Dream Syndicate -- Demo Recordings, 12/27/81
Tumblr media
Here's a cool thing I stumbled onto, like a couple years ago, then stumbled on again recently.
Steve Wynn -- singer/leader f one of my favorite bands, the Dream Syndicate -- posted this great sounding demo from the band's first rehearsal with forever drummer Dennis Duck. And you can hear from this demo that he fit like a glove from the get-go.
Below is Wynn's explanation of the demo from the band's 12/26/21 Facebook post, on the then-occasion of the band's 40th birthday, below; and below that, the demo! Check it all out!
--------------------------------------
December 27, 1981…….a memory from a Sunday evening, 40 years ago.
Karl Precoda and I had been meeting regularly and jamming in my father’s basement in West LA over the course of the previous months, having met when he showed up to try out on bass for a band I was goofing around with at the time. “I don’t like this band very much but you’re really good—we should get together and play again sometime.”
There was an immediate chemistry between the two of us and, most of all, we were just having fun jamming on one chord for hours or playing loose versions of CCR covers or fooling around with some new songs I had been writing. I called up Kendra Smith, my best friend at the time and band mate from when we had both attending UC Davis in the years before. Like me, she had moved back to LA and had just recently started playing bass. I knew she’d dig what we were laying down and she enthusiastically joined our aimless duo and before long we found a drummer named Randy who I believe I met at the Rhino Records store where I was working at the time. Randy was game and enthusiastic but as much as an inspired but limited amateur as me and Kendra and Karl which was just fine since we had no ambition beyond making noise in the basement.
One day Kendra said, “I was talking to Dennis Duck at a party in Pasadena and he said he might like to play with us sometime.” Now, you have to understand that Dennis was a rock star as far as we were concerned. He was 6 years older than the rest of us and had already made a mark on the LA post punk scene, drumming with his band Human Hands. They’d put out records! They’d been played on the radio! I had seen them play live several times including a great show at the Whiskey a Go Go where they opened for the Feelies and the nervous energy of both bands coupled with a 103 degree fever I was battling from the flu to make for one of the most memorable shows I’ve seen to this day (and interestingly enough, the topic of conversation with me and Dennis and the Feelies’ Glenn Mercer at a show we played together just a few weeks ago in NYC at City Winery).
Anyway, I was a little incredulous that Dennis would want to play with us. But I was also pretty cocky and full of beans about our cool little raggedy combo and on Sunday, December 27, I called him up on a torrentially rainy afternoon (it DOES rain in Southern California sometimes) and said, “Hey, we’re getting together to jam in my dad’s basement tonight. Wanna come over?” Dennis lived an hour away in Pasadena, it was pouring and he would have to load up his own drums to make the trek but somehow I was doggedly persistent enough to convince him to come out. I guess I made a good case or maybe just wouldn’t shut up until he said yes. To this day, he’s surprised he agreed.
Anyway, Dennis arrived, drums dripping from the rain outside, set up and started playing with us in the basement . He had brought along a boom box to record the rehearsal. We didn’t try to impress him or even say much about what we were doing. We just did our thing and he played along. At the end, he packed up and I helped him to his car. “Thanks for coming out and playing with us,” I said—I am nothing if not polite—and he didn’t say all that much in return. I figured he was probably wondering why he bothered to come out and play with kids like us and pretty much assumed we wouldn’t be hearing from him again.
A few days later I called Dennis to thank him for coming out and asked him if he had listened to the cassette he had recorded of the rehearsal. He answered, “I’ve listened to nothing ELSE since then. It’s one of the best things I’ve heard in a long time. I want to play with you guys.” And that was that. Three weeks later we made a quick four-song demo that became our first EP and only a few days after that we played our first show, opening for PIL spin-off band Brian Brain at Club Lingerie in Hollywood and we were off and running, only a handful of days after the first time we played together.

