You ever play prototype and/or infamous?

Neither, although given the dual zombie/superhero fixation both should probably (sigh) Go On The List. Viewed at a distance, Infamous, as a franchise, has always been interesting to me because of how it's a really prominent data point when it comes to working out the strengths and weaknesses of an open-ended superhero game. My understanding is that in contrast to Prototype (where you're mostly The Special Boy) it's a setting that wants superhumanity to be large enough to act as a demographic- it wants to be a world where people besides the player are empowered, and lots of them- but the need to standardize enemies that you'll encounter again and again means that this rounds up to there being functionally a handful of power types that a whole hell of a lot of people receive, rather than the beautiful myriad of X-Men or Wild Cards. Likewise, the need to operationalize the protagonist's powerset as something that can grow or expand over the course of a playthrough leads to extremely generalist interpretations of electrokinesis, pyrokinesis, and so on, rather than the hyperspecific, limited implementations of the same found in other cape-punk media. And of course it was produced in that mid-2000s era where character dress and presentation in an original IP could be superhero-coded, iconic, but not too expressly superheroic, because we want to be able to take our juvenile power fantasies oh-so very seriously. For very understandable production reasons it mostly appears to add up to the exact kind of superhero setting that isn't really my cup of tea even if it's perfectly reasonable on its own terms. I'd love a game with its basic formula that's much more willing to embrace conventional superhero aesthetics, with the requisite worldbuilding to make those aesthetics and conventions remotely plausible within the fiction- we've all read Worm, you know what I mean by this

Welcome to the Sweet Voice Cafe, a HLVRAI AU!

The cafe serves ice cream, hot drinks, and a few options of pastries! Their special includes different themed ice creams with sweet voice ingredients that give actual effects. (Calming, kindness, sleepiness, love, etc.) The decorations are loud and bright, driving away most “karens”. Sunkist is the mascot! The science team has a large apartment upstairs where they reside. It’s basically a collection of Outcodes. This is an AU where Black Mesa, aliens, and powers don’t exist. They simply exist in the Half Life video games. The government has taken notice of this establishment, but are so frightened by the unknown powers of these entities, that they don’t take action.

Benrey (Benny)

He/It/They (He preferred) Nonbinary Omnisexual

He messed around and found out, escaping his reality for but a few minutes. The universe didn’t like that and hard reset, replacing them with an identical Benrey. He can visit his old AU, but if he ever tries to interact with someone he gets teleported out of distance. He eventually found the Sweet Voice Cafe. In his free time, he enjoys working there (it supplies sweet voice or works the cash register sometimes), playing video games, or traveling the multiverse, usually the latter.

Outfits include blues, purples, and pinks, plus sort of 80s aesthetics. Comfy clothes like hoodies and sweatshirts. It does have some casual hats, but his helmet is a comfort item.

Mr. Coomer

He/Him Trans Bisexual

He’s from an AU where he became self-aware way too early on and panicked. The game didn’t like that and expelled him from the universe. He floated in the void for a bit, but luckily not long enough to go crazy, less than a couple of days. He was rescued by Bubby and they ended up traveling together for a while before meeting the others and settling down. He became a co-owner of Sweet Voice Cafe, but enjoys working alongside everyone, usually greeting customers. He’s a very fun and extroverted manager, but takes harassment of his employees very seriously. A look alone can scare off the worst of customers.

Outfits include collared shirts, Hawaiian shirts, and rolled up sleeves. Likes green tones and bootleg brand logos.

Bubby

He/Xim Agender Pansexual Demiromantic

Bubby’s world was dismantled very quickly by a virus, only a few minutes into gameplay. Bubby had only met Tommy for a short moment. When the world glitched out of existence, his body went into overdrive to protect him. Xe floated through the void for a long time in a coma. He finally awoke when a faceless NPC let him out. After exploring his powers, Xe traveled the multiverse alone at random for quite a while, a couple years at least. He met Coomer and they settled down in an unknown AU after about a year. He’s a co-owner of SVC, but prefers to work more behind the scenes, ordering people around in the kitchen and making hot drinks (no need to pay for machines yippee!). Although he’s strong enough to pick the AUs he goes to now, he only uses it to visit rage rooms lol. He has a couple pet Snarks named Pyro and Ember.

