⤷ female, ambiguous race, and any size reader. Requests are open, thank you for reading!
Warnings: swearing, mentions of violence, death, a wholesome father figure (rare!!!), piracy, anti-hero activity... ughh oh blood, sacrifice, maybe even blood sacrifice :), I have a nsfw section as well
a/n: Thank you to the anon who requested this! I’ve been wanting to write for Tia Dalma for so long but didn’t know where to start honestly (she’s one of my favourite characters and I didn’t want to do her any injustices!)

𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈:
Me and the Devil by Soap&Skin
𝑺𝑭𝑾🌿
・You’ve always been curious
・And unlike Elizabeth, who you practically grew up with, your curiosity spanded across many subjects - not just pirates.
・Your curiosity ranged from how carriages were made to where the best places are to plant seeds. How to bake and cook, to how to lead an army.
・There was a bit of romance between your mother and Governor Swann, as your father and Elizabeth’s mother had both died.
・So in your youth, you spent a lot of time with Elizabeth Swann, who constantly wanted to play pirates. She was always the captain, and you, the second mate
・As you grew older, the separation between classes became very apparent. Even though you and your mother were well-off, giving you a sheltered life, Elizabeth was almost ... groomed, for something better
・And you watched as your best friend was whisked into learning new languages, how to act like a lady, and so on
・Your mother re-married a man who had travelled to Port Royal to be in the Governor’s inner circle, and he was quiet with you for a while
・It took some time for you to get used to each other, but he was always curteous to you and soon you started to look at him as a father figure
・He taught you a lot of the things that you wanted to know
・Things that your mother always scoffed at
・In a way, you were the son he always wished he had
・He taught you how to handle a blade, how to shoot a pistol and the basics on how to defend yourself. Everything that soldiers were taught.
・When he had to go away for the Governor, he always brought back a momento for your mother, and for you
・Each time he brought something back, it fuelled your need for adventure, to get out into the world and experience things. Call it Rapunzel syndrome, because your mother always said the world was cruel and there was nothing out there for you
・But you had this innate need ... to discover
・And when the attack on Port Royal happened and Elizabeth was taken, you were furious. Utterly delirious with anger. How could that happen? She was the Governor’s daughter!
・Your step-father was the one to push you to go on this adventure
・So you went with Will and Jack to rescue her. You realised why Elizabeth was so obsessed with pirates. They had freedom.
・And that’s exactly what you wanted...
・So you allowed yourself to be swept up in the world of piracy
・It wasn’t until a year later, that you met Tia Dalma
・When Jack went to seek help with his mark from Davy Jones
・When you looked at her, the wind was knocked out of you. It felt like you had fallen from a ladder and landed on your back. And a second later, you actually were on the ground.
・You awoke to Jack’s face, “you alright, love?”
・As well as Gibbs fanning your face
・But it wasn’t until you saw the face of Tia Dalma that you fully came to
“I see ... my future in you.”
・And that was where it began
・You were soulmates, Tia Dalma could feel like. Just like all the other things she could feel; like with Will, she knows the destiny by just looking at someone.
・Your relationship developed quickly as Tia Dalma didn’t see the importance in ‘courting’ you, so to speak
・Her pull to you was so strong that she couldn’t be held back by courties and traditions
・She knew you were destined to be together, no matter what. That something pulled you to her for a reason
・And you could feel it too. Like being in her presence was the only thing that made sense. That even though she seemed like the most alien person on earth, she was the most normal to you.
・You decided to stay with Tia Dalma, and pursue what was going on in each of your hearts
・While doing this, Jack did task you with learning some magical abilities (”An order from your captain!) as he put it.
・To aid him in his fight against Davy Jones (which you agreed to. Somehow justifying it as the reason to stay with Tia Dalma).
・And with the time you spent with her ... you fell in love ...
・She smells like patchouli, sage and bay leaves
・Tia Dalma braids trinkets into your hair, like small shells, gemstones and/or a feather.
・You go to the beach often, and spend hours there together.
・While there, she talks about her past, where she’s come from and what she’s endured.
・She tells you about Davy Jones and her, that she’s really the goddess Calypso. That they fell in love, that he was supposed to do his duties and guide the souls of the sea to their resting place
・But she makes you swear - a blood promise, not to tell anyone.
・The story made you cry; only a single tear. However, when it slid down your cheek, Tia reached out and wiped it, licking her finger with the tear upon it
“I was right... you are connected to me...somehow.”
・In your days away from your crew, you realised how much time it had been since you last saw your mother and more notably, your stepfather.
・You asked Tia if she had any way of getting a letter to Port Royal and all she did was smirk
“Mi Heart, I can get a message to anyone...”
・She whistled and a raven flew onto her shoulder. It nibbled her outstretched finger and you smiled.
・This woman was going to change your life.