40 years ago. Hard to believe. Since then, Dennis and I have held the fort, first with Karl and Kendra and then, over the following years in the 80’s, with Dave Provost and Paul B. Cutler and Mark Walton and now for the last 10 years with the consistent lineup of me, Dennis, Mark, Jason Victor and Chris Cacavas. Our new album comes out next June with the first single being released in March. With any luck we’ll be out there on road for much of the latter part of the year.
But for now, happy 40th Birthday to the Dream Syndicate. Like many good and incendiary things, it all started in the basement.
Here’s a link to that first rehearsal, copied directly from Dennis’ cassette that he still has all these years later.

ive been sort of obsessed with medieval hermits for the past couple years. the 3 discrete written projects for school weren't enough so now i have made a song
lyrics:
It shouldn’t be so hard to turn from the river,
I’m looking for an answer in humility:
The god within the heart within the sand
In rubbled mausoleums from the mountain to the sky,
Pillars tripped and walls devoured by the fevered earth
And dragged into obscurity....
I’m following the hermit saint who walks from ruin to ruin (x3)
I’m following the hermit saint!
It shouldn’t be so hard to trust what you deliver,
I’m looking for a quiet place to go––
For solace in forsaken Holocene.
Do you ever miss the talking hands, the laughing bells, or is
This the chosen life of holy people for a reason?
Just waiting for the halo...
I’m following the hermit saint who walks from ruin to ruin (x3)
I’m following the hermit saint!
It shouldn’t be so hard to reform a sinner,
I’ve never met a stone I didn’t worship,
Or devil that I didn’t try to know.
But must I carry forth as proof of my fealty
This violence and temptation on my shoulders?
Reaching for the fruit and being spurned.
Martyrs have it easy, all they have to do is burn—
Was the starving and the solitude not test enough already?
Even monastics aren’t so removed.
Am I forgiven? Will it be worth it? Can I go home?
I’m following the hermit saint who walks from ruin to ruin (x3)
I’m following the hermit saint
I’m following the hermit saint who walks from ruin to ruin (x3)
I’m following the hermit saint

i am going insane. how can i not go insane? every single time someone streams take me to church, they are hearing the original demo vocals from hozier’s parents’ attic. they are hearing the earliest, rawest form of his work. it’s not a professionally done job by a seasoned musician. take me to church is very much backed by a young man just entering his twenties who dropped out of university to pursue his dream. who recorded the track, fresh out of a breakup, in an attic. like, i see concert recordings on my instagram feed every day, there are reddit users with whole sleeves of tattoos inspired by his lyrics, and when i’m lucky enough, too sweet will be playing at a cafe i’m studying at. it’s just crazy that the guy we hear when we listen to take me to church will be on the receiving end of a whole grammy nomination just a couple years later. that he would perform on snl, at a victoria’s secret fashion show, release two more albums. i mean !!! take me to church, one of the top thirty most streamed songs on spotify? yeah, it was sung by hozier, but more importantly, by andrew.

Abt ur nonbinary ppl post; I personally think that pyro fhcks and people need to stop being cowards
i’m glad we’ve socially accepted that pyro tf2 is non-binary like. universally. pyro being non-binary is truly one of those things where i think even the most centrist tf2 gamer boys would take that on the chin and hardly blink. but i’m NOT happy that people then went on to say that pyro cannot fuck. you people will adapt scout teamfortress into an uwu scared of other men’s dicks “be careful it’s my first time” boy or sniper teamfortress into an around the clock sadist who does kink negotiation on the first date but won’t let pyro teamfortress have normal ass sex as a non-binary person? i know why. and it’s frustrating.

