, and I am devastated to know that the rest of Lucy's life is going to be torturous at best.

Van Helsing is described at length in the novel. He is Dr. Seward's old mentor, possessing "an iron nerve, a temper of the ice-brook, an indomitable resolution, self-command, [....] and the kindliest and truest heart that beats." According to Mina, he is "a man of medium height, strongly built, with his shoulders set back over a broad, deep chest and a neck well balanced on the trunk as the head is on the neck. The poise of the head strikes me at once as indicative of thought and power. The head is noble, well-sized, broad, and large behind the ears. The face, clean-shaven, shows a hard, square chin, a large resolute, mobile mouth, a good-sized nose, rather straight, but with quick, sensitive nostrils, that seem to broaden as the big bushy brows come down and the mouth tightens. The forehead is broad and fine, rising at first almost straight and then sloping back above two bumps or ridges wide apart, such a forehead that the reddish hair cannot possibly tumble over it, but falls naturally back and to the sides. Big, dark blue eyes are set widely apart and are quick and tender or stern with the man's moods." Van Helsing tends to talk through funny stories and bizarre metaphors, is one of the first to consider the supernatural in Lucy's illness, and comes from Amsterdam.

3x06 The Bounty Hunter | Obvious
Because I think the "obvious reasons" might not be quite so obvious to children and/or non-Canadians, I would like to Explain! The! Joke!
Bobby Orr: One of the greatest hockey players of all time
k.d. lang: Canada's Most Famous Lesbian
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's a musician and her story is pretty fascinating; she was famously profiled in Vanity Fair after being shut out of the country music scene in America for being gay. (You should read the piece! It's good!).
AND ALSO DID I MENTION SHE WAS ON THE COVER OF THAT MAGAZINE GETTING A CLOSE SHAVE FROM CINDY FUCKING CRAWFORD IN 1993
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hard to explain the impact on a baby butch lesbian. Much to consider.
And k.d. was hot shit—even Madonna said of her "Elvis is alive—and she's beautiful!" She was from the real middle-of-nowhere in Alberta (village population 600) and managed to make it big. You probably recognize at least this classic banger:
youtube
So of course Renfield Turnbull, confirmed homosexual (to me), would be crackin' wise about k.d. lang.
Also of no relevance to anything, Bobby Orr is from Parry Sound, which is also the closest town to my cottage, and you can still hit up fine family establishment Orr's Fine Meats and Deli or play hockey at the Bobby Orr Community Centre any time lol

