i saw a couple edits on tiktok of mcspirk to soldier poet king and like. i’m not putting anyone on blast but good lord some of those choices made my head hurt. it’s taken me a couple days to synthesize my reasoning for the superior choice (as pictured above), but here goes:

the problem with assigning characters to soldier poet king comes when you take it at face value, flattening the paradigm to angry-sad-tired or violent-artsy-authoritative. if we want to get down to the root of it, the song is based on the threefold office of christ as priest (soldier), prophet (poet), and king. like i’m not christian, but on a textual level it gives us context: the concept that as prophet jesus gave us counsel and words of wisdom, as priest he sacrificed himself to redeem us, and as king he provides for, defends, and forgives us

maybe the most famous priest/prophet/king (& thus soldier/poet/king) allegory in all of literature is frodo, gandalf, and aragorn. frodo bears the burden, though he wishes he did not need to; gandalf offers words of wisdom and mercy; aragorn is a born leader, on the front lines with sword in hand, ready to die with his men if he must

KING: capt. james t. kirk is the easiest one to place. it is a burden and a privilege, an honor and a horror to have the lives of so many depend upon you to make the right call under fire. he makes the call. he leads the landing parties, he puts himself at the head of the charge because by god he is not about to send his men into a battle he wouldn’t fight himself. he leads—with heart when he can, steel when he must—and people follow him. bones and spock are always right behind because they believe in what he believes in, and more than that they believe in him

your average high-achieving vulcan, probably on the path to kolinahr, commits their lifetime to the pursuit of knowledge at the vulcan science academy. it’s a measured, rational decision. a controlled environment, where there will never be any logical reason to resort to violence

spock joins starfleet

he joins starfleet, and pursues knowledge in the vast unknowable universe. there is reason for violence, frequently. and sure, the purpose of their mission is peaceful. it’s true that spock would rather resolution be reached without force. but a soldier needs not want to be a soldier. he only needs go to war

when it comes down to blows, he will match them. he makes the sacrifice play, jumps on the grenade, goes into the radiation-soaked engineering room alone. it’s only logical, after all

spock is there to pick apart the universe, unravel the threads of logic until it all makes sense. bones is there to stitch it up. kirk is the hand that holds it all steady, the gravitational field that binds the people of the enterprise to their purpose. soldier-poet-king, commander-doctor-captain. it’s a story old as dirt, and we’ll keep telling it, i think

thinking about that one post that frames girlhood as a story full of revisions, and how klingons don't always stick to the full truth when they're telling a story- it's more about conveying the emotion of it. b'elanna says she spent time at the monastery on boreth but she doesn't speak klingon, she reads the paq'batlh in the original klingon script and she translates it perfectly when its necessary but claims she only speaks a few sentences

thinking about how klingons are called natural poets, and how depending on when you ask her starfleet either expelled her or she quit, and when she talks about her dad she's said he left when she was 5, and when she was 6, and she was 11 or 12 years old when he organized the camping trip that culminated in him leaving her and her mother twelve days later

for the ship ask, since I didn't go with them: B'elanna and Seven?

I have to be honest I hadn't really thought about them too much until I saw some B7 posts. They interact so rarely :(

But the more I thought about them, and the more posts I read - I'm sorry I know I should link them but I'm not sure I reblogged them (I know, I'm mad at myself too) so they are long lost and tumblr search is garbage. Anyway, it just seemed to make sense.

They are outsiders - half Klingon, half Borg. Both struggle with that dual nature and that they don't fit. For B'elanna she's too human to be Klingon, but too Klingon to be human. I wonder sometimes how much of her famous "klingon temper" is performative, and more out of frustration than anything. One of the amazing metas I read talked about klingon courting, and how B'elanna was a poet (which is the role males take in klingon society).

As someone who has internalised a lot of societal bullshit, I feel like B'elanna doesn't accept herself. It's hard to say given when Voyager aired whether it was so heteronormative due to the time period, or if those attitudes do still have hold of parts of the Federation. Given how different B'elanna feels because of her heritage, I wonder if she didn't do any sort of self-analysis, and pushed away anything that didn't fit the very traditional mould, as she wants to be 'normal' (in her eyes) in one area. Hence clinging to her relationship with Tom even though it doesn't seem to make her happy. Like she doesn't think relationships should be happy.

Contrast this with Seven who as Borg I'd argue had no real concept of gender or sexuality - they were Borg and that's all that mattered. But her guide to all things 'human' was the Doctor who was very cis hetero in what he pushed on her. I'd say she tried to adapt, thinking what the Doctor said was the way, only to learn later she had some stuff to unlearn. That the world wasn't that rigid and she could make her own choices. That they weren't wrong - that there is no wrong, only preference.

I would love to explore a concept of how B'elanna and Seven could have worked while still on Voyager. They definitely had their moments. I love how B'elanna respected Seven enough to be honest. There was that exchange where B'elanna told Seven she was rude but it was without judgement. Or when they talked about going back to Earth and B'elanna pointed out as a Marquis she wouldn't be welcome either, aligning herself with Seven.

However, I feel that anything more than friendship with them is most likely to evolve post-return. We don't know I think for sure (possibly novels covered it, but I don't know how 'canon' they are?) what happened to B'elanna. I personally headcanon that she didn't rejoin StarFleet but that Tom did. Instead B'elanna moved into some kind of R&D engineering because she is brilliant. At the same time we know that Seven started drifting and ended up with the Fenris Rangers. I feel like B'elanna and Tom's marriage wouldn't survive the long-distance, the pressure from Tom's family, their different career goals etc. I think it's possible they had a second "let's stay together" child, and then realised they worked better as co-parents/friends.

