I gave Hawthorne fake nails today. With no tutorial to help me, I expected to crash and burn.
I did not. They are lovely.
Here are some notes on what I did, in case you want to attempt this yourself:
Before attempting this, I highly reccommend watching a few youtube tutorials on how to sculpt polygel over a nail form. It helps if you have knowledge of how to form gel nails.
I purchased a polygel nail kit for $20 off Amazon. It came with a curing light, a nail file, a brush, a spatula, slip solution, and tubes of polygel. I highly recommend this. I used everything in the kit, and it is much more expensive to buy everything separately. The only complaints in the reviews were that you get too small of an amount of polygel and slip solution, but if you are using this for dolls, this shouldn't be a problem.
You may want to replace the slip solution with 72% alcohol. It works the same way, is probably better for your doll than slip solution that is made for humans, but I did use the slip solution in the kit.
The first thing I tried was making nail forms out of Scotch tape, but instead of cutting a hole for the nail like a traditional nail form (the hole would be too small) I chose to cover the nail and sculpt with the polygel on top of them, then try glueing them onto the nail afterward. This would probably work with more practice, but it was much more effective just to sculpt right on top of the nail without a form. With this method, you will not be able to make them very long, but they will be sturdy, stick well, and look pretty clean and smooth.
The only issue one might have is the way it looks from some angles, but I personally don't mind. I'll try and explain what I'm saying:
Tumblr media
I sculpted these without a form, and as a result, from some angles, the nails can look heavy and round. I chalk this up to it being simply unrealistic to expect paper-thin sculpting on a pair of tiny hands.
Personally, I don't think this shape is a downside at all. I've seen a lot of long-nailed BJD hands that have the nails sort of... "molded" into the finger, probably for ease of casting?? But probably also because they won't snag on clothes and break. If I hadn't made the nails this shape, it'd be a lot easier to break them.
However, the reason I am embarking on this journey of doll manicuring is because I have a gyaru boy on the way, who I want to give long, ridiculous, sparkly pink nails, covered in gems. This formless method will not work for him. For this, I am going to make long tips out of plastic from straws, glue them on, and build the polygel on top. In order to reinforce it, however, I will be adding more polygel underneath, because I do *not* want these to break. This is definitely going to be "hands-off when taking off his shirt" situation.
Polygel... is sticky. I had to cure these nails multiple times. It's hard to get a small enough bead on the tip of the nail because polygel is meant to be applied in one large bead on a human nail. It takes a lot of slip solution to sculpt it, and using too much slip solution can make the curing go too sticky. It takes a little practice, but the nails look great regardless. Didn't even have to redo any.
My work process was as follows:
1. Sculpt the nails
2. Cure 30 seconds
3. Add another layer of gel to get them a bit longer and stronger
4. Cure 1 minute
5. Clean off the stickiness on top of the nails with alcohol or acetone
6. File the tops of the nails AND the bottoms (with respiratory protection PLEASE) and shape them how you like
7. Gel topcoat. Very important.
8. Cure 30 seconds.
After that, I just cleaned off whatever stickiness the polygel left behind with acetone.
This was my first attempt at this, but I always have trouble finding tutorials about this that I understand. I don't think I can fully be an authority on how to make these after one set, but I hope these notes help anyone looking to attempt this! All it took was a kit and about an hour, not even.

upgrading ur nail game⋆.ೃ࿔*:・💅🏽💕
Tumblr media
when ur nails are done, ur accessories look better, u FEEL better and u look more put together. when i get manicures it helps me to feel like i have everything together even if at the time i dont. SO today im going to be talking about how u can upgrade ur nail game…💬🎀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUILD UR SKILL SET ;
theres nothing wrong with going to ur local nail salons or going to ur favorite nail tech, in fact i encourage it! #support small business. however i also encourage u to build ur own skill set.
what i mean by this is learn how to take proper care of ur nails and keep them strong, how to do a basic nail polish coat etc. plus it can be rly expensive having to constantly pay money to get ur nails done when u can learn a thing or two on ur own at home.
to figure out what u have to learn, take a look at what u love the most. for me i cannot RESIST a good french tip. like i LOVE it. so i would look up youtube tutorials and practice doing french tips on my own hands. figure out what u like and then figure out how to do it.
SOME RESOURCES FOR THE NAIL GIRLIES ;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
GEL POLISH ;
i prefer gel polish over regular nail polish because the shine that it leaves on ur nails is just TO DIE for. i like it better then nail polish cuz nail polish takes a while to dry, it could get smudged or ur hair could get caught in it. plus its rly hard to get a nice finish with regular nail polish so gel polish is a billion times better in my opinion.
in order to dry the gel polish u dry it with a UV lamp which u can find on amazon and then ur all done!~ it takes so fast and u dont have to worry about smudging the polish or anything…💬🎀
ACRYLICS AND POLYGEL ;
in my humble opinion i feel like acrylic nails are rly heavy on my fingers and when i get acrylics done, the nail salon i frequent kind of buffs my nail too much so acrylics aren't my favorite thing in the world. plus it causes a lot of damage so i dont recommend. polygel however has a kind of toothpaste consistency and its a lot more light weight then acrylics.

