TLT theory: Aim, Jod, and the second part of the message

My brain is fevered. I feel like I've constructed an elaborate Pepe Silvia corkboard in my mind, and it feels like it makes sense of everything, but I honestly have no clue if that certainty will last very long.

I think I know what the Messenger is carrying. I think I know why John has waited ten thousand years.

BoE's chronology has always been kind of weird to me: Five thousand years after the Resurrection happens, they pop up with intense and detailed knowledge of the 21st century! Jod destroys languages and cultures and societies, but BoE keeps popping up! How.

Originally I thought the continuous thread over the years was a Lyctor who helped them (and the necromantic implant does seem to point that way) but I also think part of it is that the ships that escaped just before Earth's devastation have been showing up one by one, over a huge span of time. That's why Wake says "My long-dead natal sun" and can quote Eminem at length; she spent ten thousand years suspended in time, before re-entering it.

I think that AIM's message is the beacon that will call the last of the FTL fleet out of the chrono well. They are "we", they are the first of two parts, because their identity is the person they were before coming the Messenger, and the ships that still haven't oscillated back into three-dimensional space yet, because they are under AIM's personal guardianship/intimately tied to possession of her body.

I think the only reason I haven’t done it already is that I can’t bear the idea that I wouldn’t be able to touch them—that they’d still be out there …

I think Jod has been at this for so long because he is waiting for an event that could literally take an infinite amount of time to occur. He hasn't killed the entire colonized population yet because he wants something out of them, and it doesn't seem to be labour or devotion or even thanergy.

I think he's looking for the fleet's beacon, in a way that's like lighting a grassfire to flush animals out of hiding and deprive them of shelter. I think he's constantly killing planets and relocating and resettling populations before funnelling them together again, like a distillery trying to heat and separate different liquids as they move from flask to flask, because he wants to finally decant the key to the last ships that escaped him.

"How's the Captain holding up?" the overqualified Haespar Kraus asked Trisha, who was just leaving Knoslark's quarters, with a very fine braid he noted.

"Awful, he didn't ask a single thing about sea turtles. It's like I was talkin' to a brick wall, that can knit. I mean I was literally starin' at a wall, but it's like there was nothin' behind me either."

"Well this won't cheer you up then. We need to go on another expedition."

"Already? No way is Ying up and about already, and this" she points an irritated finger at the sign on Knoslark's door, "stupid thing is technically an order from our superior to not do a damn thing."

"Quite. Another technicality is that we will not be leaving the ship for this journey. Remember how the warp jump fried all our quantum gear, as well as numerous sub-systems and left us with one running reactor? That list also includes the internal ship-wide scanners and most monitoring sensors. And the drone controls."

"No way. She can't be serious." Trisha's face began to pale at the realization of what they were about to embark on.

"I'm afraid so."

"TAMEKI!! DO YOU KNOW HOW BIG THIS STUPID SHIP IS! WE'LL BE GOING THROUGH IT FOR WEEKS!"

"Closer to three months. I did the math." Haespar said with a glint of smugness. He loved being right with numbers to back him up. Though it quickly faded as he was also part of this tour of the Radiant Dusk, "At least the turbo-lifts work, so at most we will be a seven hour crawl from everyone else at the furthest nook we have to inspect."

"Woooow, you really know how to cheer a girl up, y'know."

"Even better news then - we can't lift off into space on one reactor in this gravity, AND we don't know if there are any radiation or coolant leaks. Suits on at all times."

Human ships are big. Seemingly pointlessly so, but there is a reason for everything. Sure, it's not the best reasons, but they're legit.

You need big engines to carry a lot of stuff into space.

You need big power generators to have enough thrust.

You need bigger cargo holds since the generators are taking up too much space.

You need a stronger, thicker hull to keep it all together.

You need more powerful engines now to move all that extra mass.

You need additional lift chutes and corridors to connect all the parts of the ship

You need an army of drones to maintain all of everything.

You need a bigger cargo hold since everything else is taking up the previously allotted space now.