I am truly thankful that she is to be left out of our future work, and even of our deliberations. It is too great a strain for a woman to bear. I did not think so at first, but I know better now. [...] I daresay it will be difficult to begin to keep silence after such confidence as ours; but I must be resolute, and to-morrow I shall keep dark over to-night's doings, and shall refuse to speak of anything that has happened.
Jonathan, no, don't give into the guys' peer pressure noooo
It is strange to me to be kept in the dark as I am to-day; after Jonathan's full confidence for so many years, to see him manifestly avoid certain matters, and those the most vital of all. This morning I slept late after the fatigues of yesterday, and though Jonathan was late too, he was the earlier. He spoke to me before he went out, never more sweetly or tenderly, but he never mentioned a word of what had happened in the visit to the Count's house. And yet he must have known how terribly anxious I was. Poor dear fellow! I suppose it must have distressed him even more than it did me. They all agreed that it was best that I should not be drawn further into this awful work, and I acquiesced. But to think that he keeps anything from me! And now I am crying like a silly fool, when I know it comes from my husband's great love and from the good, good wishes of those other strong men.
[...] Well, some day Jonathan will tell me all; and lest it should ever be that he should think for a moment that I kept anything from him, I still keep my journal as usual. Then if he has feared of my trust I shall show it to him, with every thought of my heart put down for his dear eyes to read.
Mina, no, you have to communicate now, in the present, you're you, you can un-acquiesce, you can break the curse, just talk to Jonathan now, noooooo
GOD this is masterfully infuriating work, Bramward Stokerbroker. Here we have on paper just how much this new status quo--the 'proper' status quo--grates against both of them. You can almost hear them grinding their teeth with the effort to keep smiling and nodding through this unanimous* decision. They know it is For Mina's Sake that they are doing this. Sure, they both hate every second of it and it breaks a loving rhythm they've shared for years together, BUT THEY KNOW BETTER NOW :)))
(Lucy is screaming in the afterlife. Renfield has his head in his hands.)
But all that aside, a thing I'm hooked on this read-around is the fact that, hey. We are reading this. Spoiler, but the entirety of Dracula is actually compiled together by Mina after the story closes. These are all written documents we're reading that the entire group has laid eyes on already. With everyone (bar Art and Quincey for some reason, thanks Mr. 3 Lines Allowed and Mr. Laconic :/, Jack is just talking and waiting for Mina to transcribe now, augh) on duty in some way to record the progress of things so that they can be read later as reference...I have to wonder now.
How honest are these pages the Harkers are putting down now versus what they wrote before joining Van Helsing's Scooby gang? Neither one is writing in shorthand. It's all plain English.
I had a class once where one of the assignments was to keep a daily journal. One page filled out every single day, about anything. Anyone want to guess how many personal secrets or honest feelings I put in those pages for the guy grading my class to read? If you said anything higher than 0 you're wrong.
The Harkers have an audience to worry about right now. An audience of Prof. Et Cetera, Dr. Asylum Director (whose asylum they're currently living in! the kind of place where Jonathan could've ended up and innumerable women have been imprisoned for being women the Wrong Way! whee!), Incredibly Wealthy and Empowered Lord, and Mr. Likewise Rich 'We Should Do Guns About It' American. Who all seem to like them, fresh-from-the-lower class, industrious and Dracula-confronting sorts that they are. Fast friends, all of them.
(Jonathan is still only Harker to them. Simultaneously the Man Who Survived Castle Dracula and the gofer guy doing the footwork and the paperwork/property hunt while Van Helsing hits the library and the others...well, I'm sure they're doing something. Other than re-reading the first half of Dracula.)
(...Which was compiled and transcribed by Mina. Who faced down Dracula in her jammies. Unarmed. At night. For Lucy. But she can't handle your scary stories about the houses full of dirt boxes, let alone join you on the hunt she was explicitly prepared and eager to help with. Can't risk it, little lady, off to bed now.)
This is where they are now that they've ~joined forces~ with Van Helsing and the Suitor Squad. After all they've done, all they're still relied on to do, the Harkers are with allies who have had their acquaintance for less than three days. And now, to appease those allies and their opinions and to keep everything placid with these nice, outnumbering, socially and monetarily endowed parties, they do what they've always done when faced with the fact of their being perpetually on the low rung of the ladder.
The Harkers accommodate. Including in their own diaries, as these too are now deemed forfeit important to the Cause, should the gang need to comb back through it all for clues.
That's why the Harkers are the only ones writing it down--because they already were. They're the kids in the group project who can be trusted to do the work. So just let them keep doing it. Keep an accurate record now, kids! You do such a good job of it, we'd only be getting in the way, ha ha. Remember that we can and will read everything you put down in the future.
Hence: All of what we read today. And will read in the dates to come.
The Harkers are writing under a (friendly) gun right now. They can purge some feelings, but not all of them. And not completely. And not in any way that certain doctors and upper class people of power they barely know might misconstrue as ungrateful or mad in any sense. The Harkers are good people. The Harkers are helpful. The Harkers are team players even if that means no longer being a team themselves. They chafe a little at this, but it's all so new to them! It's alright. God's will and Van Helsing's be done. They know better now.
With all this in mind, it makes much more sense why Jonathan chooses to use shorthand for a Very Particular Entry we see coming up. An entry that Mina alone could read and decide to enter in the distant future, after the storm had passed.
And why, in light of all that happens, he cannot trust himself to put more than a vignette's worth of lines down as time goes on. Not if he wants to keep himself from laying out some actual honesty for everyone to read. Mina's entries will be weightier things, while she still has the capacity to write--carefully. Always carefully.