Fashion-wise, he would wear any type of outfit and SLAY. But his preferences include leather jackets, turtlenecks, and flowy skirts. He prefers cyan, black, red, and neon colors, especially if it has flame motifs. Xe doesn’t wear pastels unless it’s blue.

Tommy Neapolitan

He/Him Cis Asexual Panromantic

Tommy hails from a world where he chose his last name based on ice cream, and loves smoothies instead of soda. He experienced the entire game before he was taken during his birthday party at Ben and Jerrys. (SVC) Gman, grieving from his loss, saw Tommy and embraced him, taking him with him to the next AU. With the lack of Tommy, his original world was overwritten to fix it, effectively replacing him. Gman and Tommy didn’t get along for the longest time, but now they’re on speaking terms, albeit tense. Tommy manages most of the ice cream department because of his expertise in flavors. He also does the bookkeeping.

Tommy wears mostly soft colors, usually yellow, orange, and pink coded. He prefers loose clothing, but ties it back when working with food.

Gordon Martinez

He/Him Trans Bisexual

Because he hails from a “it is a game” AU, you can imagine how shocking it was when supernatural stuff happened in his OWN home, not in the VR set. To this day, he’s still unsure what exactly happened. Aliens? The government? Fairies? He doesn’t know and doesn’t care. When they started getting attacked, his first instinct was of course to protect his son. Soon enough, Bubby rescued them and brought them to SVC. He is divorced, but luckily Gordon has full custody and is just grateful his son is safe. He was more than happy to settle down, despite Joshua’s grumblings. He helps with the miscellaneous baking in the kitchen. His bestseller is his croissants! In his free time, he enjoys streaming or binge watching tv.

He’s drawn to warm colors for his outfits, usually oranges and browns. He likes sweaters or shirts with funny dad jokes. He has a couple of hoodies as well.

Joshua Martinez

He/Him

Joshua is 6 years old. He doesn't understand what happened, but whines to Gordon about missing his friends and why they can’t go back. He’s happy he gets a big room to himself now at least! Gordon eventually enrolled him in a nearby school. He enjoys cowboys, dinosaurs, music, and video games. His least favorite class is math. He very much enjoys the free ice cream he gets from the shop. Benrey had to be scolded for giving him too much one time asdgfhjkl.

Tshirts with logos! Doesn’t have a color preference yet, but does enjoy his cowboy hat and assorted bandanas the team keeps getting him.

George Mantle (GMan)

He/It Agender Aroace

George lost his Tommy in a freak accident that also wiped out his entire world. He wandered the multiverse aimlessly, unfortunately not finding any AUs with a Tommy either. It met a Slick once, but noticed how differently they sounded and acted, so he didn’t pry. The first Tommy he saw was Neapolitan. He immediately hugged him, and the universe decided “oh hey, angst” and kicked them both out. It took a very long time for the two to get on good terms. It tries its best in forming a connection though. Gman focuses on keeping the establishment running and secretly watches the government to make sure they don’t do something… unwise to his friends. He wants nothing to do with multiversal travel anymore, no siree.

He wears lots of suits. They’re just the most comfortable to him. They do end up varying in color and pattern. One time Tommy got him a long sleeved shirt with a pattern of a fake suit on it and he nearly cried. (Tommy took it to mean the gift was bad, but Gman was just moved his “son” was trying to make a connection.)

Forzen

He/She Bigender Abrosexual

Forzen doesn’t quite remember where he came from. She just woke up here one day, I guess. He doesn’t live with the science team and only shows up every once and a while as a customer. He only orders original Rocky Road ice cream. In reality, the government asked her to keep an eye on SVC. Since this is a world where aliens and supernatural occurrences don’t exist, they’re very unsure how to handle the situation. Forzen is laid back and bored over the whole thing. She’s just happy he gets a free living space and unlimited pizza and textbooks at his disposal. The government asked what he wanted to graduate in, and he never ever elaborated.