You need...

And it just goes on until somebody finally decides that a 10 kilometer long ship that can transform into a circle is enough engineering for one day. Then you hand it over to a crew of 27 and let them do whatever, you installed a few thousand redundancies and safety features (adding a few hundred thousand meters of wiring, piping and code and a million tons of matter and bumping everything else up a size category in the process, but who's counting) what could go wrong?

Nothing! You're an engineer who thought of everything, not an architect who draws ugly shapes.

So yeah, you try exploring every street and building and attic in your city. Then do it five more times because in space you can just build in every direction. Oh and take notes and pictures of everything, because if you don't, you might miss a loose cable.

And if you happen to be neglectful and try to turn on your star creating power reactors, you might end up with a permanent tan.

Silm reread 9: Meanwhile in Beleriand

I need to slow down the queue, I do less posts now. (Yes, I do queue for longer ones; usually post immediately the shorter / low-effort ones)

All the Elves in Beleriand consider Thingol their king. But Melian is not a ruling Queen. Thingol rules, Melian advises the Elves. Makes sense with her being a Maia.

Luthien is born late in first (Valian) century of Melkor's imprisonment, this is also said to be the peak of Valinor's happiness. I would assume Feanor is born short after this, but it's just a guess.

Later: Dwarvrs. Unclear when did they wake up, but they seem pretty new here, so maybe they awake not long after Melkor was imprisoned?

Khuzdul is hard for the Sinda, Sindarin is easy fro the Dwarves. Later it's the same with Quenya. Either:

Sindarin is very easy

Sindar are bad with languages

both Dwarves and the Noldor are great at languages (which makes sense because they are close to Aule and I think it helps)

Elves and Dwarves live in peace, they're friends with Thingol, all is nice. Melian has a foreshadowing foresight that it will stop being nice soon. The Dwarves (very happily and paid more than they asked for) make Menegroth for Thingol. It is entered via a bridge (no Orodreth do not copy this) and is cool.

The Dwarves hate the sea (probably something left from earlier Legendarium when Dwarves were evil). Gimli must have been very brave.

The Dwarves tell thingol that the Valar hadn't fully removed the evil on the North. How do they know this? Also, it reminds me about how the Valar were supposed to do this actually and did not.

Also, if anyone can help me with this (I may later make a separate posr): they mention "two monsters appearing again in the land east of the mountains". It's about Ered Luin. But what are the two beasts??? Not Ungoliant, as she is elsewhere. Maybe Sauron? I'm not sure if he spent all the time in Angband. But with whom? Thuringwedhil? Is she this old?

Or maybe it's just an error in translation. "Two" and "wild" aren't that different words and it would make sense to be wild beasts…

Also, orcs appear.

Thingol makes weapons and chain armor. Also, Denethor (the original one) is a thing.

Daeron was a scholar?!? The most famous scholar in Doriath. And he made the runes.

Ungoliant goes to Doriath, is blocked by Melian, lives in caves and messes up the whole part of map. Still, not clear who ever saw her if anyone.

A sentence about orcs breeding in deep earth, so again, the origin of orcs and quantum canon. they besiege Cirdan. Melian makes the Girdle.

After the Darkening Melian gets no news from Valinor via messengers, dreams nor spirits. Which nicely gives us the list of how she used to get news before, I think.

The white background, although limited by the frame of the picture, extends beyond the screen, spreading throughout the entire Universe, it represents the infinite love that is the Creator of All.

The grey fade represents the little tiny bit of darkness that is in the entire universe, including all dimensions.

The color blue represents the throat chakra, communication, expression, connection.

The thin black outer edge of the blue triangle symbolizes the free will we all have to deny the light that is our essence.

The blue triangle can be seen as a symbol for messengers of divine universal truth and the eternal love that we are always receiving from Source, which we can attune ourselves to, which we can absorb and marinate in so that we can embody God more fully as a living being.

