It all starts with a smoke alarm
This wasn't supposed to happen like that, of course. It was supposed to happen with an ”allow me to introduce myself”, at the least. But hey, I am playing the cards I've been dealt, and since an anonymous ask on Tumblr does not allow pictures or links, this will have to do. We'll have plenty of time later.
Yesterday, I said that reading that Single Report reaped benefits. I have screen capped and summed up all the things that made me rise an eyebrow, to make things easier. Hopefully, this is going to be short: who would wax lyrical about a septic tank, after all?
I did not use my superpowers to do this, but simply the link provided by a very active Anon on several shipper blogs, in order to properly stir shite, I presume: https://corumproperty.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/HomeReport-31.pdf
Armed with my wits and a virtual highlighter, I started to carefully read the whole document. Ownership details aside - this, I discussed yesterday -, I remind you that it should give any prospective buyer a good, detailed idea of the available fittings and current condition of the house put on sale.
In Europe and elsewhere, I guess, inspections of this type are rather a dull and thorough affair. And these people did an excellent job: they checked every single nook & cranny, used binoculars to have a closer look at the roof tiles and listed it all on these papers a good researcher should read, before dropping to conclusions.
This is how we know, for example, that the inspection happened on a rainy day:
Tumblr media
.. and that the guttering was overflowing. Does that sound like a well loved, lived-in house to you?
Thought so.
Tumblr media
This brought a smile. And the image of a Christmas tree left near a London dustbin in June. Home, sweet home?
Like all properties, this also comes with burglar and fire alarm systems. However, apparently not much has been done, in this respect. Or at least, not recently. Not since February 2022, to be accurate: otherwise, they would have been upgraded. Yet, no such thing: it's up to the buyer to do and pay for the upgrade.
Tumblr media
Lived-in? Certainly not after February 2022 and probably even earlier, would be my best guess. But lived-in at some point in time, most certainly.
You see, since I was on the real estate agent's webpage, I also took the virtual tour of the house. It is available to everyone, here: https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=AFKibrk8QiD
Now, I don't know about you, but when I visit somebody's house for the first time, I always check the bookshelves: yes, I am a shameless nerd. I am also well aware that the rest of the furniture was staged, it looked that sad, clinical way it does all over the world. Did not expect to find any books in there, to be honest. And yet, there they were.
I didn't bother with the fashion coffee table books, although I thought they were a nice nod to Ms. B's past, and totally the kind of things she might have on her credenza.
A built-in bookshelf in the basement caught my eye. That did not look staged. It looked as she might have left some of her own books in there, like an afterthought, if you want. And people's choices of books are always speaking volumes to me, about who they really are.
It did not disappoint.
More fash-un. And yeah, Tiffany & Co! I knew it!
Tumblr media
A Tina Turner bio or memoir. Awww:
Tumblr media
Bette Davis and some feminist literature. Her books, I am pretty sure of that:
Tumblr media
And, to save the best for last, lo and behold, what do we have here?
Tumblr media
Bear Grylls?
That Bear Grylls?
Hahahaha. Of course. I have all the reasons in the world to believe the music producer/PA/whatever is into masculine thrillers written by a world-renowned survivalist, haven't I?
Not a chance in hell, to be honest. I grinned like the Cheshire cat because, ladies, we do know WHOSE book is this, don't we?
Judging by its jacket, well-read. Not a prop.
Belonging to someone with a dry, wicked sense of humor who apparently also left this gem:
Tumblr media
A Captain's Duty. At this point in time, I wasn't grinning anymore. I was laughing like an idiot, of course.
Slàinte mhath, ladies. We'll have time for a proper introduction later.