hello i saw one of ur stamping plate demos on insta and u mentioned that u started out watching nail art vids- do you have any favorite nail art creators u could rec??
simplynailogical doesnt really do nail art anymore (she’s transitioned into being your garden variety goof-off youtuber but for what it’s worth she’s the only garden variety goof-off youtuber i can stand) but i do like her no-nonsense attitude on nail care + nail products -- and the fact that she sticks with natural nails which is my wheelhouse too -- and you can still go back and watch all her old stuff which is usually simple enough to do at home and not as cutesy as a lot of other nail art vloggers’ stuff
nailcareereducation almost exclusively focuses on stuff like elaborate acrylic which i don’t have any interest in for myself but the videos are still really really lovely to watch from an artistic standpoint. also she’s super endearing
gabby morris (not to be confused with gabby morrison!) is one of my absolute favorites, she does really beautiful, classy nail art that’s all ACTUALLY easily replicable without too much specialized equipment (i love stamping but watching videos that are heavy on stamping/nail vinyls+stencils can feel like you’re watching a shopping list, not a tutorial.) most of it is stuff that’s actually subtle enough to be wearable if you have an office job/etc whereas a lot of other nail art tutorials can be stuff that’s fun but too flashy/cutesy for a lot of situations
longhairprettynails does mostly product testing but she does have some really creative + fun nail art -- again mostly in acrylic/polygel/etc so not stuff im ever going to replicate but it’s really fun to watch. also, like suzie nailcareereducation, she’s just cute as a button
guylene 325 does a LOT of demoing of maniology stamping plates (which is my preferred stamping supplier) and often does a lot of creative stuff with stamping that i haven’t seen in other tutorials. her reviews are really blunt and honest, too, which i appreciate. if you want to see someone do a bunch of stamping and test a bunch of products and absolutely tell you what the hell she thinks about them, guylene’s your girl
also, most nail art suppliers -- bornpretty, maniology, etc -- have their own youtube channels where you can watch curated demos of their products.
one thing i will ask people to be mindful of -- try to support independent artists whenever possible rather than compilations of stolen content thrown together by content farms. stuff with titles like “BEST NEW NAIL ART 2018 CUTE SIMPLE NAILS IDEAS COMPILATION 20 COOL IDEAS EASY NAIL ART” that’s like 20 minutes of stuff ripped off of instagram set to royalty free edm... sucks, in my opinion, even though i admit it’s how i first stumbled on nail art and what i just kind of mindlessly watched for a while. but once i became more aware of content farms i switched over to trying to be more mindful and watch content only from the ppl who originally posted it. (also a lot of independent creators are starting to fill that demand by making their own long compilations of their own stuff, anyway -- gabby morris does, for example!)
SORRY THAT THIS GOT SO LONG LMAO nail art has been a quiet passion of mine for a couple years now and now that i can finally DO my own nails i’ve just gone completely off the shits and i’ll talk about it all day long if i don’t stop myself

I did val's nails last night.
stole my husband's straw from wendy's, cut it into little nail tips, glued that on, and went over the top with polygel and a gel topcoat. this has been the best method for making long doll nails i have used so far.
for shorter nails, you really don't need tips from a straw, as scene on hawthorne. these things are solid, gorgeous, and not coming off.
Tumblr media
val's nails are a bit more delicate, but I had to make them ridiculously long because it's very out of character for him to not have long nails. val is naked without claws, chest hair, and big poofy hair.
for my next experiment, i will be creating nail forms out by sculpting an epoxy "bed" and seeing if i can sculpt with polygel directly onto it to create nails on top. this would be ideal so I do not have to rely on the straws sticking to the hand. polygel is Much sturdier on its own.

What products do you use on your nails? I’m new to it and don’t know much. Thank you
TLDR; hard gel (different than polygel)
i’m picky about my nails lol i’m really bad with cuticle picking/biting to the point where they bleed, so i usually have to keep my nails long and have some kind of paint on them to keep myself from doing it. i’ve tried a lot products to help myself with this: i tried getting acrylic one time and i hated it because it wrecked my nail beds; i got dip polish one time and i hated it as well for the same reason as the acrylic; i bought gel polishes and a lamp, but my natural nails are too weak for just gel polish because they break so easily
the best solution i have found is hard gel! as i said, i like to keep my nails moderately long, but i don’t personally like extensions, so the best thing for me is hard gel, which is a gel that adheres to your nail bed and hardens with an LED lamp. it doesn’t chip, lift, break, peel, nothing. it stays on for weeks and weeks without budging, and you only really need to rebase it when it grows out, rather than replacing it entirely each time. that’s how durable it is. it allows you to keep your own natural nails healthy and also keeps the nails strong enough to grow out to whatever length you want. i’ve been able to maintain my nail length at 2-3cm without any breakage since i started using hard gel on them in august
if you’re looking for a dependable brand of hard gel to try, i recommend the brand IBD, which you can find on amazon! you have to get the gel and also the bonding agent from that brand. if you don’t get the bonding agent also, it won’t adhere to your nails very well at all and will peel back like regular gel polish does sometimes. you also need an e-file to file the gel to your preferred shape and thickness after it hardens, and a regular nail brush to apply the gel. after applying the hard gel, you can use whatever kind of product you want for the color, though i think most people prefer to use a gel polish on top. totally up to you there since you have to file the color off when you want to change it, regardless of which product you choose
also i’m not a nail tech, so i don’t have tips or specifics about application technique, but i know there are many tutorials on youtube :))) hope this is helpful & good luck on your nail journey!!
