I just watched Conan the Barbarian (1982) and why I am literally so emotional over Conan and Valeriaā€™s relationship likeā€¦
what do you MEAN she was also killed by Thulsa Doom, who took away his family, his home, and turned him into a warrior who had long since forgotten kindness?
what do you mean that her last words were ā€˜keep me warmā€™ when both of them were wandering travellers, and before that warriors, what do you mean they found warm in each other
what do you mean that she died in Conanā€™s arms, as he casts a scathing look out onto the Mountain of Power, vengeance and rage so clearly evident in his gaze
do you see the way he looks back to her? when they lay on her on the pyre? sheā€™s dressed in silver and with her blades and they fought side by side and he looks over to her body for just a moment, scared and lost
he canā€™t cry for her, so Subotai cries for him, because he knows the immense grief his friend is feeling?
the way they set her body on fire, a classic funeral pyre of course, but she told Conan to keep her warm and so her body burns in a bright dazzling display
keep me warm
ā€¦
and then heā€™s fighting, fighting for everything he lost and has yet to lose and when heā€™s almost overwhelmed and heā€™s almost lost sheā€™s there again, for only a moment
silver, shining, the sun behind her, she fought the gods to be with him, Valeria, Valkyrie
and she saves him so that he can keep fighting and her pendant is around his neck as an eternal memorial
donā€™t you want to live forever?

thinking about how Humans Are Space Orcs stories always talk about how indestructible humans are, our endurance, our ability to withstand common poisons, etc. and thats all well and good, its really fun to read, but it gets repetitive after a while because we aren't all like that.
And that got me thinking about why this trope is so common in the first place, and the conclusion I came to is actually kind of obvious if you think about it. Not everyone is allowed to go into space. This is true now, with the number of physical restrictions placed on astronauts (including height limits), but I imagine it's just as strict in some imaginary future where humans are first coming into contact with alien species. Because in that case there will definitely be military personnel alongside any possible diplomatic parties.
And I imagine that all interactions aliens have ever had up until this point have been with trained personnel. Even basic military troops conform to this standard, to some degree. So aliens meet us and they're shocked and horrified to discover that we have no obvious weaknesses, we're all either crazy smart or crazy strong (still always a little crazy, academia and war will do that to you), and not only that but we like, literally all the same height so there's no way to tell any of us apart.
And Humans Are Death Worlders stories spread throughout the galaxy. Years or decades or centuries of interspecies suspicion and hostilities preventing any alien from setting foot/claw/limb/appendage/etc. on Earth until slowly more beings are allowed to come through. And not just diplomats who keep to government buildings, but tourists. Exchange students. Temporary visitors granted permission to go wherever they please, so they go out in search of 'real terran culture' and what do they find?
Humans with innate heart defects that prevent them from drinking caffeine. Humans with chronic pain and chronic fatigue who lack the boundless endurance humans are supposedly famous for. Humans too tall or too short or too fat to be allowed into space. Humans who are so scared of the world they need to take pills just to function. Humans with IBS who can't stand spicy foods, capsaicin really is poison to them. Lactose intolerance and celiac disease, my god all the autoimmune disorders out there, humans who struggle to function because their own bodies fight them. Humans who bruise easily and take too long to heal. Humans who sustained one too many concussions and now struggle to talk and read and write. Humans who've had strokes. Humans who were born unable to talk or hear or speak, and humans who through some accident lost that ability later.
Aliens visit Earth, and do you know what they find? Humanity, in all its wholeness.

sometimes I think they put some sort of...aural drug in mediocre movies. If I played all these thoroughly middling movies in reverse, would I hear a satanic message telling me, YOU WILL BE TEMPTED BEYOND ALL REASON TO WRITE FANFIC ABOUT---YES, THE MOVIE YOU HALF-WATCHED WHILE COOKING AND ANSWERING EMAILS. YES. YES, I---YES, I'M SERIOUS. YES, THIS MOVIE. THE CHARACTERIZATION OR LACK THEREOF MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. UH HUH. MHM. YEP. LOOK, I DON'T MAKE THE RULES, I JUST WORK HERE OKAY?

personally I think the best thing that the joker sequel did for me was expose the exact degree to which how much of internet/public criticism is not based on genuine analysis of the content using social and cultural resources to support an actual argument but is actually adult children whining because someone took their batman toys and put them up on a high shelf for once and they, as a consumer, feel like they're entitled to throw a tantrum about it
#one of those 'if everyone's a critic no one will be' kind of situations#like every day I have to see 30 youtube thumbnails saying 'joker 2 bad' and then they say 'this scene was bad' and the only evidence they#give for their reasoning on it is 'it didn't make sense' and I want to turn into my english teacher and give reading comprehension question#like. if something doesn't make sense then why not examine the deeper reasoning that led you to that conclusion? why not then also entertai#the circumstances in which the situation would be plausible? you know? find some actual answers? but that is too much to ask of people#truly the gulf between a really well educated opinion analyzing the actual content rather than knee-jerking and saying 'I don't like it' is#far and fucking wide. I literally have only found ONE video essay that actually does a decent job talking about theme and the cohesion#between the two movies about the gulf between reality and fantasy which I thought was REALLY a good and thoughtful take on it all#but the rest of them are just like 'OOOOH MOVIE BAD MOVIE SO BAD'#like. you can't just say that!!! I know it's the internet and it's edged your ego enough to make you think you can#but some of us would like you to unpack your actual reasoning. but you do not have the capacity for that. clearly#go back to ninth grade for god's sake like this is a really basic skill for actually analyzing narrative and film and you do not have it#joker#folie a deux#joker 2#arthur fleck