Sorry for the spam likes today. Favorite jazz album?? I saw a post on your blog that mentioned Mingus ah um. That’s either my fave or Birth of Cool (Miles Davis does do my favorite version of On Green Dolphin Street). Though both are kinda basic choices I want to expand my listening.
so i'm gonna give you a few albums (and album-adjacent things) with the caveat that i haven't heard most of what's out there ^_^ i'm just a casual fan
ornette coleman - the shape of jazz to come
this album is on another level. the multiple layers of brass crisscross each other, playing dissonant chaos, then they rip into solos that could melt charlie parker's fingers. the bass shreds and stumbles up and down some wild assortment of scales. the drums patter out a frantic rhythm that somehow ties everything together.
it shouldn't make sense, but it feels so alive. you'll catch quotes from flight of the bumblebee over rainy oceans of rhythm. herds of wild animals shuffle back and forth in a forest painted by jackson pollock. and then whoever's not soloing yells "woo! alright!"
it's not even my favorite ornette coleman recording. that honor goes to this youtube upload of a live show in germany, 1978. the bass intro, instantly picked up by the drummer, is so electric. the haunting melodies, borrowed from the rite of spring, are traded from sax to guitar. the whole band feels like they're operating on instinct. this is what a basquiat painting SOUNDS like. like a genius artist drawing with their non-dominant hand. LITERALLY coleman plays a violin left-handed at one point. it's incredible.
john coltrane - my favorite things
trane puts so much panache into this simple little pop song. the opening chords are heavy with drama. the groove is insanely tight. every time he plays the melody, it's got a new rhythm, to the point where he seems to be playing a game with the listener. "how many ways can i get you to feel this groove?" the song is melted, bent, and stretched like molten glass, in a 13 minute display of total virtuosity
and that's just track 1!!!! this album is timeless. every second is as fresh and vibrant as it was in 1961
herbie hancock - headhunters
herbie has always been at the cutting edge of jazz fusion. this is his definitive statement on funk
this album is intensely rhythmic, laying out catchy melodies over funk foundations. the whole band seems to just be having a blast. the grooves are often busy and hypermelodic, with no room to breathe as everyone jams at once. it's like an all-night house party in a bouncy castle full of confetti
if you're a fan of japanese jazz like caseopia, or jazz-influenced video game music, this album will feel shockingly familiar to you. its wildly creative synth work, uplifting and colorful chords, and eclectic sound palette are all DECADES ahead of their time.
where would we be without herbie? i'd wager the entire global music landscape would be different. from hip hop to big beat to drum n bass, we all stand on the shoulders of giants. hancock is a titan. the giants that raise us up are standing on his shoulders

Requested: Palomino Club, February 19, 1987.
“I’ll tell you what happened there. I’d gone to America and Bob [Dylan] rang me and said, you know, did I want to come out for an evening and see Taj Mahal who was playing at The Palomino? So we went there and had a few of these Mexican beers, and had a few more. And Jesse Ed Davis, who played guitar on Watching The River Flow, is in the audience, and Bob says, Hey, why don’t we all get up and play — we’ve had a few beers, right — and you can sing! So we get up there and I’m in the spotlight and Bob’s hanging back in the shadows and I start singing: What’s the matter with me? I don’t have much to say… and every time I get near the microphone, Dylan comes running up and just starts singing this *rubbish* in my ear, trying to throw me off. But it was really funny because when I got pushed on stage at Wembley [with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Dylan, as posted about here] and sang a bit of Rainy Day Women I couldn’t remember the words and just made up this stuff. And Bob came up to me afterwards, backstage, and said, So you got even with me! But it was nice to recapture the feeling of what it was like on stage to make sure I could go back into that situation in the future.” - George Harrison, Q, 1988

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PAUL WILLIAMS. In addition to his amazing run as an actor and singer-songwriter, he wrote or co-wrote (with Biff Rose and Roger Nichols) songs covered by David Bowie, The Carpenters (“Rainy Days & Mondays,” “We’ve Only Just Begun”), Jack Jones, The Muppets, Helen Reddy, 3 Dog Night (“Old Fashioned Love Song”—also covered by Micky Dolenz), and Dionne Warwick—not to mention award-winning film and TV scores. He’s been Chairman and President of ASCAP since 2009 and is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In recent years he’s had a resurgence, working with Richard Barone, Daft Punk, and The Scissor Sisters. Somewhere he’s found time to take up skydiving and become a UCLA certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, co-authoring the book GRATITUDE & TRUST: RECOVERY IS NOT JUST FOR ADDICTS.
Paul wrote the confessional “Someday Man” as a single for The Monkees. Upon release in 1968, it under-performed and got lost as a “deep cut” + Paul’s own version didn’t do much better. However, as cream rises to the top, in time the sophisticated and art-y song grew in popularity, in part because Davy Jones revived it for his solo set in 2009. Now it’s considered to be a Jones/Monkees evergreen and (speaking as a former band member) it was one of our favorites to play. Here’s the song from the 2011 tour Davy did w/The Monkees. Meanwhile, HB PW and thank you for your many musical gems.

