yknow it’s occurring to me that I just sorta skated past Red Helena and I haven’t got a single fucking clue what her deal is. Sleepwalker? Was she named sleepwalker? You tagged ONE post with sleepwalker and that is unironically an S-tier villain name. I miss her (didn’t ever know her)

SLEEPWALKER MY BELOVED!!!!!! she's a rotten little freak (affectionate) yes that is her name! a bit ago i went back and tagged the other posts under "sleepwalker" as well but tbh she doesn't have that many posts to begin with MFDHJBF

UM yea Sleepwalker (also Batman but primarily "red helena" "evil helena" and "freak helena" if you will) is the main acting villain of CTDE arc 3 ...!!!

arc 1 is focused on a PG problem, arc 2 goes to a SG problem, so arc 3 is helena's turn in the spotlight (despite trying so so hard not to get into the spotlight if she can help it). and to suit the formula obviously the villain has to be some kind of helena (famously pg herself is the antagonist of arc 1 and red lantern soupey for arc 2)

😭 she doesn't like it but honestly she should've seen the formula coming for her. babe its YOUR turn to unpack stuff about yourself while defeating the antagonist. who is also you

Sleepwalker is from a different place in the multiverse (Third Known CTDE Verse!!! (or Fourth i guess since carrie's is mentioned first)). in the CTDE, things like "the multiverse" aren't really Known except in very niche cases (eg. kara and helena obviously know about it since they are From A Different Earth) and power levels are generally hard-capped before reaching Close to multiversal levels. even the strongest characters can't affect anything beyond the boundaries of their own universe yknow. obviously this makes Sleepwalker an anomaly because she's very much breaking into the primary CTDE world and using Weird Powers about it too

well but okay so, she's basically, Helena Wayne From A Different World, more or less. her world roughly follows the same backstory as helena's, up until the day the big dumb apocalypse war is lost & the girlies get transported out of their universe (you know—this day)

in Sleepwalker's world, the war is lost as usual, but kara disappears Without Her. she's been left behind in the bad ending and had to make it on her own on an earth that's already fallen. it's kind of hopeless and there aren't a lot of pockets left for survival to exist in...

she picks up the Batman name ofc. and she also picks up a lot of new lessons in efficiency and brutality. it's rough out there so she's had to learn to play rough in return... she doesn't have a gadget guy or anything so most of her weaponry is scavenged tech that's barely safe to use, but when you're fighting out of a cornered position like she is, 😔✌

obviously she wants Out. this shit sucks. and she's bitter and jaded about a lot of things and holding on to a lot of grudges. shes not having a GOOD time. even less so when a brand-new bit of multiversal awareness shows her that it didn't have to be this way at all and there's Another Her that's living a way better life (WITH the girl who vanished no less)

basically once she's in play it's like. Sleepwalker is not stranded on primary earth. sleepwalker is loose. and shes making it helena's problem 😭

AND SHE HAS A GUN? AND NEW WEIRD MULTIVERSAL POWERS?

yea so there's a Plot Woman who exists in the CTDE solely to facilitate the plot of arc 3 (and then fuck off once it's done). she's sleepwalker's sponsor who's giving her the power required to not only transcend her home territory but also to affect things on the primary earth on a level no one inside the universe can overturn

as a bonus for being an interesting little bug, Sleepwalker has been given a minor restricted dominion over dreams and sleep (hence the overall Theme and Name). her swag new powers are the reason Arc 3 opens with both peegee and soupeygirl falling into an unnatural sleep that no one can disrupt. because it's a state they were put into by power of a scale and nature no one can approach, because we're working from inside the house. yknow?

the weeks leading up to Arc 3 had people increasingly gripped by nightmares until one day the karas don't wake up anymore. that's Sleepwalker, baby! the backfire is that sleepwalker is also extremely haunted in her own dreams but that's probably fine for her mental wellbeing i think

so you have like helena and raven fussing about their respective favorite karas and trying to solve all that while sleepwalker is out Lurking and like theoretically the league is free to help out for once in their lives but the sleep powder is in a universe-bending weight class so its like "superman finally showed up just in time to do fuck all"

as for how to deal with sleepwalker and the sleepy bitch situation i completely trust helena to take her out back and Handle It. but this post is getting long + solving it is what Arc 3 is like About so suffice to say