Do you have any recommendations for vampire movies. I need to check off a list
YES okay here's a bunch I've watched and liked in the last few months:
nosferatu 1922; german, silent, black and white. every time I go to watch a silent movie I think "ugghhh this is gonna be boring" and then it rules. if you are a dracula enjoyer, this is actually a fairly faithful adaptation up until It's Not, and there are some interesting visuals and story choices to ponder.
let the right one in 2008; swedish. surprisingly tender romance between two lonely tweens intercut with lots and lots of violent murders in austere snowy winter settings.
a girl walks home alone at night 2014; iranian, black and white. less driven by plot, more by visuals and style. very slow, thoughtful, and emotionally evocative film occasionally broken up with scenes like "guy takes ecstasy at a costume party while dressed as dracula and can't get himself home so a vampire takes him back to her place by pushing him on her skateboard that she recently stole from a child." also there's a cat.
bit 2019; american. kind of falls apart in the third act but it's fun enough that I'd say it's worth a watch anyway. trans girl graduates high school, moves to LA, and falls in with a lesbian vampire girl gang, ft. an extremely good sequence set to "rasputin."
thirst 2009; korean. haven't actually finished watching this one, but it is absolutely balls to the walls. so much sex and blood and bloody sex and sexy blood and catholicism. catholic priest volunteers to participate in medical trials and gets infected with a rare blood disease, and, whoops, now he's a really horny but tortured vampire. tense as all hell, based on the french novel therese raquin.
renfield 2023; american. is this a good movie? no. is it extremely fun? yes. very much a popcorn movie with gore so excessive that it crosses beyond the pale and becomes slapstick. this renfield is a bit of a renfield / jonathan harker hybrid character, suffering under the same old vampiric abusive boss over 100 years, and he's starting to want to try and break free of dracula's thrall.
byzantium 2012; british. gorgeous visuals, lovely performances, imo the script could have used another draft but it's very watchable. two vampire women bounce around england trying to avoid capture by the vampire authorities, but the younger of the two is getting fed up with having to lie about herself to everyone and move constantly. interesting one to compare to bit, they're doing a lot of similar thing wrt gender dynamics and vampirism as power.
broad content warning, there's a lot of sex, violence, and sexual violence across this selection, if anything of that sort tends to upset you then I'd recommend checking the doesthedogdie page for any film in which you're interested.

Dracula from TAZ vs Dracula might just be my favourite version of the character solely because I LOVE the way he's portrayed as an antagonist (and also Griffin's voice)
*TAZ Dracula Spoilers Below*
Like, of course he's a bad guy, he kills people and terrorizes the populace of Angrave. Heck, look at what he did to Renfield! His evilness has always been immediately apparent just from the fact alone that its Dracula. Dracula as a character usually has, historically speaking, been an evil dude!
But this Dracula is also a bad guy. He's honestly kind of a dick, and that makes him worse than if he was just some inhuman blood-sucking monster. We get to know him as a person through the diary entries and his relationships with other people, we get to learn about the normal people things he does, and you can so clearly see just how kind of terrible he is as a person.
He doesn't care about other people and constantly regards himself as a victim (I can practically hear the :( in his opening monologues). He treats the people around him as disposable; Frankenstein meant so little to him that he just dropped him the moment his plans required it, leaving a subpar replacement to placate him, and Renfield was his number one guy until the moment came when he needed a test subject. Not to mention the letter to Sweater Drac/Vlad where Dracula tells him he'll probably be killed but should put up a good fight anyways just to keep up his own reputation. And then he just sits down with a pen at his little table and goes "Dear Diary, why am I so unhappy and alone :("
And that's just the half of it.
But the thing that gets me the most is the bones in his car. THOSE ARE LADY GODWIN'S BONES. He's never cared about the fact that he killed Godwin, it's just a funny story to him, but the sheer fact that he just casually tossed what was left of her body in the trunk of his car and forgot about it had me fuming. It's insult to injury to Godwin at that point. That body meant as much to him as the old gym clothes that were in there with it. Is that a monstrous and evil thing to do? Not really. Is it a dick move? Absolutely.
And we see more of him being a selfish prick than we do of him killing people and doing evil things. Sure still does those things, but at his core he's a selfish dick who also just happens to be an evil vampire/monster. And I LOVE that. I hate him as a person, not as an inhuman big bad evil guy, the same way I wouldn't be able to stand it if I had to deal with a jerk like that in real life. I hate him in a very specific and real way, like a coworker who's always talking about themselves and gives waaaaaaay too much detail as you just kinda sit there as they talk at you and wonder how on earth they don't realize that they sound like a dick
I just think this version of Dracula is such a good concept for an antagonist and it's done so well