It was a rainy Monday night when she came up to my office. I saw her silhouette on my frosted pebbled glass door and I knew this was going to be trouble.
They don't make frosted pebbled glass doors like they used to. I had to source this one specially. I cut the door to fit it in myself. The landlord didn't like that but he doesn't understand aesthetics. Same reason I keep my blinds half-open all the time for those angular and linear shadows: aesthetics.
I put the decals for my name up on the door too: Harry Cross, Researcher. The letters were backwards for me on account of being inside my office: ɿɘʜɔɿɒɘƨɘЯ ƨƨoɿƆ γɿɿɒH
Then the letters were ||||| ||||| ||||||| when she opened the door.
"Hello, Hodie," she said.
"Hodie" is what they call me if they know me: Harry "Hodie" Cross. It was a long-ago yesterday that I got that nickname. I'll tell you why tomorrow.
"Hey, kid," I said.
You could call her a leggy blonde. Blondes come in only a couple of flavors in these kinds of stories: icy and honey. But she wasn't a blonde. She was pretty leggy, though, considering she had two of them. She'd be leggier if she had more but you take what you can get. So you could call her a leggy blonde if you wanted but I'm not about to. She was maybe somewhere between 17 and 43 and she looked like she had a lot on her mind. I'm telling you all this for your benefit; she's my cousin so don't get any ideas.
She took my hat off the rack and put it on as she walked over on those two legs; the hat looked better on her than on me.
"How're your brothers?" I asked.
"Fighting," she said as she sat down on the other side of my desk.
"Too bad," I said.
She shrugged. "It happens every night."
This kid here, Issy, she's got two brothers, Shem and Shaun and they've each got a share of the city. Shem's got a lock on the stationery business in this town and Shaun's got a mail delivery racket going. It never ends with those two and sometimes I think Issy just plays referee when they're brawling.
I kicked my feet up on the desk. "So what brings a girl like you to a nice place like this? The rain? The park? Other things?"
"I need you to find someone for me, Hodie."
"Yeah?" I lit another datura cigarette. I couldn't find the one I'd just had in my hand. "Who?" I lost my cigarette again.
"Ellmann."
I gave her a look. Two-ells-two-enns Dicky Davy Ellmann was another big man in this town, but for the right reasons. He was smart; he knew his stuff, and if he didn't know, he knew how to find out. A regular tome, that guy.
I found another datura cigarette in my hand and lit it. "With that blue and black jacket of his, he should be easy to find." I paused for a second. "You don't think he's…I guess some people would call it 'recycled'?"
"I don't think he's in the box."
We all know the old cardboard box where you end up when it's time to leave the city of letters.
"Still in the old place, then, huh? Why're you looking for him?"
"Because of this."
She slid a Tumblr post across the desk towards me:
Tumblr media
I read it and gave a low whistle.
"I need to know if it's true, Hodie. And if anyone's going to know, it's Ellmann and nobody knows where he is."
I leaned back in my chair, which I also had to source specially as a vintage piece since the aesthetics demand something other than a pink gamer chair in this establishment, and kept looking at the post.
"Why not just ask the usual crowd?"
"With Artie out there causing trouble?"
She was right: Artie Intel was a thorn in everyone's side these days. He liked to talk but only about three words of what he said were true. It was all good language but it was all wrong--not even fiction, just plain wrong. Real gift o' the gab with this one. And a town like this might run on fiction but sometimes you just need facts. The problem was that people were starting to listen to old Artie and starting think what he was saying was making sense.
"Hodie, please?" she said. "You've got a nose like a bloodhound."
"It's not that big."
"You got droopy eyes, though."
She had me there.
"And droopy ears."
That was maybe going too far.
"All right," I said. "I'll take the case."
"I knew you would, Hodie. And I know you'll find him."
I tossed the post back onto the desk. "When I set out to find somebody I find 'em. That's why they pay me."

🎈🍒🎒 for anyone of your choice <3
WAHOO thank u! i'll answer each question for a different person in this trio :3
Tumblr media
ares lang, theo davies and gabriel o'connor
🎈 - What does your character do at parties? Are they a wallflower or a party animal? Do they go with friends or alone?
⋆✴︎˚。⋆ Gabriel loves a good party. He enjoys the social aspect of it all. He'll always bring along a friend. The usual spot is a LGBT bar called Cherry. If he sees someone attractive, he'll almost always flirt with them. Ares would honestly get so stressed out when they were much younger because he'd be left alone at that bar many times by Gum and Gabriel pFFT!
🍒 - Does your character have a best friend? How long have they known each other? What do they like most about each other? How did they meet?
⋆✴︎˚。⋆ Ares cherishes a lot of his friendships and to pick a single best friend would be so difficult for him. His oldest friend would have to be Syx, they've known each other since elementary school. Then came Icarus, the two met in one of their classes. Icarus integrated into the group once he broke ties with his old group of friends. Meanwhile, Ares met Gum and Gabriel at the record shop. For Syx, he loves her honesty, she'll tell you like it is. For Icarus, he admires his loyalty. For Gabriel, their banter, the two flow really easily together. As for Gum, he kinda views her as the sister he wishes he had. Gum does look up to him as well, especially his ability to encourage the people around him!
🎒 - What items does your oc usually carry? Do they have a bag or just keep everything in their pockets? Do they carry a lot or a little?
⋆✴︎˚。⋆ Theo's bag holds many little trinkets. Things that you think you won't need but on some random rainy day, Theo will whip out an umbrella. It's more because their days are typically away from home so they want to make sure they have everything. They're usually seen with a backpack or tote bag as well as their reusable water bottle!