Also I feel like B'elanna, away from Voyager, and faced with bringing up another part-klingon (or two), and as all good parents do wanting better for her kids, finally had the space and the inclination to do a little soul-searching. I think the Voyager crew maintained some sporadic contact. We know Harry gave Seven a model of Voyager. So B'elanna hearing Seven is in the sector and going "hey want to get drinks" is perfectly plausible. Not as a date, just as friends catching up, but then they talk (and drink) and they do have a lot in common. Going back to what I said at the start about not fitting in this world, not being any one thing, and so a foot in both camps and at home in none.

I can't see them as a "happy ever after" type romance. I feel it would be more like "sometimes girlfriends" as everytime they are on the same ship/planet they'd hook up. Not serious, and not exclusive, but over time it becomes perhaps one of the more stable and long-term relationships that either of them ever have. They don't live together, but if anything happens they know they can call, and the other will be there no questions asked.

So yeah I ship them.

Interesting Michael x Rayner fanfic:

So season 1 is canon. But in the background Rayner learns all he can about Quantum Entanglement and the quantum mechanics involved, along with its applications in biology and the effects on humans and aliens. Because of all the inexplicable intuition moments he has had with Michael while finding the progenitors tech. Episode 1 of season 6 is Rayner investigating and coming to terms on his own. Episode 2: Michael and Book go on a super dangerous away mission. Michael is dying and Rayner decides to act and show Michael the literally physical and scientific manifestation of his love. Like with the 3-4-1-4 and how he just KNEW because of Quantum Entanglement, now he just KNOWS. He feels the instant Michael is injured and starts to die. Without saying anything, Rayner transports himself directly to sickbay the moment he feels Michael starting to die. when She gets transported straight to sickbay, before Hugh has a chance to do anything Rayner already is healing her. When she’s stable Rayner transports back to the bridge to resume command. Being the professional military, warrior type first and the appreciative poet second, he’s not big on grand, dramatic artistic displays of love and public displays of affection. In that moment using the spooky and weird applications of quantum mechanics to biology seemed like the most logical thing to do. Adira, Tilly, and Book are too stunned to say anything after Rayner leaves. Stamets gets it because of course he does. Hugh gets it on a spiritual level that something unusual just happened. At Starfleet Academy all the quantum mechanics and related classes were not really the ones Rayner excelled at. He was more of the warrior and tactician type. That doesn’t mean he isn’t super intelligent. his strengths just lie in a different area. So when he found out about this whole quantum entanglement thing he had a crash course in Quantum mechanics to really understand what this was. Stamets can tell Rayner is a bit freaked out and out of his depth. So he decides to have a heart to heart conversation with Rayner. Hugh invites himself to act as a counsellor. In the beginning it’s very awkward but as they talk more the conversation becomes a lot less awkward. After this Hugh and Rayner actually become friends. Michael finds out that Rayner healed her and that opens up the whole quantum entanglement - soulmates- love conversation.

This is Vinra Arquiel! He is a 13-year-old boy living in the kingdom of Parvinos and he is a (kind of bad) poet. He gains pyrokinesis during his story and learns to control his fire magic while befriending people who live near the border of his kingdom. He is a kind, friendly and eager kid whose main flaw is his lack of confidence. My main inspirations for him are Aang, Steven Universe and Miles Morales. Vinra has a good relationship with his parents and he also learns to use his fire powers creatively as he doesn't like fighting.

This is Adriel Kelfade, an ascended self-insert who is now her own character, an original alien species set in the Star Trek universe. As an 'Icarussian', she has purple wings and can breathe in outer space. As her own character outside of her original role, she's the captain of a ship for Starfleet.

She's a bit stressed as a captain, and really wants to befriend her crew. She's one of the few members of her species in Starfleet, as the Icarussians are a group of space-travelling nomads with no home planet.

This is a future incarnation of the Doctor, who I have since fancasted as Rahul Kohli but wasn't considering when I drew these. This is the first part of the No Other Will Do series by Lelinor which got me into the Beverly x Picard ship so I'm excited to reread these and review them.

I just want to start this by saying the freaking set up for S3 of Picard is a complete butcher of the relationship between Beverly and Picard and I'm so glad that fan fic writers do it so much better

I love how vieament Picard is that he can't have a son like man's never considers the possibility until he is told it 100% and even then it isn't until Beverly is brought up that he accepts it

They way he reaches out to form a connection with his son through the starship models, like he just knew his son would love him the way he loved them 🥹

I love the idea that Beverly and Picard struggle to adjust to modern slow down life. Its pretty well established that Picard struggles with a homebound life and longs for the stars every time that he's planet bound. Beverly is different because we really haven't seen her planet bound (besides her leaving between S1 and S3, which doesn't get referenced at all), so seeing how she will interact to trying to live a normal life is interesting. I like the fear that she has being separated from her children especially with her motivation to flee for her children's safety (also side tangent but fuuuucck that plotline, I hate the idea that Beverly would completely flee from all the people that she cared about and depended on to keep her child safe, she knew the dangers of Starfleet life but still volunteered to bring Westly onto the enterprise, I get her anger about being constantly pulled back and forth by Picard and wanted something permanent but fleeing into total isolation and still putting him in some danger by doing her medical ship stuff, it just feel hypocritical and like poor writing)

Whole side tangent about Beverly leaving aside, I think the line "I will be able to protect mine, but I didn't know if I could protect yours" is a really good way of summarizing the complexity of Beverly's internal world