Physical Touch, Words of Affection and Acts of Service.
We know Tia is a witch with the powers of voodoo magic. She loves to touch your face, fix your hair, make sure your clothes are sitting right etc. She also loves to hear how much you love her (it’s the goddess side in her), verbal praise is a big thing for Tia Dalma. And with acts of service, that comes from how she shows her love. She does a lot of spellwork for you, to aid you in every area in your life.
𝑵𝑺𝑭𝑾 🔞minors dni!
・Tia was your first sexual encounter, and I’m talking even the first time being kissed. Well, kissed by someone you’re attracted to.
・Tia knows a lot about sex, sexual desires and pleasure
・So she knows exactly how to get you ... going
・Most of the time, all it takes is to whisper in your ear, and a nibble on your earlobe. Then you’re like putty in her hands
・With your consent, she would introduce kinks into the bedroom
・Not major ones, unless you became more and more curious
・Then she would have no issue bringing in more ... intense kinks
・Possibly blood play, but it would surprise you to know, that Tia would only do that when you know you want to bind yourself to each other.
“Blood is our lifeforce,” she said in her distinct accent, the trinkets in her locs tinkling as she walked towards you, “and when shared, it is a bond that cannot be broken.”
・She’s nearly always the one in charge; telling you what to do, how to touch her.
・Once you learn though, you start to take charge in small ways.
・And Tia Dalma starts to like it
・The way you firmly hold her against you
・The bites that are harsher than normal
・When you push her against the wall and kiss her passionately you can feel her smiling