Watch this emblem or visualize it with closed eyes to connect more strongly to the divine that dwells within. It is one of myriad permissionslips to grow in awareness of who you are as an expanded, loved, and cared for being of profound power and importance.

You are important, you do have a purpose, a mission, thank you for being a unique aspect of the One, an invaluable expression through which God and many other beings experience life.

Who is looking through your eyes is not just you alone, it is all the beings in your DNA, both physical (the smallest part of who we are) and quantum (the vast majority of who we are), all of who you are, were and shall be is you.

Embrace this idea with the arms of infinity, and remember that you are ALL THAT IS.

How does religion work on Gallifrey?

Ooo, fun! Here's a brief whistlestop tour of it because, unlike most things, a lot is known already and I could write an essay.

🌌 The Creation of the Universe

Gallifreyan legends tell of the Universe's birth from a sentient singularity called 'Eru' or the 'Great Old One Azathoth'. The Mother Goddess used the Aurora Temporalis to create Time itself, and in turn, seconds were created by the Temporal Phoenix (who was apparently imprisoned in a time loop by people known as the Philesians).

📜 Old Times

Shobogans were the original indigenous people of Gallifrey, and some say they were immortal until Death's Messenger came to Mount Perdition. (Rather, an ancient species of religious zealots named the Kotturuh brought the concept of mortality as a 'gift' to the universe, limiting the lifespans of other species.)

Shobogans worshipped a pantheon of gods known as the Menti Celesti ('heavenly minds') and made offerings to them in alcoved shrines in their homes, particularly if they'd had good fortune. The primary gods included Pain, Death, Time, and Fate (Osuda). There's also the mystic virgin moon goddess Pazithi, for whom one of Gallifrey's moons is named. The Devil was the Dark God Valdemar.

The Shobogans also believed in reincarnation and said that after death, souls ended up in a mysterious sea, where you can hear them whispering - which is probably their concept of Hell.

😇 The Order of the Pythia

The Order of the Pythia was the central religious institution during these times. The Pythia, chosen by the Menti Celesti, was the supreme spiritual leader, ruling over the Shobogans. This role included responsibilities like being the Mouthpiece of the Gods and the Guardian of the Great Book of Future Legends. The Pythia and her Sisterhood performed sacrifices and rituals to gain favour from the Menti Celesti and foresee the future.

🔮 The Decline and Transformation of Religion

During the Time of Chaos when Rassilon stuck his finger in, the influence of the Pythia flopped big, leading to the collapse of the order. The surviving Sisterhood relocated to the planet Karn, becoming the Sisterhood of the Flame under High Priestess Maren. It was also at this time the ousted Pythia condemned Gallifrey to be barren - this is known as the Curse of the Pythia, which I'm sure you'll already know about.

🚀 Beliefs and Rationalism in the Era of Rassilon

In the era of Rassilon, a lot of Gallifreyans moved towards a more scientific and rational understanding of the universe. The discovery of the ratio 1 to 812, crucial to quantum string theory, reinforced beliefs in a creator but distanced them from traditional worship.

⛪ The Black Council

Somewhere between Rassilon and the 1st Doctor, Gallifreyan religion included the Black Council of Cardinals, Time Priests, and other religious figures, led by the Supreme Pontiff of Time. However, significant reforms thousands of years before the Doctor's time restricted the religious class's power, eliminating their access to Time Travel and genetic benefits. By the time of the Doctor's exile, the position of Supreme Pontiff was abolished, and the monasteries dissolved.

⏲️ Modern Era

Despite all these shifts, about 25% of Gallifreyans in the modern era still worship the Menti Celesti, with private prayers to Time and her sisters. Modern Gallifreyans don't really understand or give merit to the concepts of good and evil, and sins are virtually nonexistent. Allegedly.