He mostly wears baggy t-shirts and jeans, sometimes cargo pants. Dull colors or funny phrases.

- Indestructibility (this greatly frightens the government, especially after he denied wanting to fight for their military)

Darnold

They/He/She Genderfluid Asexual Demiromantic

Darnold is from an unknown AU. Maybe. They either remember and don’t want to talk about it, or don’t care. She very quickly adapts to the new place and the science team welcomed him into their apartment. He very much enjoys his place in the cafe, able to experiment and mix flavors and sweet voice combinations in his lab. Tommy tried to help gather sweet voice, but he’s not good enough at it himself, and Sunkist wouldn’t listen. So Darnold has to stock up on the sporadic times Benrey returns. They enjoy flying kites and playing TF2 in their spare time.

Their favorite outfit is sweater vests and she enjoys darker warm colors, like maroon and purple. She collects various bow ties.

Sunkist

She/He/It

No one knows where Sunkist came from because, well, she can’t speak. As he is the perfect dog, he doesn’t shed, and is allowed to freely roam the cafe, or wherever else she’d like to wander off to. As the mascot, it is well beloved by the community. It can change his form from a flat (and slightly glowing and transparent) png to a human-sized dog at will. Very quickly bonded with Tommy and became a support when he was struggling with the situation. It cares for everyone on the science team, regardless of whether it listens to their demands or not.

Sometimes wears bandanas, collars, or bows with soda motifs. No one gifted it to her, she just appears with them sometimes and they may change when you blink . . .

Penelope (daughter of Pinocchio and Alice) Penelope always smells of wood and paint, and always has fresh sawdust on her apron from carving; she is very artsy and loves sketching and painting, as well as reading books. (Her grandfather Geppetto taught her how to carve when she was younger, and now she loves creating and making things.)

She is much like her father (happy-go-lucky, etc), but she is also mature for her age. She is 14 years old.

She is also a dancer (mainly dances ballet, contemporary, and tap).

Her nickname is Ellie, and her favorite snack is warm cinnamon rolls.

Sophie (daughter of Stromboli) Sophie is a dancer and a gymnast, and loves performing. Like her father, she has a bit of a temper when she gets angry (but not as much).

Chrissy (daughter of the Coachman) Chrissy and her father are almost polar opposites. She owns a small whip that her father has gifted her, she has vowed to herself never to use it to beat animals (she loves animals and would never treat them cruelly); she only uses it to practice whip-cracking tricks. Her eyes sometimes flash green when she's angry.

She is 15 years old.

Chrissy loves animals; she has taken in a baby donkey, which she has named Posy. (the Coachman was going to leave Posy to die, as he didn't need any more donkeys at the moment; Chrissy started to care for her)

Evelyn (daughter of The Blue Fairy) Evelyn is half-fairy, half-human. She is a rebel, and very sarcastic. She provides the dark humor in her friend group. Evelyn is very kind and supportive of her friends, despite being sarcastic. Despite magic not being used in Auradon, she uses her magic often; using her wand made from sapphire.

She is 16 years old, and loves black leather clothing (she thinks they make her look tough and cool); she also loves chocolate

Petunia is the young daughter of Lampwick and Tiger Lily. She loves playing pool (and even has a custom billiards cue stick that her father bought for her) and is really good at it. She loves comfy clothes, and her favorite drink is warm ginger tea with honey and lemon.

Petunia's favorite color is lavender, and her second favorite color is green. She loves floral scented candles. (I apologize, I could only find a darker lavender in Gacha and not a lighter one lol)

Princeton Hoffman (son of Captain Phillip Hoffman/The Nutcracker and Clara Stahlbaum) He is a ballet dancer, and is on the tourney team; he is very strong physically, and athletic. Once Princeton becomes close friends with someone, he becomes very protective of them.

Got any Octavia headcanons? Just in general 🦉🌠

Now, I don't have a ton since Octavia isn't one of my favorite characters and doesn't have a ton of screentime, but I did have a few, so ask and you shall receive!