the moment when you realize an ai would've written a better larry show than mike waldron bc an ai would've been trained on previous loki content and thus, unlike mike, would've actually watched the films

im like a huge horror fan in theory but not in practice. too scared and overstimulated to consume it but more than capable of spending several hours obsessively reading in depth analysis of one niche scene in a horror movie ive never even watched

see the thing that gets me about the human centipede is that you're either a normie going to watch a movie and getting scared over nothing of you're a freak whos going like WHAT'S ALL THIS THEN?! and like both can backfire bc i cannot stress enough The Human Centipede is such a stupidly tame movie there's barely any blood at all but thing is what makes me be SO insane about it it's that Heiter's actor May He Rest In Peace just put his WHOLE PUSSY into playing him making it such a fucking enjoyable and hilarious movie.
Like you cannot go watch the human centipede first sequence expecting to be scared bc you'll get bored in the first 40 minutes of doomed yuri but you gotta embrace the sheer campiness of it. Nobody cares about the campiness bro. He makes chicken sounds. He makes horrible silly chicken noises. Are you listening to me.

Finally watched Kung Fu Panda 4, tell me why it unironically changed my life
#I've never seen four movies work so well together#po's DADS#subliminal messaging about generational trauma but it's okay because it's a positive message#yes so interesting how po actually does have a lot in common with his enemies but he always chooses peace and understanding#crazy how some empathy goes a long way#the chameleon fr built her own empire so she could have stairs that were a good proportion for her size like#notice how the rabbits are treated in the movie and it will all make sense#except for those creepy ass happy tree friends bunnies what was up with that#they were hilarious though don't get me wrong#TAI LUNG'S CHARACTER ARC#i luv tai lung sm#i thought they were only going to have the shapeshifted version of him in the movie and it would be a cop out but omg i was mistaken#he actually came back and took accountability and actually complimented po and understood what it actually means to be a dragon warrior#then when he took the chameleon into the spirit realm he was doing what was done to him because he understood the chameleon but also po#also all of zhen's parallels to po it was so cool to see how someone who was not as soft and open minded could also be the dragon warrior#WTF MR BEAST WAS IN THIS MOVIE#But he played the panda pig that was being assessed on being a potential dragon warrior#aka blantantly impersonating someone who's seen as a good person for clout#also idk if the character being a pig has anything to do with it maybe a subtle gesture but obviously there are lots of pig villagers#i dont like mr beast and idk i just feel like there's a deeper reason why he's listed in the cast when he maybe had one line#did he pay to be in this movie...did he like know what the character would be#am i looking too much into it help#also also since you've read this far okay hear me out bryan cranston was in this movie right#hes also walter white#so he has huge range as an actor in that sense#you know who else has range#joaquin phoenix#he played joker and kenai in brother bear#YEAH BROTHER BEAR IKR#but like...brother bear. breaking bad! idk i just feel like there's a connection there why so many b's and why am i obsessing over this help

hello upper middle class northern usamerican tumblr user. i want to play a game. you will notice that you are in a super america convenience store in rural kentucky - you have three minutes to purchase a snack and drink of your choice and make normal small talk with the cashier. however, if you use the word "cryptid" or generally make reference to appalachia and its inhabitants as "wild", uncivilized, or lacking restraint around alcoholic beverages during your time here, i will personally tie you to the chassis of a four wheeler and tip it into the river. live or die. make your choice
#speak friend and enter#i can appreciate mothman as much as the next guy but can we stop treating appalachia like it's the subject of a richard attenborough doc#i come from a long line of hillbillies and i like to think i've got a good sense of humor about it but sometimes i am tested#like. this is not a lawless land with a moonshine still in every holler and nameless voices in the woods!! this is a normal town!!#idk maybe i'm reading too much into it but i'm just tired of the cultural fetishization of appalachia by people who aren't from here#and who don't know anything about it. like yeah you know mothman and what hooch is and that's all well and good#but do you know what the opioid epidemic really is. do you know about the structural injustices that keep people like mcconnell in power#i'm not saying you have to apply dialectical political analysis to every issue that occurs in the region to be able to have an opinion#but also like. i'm tired of people looking at places like where i grew up and making them into things they aren't#like. on the one hand we have ''ooh spooky hills!! run if you hear the trees whisper your name''#and on the other we've got ''isn't appalachia so depressing...so hashtag ethel cain core...shame it's got no value beyond aesthetics''#and on yet another hand we have ''i - a person with no ties to the region - am going to take up the cause of every social issue#occurring across the entire appalachian region so the world will see just how bad these poor hill people have it. i am very smart''#and like. it's frustrating#i'm not saying you should never speak about appalachia if something we have is interesting to you#nor am i implying that i want to gatekeep discussion of the region's issues to the community bc that won't accomplish anything#i'm just saying that like any place it's complex. it's got its good things and it's got its bad things.#and you shouldn't isolate the good from the bad or vice versa - especially if you don't know the context in which those things happen.#and for the love of god dont let your own ignorance cause you to boil down those issues into a reductive and inaccurate set of stereotypes#learn about us from us. not from tiktok not from movies and for christ's sake not from hillbilly elegy. i hate that fucking book#anyway that got weirdly serious but i mean it. putting appalachia as a talking point up on the shelf until y'all can speak intelligently#ok to rb

that one post thats going around thats like ā€œWhat hobbies do you have that ARENT related to media consumption!ā€ and everyoneā€™s replies are like ā€œi love writing and creating art!ā€ because those things are completely separated from the media you consume im sure. it just so happens that youve had the most original idea ever that wasnt influenced by the media you consume at all in the slightest. god whispered the idea into your ear in a dream