The Amphibious Dolthruk

My response to this week’s BestiaryPosting challenge, from @maniculum

Thought process under the cut…

"The Dolthruk is so called from the color of [redacted]. They live in the river, four-footed animals equally at home on land or in the water and more than twenty cubits long. The Dolthruk is armed with monstrous teeth and claws and has such a tough skin that however hard you throw a stone at it, you will not hurt the beast. It goes into the water at night and rests by day on the land. It lays its eggs on land, and both male and female take it in turns to hatch them. A certain kind of fish whose serrated spines tear open the soft part of their belly kills them. Alone among animals they can move their upper jaw and hold the lower one still. From their dung is made an ointment with which old women and faded whores [bestiary is judgmental today, damn] anoint their faces, and appear beautiful until their sweat washes it off."

I spent an awful lot of time mulling this one over. We actually get quite a bit of description for a change, which is nice to work with too!

We also know that it's a beast, rather than a serpent or any other manner of creature. This is where it gets a little complicated, as we also know it lays eggs! My first thought was making it a monotreme; the idea of a monstrous platypus really tickled me, but I couldn't quite work out how to manage 'monstrous teeth' in what is a rather toothless clade of critters (@silverhart-makes-art came up with a solution and a brilliant rendition of this concept!), so I went down a whole rabbit hole of early mammals and mammal ancestors. The most impressive teeth (and claws) definitely belong to the therapsids, and specifically, the gorgonopsids. So, we end up with an amphibious gorgonopsid!

Incidentally, gorgonopsids are far weirder than an initial look would indicate - did you know that a lot of early therapsids had a pineal eye or light sensing organ atop their head (similar to modern tuataras), as well as very weird joints!

We have webbed feet so it can get around in the water when it is not lounging on land and taking turns to care for its eggs and young. I also gave it a shorter neck, and lowered the eye socket in the skull so that, at a glance at least, it looks more like the upper jaw can be moved while the lower jaw remains still.

We also have the issue of the very tough skin. Now, as its is a beast rather than a serpent, I initially didn't want to give it armour plates. I also considered a pangolin's scales, but felt the overlapping scales would trap water and not be particularly hygienic. Now, the fearsome hippopotamus has famously thick skin, but I couldn't quite work out how to represent this. Rhinos are similar, but a little more obvious, until a solution struck me. Hence, we now have an amphibious gorgonopsid lounging near its nest with armour plates inspired by Albrecht Dürer's Rhinoceros…

Of course, we also have 'a certain kind of fish' in the water. Largely based on the weaver fish, a fishie native to British waters, with distinctive venomous spines! Best stay out of the water for now, Dolthruk!

Redacted Theory

@frenchiefitzhere had me screaming at her about my thoughts on this so I'm putting it here too, just for fun! Also tagging @sincerelywhistler <3

We know Blake wants to save Bestie. The Sovereigns want out. They're using Bestie to manipulate Blake into the places they need him to be, Bestie is collateral damage, but so is Blake.

Blake is a very powerful Seer, but I doubt even a Seer can pull the Sovereigns out of their prison. They DO need him to come to them, but not as a soul which is what he would normally be if he died and hit the river by which time he'd barely have memories, let alone powers. They need him alive. The only way to force him to come to them is to threated Bestie so they can "break" him, but that does not mean what you think it does.

Using Brachiums promise to owe them a favour and Blake's desperation to save Bestie, the Sovereigns could cut Blakes threads. At the moment of cutting, what if they harnessed that power, snatched those loose ends, desperately searching for something to wrap themselves around? What if the "Weavers" lived up to their name and wove a new life form?

And that's what Hush is.

That's why he has no core and is the "silence" in the Spellsong. Not human, not demon. Not a Sovereign. More and less, something new. Magic unfettered. A brand new being, old and young at the same time with just one command: to free free the most dangerous beings in the universe.

And Blake will be pushed back into Elegy without his powers, full of rage and vengence and utterly helpless. And Hush will run, persued by Brachium who tried to kill him from the day he was born.

I read that and immediately had four different Shepards yelling at me in my head (I blame @shadoedseptmbr's Aedan tags) 🤣🤣🤣

Weaver would in fact include hamster pictures, but they'd be macro pictures of like, whiskers and toes only.

The whole account would all only be macro photos. No tags, no comments, no explanations, no definitions. No time stamps or metadata, all expertly wiped, no location cues beyond maybe the quality of the light... which isn't that hard to manipulate after all, if you've got an omnitool and some good flashlight/spotlight blueprints.