(Octavia headcanons I think are pretty accurate)

Octavia is super active on Sinstagram, but unlike most girls her age, she mostly posts photography and sometimes she tries silly trends or makeup looks with her dad.

Despite her original anger at her father’s affair, Octavia grows to love Blitz as if he were a second dad.

Via practices magic often with tutors or in school, but she prefers learning with her dad because she enjoys the bonding time it gives them. When her parents split up, one of the hardest things for her was having her studies with her dad cut in half.

Her favorite snack is roasted marshmallows (sometimes smores). She often just gets a bag of marshmallows and sits in her room, using her pyrokinesis to roast them while she watches horror movies in bed.

While she is asexual, Octavia is biromantic. Stolas and Loona are the only two people who she's felt comfortable enough to come out to.

She loves to read, mostly thrillers and mystery novels. She plans to have enough books to rival her father's plant collection.

After her trip to the human world in “Seeing Stars”, Loona and Octavia made it a point to have coffee at least once a month. While the two usually have coffee and walk around Stylish Occult and other hell stores similar to it, they use the time to vent about their fathers, school/work, unbeknownst to their fathers, the girls sometimes sneak to earth to take in the sights there.

Loona is the first person she tried drugs or alcohol with. Via really wanted to try something rebellious so Loona supervised her while smoked a little weed and took a few shots.... then spent the rest of the night holding her hair while she puked and trying to bring down the paranoia levels. They both agreed Stolas and Blitz never needed to know that happened.

Stella is afraid of reptiles…. Unbeknownst to her, Stolas has let their daughter keep a pet snake that she found in his garden. Via has had this snake for almost 4 years without her mother's knowledge and it's name is Starlight.

Octavia still hasn’t mastered transforming into her full demon form, but she is more interested in learning to transform into her human form since she’s seen both of her parents and Loona do it before and she thinks they all look quite pretty in their human forms… Since she struggles with finding anything attractive about herself now, she wonders if she’ll be as pretty as them.

Octavia is extremely musically inclined and despite her mother hating it, Via taught herself to play the drums.

Via visits her father in the hospital every day. He makes her promise to take care of his plants and she actually ends up really enjoying tending to the garden, she even talks to the plants and plays music for them to try to cheer them up since, much like her, they're also feeling a bit lost without Stolas at home.

After taking up journaling, she took up writing poetry and she sometimes performs it at open mic nights. She’s never told anyone, but she really enjoys it and despite her demeanor, she’s found that her mental health has improved tremendously since she started writing.

Collects interesting/weird taxidermy and gives each one a unique and personality.

Up until her first appearance in Helluva Boss, Octavia actually did the most to earn her mother’s affection. She stopped in hopes that the drastic change in behavior would catch her mother’s attention… When it didn’t, she slowly started learning who she was apart from her parents and came up with her current personality and aesthetic.

Loves spice. Like could care less about cookies or cupcakes most of the time but wants to eat the hottest pepper she can find like a tic tac.

Very much the type who wants to advocate for those who are struggling. Since she can’t do much to make hell better, once she’s old enough and learns to shift into her human form, she totally comes to the human realm to help with protests for causes she believes in.

Speaks in nothing but song lyrics sometimes. No reason, just does it.

More topics I need to think about for Paper Mario: Featuring Eggman From The Devil May Cry Series™ (title pending). There's not much practical reason to wonder all of this out loud in a post, but eh, I like to share my thought process on these things. :)

- Complimentary roles for the mainline characters. Bowser will be the hardest one, as Eggman will cause trouble for him as well (there's only room for one motherfucker in this world, and it's the one that doesn't even come from here, so says Eggy), but I don't want to cheaply shit on Bowser too much in order to artificially elevate my preferred villain, and as I said before, I also want to avoid the predictable route of having him team up with Mario in favor of a more original solution. Peach is another one that'll take some thinking: not that being kidnapped automatically makes her bad or useless, as PM64 and TTYD themselves prove otherwise, but I can't think of a sufficiently juicy reason for why Eggman would bother to kidnap her aside from maybe to piss off Mario and/or Bowser, and even then, I think I could come up with something more unique that achieves that reaction. Plus, Eggman kidnapping a princess would probably invite '06 comparisons, so y'know...