Okay so I was thinking someone should do something adjacent to this band au by @emilywaters but with Rembrandt as the lighting director but i fear that i may be the only person capable of this considering you know. Thats actually my job. But i have too many wips so you're getting this au in post form. Everything I changed from the original post is due to me writing out this entire post before I successfully tracked it down so like it's not me disagreeing I simply forgor.
I'm not sure what like level of fame they were supposed to be in the original but i need them to be doing stadium shows purely for Rembrandt's sake okay she deserves it theyre touring with an ma3 just believe me.
I think Cleon was originally their lead singer but she had to step down for. Reasons. Idk. So the Warriors are hard up bc their producer is on their ass about getting demos recorded for their next album but none of them really feel good about replacing Cleon.
Mercy is a mistreated burnt out pop idol who's just kind of getting listless at this point because she's basically just a prop for a brand and she can't even give a fuck about her music anymore. She meets Swan at a party and they hit it off and get blackout drunk and Swan wakes up the next day with a recording on her phone of Mercy doing a demo of one of the songs she wrote. She takes it in to their producer like here fine theres a demo are you happy and shes like??? Hello???? This is incredible??? Who is this singer??? And Swan is like hahaha. About that.
The producer reaches out to Mercy's management and theyre like um absolutely not she does not want to join your band she's a solo act but then Mercy gets Swan's number somehow and is like i DO wanna join your band actually but im stuck in this goddamned contract. So then its about them getting their record label to go up against Mercy's and get her out of her contract so she can be their new lead singer.
And also more importantly (to me) is the subplot about the like relatively young and inexperienced lighting girl from their home venue who Cleon insisted on hiring for their first tour and who just kind of stuck around and became part of the group. They tour with a disproportionately nice rig bc Rembrandt is a fucking nerd and none of them can resist her puppy dog eyes about getting shiny new toys. And like yeah she's kind of quiet and doesn't talk much in a group but she can hold her own against the fucking overhires giving her shit at whatever venue and not taking her seriously and she gets stars in her eyes when Ajax asks her about programming so like needless to say Ajax is a little bit obsessed with her. Rembrandt's job is half ordering around men twice her size and age and half real-time computer programming live in front of an audience. Ajax never stood a chance. There are always fans trying to see Ajax after the show and Ajax is always in the booth while Rembrandt talks about the latest patch grand ma pushed out and how she hates everything about it and everyone at that company is trying to ruin her life (she will have adapted and forgotten about this in two days until the next patch which alters her workflow .00001% upon which time she will again believe her career is over and she needs to call them to revert the console)
I think probably their relationship is more of a flashback moment bc obviously The Warriors can't be touring while they're looking for a new singer but I think when they're not on tour Rembrandt lives in Portland and does like weird indie performance art shit and Ajax stays in LA with Swan and the others and the long distance is kind of killing them. Could Ajax stay with Rembrandt in Portland for a few months and fly back down when they're actually recording stuff? Absolutely. Does this idea terrify her existentially for reasons she can neither articulate nor overcome? Also absolutely. But on a more fun note Rembrandt drags Ajax to USITT with her every year which is actually kind of fun for Ajax because in addition to Rembrandt being so excited nobody there is impressed at all by her being famous but they ARE impressed that she knows how DMX works. So. Who's laughing now Swan. The flashcards worked.

Chat ok so I was involved with a musical theatre group on my campus where we put on little revue style shows of different musicals of our choosing blahblahblah. I just graduated last month but I plan on continuing to get my masters at the same college, but so this one semester I’m off. BUT I still am ghost-directing a number with some other ppl and so there was a meeting last night where people put those numbers up for the next show. I was invited to be there just bc I’m around but bc I’m not an active member I don’t have any say in anything.
Im notorious for picking stuff from musicals no one has ever fucking heard of (bc I live in the states) mainly from European musicals, it’s like my whole shtick. Well imagine the room when one of my codirectors said they were doing something from a show called “Istvan the King” (very warbly and unconfidently spoken) ((also fuck the anglicized name Stephen that’s so lame)) and the entire room slowly turn their heads to the back of the room where I was like covertly sitting.
Never have I felt so seen /NEG, SCARY, that was horrible.