may we hear about the stage play?
Ok so disclaimer before I start whining, I recognise that adaptations cannot be perfect 1:1 representations of books because that just won't work.
Also local theatre are doing the best they can, they looked like they had fun, genuinely good for them for putting on a whole play. Dracula, Van Helsing and Renfield were particularly good, and the crew of the Demeter gradually being taken was cool.
But having read Dracula a few times now (and caring about it more than I would have expected, in large part thanks to the Dracula Daily community), here are the changes I wasn't on board with.
Most of Jonathan's time in the castle was cut. He arrived, had one scene about solicitor business when Dracula said to write that he was staying another month, and then that was it until Mina got a letter that he was in a convent hospital. There was a flashback scene in the second act with the three creepy ladies eating the baby and him realising he was about to be eaten himself so he needed to escape. I guess it was for time but we just didn't get any of the build-up of dread.
Arthur's father, Lucy's mother and Mr Hawkins were all cut. Again, I can kind of see why as it streamlines some plotlines etc but it reduces the amount of stress and loss the gang are dealing with on top of Dracula.
Jack and Quincy were individually friends with Arthur but only met each other at the start of the play? And neither of them proposed to Lucy - it was mentioned later that Jack was in love with her but Quincy barely even interacted with her.
None of the modern technology that helps the heroes get the edge over Dracula - shorthand, telegrams, phonographs, trains - were mentioned, so the whole theme of Old vs New was lost. (also so many of the lovely quirks of the characters! no Mina being a massive nerd about railway timetables!)
It was a bit... confusing? Like who was in Whitby and who was in London at which points, what was going in the big final showdown... I could follow but the people I was with who hadn't read it were a bit baffled at times.
Last point going under a readmore, spoiler warning for the epilogue
They changed the epilogue to be a real downer! The frame of the play was Van Helsing telling us the story three years later, at which point: no mention of little Quincy, Mina still wakes screaming and won't tell Jonathan what she dreams about, Jack has buried himself in work, and Arthur has withdrawn from society. Uhhh cool. ok.

You have done cheeses. How about dessert.
Ooh, good idea.
See, the thing about Victorian food is that a lot of it sounds pretty unappealing from the vantage point of the 21st century. There were a lot of overboiled vegetables and stodgy meals designed to get you through winters with no central heating.
But Victorian desserts? Much more reliably delicious. So I can restrict myself to the desserts that these characters might actually have eaten. No tiramisu (1960s) or banoffee pie (1971).
Starting off with an easy one, RM Renfield is the traditional Scottish fruit slice (which I already highlighted in my food guide to Dracula) known as flies graveyard. I'm going to trust that one doesn't need any additional exploration.
Lucy Westenra is light (literally: "Lucy" means light), pretty, and appealing to small children. OK, admittedly the eater-eaten relationship goes the other way around with the small children vs Lucy-as-dessert, but I think it still works. She's a bombe glacée, a spherical ice-cream dessert that first appeared on restaurant menus in the 1880s.
I had a fun browse through Dutch desserts before I found the perfect one for Abraham van Helsing. He's the old man of the story, but he's still a little bit spicy and a little bit divisive - much like anise, which flavours Dutch oudewijvenkoek, or old wives' cake.
For Quincey Morris, there could only be one option. He's from Texas, y'all, he is obviously peach cobbler.
Continuing with the suitors, the obvious answer for Arthur Holmwood would be a dessert associated with wealth and privilege - perhaps Eton Mess, traditionally served at the annual cricket match between Eton and Harrow Schools, and first mentioned in print in 1893. But Eton Mess is a light, sweet, inconsequential sort of dessert and that just doesn't seem right for Arthur. Instead, I'd associate him with a rich, indulgent, traditional, solid plum pudding.
Jack Seward is in some ways the most modern of the suitors. Also the most highly strung. He's cherries jubilee, a brand-new dessert in 1897 as it was (probably) created that year for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. It's full of liqueur (suitably for Jack, who's full of chloral) and it gets flambéed at the table.
I have to admit that I struggled with Jonathan Harker. Maybe I just love him too much to caricature him, you know? But what I came down is that he needed to be a beloved treat, available on menus across the UK, not wildly expensive, not wildly luxurious. And also, Jonathan goes through a lot of trials and drinks a lot of tea in this novel. Jonathan is a toasted teacake.
As for Mina Harker née Murray, it seemed appropriate that she should be a similar sort of dessert to her husband. So he's a bun with dried fruit and she's a bread with dried fruit. Specifically, she's an Irish soda bread (since Murray is an Irish surname) that is known either as Spotted Dog or - more suitably for Mina - railway cake.

