Nine Lives and One Scar

For as young as he might be, the years haven't been too kind to Ebengir. This brown shorthair is marked with stripes and whiskers, but the part people always point out is the wraps of bandaging around his head, culminating in a cover for a bloody mess that stains through over his left eye. The wound doesn't bother him though, and the wide-eyed do-gooder always appears ignorant to the judging words, preferring to help his neighbors the best he can, just as he always has. It's his firm belief that by helping those in need, he can secure a brighter future for everyone, an ambition you see in his good eye, and that tends to rub off on the friends around him. Despite how approachable he is, and how much he likes to chat with others, some of his social encounters can end more awkward than others due to him completely missing some social cues, especially the flirting kind. Another way such exchanges can go wrong is when people ask about his eye. Sure, he'll tell you the story of how he lost it, but who can say if the story he told you is true? Certainly not the others who all heard a different version entirely. One thing that is more consistent than the rest in these stories, though, is how he served as a soldier in a war that the world seems to have forgotten about. He tells it like he fought for the future of everyone, and maybe his fight isn't over...

Honestly, I gotta say it. The more I think about Pops/the Boss, the more he pisses me off. Like, in the whopping three panels he featured in, and his long-winded run of one minute and thirty seconds (if that) of screen-time, he enacted the quite virtuous deeds of:

One: handing his granddaughter off to someone he knows to be violent and extreme, probably partially in the pretentious pretense of “teaching him empathy” since he never fucking bothered to do that himself, and probably couldn’t have been bothered to half-assedly raise another kid, either.

Two: doing nothing to genuinely help the person with violent and apathetic tendencies (as a child or adult), who blatantly exhibits multiple symptoms of multiple mental disorders/issues, and has since childhood.

Three: never teaching the child he took in from the streets (who’d clearly faced some form of mistreatment before being in his care) to not feel indebted to him for helping them/not feel like kindness has to always have an ulterior motive. Never even bothered to try asking/figuring out why this child even had that mindset in the first place, or maybe even was the one who actually nursed that mindset into full fruition. Never taking the time to actually sit them down and explain things to them, ask them why they think the way they do, try to get them any sort of actual help, never seemed to actually consider their perspective on anything. All that, and then he wondered why the child grew up to be so horrifically apathetic and violent, after they’d been showcasing those behaviors for literal years, and he’d done nothing about it outside of a hollow reprimand. Woah, crazy, ain’t it. Really came out of left-field, that one.

Four: deciding the best course of action when Chisaki showed his most concerning and dangerous behaviors yet, was to just… cast him out. Onto the streets again. Completely unsupervised?? Like, dude. What.

Five: having the goddamn nerve to act surprised when the child he brought up (in the yakuza) doesn’t care much about human lives and only searches for ways to make them useful—even at the detriment/harm of them, AKA the very mindset he willfully ignored and at least semi-encouraged in them.

Ahh.. but alas, what can we expect from a Yakuza boss who was disowned by his own daughter? :)

So I have been musing all night on a variety of things and one of those things is that Helena Diaz is going to have a stroke and it will be the thing that leads to her redemption!

Hear me out. I don’t think Helena deserves redemption for her behaviour, but ultimately she’s going to get it because that is what this show does with the parents of our mains. The reason they all get redemption is because the things they need redeeming for are aspects of their children’s journeys on the show - so they are mirrors and allegories for the things our mains need to figure out and work on about themselves.

I could write a whole meta about this concept but I don’t really have the capacity right now.

But I will talk about the Diaz’s. Ramon and his heart issues, his triple bypass, was all about Eddie’s own heart issues. Ramon got his redemption because Eddie was able to resolve at least a good chunk of his heart issues. The Ramon aspect isn’t yet fully resolved - we were shown improvements (Eddie talking to him via video call etc) but it’s flared back up again with Helena and Ramon coming to take Chris back to Texas.

So Ramon is the metaphor for Eddie’s heart.

Helena will get her redemption because she is a representation of Eddie’s head - of his mind and ultimately Eddie will figure out his mind and that will mean redemption for Helena.

And that is why I think her having a stroke is where we’re headed. A stroke is an interruption of blood flow to the brain and it can impact any aspect of a person - speech, mental capacity, mobility etc etc. It stems from the heart and the impact on a person can be massively reduced by early medical intervention - the earlier the intervention the better the chances of its effects being very limited.

If all things heart related were resolved and fixed, Ramon would’ve stood up for Eddie and pushed for Chris to only go to Texas for a few weeks at most, for Chris and Eddie to talk - to go to therapy etc together to resolve things. But he didn’t and that is the flow of blood from the heart to the brain being interrupted.

A stroke is the head being affected by the heart. Eddie having done some work on his heart allowed him to get to where he is, but he’s still not resolved all his heart issues - in much the same way that things are not There are still some aspects he needs to work on, and that is what is leading to

That is so representative of where Eddie is at in his journey - he is at this turning point - on his own and having to figure out who he is and who he wants to be. But the longer it takes him to figure that out the greater the chances of lasting and damaging impact.

If he doesn’t figure things out - he runs the risk of never being able to repair things with Chris. If he doesn’t resolve the Shannon and divorce etc aspect of things, he’s running the risk of never being able to embrace love and relationships etc.

He’s at the point where he can still intervene early - there will be some damage (there already is) but he can limit that damage and recover.

So yeah Helena stroke as a metaphor for Eddie sorting out all the mental stuff he needs to sort out and how it would play into the heart metaphor and Ramon as part of that is where I’m at!!
