NYPD officers raided encampments at schools like Columbia University and the City College of New York, arresting close to 200 protesters in just one day. The police raid at Columbia in late April was the first on-campus mass arrest in 50 years, with police using riot gear and military-grade weapons against mostly peaceful protesters. ⁣

While Gaza solidarity encampments have been frequently targeted with violence by police and pro-Israel agitators – and over 2,200 people have been arrested – a study found that out of over 550 Gaza protests at U.S. universities, 97% have been peaceful. ⁣

At the end of 2005, the FBI opened a new phase of its assault on earth and animal liberation movements — known as the Green Scare — with the arrests and indictments of a large number of activists. This offensive, which they dubbed Operation Backfire, was intended to obtain convictions for many of the unsolved Earth Liberation Front arsons of the preceding ten years — but more so, to have a chilling effect on all ecological direct action.

In this analysis, originally published in Rolling Thunder in 2008, we review everything we can learn from the Operation Backfire cases, with the intention of passing on the lessons for the next generation of environmental activists.

does "i wont speak without a lawyer present" still apply in other countries besides the us? (specifically the netherlands) or is the 'script' different?

I only know the rules for the Netherlands: We don't have the ridiculous miranda rights song and dance you have to do with the magic phrases to make sure the cops won't argue that you want a lawyer-dog, but otherwise yes. You have the right to be silent, you have the right to speak to a lawyer before your first official interrogation, etc. When you've been arrested never speak to the cops about what happened, why you were there, who you were there with, or anything. They'll try to be chatty and friendly and pretend that they might release you if you explain yourself, but they're just gathering information to fuck you with. Just shut up, or tell them no comment, or say "Ik beroep me op mijn Zwijgrecht" (I'm using my right to be silent). Dont worry, you dont have to attempt to say that in Dutch if you dont speak it.