PROPAGANDA
R. M. Renfield
Mentally ill queer man writes mentally ill queer character. 200 years later, Dracula Daily happens and everyone in their mother immediately starts poking fun at him, demonizing him, or treating him like a naive child when none of these things are true. I could write a darn essay about Renfield and his role in the story. His status as a servant of Dracula is kept hidden from our heroes despite how obvious it is to the modern reader, and it turns into a striking example of dramatic irony. But at the same time, he's not a simpering servant; he's psychotic and Dracula feeds his delusion for his own gain. His death isn't a sacrifice, it's a tragic end to a story about the effects of isolation on the mind and the suffering that can come about from people refusing to listen to those who aren't like them. Pretty damned amusing, then, that absolutely no one seems to listen to the words that come out of his mouth.
Izzy Hands
people hate this guy. people HATE this guy. and for what? "hes abusive" you are out of your MIND if you actually think that. let middle aged men be messy jilted lovers, goddamn!!!!
Oh my gods, fandom has lost their minds with this one. People act like Izzy is the devil himself and actually it's his fault that the main love interest of the show has ever done anything wrong ever. Every bad thing in the show? Actually Izzy's fault. I've seen people literally, actually say he deserved his abuse and that it's his fault his abuser hurt him and that he liked it. I have seen people unironically say that his abuser should have killed him. I've seen people say that Edward Teach (y'know, literal Blackbeard who explicitly says in canon, with his mouth, "I love a good maim" would never have done anything violent ever if it wasn't for Izzy's manipulation. This is, of course, ignoring that Ed's first acts if violence were before he ever even met Izzy
So Ed and Izzy have a toxic relationship and do bad stuff to each other. And Izzy fans will minimize the shit Izzy did while bringing up what he suffered. And Ed fans will maximize the shit Izzy did and forgot the rest. Honestly I'm might be bringing a lot of anger on the blog for this, sorry.

While listening to the beginning of Oct 3rd now, it occurs to me as Renfield explains what happened when he met Dracula and Dracula bribed him, is that 1. I didn’t really pay as much attention as I am now over Renfield’s story last year, I think because a few of the entries leading up to this I didn’t pay too close attention to
This time round I feel the horror and sympathy one should for Renfield. He was… a good man… he tried to warn them.
The 2nd thing is that, like I said I didn’t pay as much attention to a few of the entries leading up to this last year, so I heard Mina’s nightmare sequence but I didn’t pay too close attention to it. This, paired with missing Renfield’s warnings, I didn’t quite realise that… Dracula had already assaulted Mina. On Oct 2nd.
It’s veiled. It’s just a nightmare, but I realised when I heard it last week.
And it occurs to me now… no one pays enough attention to that. That he was already feeding on her, he began when they attacked the house next to Seward’s, but most importantly, he relished and planned waking her and feeding on her on Oct 3rd
He didn’t need to, he had already done it once without her knowing. But he wanted her terrified. He wanted to… force her to bite him too. And even that, he forces her to be fully conscious for, again even if she didn’t stay asleep he could have put her into a trance for it, just like the nightmare, just like with Lucy.
But he wanted her to know what he was doing to her.
She suffers both the horror of not having the full memory of the first assault, the first feeding, of being deprived of all control and even the… the privilege of some recollection of it, as well as… the petrifying experience of him threatening Jonathan to get her to comply. Of being awake and seeing him drain her life and force her into biting him

I was complaining about bad Dracula adaptations making liars out of the cast (especially Mina and Lucy) and now I have a possibly fun idea.
Adaptation where vampires are not real, everyone lives, and the whole book is a collaborative horror novel by the main cast, who based it all on their own diaries and letters from that year. The real Dracula is in on it, too, having genuinely befriended Jonathan before moving to Whitby. He contributed a lot of the vampire lore.
Jonathan Harker was stuck in Dracula's castle for longer than expected due to bad weather and roads, but then he got sick and had to be sent to the nun's hospital.
Quincey Morris is one of those friends who has a ton of good ideas but hardly contributes his own writings.
Lucy still gets sick, and Dr. Seward still calls in Van Helsing, but she eventually gets better. She's too sick to contribute and she agrees to have her character killed off, but they still hang around and tell her what they've written.
The Demeter really did arrive as a mysterious abandoned ship, but nobody knows what happened. They made up the whole diary bit.
Publishing Renfield feels a bit like a patient-doctor confidentiality violation, so maybe Dr. Seward cobbled together some weird stories from the asylum, or he got bored with the same stuff and made up his ideal interesting test subject?
The part where Mrs. Westenra removes the garlic flowers from Lucy's bedroom is based on a part where she removed flowers from her room without permission.
Mina is the one who cobbles together everyone's disparate writings and ideas into a plot.
Now this sounds like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but in reverse.

