So I'm allergic to something in clear nail polish and I'm trying to narrow down what. I have a topcoat that doesn't cause a reaction, and a base/topcoat combo that does.

I have listed their ingredients in a spreadsheet and crossed off ingredients not present in the allergen. I've also crossed off ingredients that are in both -- thankfully the most common ingredients in all clear nail polishes seem are also present in the one that's not a trigger, so I'm not completely out of luck.

I have bought two more base coats. One I'm pretty sure has caused allergic reactions in the past but I'm trying it again For Science, and another one I've never tried.

So I've got four clear polishes in total and I'm going to try #3 today.

POLISH #1 -- Reacted

POLISH #2 -- No reaction

POLISH #3 -- Untested

POLISH #4 -- Previous reactions, will test again.

Based off the data for #1 and #2, however, I've narrowed it down to the following ingredients:

#T17286056 -- Present only in #1 (allergenic), so if I react to any other polishes this will be ruled out (which I'm expecting #4 not to be, so my hypothesis is that it's not this one).

Acetyl Nethionine -- Present only in #1 (see above)

Acetyl Tributyl Citrate -- Present only in #1 (see above) (however, it is present in a fifth nail polish I want to try).

Adipic Acid -- Present in every nail polish except for #2 (non-allergenic), so if it's this one all other nail polishes will get a reaction.

Benzophenone-3 -- Present only in #1.

Fumaric Acid -- Present only in #1.

Glycols Copolymer -- Present only in #1.

Pthalic Acid -- Present only in #1.

Pthalic Anhydride -- Present only in #1, but it's present in the fifth polish I haven't been able to get a hold of yet.

Tricyclodecane Dimethanol Copolymer -- Present only in #1.

Trimellitic Anhydride -- Present in every polish except for #2 (non allergenic).

Basically if I get a reaction from polish #3 which I'm trying today, then that rules a lot out because it doesn't have a lot of stuff that's in #1. But if my allergy is to trimellitic anhydride or adipic acid, then I'll react to everything because it's only not in 2.

Anyway this allergy has haunted me for years and I was going to go to a dermatologist and see if I could get tested then realised. actually. it would cost way less money to just buy a lot of base coats and whip out a spreadsheet and do this at home lol