- Paper continuity. It's no secret that all the post-TTYD installments veered off into wildly different directions - and I don't just mean the gameplay - that regardless of whether you like them or not, you could say they're somewhat incompatible with the first two in terms of overall feel. Obviously, the intended feel for this fic is for it to be similar in spirit to PM64 and TTYD, so I'm wondering how to handle potential nods to games that have very little in common outside of the paper aesthetic, and making them coherent and in-line with the 64/TTYD world so to speak. (As a random side-note, not liking Super Paper Mario and its story - to the point where I actually prefer Origami King over it despite its Sticker Star/Colour Splash elements - might be my most controversial Mario opinion.)

- Characters that have inconsistent presence or no presence at all. Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings may be considered mainstays in the main franchise, but they never made an appearance in the Paper games until much later, so in order to preserve the PM64/TTYD feel, I might have to exclude them. It helps that I've never been too crazy over them anyway. The same applies to Kamek, as I'm likely to use Kammy instead for the same reasons. The real question is what to do with characters like Wario and Donkey Kong, who have had no presence in the Paper games whatsoever beyond some indirect nods, but are fun and distinct enough that it might be worth incorporating them in some way, assuming I can think of anything for them to do that can tie into the overarching Mario VS Eggman conflict.

- Partners. Since Vivian will be returning ("Oh look, a purple girl with pyrokinesis, never heard THAT one before"), do I make the rest of the partners brand new? Or do I take some from PM64 and some from TTYD to make it look slightly less biased? :^)

- References to other Mario works. This isn't much of a problem regarding the mainline titles and certain spinoffs like Mario Kart, since they're famously fast and loose with the idea of a consistent and ongoing narrative ("MARIO, HOW DARE YOU CALL IAN FLYNN A BAD WRITER ON MY FAMILY VACATION"), but since this is Paper Mario we're talking about, what I'm wondering is whether it would come off as jarring if there were some small references on occasion to, say, the Mario & Luigi games for example.

- Not going overboard with Sonic references. Eggman could occasionally make brief allusions to characters and other stuff that's happened in the Sonic-verse, but since this is 90% a Mario fic, Mario fans will be the most likely readers should there be any. Not all of them are guaranteed to be as knowledgeable about Sonic, and while I certainly wouldn't want to treat the readers as morons, at the same time, they shouldn't be forced to read up on all the lore of a different franchise that they might not even be into in order to understand what's going on. Plus, keeping the Sonic side of things intentionally mysterious in this fic compliments the Mario-verse's perspective, and lack of familiarity with Eggman.

- And of course, just like with my Sonic works, I want to maintain as much of the official flavor as possible, despite the inherent premise sounding like it came straight out of 2005. Eggman suddenly dropping into the Mario world, and Mario and Co being forced to take care of him without Sonic and Co being there to assist them, would obviously never happen, but if it did, how would it play out in a way that stays reasonably true to the spirit of the source material? 𝐓𝐈𝐃𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐒:

my portrayal of lilith plays with the idea that, as created equal to man, lilith is a narrative foil to adam in that she is cut of the same cloth — she is unapologetically confident, arrogant, and narcissistic. she is also clever & cunning, the snake hidden betwixt roses.

she is not all evil. she is not all good. she fights for the causes she believes in ( the liberation of women, the safety of her citizens, etc. ) but makes no apology for her aloof demeanour. she holds a lot of anger ... at adam, at god, at lucifer, for having failed her when it mattered.

she loved lucifer, and their family, though perhaps not in the way he wanted. she didn't feel satisfied in that role.

my main verse is based on the presumption that, before she was taken to heaven, lilith was plotting a rebellion against heaven, making political moves behind lucifer's back to wage war against the angels and put an end to heaven's tyranny.

Character Bases

Violet’s facial structure and eye shape are reminiscent of Total Drama’s Courtney, but I don’t have that kind of space.