Not to switch pirate fandoms for a sec (I know ofmd has been the focus lately as it deserves to be), but I rewatched "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" and I noticed some stuff I wanted to analyze a bit.
One of the things I love about Captain Jack Sparrow, especially in the first film, is how attached he is to "his affects."
The hat, the sword, the compass, the gun with one shot, the beads in his hair, the rings, the eyeliner, the bandana. Some of these have actual uses and are important to the plot, but so much of his look is simply for his look, and with how much value he places on them, one could find implication that they are also, in fact, part of his identity.
Like, how much of what he has, does Jack keep because he likes how it looks on him or because he found some sort of significance to it in terms of how it makes him feel?
It makes me think of queer culture, or actually most if not any cultures, because most people in general have some sort of meaning behind their looks whether the meaning comes from traditions upheld, fitting into the society around you, NOT fitting in to the society around you, showing where you come from, showing the parts of yourself that are not easy to communicate or that are simply invisible if you don't put something in your appearance to make it visible.
For so many people, our appearance is tied to our identity to a variety of depths. The reason I singled out queer culture, specifically, is partly because that's what I think of most often when it comes to how I want to present myself each day. Because of this, I know that deciding things like whether to wear binders or bras, whether to cuff your jeans, paint your nails a certain way, cut your nails, have your hair short or long, etc., while all being ways or having been ways for queer people to signal to each other that they are part of the lgbtq+ community, are also just a few examples of ways that people experiment with their looks to find what makes them feel the most like themselves. To feel like they know themselves more. To feel like they aren't hiding anymore.
But, like I said, it doesn't have to mean that looking a certain way means you are a part of any one community. There are plenty parts of my own look that I don't really have an explanation or meaning behind at all, at least not one I can put into words.
Your identity is more than just x number of things. It's more than a list of groups you're in or facts about yourself. I personally wouldn't call it a list at all. But being queer can still be such a huge part of your identity, and being able to show it is so important.
"How does this tie to pirates again?'
Ah yes, I had a point, didn't I?
I don't really know any facts about what actual pirate culture was like, so I want to make a disclaimer that here, I am mainly talking about 'pirate culture' as the sort you find in media: movies, TV series, books, social media, etc. Pirate core is a fairly popular thing and my point is centered around how I think that's greatly because in pirate stories and maybe some history, a lot of the aesthetic are things like great hats, swords, jewelry, and other things that make you feel like your most badass self.
I love that part in one of the last scenes of "Curse of the Black Pearl," where Jack compliments Will's hat. You know the big one with the feather that looks suspiciously like a pirate hat? And then, remember how Will immediately smiles about it? I know that smile so well. It's the same exact one I get whenever someone compliments something that I wore just because I liked it, and it felt right to wear it for myself.
This is such a big deal to me from a story-telling and character development angle as well because at the beginning of the film, Will hates everything to do with pirates and is deeply offended at any implication that he is or could be so much as associated with a pirate. Then, throughout the movie, he discovers he's the son of a pirate, he finds that he acts a lot like one. See the scene where he and Jack try to sneak up on Barbosa's crew and save Elizabeth and Jack tells him all the ways his actions scream "pirate." "Busted a man out of jail," "completely obsessed with treasure," etc.
To me, that sounds a lot like many an LGBTQ+ person's journey to growing and/or busting their way out of the closet. Will is discovering more about his identity.
And by the end of the movie, he wears that fabulous hat, which, yes, marks him as a pirate (which is likely the main reason Jack commented on it. I like to think it was an "I see you" moment,) but more importantly, it shows that Will has at least started embracing who he is.
Not to mention Elizabeth. She always loved anything to do with pirates. She had her home attacked by pirates, and her plan to save her home happened to include getting aboard a real-life pirate ship surrounded by real-life pirates? I know her story throughout the movies could have been so much better. I really could go on for ages about it. But despite people like her father and Norrington urging her to stay away from pirate life, and the writers passing up a lot of the opportunities she had to become more of a pirate and therefore more of herself... Despite this, she still leads crews into battle, devises plans as a Captain would, and even becomes the motherfucking Pirate King. She has always known who she was, even if her creators and many of her fellow characters tried to hide it or take it away from her.
I also have to mention the scene where Elizabeth and Jack are drinking on the beach. Jack is talking about the song he'll get the whole crew to sing once he's Captain again. Elizabeth tries to appeal to his pride (pardon the pun) by saying he will be "the most fearsome pirate." When she says this, Jack pauses. He doesn't shoot down the idea, but he does clarify that what is important to him is the Pearl, but not just because it's a vessel and a powerful tool to have at sea. That's not all the Pearl is to him. "What the Pearl is... What the Black Pearl really is... is Freedom."
Throughout all the movies, we see Jack let people think he's after power, and he may take whatever power he falls upon, but ultimately, that isn't his goal. That isn't what he's truly living for. He wants a life at sea, where he can do as he pleases, live by his own rules, and be who he is. Because the sea is a part of who he is. The Black Pearl is a part of who his, just like his hat, rings, eyeliner, and everything else. Whenever these things are taken and kept from him, he is captured. He is not free. Then, when he is free again, he always comes back for these things because they all represent freedom. And they represent freedom because so long as he has these things, he is free to be himself.
All this is really just to say that I love this movie so much, and I love pirate stuff so much because, like Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, and eventually Will Turner, I know myself and will do everything I can to not have that taken away from me. And I believe everyone has the right to know themselves and not have it taken away from them either. We all deserve to know ourselves and know freedom at the same time without fear.

no no you’re not listening. It’s a queerplatonic relationship. Will and Elizabeth are in love with eachother, and also with Jack. Jack is sexually attracted to both of them but the closest he’s ever come to romantic attraction is with The Black Pearl. Elizabeth and Will are fine with this. They’re all dating.

I love my LGBT pirates, OFMD was pure ambrosia balm to my wounds, and Jack Sparrow is my favourite bisexual disaster pirate <3
We goddamn exist and have existed since humankind can remember, whether the bigots like it or not, I don't like capitalism either, yet it exists.
You ever think about how historically inaccurate the depiction of pirates with a cast of entirely straight characters are, considering how widely common and accepted homosexual relationships were on ships, not to mention the existence of matelotage which was essentially a same sex marriage arrangement that was often romantic and sexual in nature? And how heteronormativity has somehow become so prevalent that people today are convinced that lgbt pirates are the thing that's unrealistic???
Because I do
#queer pirates#lgbt pirates#Jack Sparrow is definitely Bi and I will die on that hill#Why do they always use queer coding when they're too chicken to follow it through to the conclusion#The conclusion is very gay

