Today, less than 20 percent of the world’s silver supply comes from recycled sources — typically from discarded electronics, old jewelry, cutlery, manufacturing scrap and other industry waste. Once collected, recycled silver undergoes a refining process where impurities are removed, and the metal is recast to be used again.
Increasing recycled precious metals is a game changer.

Tasmanian Artist Matt Sloane Crafted This Horse Sculpture Out Of Farm Metal Scraps
Matt Sloane, a Tasmanian artist based in Copping, specializes in creating unique metal sculptures using recycled materials such as scrap steel, old farm machinery, and garden tools. His work often features animals, showcasing his ability to transform discarded items into impressive pieces of art. Among his notable creations is a life-sized sculpture of a horse made entirely from scrap metal. Sloane's dedication to his craft is evident in the intricate details and the significant amount of time he invests in each piece, making his sculptures stand out in the field of recycled art.

I'm worried about electronic waste, e-waste recycling, and such loss of resources.
That's real. For what it's worth, I think it's something we're going to get a LOT better at. The raw materials - and even partially depleted materials that can be downcycled - are too valuable to be left forever.
Tip for anyone worried about e-waste or looking to be more environmentally conscious: Whenever I have something electronic that dies (this includes batteries, power cords, string lights, and vapes), I stick it in an out-of-the-way drawer, and then once every year or two, I bring it all to either an e-waste recycling place or an e-waste disposal place (which, my understanding is most e-waste disposal places do a lot of materials reclamation as well, though if I'm wrong someone please correct me). I just look online to find a place.
Sometimes it's a bit of a drive, but it's so worth it. I encourage others to do the same!
Anyway, here's some headlines about e-waste to hopefully lift your spirits:
^That's Western Australia, not Washington state.

Rare earth metals are not as rare as their name suggests. However, they are indispensable for the modern economy. After all, these 17 metals are essential raw materials for digitalization and the energy transition. They are found in smartphones, computers, screens and batteries—without them, no electric motor would run and no wind turbine would turn. Because Europe is almost entirely dependent on imports from China, these raw materials are considered to be critical.

Lily Gladstone at the Met Gala 2024, wearing gown by Gabriela Hearst, and jewellery by Kiowa jeweler Keri Ataumbi.
At first, it seems a rather muted look for the Met Gala, but every detail has significance. Read the story in Vogue.
The gown and cape are embroidered with constellations of recycled silver stars.
“Our ancestors are in the constellations - we're star people.” Keri Ataumbi.

Some recycled bottle cap pins I made :)
The string ones were from some old thrifted curtains
[Image ID: 8 homemade pins. Five of them are bottle cap pins. One is a large green pin woh a white spiral, one is a large darker green pin with a sunflower, one is a smaller anarchy symbol, one is a red one with they/them pronouns written on it, and the fifth one is a skull with eyes. The last three pins are string tassels attached to safety pins. End ID]

Check out this BIG blue gorilla sculpture by Don Kennell at Philadelphia Zoo made out of car hoods! Photographed this past weekend during a zoo visit.
“Our big blue gorilla sits 13-feet tall and 12-feet deep! It's constructed from around 55 salvaged car hoods. These car parts retain their original factory paint - only a UV resistant clear coat was added.
This commanding sculpture is part of a process of artistic transformation where something discarded is given new life. Artist Don Kennell from Santa Fe, New Mexico, uses junkyard cars to remind us about habitat loss to animals often impacted by the construction of highways, parking lots, and facilities for cars and other modern demands.”

Sparks fly as a worker engaged in dismantling the huge Wrigley gum sign overlooking Times Square cuts through a steel support with a torch, March 2, 1942. Two months earlier, the U.S. had launched the “Salvage for Victory” program, in which metal salvaged from ordinary civilian objects was used to build ships, airplanes, bombs, etc., for the war.

Recycled Gears Transformed Into Mechanical Creatures
by Katie Hosmer - My Modern Met, December 14, 2012
Tumblr media
What might seem like a pile of junk to the average person is creative inspiration for Chicago-based artist Justin Gershenson-Gates. With a website aptly entitled A Mechanical Mind, Gershenson-Gates has a knack for transforming dusty old parts into all kinds of unique and clever designs. In particular, his insect-shaped creations, ranging from grasshoppers to dragonflies to spiders, are whimsical interpretations of the recycled gears. He is interested in featuring the often overlooked details of a machine's interior, and he says, “My aim is to show the beauty of the mechanical world, a place generally hidden from the public behind metal and glass.”
Raised by a gearhead, the artist finds that working with mechanisms has always been a part of his nature. As a young boy, he would take his toys apart but could never quite figure out how to put them back together. Now, as an adult, he has mastered the art of seeing beauty in broken, and otherwise useless, gadgets.
Gershenson-Gates uses countless pieces, including watch straps, winding stems, gears, springs, cogs, plates, light bulbs, and more, to form the body parts of each insect, and one piece takes an average of several hours to complete. The artist uses complex soldering to connect all of the sections and the delicate designs are free from any glue or resin. Fans of the artwork can purchase these, as well as a variety of intricate jewelry, on Gershenson-Gates' Etsy shop, here.

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed an environmentally friendly method for recycling and purifying metals. Using gold earrings from a pawnshop in Gothenburg and biodiesel from the nearest filling station, the discovery could change an industry that is currently dependent on large amounts of fossil oil. "Pure metals have a number of uses in a modern society, not least for the development of green technologies. Our research shows how the metal industry can accelerate the transition from fossil to bio-based solvents," says Mark Foreman, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Chalmers. Gold is not only a precious metal that is a symbol of wealth in jewellery and gold bars. A regular smartphone contains slightly more than 0.03 grams of gold, and the metal is found in most of the everyday electronics we have around us. It is also important in components for the aerospace industry. For many applications, gold is mixed with other metals, which then need to be removed when the valuable gold sheet is to be recycled. In this process, organic solvents, such as fossil diesel, are used.