Development

Violet, formerly Tracy, starts out with a more pinkish-purplish hue. Her earliest design has pigtails rather than a ponytail. Her personality emerges quickly, but she’s far less bombastic and articulated than usual. Throughout Rough Sketch the design grew more polished as she was increasingly written as the protagonist.

Right before Rough Sketch was canned to make way for the new continuity, Violet gained a more disheveled look. The series proper introduces her wedding ring, suit, choker, and more more gangly build. Her slight redesign flares her collar, changes her shirt, and gives her a build more believable of a “speedster” type of character, but otherwise remains the same.

History

Season One

Violet debuts in Welcome to Dullsville alongside the other five main characters. She’s the very first character to appear in this continuity, having apparently been fiddling with the camera’s controls until it begins broadcasting the episode. Throughout most of the early season, she’s largely seen overseeing the hiring of new employees and business procedures for ICT.

Formblende marks the start of the “The More Things Change” A-Plot in which Violet finds herself in Headspace while lucid dreaming. She stumbles upon the eponymous being seemingly overseeing the creation of Ingrid and Geneva, only to be justifiably disturbed when she comes across them in her house in reality.

Walk the Dog picks up roughly a day later as Coco raises her concerns over the seeming cosmic rewrites occurring. Violet is initially skeptical, but quickly relents when she remembers the events of the previous day.

In Violet and Scarlett, her next major role afterwards, Scarlet shows up at the Oobay-Monade household. Violet is excited to see her aunt, although very briefly annoyed to see she had somehow gotten in minor legal trouble. The episode immediately after, Sykie, has Violet return to Headspace, where she overhears Sykie and Formblende conversing. The former finds her out immediately and ends her dream, prompting her to go to Chloe to borrow a notebook.

After not having appeared in a while, Gordon reports Sky to her in Onward and Upward, the latter seeking a job. Violet accepts her, seeing a lot of herself in Sky. Traumedy has her learn more about who the Master Minds are, including the tidbit that she isn’t supposed to be in Headspace at all. She’s forcibly dragged back to consciousness and immediately reports her findings to Lyman, who suggests she uses her prior encounters to know when the next vision will come.

The Evils of Lies and Hate begins the season’s B-Plot, where she admits Landon into the company at his request. Her next appearance is Action Has Consequences in a meeting with Elroy about the collateral damage done by Chloe and Sylvester, which Violet seems annoyed to have to attend. This issue comes up again in Close Encounters for the Third Time when she stumbles upon the aftermath of Sylvester’s rampage.

Olive was born into Greed Town, he was like the other demons. He became the greatest performer and was famous for profit and others. However when he saw a portal that leads to the living world, he goes there which takes him to the middle of Nowhere. He then meets Courage though he is afraid by his appearance, Olive takes a liking to the dog. Olive doesn't show any signs of harming or using Courage to get his own ways but instead, likes to spend some time with him.

When Muriel and Courage are kidnapped and tortured by their enemies and the Sin Clowns, Olive came to their rescue. The Sin Clowns knew Olive, especially Greed/Millerd. The two were mortal enemies and with Olive killing him and his gang by drenching them in holy water.

He never wanted to return to his world and he wanted a new start in life. Courage(with help from his cherub friend Geo) help him have a change of heart

Despite the two being opposites(demon and sheep cherub hybrid), Olive appears to be on good terms with Geo. Geo even helps him change his ways

Olive can transforms into his full demon form, it only happens whenever he feels infuriated at something

He hasn't met anyone Courage knows like Muriel, Eustace or Computer, but if he met the three; he would get along with Muriel and refers to her as Courage's mother, he would find Eustace as a jerk and he finds Computer interesting even though he(Computer) is a jerk to Courage

His face is heavily burnt by acid when an another clown demon throws a bucket of acid at him, though his tail and hair luckily didn't get burnt(since his hat covered his hair)

If he also meets Charlie the Mouse, Bunny, Kitty and Shirley the Medium; he would get along well with Bunny, Kitty and Charlie and he is alright with Shirley, although he does say to himself that he finds her a bit intimidating
