Today we had a patch of sunshine at work! We had dog training earlier and Sif was so good. My trainer made food and put it on a low table, and Sif left it alone as we walked around the table. She stayed by my side while I sat at the table even with an insane amount of distractions. We were told that we’re going to start training for our Public Access test at the end of July. The heartwarming story of Nick Bailey and his German Shepherd Service Dog, Abel: Nick Bailey is an Iraq war veteran who served for 12.5 years. Bailey was seriously injured on duty. One of his biggest comforts has been his faithful friend, Abel. Nick approached organizations who claimed to help veterans to train service animals. These organizations were deceptive and lacked results. An 8-year old girl volunteered to raise funds for Abel's training by starting a lemonade stand. The lemonade stand received attention and support and helped to bring awareness to Nick’s goals. Nick and his wife went through many trainers, who did not produce results, and in some cases made Abel worse. “Your Dog Guru” from previous YouTube videos and their master trainer, Jimi Livshitz, arranged an evaluation. Nick and Abel booked a flight to Arizona, and Abel stayed for 5 months for rehabilitation and training. This is the face of the sweet girl who has started tasking almost all the time. It’s only the one task that we’ve been working on (bouncing anxiety; next is deep pressure therapy) but she’s started doing it everywhere, without me realizing I’m doing the leg bouncing. Today she got up from her nap, looked at me, and got up to do her task even though she’s technically not on duty right now. Today is Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Day which commemorates the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, guaranteeing equal opportunity for people with disabilities.

Let’s real talk for a second. Our humans love to take us everywhere because many of us make life more enjoyable and they want the best for us. This is totally understandable and a good thing!

However, some of our human frens need their pups to be with them in order to get through their daily life in a safe manner. Often times they wait on long lists and pay hefty fees to find a Service Dog that can perform tasks such as helping them cross the street or alerting them to a medical or psychiatric need. These pups have very important jobs.

Some pups, like me, are Emotional Support Animals (ESA), which means that we have housing rights and airline benefits to help our humans. This does not mean that we can go anywhere our humans want to take us nor does it give us a license to bad behavior.

Some day I want to be a Therapy Dog. After training, I will be able to go to places like hospitals, airports, schools, disaster areas, and nursing homes to help others by providing affection, comfort, and support.

To protect those humans who need a Service Dog, it is important for our humans to understand the differences and to not try to play the system just to bring us with them wherever they want to take us.

Luckily for me, there are so many dog friendly things to do here in LA and my human has found lots of other dog owners to make plans with.

Is your human familiar with the difference between Service Dog, Emotional Support Animals, and Therapy Dogs? If not, I encourage you to have them look into it more from reputable sources like the ADA itself.
