Something that still scares me and makes me worry about my future: I've only ever been able to focus on books when i'm in school. I can't read my physical books at home without forcing myself to really, really concentrate. It's rough. I think part of this problem stems from mental association. I started reading novels in elementary school, and I never really read them at home. Years of doing that probably instilled in me a feeling that I can only focus when i'm at school.
But also… there's the fact that school has big tile lights. I pray you know what I mean. They're rectangular, they're all over the ceiling, and they emit light over such a wide space that you're never left wanting for more light. This makes for excellent conditions in which to read. Also, schools have mild background noise, which helps. I can't read in total silence. Nor can I read when it's too loud. I need some sort of balance. So a school library or quiet classroom makes for the perfect environment. Perfect lighting, perfect sound volume, perfect everything.
And I'm just always terrified that I'll be unable to focus well if i leave for college. I'm worried that these factors which help me read at High School won't be the same at a college, and so my reading will be all thrown off. At the worst end of my irrational fears lies a paranoia that i'll never be able to read again after leaving high school. I know it's somewhat irrational, but I can't prove it isn't true, so the thought continually haunts me. I hate it.

Random goon: Hey boss, were you the one to pick that name as an alias? And why this one?
Red Hood : I used to have another name, before... A long time ago. But that person is dead now. I get to choose for myself now, they can't take that from me. I won't let them.
Goon: Huh.
***
Random Goon: Say boss, why do you never take off your shirt in front of us?
Red Hood: Well uh, I actually have that really fucked scar on my chest and I'm not comfortable with...
Random Goon: Don't worry boss, we get it, you don't have to explain yourself to us.
***
Red Hood, high on some toxin: God, I wish my family...
Random Goon (on boss-sitting duty): why not try reaching out to them?
Red Hood: They would never accept me as I am now... They wouldn't agree with my so-called "life choices". Besides, they don't miss me, they miss the person they think I used to be... I wasn't even a man when I last saw them.
Random Goon: Damn boss, that sucks.
***
And then the goons throw the Red Hood a party on trans visibility day and Jason is so confused he straight up cries.

Spent a ridiculous amount of time last night obsessively editing my hand written zines in Photoshop to take away any tiny blemishes so they were definitely readable.
Whatever. Understand or don't.

What we need to do is convince all the disney adults in america that high speed rail would be a preferable way of getting to disneyworld compared to driving or flying. We could maybe harness their fondness for the monorail or something, but this is a group of people that has time, income, and passion that we could leverage. If we could direct 5% of the enthusiasm they have for limited edition popcorn buckets into calling their representatives and demanding high-speed interstate rail, we could get it by 2030

My dear friends: When a librarian or teacher says "Audiobooks count as reading", we do not literally mean that audiobooks are the same as decoding visual meaning via symbols representing sounds. We mean, among other things:
Audiobooks can expose listeners to new vocabulary and forms of syntax.
Audiobooks can present listeners with long-form fictional narratives with engaging characters, interesting literary devices, and poetic turns of phrase.
Audiobooks can teach listeners new information in a long-form manner that goes into depth or wide breadth on a particular subject or subjects.
Audiobooks can help listeners' verbal comprehension skills.
Audiobooks can do all these things without presenting the same difficulties to blind, low vision, partially sighted, visually impaired, or dyslexic listeners; listeners with ADHD; listeners who experience physical difficulty with holding a book or e-reader; or listeners who are disabled in a host of other ways that a physical book or e-reader might present.
The written word is not specially imbued with magical noble worth above the spoken word, and if you think it is, you may have some ableism and/or racism to deconstruct.

Great. Just great. The school library's going to be closed on Wednesday and (I think) at least half the day on Thursday. That's definitely going to affect my reading. I just know it. Because in the library, there's less kids around me. Less people to make judgemental stares when I read out loud and do voices and stuff. In a more enclosed space (like the resource room at the school, for example), I just know it's going to become a problem for me. I'm getting really used to spending time in the library. I used to read in the resource room, but the library just feels easier to read in now.
Also, lunchtime. That's the real killer. If the library is closed at lunchtime, that means I have to either sit in the nlisty hallways, or go sit in a classroom (where a bunch of kids eat, and where the disgusting smells of a million different foods are liable to mingle and make me uncomfortable). So this is just great. It's probably going to mean I don't get to read any for the next few days. So that's really making me feel miserable again. If this is my last chance to read (or last chance in a setting where I actually know I can read) just let me enjoy it! sigh…
