it's better to keep everyone away than to risk under- or overestimating anyone he chose to let in

he had a close knit group of friends in the rosier twins, barty and dorcas, and he told himself time and time again that he didn't want or need more

which is why you walking into his life and choosing him effortlessly was so disorientating and hard to swallow for him

someone who was considered lively, beautiful and pure like you had no place in regulus' orbit, he was certain of it

yet you just settled down like it was the most natural thing in the world

sunshine!reader who loves regulus not just despite every obstacle he has thrown up to keep you from doing so, but even specifically because of it

it took him a long time to get used to the feeling, let alone act on it or speak it out loud

i believe most romances with regulus, especially from "unexpected" people, would have to start as friendships that he slowly builds up trust and comfort in

which any sunshine!reader would fully understand and encourage him in, making him all the more infatuated

i think regulus would view sunshine!reader as kind of holy, someone who can do no wrong and is perfect all the way through

so if you were to ever reference or communicate any insecurity about being too much, too loud, too bubbly, etc. he would be just so thoroughly confused

i think he might not even understand what you're trying to say until a while later

at which point he would approach you and be like "hold up, what?"

which hits even more if this happens pre-relationship while he's still getting comfortable with you, but his reaction just couldn't be contained

it was simply unheard of to regulus that you view yourself as anything short of perfect

similarly, if anyone made jokes at your expense, he would wield every bit of his harsh facade and reputation that precedes him to ensure it doesn't happen again

barty and evan understand from pretty much the first week of your friendship that you are not to be messed with, and they respect both you and regulus for it

they need to tease someone though, so instead they focus all their energy on how lovesick regulus is becoming

when it comes to jealousy, i think regulus would be more jealous of what sunshine!reader can do than who they're with

it seems to him that everything is easy to you, that it just comes naturally to you to be such a kind individual

i believe his love for you would be permanently settled when he comes to understand that it's not easy for you, but that you do it anyway; it's not natural, it's hard fought for

yet, as he goes on his own healing journey, a part of him would be so envious to hear you navigate through difficult feelings with kindness and logic or see you get on so openly with those around you

he would be so glad you are able to do that and that you get to be completely surrounded by love – he just longs for it for himself

i think he would also be jealous of your friends for being able to match your energy so well

there would be many many conversations where regulus goes "you deserve better" and you go "but i want you"

seeing you and sirius shoot banter back and forth like it's nothing or see you run up to braid lily's hair at a moment's notice would both heal and break something in regulus

he's once again confronted with everything he could be, feels like maybe he should be, but can't

because regulus' personality, no matter how healed he is, is never super outgoing and sunshine-y – when he's with close friends, he is much more lively and filled with banter and jokes and even some physical affection. but it's never the same as your friends.

you keep showing him every day that he doesn't need to be, that you love him because he's him; he doesn't need to change for you

when he becomes more comfortable in your relationship, his ideal time of voicing any such feelings would be at night in bed

with the lights turned off and his face buried in your skin somewhere, he feels safe enough to be vulnerable with you

you'll drag your fingers through his hair and talk him down every time

the best part of being with regulus is getting to love him through the healing process and see him separate his personality from his coping mechanisms and fully blossom

i think it would be a bumpy ride, but what he needs throughout it all is a rock

The moment Regulus sees your tiny body plummet to the water, his heart stops. He had not been expecting you to fly over the lake while he was skipping stones, but the splash from one of the particularly heavy ones he'd chosen doused your wings, and you'd fallen instantly.

He rushes in without a second thought, but he's glad you're in shallow waters, because he can't swim.

He scoops your tiny, trembling form off of the surface of the water where you'd been trying to float. Your wings are soaked through, pathetically droopy, and you give a feeble cough as he totes you back to shore.

"I'm sorry," He rushes to apologize, the legs of his trousers wet as he sits back on the grass. He has a hard time finding his wand in the tall grass by the lake, but once he does a drying spell is tumbling from his lips, and you're devoid of all lake water.

You're still weak with your adrenaline crash when you sit up in his palm, looking disoriented and defeated as you stare warily up at him.

"I'm sorry," He repeats, dark eyes oozing with sympathy, "I didn't mean to hit you. Are you okay?"

"I'm dry," You marvel, glancing at his wand, "Thank you."

"Don't mention it." He shakes his head, "You're not hurt, are you?"

"I don't think so," You muse, wobbling to your feet as Regulus tries keeping his hand as steady as possible. You lurch sideways at an involuntary tremor, and he juts his thumb out so that you can grab it for stability.

"Sorry," He moves to put you down in the grass, but you cling to his thumb like a lifeline.

"You have pretty hair," You muse, walking up his arm like a tightrope as your wings drop golden dust from their glittering surface, "Can I fix it for you?"

"Uh," Regulus blanches as you flutter beside his head, miniscule fingers combing through his individual strands of hair, "Um, I suppose? What are you going to do?"

"I'll braid it like mine," You offer, turning your head so that Regulus can see a small, fragile braid running up the side of your bun.

"Alright," He nods slowly, then, "What were you doing over the lake?"

"I wanted to say hi to the fish," You explain, fingers already grouping and twisting his hair, "They're my friends."