Okay apparently getting back into Doctor Who was what I needed to start wanting to write again. I wanna list everything I'm thinking about right this second before I jump on to Gatwa's Christmas special

TenToo and Rose have been exploring and were surprised to find the Shoboggans. Moving Tecteun forward in time cuz I can, and so everyone's very excited and proud of their foremost space explorer, so they go off looking for her so TenToo can try and suss out where Gallifrey's history diverges. Their TARDIS drops them off at the foot of a wormhole where there is a friend or sibling of the Doctor's (not that any of them know that) but because they actually care about kids, they sit together and wait. TenToo, at a loss when Kid describes their situation, sends out one of the emergency psychic messengers for the Doctor, figuring that it'll either get through by the wonders of the universe or he's just as lost but feels better for talking out loud. He doesn't expect to get a message back from Ambiguously-season-13 Thirteen (maybe even immediately after she gives up the watch to the TARDIS, lol)

The Flux disrupts E-Space. Romana comes back (I don't know a lot about Romana and having just read up on her wikipedia page I'm gonna say) When she finds out Gallifrey is gone, she's torn between intrigue at the possibility of having adventures in her home universe again and the devastation of losing her home. She ends up going to Graham's group for help, but they somehow all dance around the fact that she's looking for the Doctor/they all know the Doctor (they're just people who like helping, she's just looking for someone who can give her an update on her home). At least until Tegan has some kind of off-handed mention of Adric and Romana clues in all at once.

At first I just wanted Doctor/Doctor smut because they've always been flattering to themselves and Thirteen during her quantum state thing was wild but then Fifteen gave Fourteen that kiss on the forehead and now I immediately need Doctor/Doctor h/c

Fourteen being grounded aside from actual-one-trips gives him time to just. Spend with the TARDIS. Track down archived console rooms she'll let him into and ones she won't. Sitting down with her and sorting out a bunch of bypassed systems and such that he doesn't really need bypassed if he's not always, always running. Just sitting with her and talking with her.

Some silly little vignette type of thing where the Doc has to reckon with 'am I just. The source of *all* Time Lord myths?' Reeling over the fact that he probably actually *knew* Omega once upon a time instead of just. Y'know. Being responsible for his death.

And this one's not a story thought, just a thought-thought, but there's arguably always been a pattern in New Who of the next Doctor addressing what the last one saw as flaws or at least were hurt by things. Thirteen doesn't know who she is anymore? Alright, Fourteen will be someone he already knows backwards and forwards and was so reluctant to let go of. And then he still needed therapy lol but the regeneration addressed the problem, too.

Unlocking mRNA’s cancer-fighting potential

What if training your immune system to attack cancer cells was as easy as training it to fight Covid-19? Many people believe the technology behind some Covid-19 vaccines, messenger RNA, holds great promise for stimulating immune responses to cancer.

But using messenger RNA, or mRNA, to get the immune system to mount a prolonged and aggressive attack on cancer cells — while leaving healthy cells alone — has been a major challenge.

The MIT spinout Strand Therapeutics is attempting to solve that problem with an advanced class of mRNA molecules that are designed to sense what type of cells they encounter in the body and to express therapeutic proteins only once they have entered diseased cells.

“It’s about finding ways to deal with the signal-to-noise ratio, the signal being expression in the target tissue and the noise being expression in the nontarget tissue,” Strand CEO Jacob Becraft PhD ’19 explains. “Our technology amplifies the signal to express more proteins for longer while at the same time effectively eliminating the mRNA’s off-target expression.”

Strand is set to begin its first clinical trial in April, which is testing a proprietary, self-replicating mRNA molecule’s ability to express immune signals directly from a tumor, eliciting the immune system to attack and kill the tumor cells directly. It’s also being tested as a possible improvement for existing treatments to a number of solid tumors.

As they work to commercialize its early innovations, Strand’s team is continuing to add capabilities to what it calls its “programmable medicines,” improving mRNA molecules’ ability to sense their environment and generate potent, targeted responses where they’re needed most.