It's all just exquisite close-ups of pieces of gravel and seeds and leaves and pollen or fractions of circuit boards and weird screws or clamps or the odd pattern of wear on a [redacted but clearly the Mako for those in the know] tire.

She and Aeden would clearly get along great.

Ngaio would flat out refuse. (She would've done it if she'd met Traynor sooner, because she can refuse Traynor nothing, but that was too late, on several levels.)

Ella would be asked to make an account after she gets her N7 status and starts showing up in the news periodically; she's told to try and soften the public image of the infamous Butcher of Torfan.

She does set something up, posts some generic pretty Alliance Training Stock Photos, the kind you get in a recruiters office, but that's it for ages.

And then she posts five separate in-depth tutorials in a row, three on astronomy and two on France of all things, one specifically about the language, one about cooking.

Then nothing again.

And then a three-part series on astral navigation, and how different species figured out the math for measuring where the fuck they were in space.

Then a thing on baking with chocolate, including how to convert levo recipes to dextro (and vice versa) and which things were more likely to translate into something that might still taste good.

She never shows herself however, so it does fuck all to counter all the pics and videos of her stalking around heavily armed and armored in full gear, occasionally with a bit of a blue halo from biotics usage, generally glaring or scowling as she avoids reporters trying to get a comment.

Most people don't connect her socials to the Butcher of Torfan at all, and those that do assume someone else is running the account in her name in a failed Alliance PR stunt.

After the Battle of the Citadel, there are enough recordings of her helping with clean-up efforts and being polite at formal ceremonies to make it clear that the Butcher and the Shepard-who-goes-on-weird-tangents-on-social-media are actually the same person, who is also POSSIBLY a galactic hero, so the whispers about Torfan finally start to fade out a little...

And then she dies.

Ward would be some terrifying (but delightful once you got past the scowl) combination of Adam Savage and Mercury Stardust because he would legit show people how to take things apart and upgrade and fix them (and which bits are 'legal-ish' depending on whether they technically own them or not) but also things probably explode sometimes (or at the very least spark A Lot™️) and Tali guests wearing glorious (flame-retardant) Turian fashions and ALSO sometimes PROPRIETARY TECH THAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE and no one ever bleeps ANY of Jack's swearing and sometimes the three of them are gleefully trying to make something that probably shouldn't exist and some poor Alliance PR officer cries in their office sometimes because they are actually spectacular PR and GREAT for morale and also they break so many TOS's but it's Commander Fucking Shepard so who's gonna tell him to stop?

There's actually a monster in Dark Archive called Redacted, The Weaver In Dreams that sounds quite similar to the Primeval Ideal, though obviously not nearly as powerful.

Well, look at that! I'm sad they don't have a picture. The [Humanoid] tag tells me that this critter is probably a spider-themed caster; it's certainly got some interesting abilities! However, something is bothering me, because I feel like I would have gone ga-ga over this thing if I read it... and I actually have Archive, and HAVE read it.

The Archives of Nethys page I linked above says it's in Dark Archive, page 16, but unless it was added in a later printing, no it's not. I've searched Dark Archive back to front for "Weaver," "Nameless," and "Redacted," but there's no mention of this critter in there. What's going on?

you literally never miss with your chapters I hope you know that. With each new part I feel even more immersed. i have a few questions as well!

You mentioned that the animatronics funnel power back to the capital. How much is kept for their own village? Is there any resentment in outer villages towards those living in the capital?

Additionally, what to those living in the capital do for work? Do they mostly have jobs that revolve around serving nobility?

If Freddy hasn’t been king since the start, were the previous kings the other Freddys from the previous games? Was he always made with a king in mind?

How do the citizens of Automata feel about the monarchy if this is the case? Knowing Freddy and his family were literally built to live lives of luxury. It’d be similar to human governments, but it feels different when you are forged from metal to be a ruler.

I've been catching up rather quickly with the redacted lore and events. I have finally catch up with the balance series with brachium, elliot, Blake, and all them. And all I can say is Blake is probably my favorite "villian" character in thee entire redactedverse I feel like I'm going absolutely feral for this man and not just for the romantic type (although it plays apart of why I like him) but his character his personality and motives its just so interesting to me. Overall he's just a cool ass character in my opinion.