"That's cool." Regulus keeps his eyes on the waters surface, knowing there's a lot more than fish down there, "Have you ever met the squid?"

"Oh, yes!" You nod cheerily, and Regulus shudders as the way your hands rake through his hair sends a shiver up your spine, "He likes the gifts I give him."

"Gifts?"

"Mostly flowers," You nod, "Speaking of: Can you hand me that daisy there, please?"

Regulus plucks the thin green stem from the grass, holding it up to you cautiously, "Why?"

"It's pretty in your hair," You explain simply, tucking the flower into his braid.

The flower doesn't last ten minutes in his hair after you flutter away. In fact, Regulus hunches in the shadows of the castle to undo the strands you've woven together in his hair, shaking it out before anyone sees him. But the daisy he slips between two pages of an old textbook, and when it's charmed to be unbreakable, the dried flower goes in his pocket.

STARFLOWERS FOR SIRIUS SO TRUE but the real question is, what flower does Reg get tattooed for James?

the obvious answer may be sunflowers but no. I'd argue marigolds. they symbolise the sun, postive energy. used to show passion, and associated with the lion and new beginnings for couples.

so lilies for lily, starflowers for sirius, marigolds for james.

and for some of his friends:

pandora- bluebells. representing gratidude, constancy, and everlasting love. also associated with witchcraft/faeries. common in ireland, where pandora is from. disturbing bluebells is seen to bring bad luck.

dorcas- corncockles. i feel like regulus and dorcas' friendship is a lot more playful, mocking and teasing each other, arguing, etc. so i feel like regulus would mostly assign this as dorcas' for the cock joke. but also it's a very pretty flower that is also poisonous and grows in meadows (dorcas' last name). also shakespeare uses corncockles a lot in his work, showing people may have worn them in the past as a sign of rebellion.

Like most ppl think he’s this proper, kind of stuck up guy raised in the House of Black who are too sophisticated to swear

But really whenever he’s alone, or with a few certain people, he swears like a trucker

So one day he’s in the potions room working on smth extracurricular, and James comes in cuz he has to make up a lesson

Reg happens to have just spilled smth, and James walks in to hear “shit, fuck, merlin’s motherfucking arse! This fucking jar…”

James just stands there for a moment, flabbergasted, before he bursts out laughing

Reg whips around and turns red, and ofc he threatens James and all that, but James is, for once, not the least bit threatened cuz Regulus looks way too cute when he’s blushing

regulus and james being the only single ones in their friend groups so every time they go out to parties they end up kissing and making out which eventually leads to hookups when nobody else catches their eye and that eventually leads to them going out and instead of looking foward to finding someone to kiss they're looking forward to each other. james dresses up in regulus' favorite colors and constantly wears a belt because regulus loves tugging on it and pushing him around and regulus throws around more rings than he usually wears because he knows how it drives james crazy and— they're both trying so hard to impress each other.

and all of their friends are just watching it from afar and betting on when they're finally gonna do something about it and get the fuck together already

dorcas thinks they’re a bit odd but love them as the freaks they are

no, but in all honesty i can picture this so vividly. regulus has such an obsessive personality, he is bound to have some niche and severe interests

if that is bugs and it is a shared one between you two – then that's just fantastic luck, yeah?

regulus is the type of person to not just liking something, it becomes his everything (that boy has never felt normal about anything ever)

finding someone who loves the same things he loves would slot them right beside that interest in his mind, thus making any infatuation that much stronger; he associates you with what you both love

i think his favourite bugs would be spiders, of course, but also termites and beetles

there is definitely a certain level of "this creature is so misunderstood and i relate to it" going on here

on that note, he is more inclined to hyperfixate on bugs like worms, cockroaches, fleas, bed bugs, etc. than the more accepted/cutsey bugs like bees and butterflies

though i don't really picture him disliking any bugs – he would rather spend his time focusing on the ones that resonate with him

regulus most certainly has a scientific approach to his interest

he reads and learns and then reads some more and learns some more; he wants to know all there is to know and be able to use jargon and refer to biology when discussing bugs

if you struggle with reading, he is more than happy (see: fucking elated) over being able to recap any relevant book to you and teach you what he just learned

if you enjoy it as well, he wants nothing more than to ditch your coursework for the night and read up on your own interests side by side<3

my regulus is a poet, and i imagine that he would use all his scientific knowledge of bugs to use them as more effective and accurate metaphors

i think his favourite bug to refer to in poetry is cicadas

he is usually very guarded with his poetry because he writes to process and work through his intense emotions, but your shared love for bugs would be a lower-barrier entry to sharing his writing with you

he would show you some poems that focus primarily on bugs, maybe even use the excuse that you can double check them for "accuracy", and over time he grows more confident in showing you more and more

sitting with regulus in a corner of the slytherin common room or the edge of the courtyard whenever you get some alone time, looking for and admiring the bugs that creep around there

taking note of what spots in the castle are the most abundant with insects and going there together

maybe he would even call you an insect-related pet name? my suggestions: mantis, hopper, buzz — maybe any french speakers know of some cute ones in french?!