At the end of the Dracula poll, will you explain how each of the cast influences the final tone of/ any minor plot changes to the movie?
oh I’m happy to do that right now!
-Jimmy Stewart grounds the movie and is a terrific pick for Jonathan because his career was full of stories of ordinary men set into slowly unraveling, reality-challenging environments that irrevocably change their characters and push them past their limits—there are sketches of what Jonathan goes through already present in It’s A Wonderful Life, Rear Window, even the Thin Man sequel he was in. Jimmy brings the tone of boy next door, Capra-esque hometown normalcy that slowly gets turned upside down as he meets…
-Gloria Holden as the Count! who is pure gothic horror but laced with psychological complexity, wants and needs that push beyond the typical Universal horror aesthetic. She’s a perfect transition into the fantasy side of the story because she can meet Jimmy in his reality world….but chooses not to.
-the brides can’t possibly meet Jimmy in reality! They’re Betty, Lauren and Marilyn! They’re ethereal next level bombshells and the first sign this movie might trend a little camp. I expect their scene to dip into dream sequence imagery, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Vincente Minelli is brought in just to stage their entrance.
-I am hugely embarrassed to say I have not seen enough of Setsuko Hara’s work to tell you how her Mina impacts the tone, though I suspect she brings a quiet, steady, subtle quality that contrasts with Judy Garland’s mannered but sincere Lucy. There is absolutely an unnecessary talent show scene early on that gets Lucy singing in front of a crowd of adoring concertgoers.
-Toshiro Mifune needs no introduction. His Quincey is blindingly sexy and always finds the good lighting in every shot.
-Vincent Price’s Seward and Veidt’s Renfield up the, ahh, bisexual undercurrents of their scenes together into new dimensions. I fear again the movie tips a little into camp here.
-Sidney Poitier’s Holmwood brings us back to grounded reality; his performance is rooted in calm, subtle realism, with only the occasional explosions into grand emotional sweeps. This balances him really well with Judy’s Lucy, where she brings a flighty magical transparency and he brings the depth, intelligence, and calm.
-Mary Philbin suddenly tips the movie into silent film territory and goes a bit avante-garde as the agonized mother. It would be nice to have a shot here where Jonathan realizes, in some way, that he is suddenly soundless as pipe organ music ramps up over the scene and he’s left voiceless: he can only speak again when it’s too late to save her, and the movie switches back to talkie mode.
We haven’t cast some other players yet but this is what I’m seeing so far from the electorate’s choices :D

i'm rewatching the young dracula pilot and i have some thoughts
the beginning is iconic - and the only time vlad is talking to and looking at the camera as far as i remember
"she's so much like her mother" the count not liking ingrid because of his complicated relationship with magda, her leaving him for a werewolf as we found out later in this ep and he's taking it out on his daughter - it all makes sense
robin hanging upside down in his room - what a legend
the first episode is actually doing such a good job setting up all the characters and the story
i like how it's mostly just a silly little show but it already introduces the dread and pressure vlad faces of becoming a vampire and that feels so real and sad
the scene where the count puts the cape on vlad in the mirror hit me harder than i thought it would probably bc i know where the show is going
"we're vampires. can't escape it. it's your destiny"
renfield in the nurse (?) outfit lmao
"have you come to donate blood?" "no" "it's for a good cause?" "what cause?" "lunch" alskdkjdd
i'm sorry but how did robin go from his hiding spot under the bed out of the door and walk around the castle without vlad, ingrid or zoltan noticing?? they're standing right there!!
the branaughs all going up to the castle one by one - really funny
ingrid is already a fashion icon
did renfield get tortured by a tarantula i totally missed that before and wow am i glad we did not really see that
and then he kills it (imelda) "if it's any consolation, master, she wouldn't have felt a thing" "except your huge bottom squishing her" INGRID lmao
love seeing vlad and ingrid teaming up and act like typical young brother/big sister
the count being dramatic as always but i feel like he gets introduced to being more formidable than he later is but i like it more this way than the borderline only comedy figure he becomes later
the actors are all really good actually but you can tell it's the first episode and it's still a little awkward and they're still working on the dynamics
all in all what a nice little kids gothic horror show that i have become obsessed with, totally accidental, six years ago