Books Tag Game!
Tagged by @dragonnarrative-writes.
Point of order: I'm a picky bitch. The amount of books I've read vs the books I'd actually put on a bookshelf are like.... maybe 20, taking into account most of them are part of a series. Tho tbf most of the 'good books' I want aren't on KU and I'm kinda fucking broke. Also yes, the early days of booktok got me back into reading after a 10+ year slump in case that wasn't about to become insanely obvious.
1) The last book I read:
Fake It Till You Make It by Flora Quincy. Been on the hunt for more omegaverse books, but this one was terrible >< DNF'd.
2) A book I recommend:
I don't know how not to sound like a basic bitch broken record, but for the love of god go read A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. Just stop after book three in the series.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout. Binged the first three books (that were out) in two days. Wish I could afford the rest.
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
Hi. Basic bitch again :) A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. You have no idea what this book meant to me the first time I read it and the strength it gave me to open my eyes and see that I was worth so much more.
5) A book on my TBR:
Currently there are about 28 of varying excitement to read (most of it is what I refer to as 'junk food'), but I've got an upcoming release in September for the fourth book in the Beasts of the Briar series by Elizabeth Helen called Broken By Daylight I'm looking forward to.
6) A book I’ve put down:
Exodus by Kate Stewart. I was prepared to put this series as one of my all time favorites with the way I felt falling in love with Sean and Dom, but after that... refused to read more. Genuinely devastated, still not over it. Haven't looked at rainy days the same ever since.
Also just because it still bothers me - House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J Maas. What the fuck girl?! The first one was so good and I praise so much of your work! But it's like ever since ACOTAR book 4 came out you've just dropped the ball...
7) A book on my wish list:
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Hopefully it's better than some of the other dragon books I've tried recently.
8) A favorite book from childhood:
The Sight by David Clement-Davies. It's a fantasy book that follows a pack of wolves and their daughter who has visions. Have tissues on hand.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
Depends on the friend >>; We talking a cute hockey romance like Weak Side by SJ Sylvis... or is the freak flag flying with Shantel Tessier's The Sinner?
10) A fiction book you own:
Death: A Life by George Pendle. Not my usual fare, but it's a fun 'autobiography' about the grim reaper.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Does a high school yearbook count?
12) What are you currently reading:
Just cracked open Baby + the Late Night Howlers by Kathryn Moon, but I'm expecting to probably close it within the first few pages (seriously, my kingdom for a good omegaverse that I haven't already read 😭).
13) What are you planning on reading next?
God, idk. Most of the books on my list either cost money, aren't out yet, or are titles I know are most likely gonna be mid at best.
No pressure tags: @cosmicpro, @void-my-warranty, @all-purpose-dish-soap, @stuffireadandenjoy, and @rememberwren

THE BEST WRITTEN SONGS OF ALL-TIME
Because I have zero innate musical ability, the idea that someone can sit down with a musical instrument, and create an original song out of thin air is magic to me. Songwriting is a craft, but it’s inspiration that makes a good song into a great one. There are songwriters who seem able to turn out high quality songs in perpetuity. There are others who write maybe one or two great songs, and are never heard from again. So, I made a list of what I think are the 50 best written songs I’ve ever heard. These are in no particular order. I’ve listed the title followed by the songwriter or songwriters, and in parentheses is the performer I most enjoy hearing do the song – although most of these songs have been recorded countless times by a variety of artists. You can probably find all of these on YouTube or any of the streaming services. Most have lyrics, but some do not. But, it’s hard for me to imagine any of these songs being recorded by anyone with talent, and not retaining the brilliance with which the song was written.
Claire de Lune by Claude Debussy (Eugene Ormandy & The Philadelphia Orchestra)
Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin (Zubin Mehta & The New York Philharmonic, Gary Graffman, piano)
A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke (Sam Cooke)
