so squall being mistaken for a ghost in the first book because people caught glimpses of him and heard him humming in the deucalion when he was visiting on the gossamer leaves two possibilities, since we know he can only be heard or seen when he's on the gossamer if he wants to be

he forgot himself while looking around / spying on morrigan, accidentally let himself be spotted or heard for a second before realizing he had to bail

he was doing it on purpose to fuck with people

i prefer door #2, partially because it's funnier, partially because i don't think he'd be careless enough to be seen by accident, and partially because... i mean look, if you can't actually physically interact with anything around you, you gotta do something to entertain yourself.

Controversial opinion: I think the nevermore movie musical should allow a Ezra Squall and only Ezra Squall to break the fourth wall.

And they usually use his “awareness” of the camera to give him just a slightly unsettling feeling, like he’s seeing more than everyone else.

And then in the Wundersmith movie when Morrigan says she doesn’t know any songs he just stares directly in the camera like he’s in The Office.

At this time of year it's important to know

I went on a Squall hunt -

-And look what I found. I was searching for Ezra Squall’s real age in the books, but found that it is not stated anywhere. The time measurements in Nevermoor are confusing, so this is going to be hard. Now, I have access to some of the Book of Ghostly Hours — so I decided to trace Morrigan’s steps and go on a Squall hunt.

Spoiler: I did manage to calculate his true age! (Or at least its lower boundary, as precisely as I could)

So, we know that Ezra was 7 in the summer of the second year of the Age of Endings. That’s a vaguely solid point to start building from.

These are for reference: the ghostly hours between the first and the last point at which we (the readers) see Ezra in the Book of Ghostly Hours.

The last point being:

So, this is 10 years after our starting point, so Ezra is 17 here. (We know that Eventide was in winter so he already had his birthday by then. All Wundermiths are born on Eventide: a reminder.) At 17, he was still in the school of Wundrous Arts, un-evil.

Here is what I found about the known ages. Ezra was 7 in the second year of the Age of Endings, and we don’t actually know how long it was. Sigh. I’m researching it as I’m writing this, so I wouldn’t expect a concrete conclusion.

I found when the Courage Square Massacre happened: Winter of Nine, Age of East Winds.

Ok, so Ezra was 26 when he started his thing. Fucking young if you ask me. (I’m 15 as of this moment so what do I know. Maybe I will also massacre my friends and try enslave the Brave City of Nevermoor when I turn 26.) It’s winter, so maybe he just had a really shitty fucking birthday. Not an apologist, just guessing.

Alright, so we know that the Courage Square happened around (read: at least) a hundred years from Nevermoor: the hunt for Morrigan Crow, because it is stated when Mog and Hawthorne are studying for the Book trial. In Hollowpox, it would have been at least 103 years.

So, here comes the unexpected but concrete conclusion:

Ezra Squall is at least (around) 129 years old!