Since it’s been a year since Burning Shores came out, some thoughts on Seyka:
TL;DR: Great character, really happy with her as a love interest for Aloy. They do some really interesting things with her that I never really see addressed so I wanted to talk about them.
She is tangibly shown to be much more of a match for Aloy through gameplay. Compared to other npcs, she solves things faster, does more damage, is a much more formidable melee combatant, faster climber - she even has a fucking Valor Surge using her Focus that does pretty significant tear damage to large machines like Slaughterspines. Environmental storytelling- Seyka’s skiff has at least 2-3 Tiderippers’ worth of parts, meaning she’s been out on her own killing the things to build boat motors, and she has some ambient dialogue that strongly suggests she’s fought and killed Slaugterspines before. Is some of this npc tech advancements in Burning Shores? Maybe, but it feels intentional.
Seyka has a natural probing curiosity about the old world that for the most part Aloy’s other companions didn’t have without some significant hand-holding from Aloy to get them started, and some of her close friend (but not base team) characters just don’t have at all. I don’t mean this as a moral judgement, everyone is different and has different strengths and priorities , but it’s absolutely critical that a partner for Aloy have that kind of curiosity - it’s such a big part of her character. While she lives in this new world, she’s never going to be entirely a part of it. Like she says, she finds belonging in individuals, and not really the tribes. I don’t really see Aloy settling down in Meridian or Mother’s Heart. She needs to have a life of exploration and discovery and Seyka seems cut from that cloth too, whether she was always that way or being marooned gave her a fresh perspective.
Seyka did risk death using the focus and decided to do it anyway- in Rheng’s notes he calls for capital punishment for her. The threat is never *too* present but honestly I think that’s a broader critique of the series and pretty consistent with the writing of conflicts in Horizon. I agree they could have played up the dramatic tension a bit, but this is a person who weighed the risk of a military execution by a totalitarian state and immediately decided it was worth it to save her sister and others. I think Aloy can intimately relate, given what she went through for Beta.
Even though it’s a DLC, she has a TON of screen time, probably comparable to Kotallo in HFW, and Horizon does SO much storytelling through gameplay and ambient dialogue. I think she’s given a LOT of narrative space to breathe. She’s also has her own musical cues and leitmotifs that do a ton of foreshadowing work through the DLC - in terms of musical cues and framing she’s very associated with the acoustic guitar, and the flute melody in ‘Her Sky, Her Sea’ has for Aloy and Seyka the same function that ‘It Can’t Last’ does for Ellie and Dina in TLOU2 - next time you play Burning Shores, listen for it. That and the guitar cues from ‘The Idea of Home’ and ‘For His Entertainment’ do a lot of emotional work. It’s great stuff.
Okay and lastly- YMMV on this one - I’ve def talked about it with friends before but I don’t think I’ve said it on Tumblr. I’m a firm believer that meta narratives and the way that stories are situated and created in our own world matter and that art deserves to be taken seriously and dissected. I love Horizon, but it, and Aloy as a protagonist, are absolutely drenched in white savior and colonial storytelling tropes. Every time I play Frozen Wilds, all I can think of is Jack Sparrow going “and then they made me their chief”. There’s a lot of iffy stuff in the games, as much as I absolutely love them. We’ll have to see how H3 goes, but Burning Shores is MUCH better about this and honestly Seyka is a huge part of it. The story centers itself on a queer woman of color who is pretty tangibly presented as Aloy’s equal with her own strengths and weaknesses throughout the story and takes the lead just as often if not more than Aloy does, which I find really refreshing. It doesn’t entirely fix Aloy’s white savior issues but I think it’s a really good move for the narrative that continues the themes found in HFW about community and connection.
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds (2017)
#Seyka#horizon forbidden west#hfw#aloy#horizon#horizon zero dawn#guerrilla games#hzd#horizon burning shores#hfw seyka#horizon critical#The musical leitmotifs are gooooood shit#It was one of the things that really hooked me with the dlc because Horizon had never done that for a character relationship before#Also the last point is not a personal attack#I like lots of vaguely problematic things

The loser is either too queer to be a cishet movie or too cishet to be queer...
How is it cishet media?
LSoH: Little shop of horrors. one of its main plot points is a cishet romance. besides the space plant thing which is the main plot.
PotCCoTBP: cishet bc it's abt elizabeth swann desperate for man ass
How is it lgbt?
LSoH: AUDREY AND SEYMOUR ARE T4T. to me. also audrey ii <3 she, in the theater, is traditionally played by someone w a masculine voice. that’s lgbt to ME.
PotCCoTBP: pirates of the caribbean is lgbt bc elizabeth swann has genderful swag and will has beautiful puppydog eyes and jack sparrow for all his numerous flaws is getting real faggy with it
