I‘ve been thinking a lot about how perfect it is that Riko is King and Kevin is Queen (the King in chess being the center off attention but he’s actually not that powerful by himself, and the Queen being the deadliest piece on the board).
And it just hit me how Kevin is actually like a pawn that made it to the other side of the board and became a Queen. He left his king behind and ran away and it’s a dangerous path but he fights through it, survives, makes it all the way to the other side and in the end he is Queen, he is fast, he is powerful, he is on top, and the King is nothing without him.
And when the King has lost all his men, when there is no one left to shield him, he is defeated. Checkmate. And the Queen has survived.

My wish for tsc2 is for when Keven comes to cali he is invited to a boardgame night with the trojans. Jeremy try to makes him play chess and then we learn that Keven DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO PLAY.
After “Did you know I’ve never been skiing”; “did you know I’ve never played chess”

(The King's Men, ch.17)
Kevin covering his tattoo feels so much more groundbreaking when you remember that he has been wearing his number since he was nine. That's over a decade of seeing that he was Riko's second any time he looked in the mirror.

Second best
There is this bitter-sweet thing about a second place. You never win it, you lose it, you’re so close, yet never close enough. When you watch people on that podium, getting their medals, you can always see it. The bright, unapologetic, sometimes cocky smile of the winner and the relieved and proud expression on the third’s face, but the second just stands there. They applaud and they cheer and they smile, but look at their eyes, their eyes are empty. They always beat themselves up inside, they know that if they had just done a little bit more, pushed themselves a little bit harder, they would have won. They would have been on top, but instead they failed.
Their silver medal serves as a reminder. It hangs heavy on their necks, it crashes their chests, until they can’t breathe. Its purpose is to push them, drive them to success, make them hungry for that gold, make them ruthless.
But what if the medal doesn’t hang on your chest, what if it’s not just a metal piece on a string that you can take off wherever you want. What if it has been carved onto your skin and forced into your mind since you can remember, and you have to carry it with you wherever you go?
The two tattooed on Kevin’s cheek is nothing like a silver medal. It doesn't drive him to success, it pushes him down, reminds him what that gold would cost him. What it had already cost him. His hand begins to tremble, he feels the phantom pain that the heavy racket had caused him all those months ago. He can’t endure that again, he knows his place. He is nothing, but a pawn in the king's game and he will always be that one step below. Looking up with an empty gaze, but Kevin will always know that it will never be his turn and that it has never been his fault.
He is second not because he hadn't done enough, not because he hadn’t pushed himself harder, but because no matter how heavy the silver is, the gold would kill him. He would have died in the light of its glory from the hands that used to wield it. He would have begged for mercy, knowing that it wouldn’t be granted.
The bottle stands in front of him, half empty; a cruel reminder of what he had let himself become. It clouds his judgment, it makes him brave, it makes him reckless. He takes a sip and it burns his throat, but it’s the only thing that brings him comfort. He is so used to the pain, so used to the blind obedience. His head is too heavy these days, too many thoughts, too many decisions that are left for him to deal with, too many actions that are not just thrust upon him, but are an active choice of his own free will.
He hates it.
The alcohol running through his veins makes it all go away, makes everything go quiet for just a moment. His head empty, his limbs lighter, his pain so much easier to carry. It makes him forget about the consequences.
He is standing on that podium, the silver is hanging on his neck and Riko is looking down at him. Kevin wants to reach him, he knows he can. He knows that the second place doesn’t belong to him. HIs cheek burns, the metal is pulling him down, but he can take it off. He never thought that he could, but although his brain is slower, it has never felt so clear and focused.
He is a pawn in the king’s game, that won’t change, that will be true till the day he dies, he will play this game, but he is done holding himself back. He reaches for his phone and dials, waiting for the coach to pick up. He is tired of making himself small, only for Riko to be able to look at him from above.
He is going to make this one fight fair, even if it will make it his last.
“Let Riko be King, most coveted, most protected. He’ll sacrifice every piece he has to protect his throne. Whatever. Me? I’m going to be the deadliest piece on the board.”

So we all know that Riko is King and Kevin is Queen (in my interpretation he‘s a pawn that was transformed into a Queen, to be exact).
But now the question is, which chess piece represents Jean best?
Here‘s my idea: Jean is the dark-squared bishop. Why? Because if we assume the Ravens are the black chess pieces (which makes sense considering their color scheme), then the dark-squared bishop is the one that’s right next to the king. And as long as the pawns are blocking his way, the bishop can’t move. He’s trapped right next to his violent king.
Another thing about bishops is that they can never change the color they’re walking on. A dark-squared bishop will always have black tiles beneath it. No matter how far it goes, the ground that it’s standing on will still be black. And Jean, too, has a hard time letting go of the raven‘s darkness. It haunts him wherever he goes. Then Cat takes him to the beach, and for once Jean doesn’t look down at that black foundation that his life is built upon. He looks to the horizon and he looks at the endless sky and he realizes the world is bigger than the Ravens’ stifling nest.
And what if that pawn that is standing right in front of the king is Kevin? The e7 pawn is one of the pawns that are blocking the bishop’s way, and doesn’t Kevin’s escape, in a way, also lead to Jean being rescued by Renee? Would Renee have reached out to him and eventually dragged him to Palmetto, if she hadn’t known Kevin, if she hadn’t known anything about what Riko and the Ravens are like?
But Jean didn’t leave of his own free will. He was captured. Which means that the moment he left Evermore, he actually stopped being that dark-squared bishop. However, he can’t let go of that role easily. Being a Raven, being number 3, was torturous but it was all he had. He had a clear task to fulfill and no room to even think about who he wants to be and now the Trojans are suddenly giving him so much freedom, so much that it’s disorienting.
So I think I need to correct myself. Jean is not the dark-squared bishop anymore. He was. Now he needs to find out what his true calling is.

This Thea discourse is honestly concerning.
First of all, STOP BOTHERING NORA ABOUT STUFF LIKE THIS. Do not say things like she was wrong for writing Thea like that. Like stop, they’re her books. I know we might feel like they’re ours sometimes because she wrote characters that we connected to so much but they are HER CHARACTERS.
Also I don’t care who you want Kevin to be with. It doesn’t matter.
Do I think he should be with Thea, no. Do I ship Kevin with a man, yes. Am I going to fight with people on the internet about fictional characters and who they should end up with, ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Stop fighting.