“Self-replicating mRNA was the first thing that we pioneered when we were at MIT and in the first couple years at Strand,” Becraft says. “Now we’ve also moved into approaches like circular mRNAs, which allow each molecule of mRNA to express more of a protein for longer, potentially for weeks at a time. And the bigger our cell-type specific datasets become, the better we are at differentiating cell types, which makes these molecules so targeted we can have a higher level of safety at higher doses and create stronger treatments.”

Making mRNA smarter

Becraft got his first taste of MIT as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois when he secured a summer internship in the lab of MIT Institute Professor Bob Langer.

“That’s where I learned how lab research could be translated into spinout companies,” Becraft recalls.

The experience left enough of an impression on Becraft that he returned to MIT the next fall to earn his PhD, where he worked in the Synthetic Biology Center under professor of bioengineering and electrical engineering and computer science Ron Weiss. During that time, he collaborated with postdoc Tasuku Kitada to create genetic “switches” that could control protein expression in cells.

Becraft and Kitada realized their research could be the foundation of a company around 2017 and started spending time in the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. They also received support from MIT Sandbox and eventually worked with the Technology Licensing Office to establish Strand’s early intellectual property.

“We started by asking, where is the highest unmet need that also allows us to prove out the thesis of this technology? And where will this approach have therapeutic relevance that is a quantum leap forward from what anyone else is doing?” Becraft says. “The first place we looked was oncology.”

People have been working on cancer immunotherapy, which turns a patient’s immune system against cancer cells, for decades. Scientists in the field have developed drugs that produce some remarkable results in patients with aggressive, late-stage cancers. But most next-generation cancer immunotherapies are based on recombinant (lab-made) proteins that are difficult to deliver to specific targets in the body and don’t remain active for long enough to consistently create a durable response.

More recently, companies like Moderna, whose founders also include MIT alumni, have pioneered the use of mRNAs to create proteins in cells. But to date, those mRNA molecules have not been able to change behavior based on the type of cells they enter, and don’t last for very long in the body.

“If you’re trying to engage the immune system with a tumor cell, the mRNA needs to be expressing from the tumor cell itself, and it needs to be expressing over a long period of time,” Becraft says. “Those challenges are hard to overcome with the first generation of mRNA technologies.”

Strand has developed what it calls the world’s first mRNA programming language that allows the company to specify the tissues its mRNAs express proteins in.

“We built a database that says, ‘Here are all of the different cells that the mRNA could be delivered to, and here are all of their microRNA signatures,’ and then we use computational tools and machine learning to differentiate the cells,” Becraft explains. “For instance, I need to make sure that the messenger RNA turns off when it’s in the liver cell, and I need to make sure that it turns on when it’s in a tumor cell or a T-cell.”

Strand also uses techniques like mRNA self-replication to create more durable protein expression and immune responses.

“The first versions of mRNA therapeutics, like the Covid-19 vaccines, just recapitulate how our body’s natural mRNAs work,” Becraft explains. “Natural mRNAs last for a few days, maybe less, and they express a single protein. They have no context-dependent actions. That means wherever the mRNA is delivered, it’s only going to express a molecule for a short period of time. That’s perfect for a vaccine, but it’s much more limiting when you want to create a protein that’s actually engaging in a biological process, like activating an immune response against a tumor that could take many days or weeks.”

Technology with broad potential

Strand’s first clinical trial is targeting solid tumors like melanoma and triple-negative breast cancer. The company is also actively developing mRNA therapies that could be used to treat blood cancers.

“We’ll be expanding into new areas as we continue to de-risk the translation of the science and create new technologies,” Becraft says.

Strand plans to partner with large pharmaceutical companies as well as investors to continue developing drugs. Further down the line, the founders believe future versions of its mRNA therapies could be used to treat a broad range of diseases.

“Our thesis is: amplified expression in specific, programmed target cells for long periods of time,” Becraft says. “That approach can be utilized for [immunotherapies like] CAR T-cell therapy, both in oncology and autoimmune conditions. There are also many diseases that require cell-type specific delivery and expression of proteins in treatment, everything from kidney disease to types of liver disease. We can envision our technology being used for all of that.”
