So my OC for an original story heavily inspired by taboo on FX

MY James Delaney: ( Because names are NOT copyrighted material 😈)

full name: James Kelly Delaney. His mother was Irish and Horace was Scottish. He was sent off to the military at 15 because he was wild and untamable 😈. He went to Brazil and spent a year there. Then he shipped out to Africa and there was a mutiny and ship wreck. He spent 6 months there before he made his way up to Egypt and fell in with traders from the Ottoman Empire. He spent the next 8 1/2 years making a FORTUNE along the Silk Road. All over the Middle East and china. He was having a blast until his dad died and he came back to claim his inheritance and become a general menace. He spoke Spanish, Portugese and Arabic fluently. His bestie was a ner’do well Ottoman Sargent who had gotten out of the army and fell in with James to raise hell. James figured out that the Americans, British and East India Company wanted Nootka Sound. He decided to shop around for other offers and in a 3 way deal with Spain, Portugal, and the Dutch East India Company negotiated a mutually beneficial and very good contract deal. All three would get first dibs on the trade agreement and James gave them a 100 year lease that made him very rich and very powerful. The Spanish then made him a Duke.

His half sister: Zelda Annalise Delaney. 2 years younger than James. Her mother was Scottish. Also wild and very much like Merida from Brave. Also uncontrollable. Horace tried his best to break her spirit. She still married her abusive, awful husband. She was plotting to kill him long before James swept in at the funeral. When James came waltzing in she instantly got heart eyes and said yum. She has beautiful, long naturally wavy mermaid hair. Her untamable hair can roaring back to life. That night she killed her husband with a hat pin and played sad widow. 😈

James bought a manor house and started meeting up with Zelda at her house for loads of horizontal tango. Zelda took to learning Spanish, Portugese and Arabic so when her and James talked no one could understand them and they could gossip about everyone. The staff only spoke Spanish and Portugese.

When talking about the kind of elves that fix shoes in the middle of the night or work for old men making toys or who eat your socks when you’re not looking, you know, those guys? The little fellows with loud socks?

I think more of those guys should also show up in high fantasy settings but the tall long living use bows and arrows elves also exist. And they are also called elves.

Also they must hate each other for no particular reason.

What is... a rarepair?

Rarepair refers to a rare pairing inside a fandom. This means that a pairing that someone ships does not have a lot of fanart or fanfiction about them or anything at all.

While crackships are always rarepairs, these rare pairings can make a lot of sense in canon, but they are just not that popular. But they often also refer to shipping characters that do not interact in canon at all, maybe not even know each other in the source material.

There are no exact numbers on when a pairing is considered a rarepair but some characteristics are that the tag on AO3 does not have a lot of hits and that most of the entries were written by the same person.

Shipping a rarepair can be frustrating, when you feel like you are alone in your love for a pairing, but it can also be fun to be able to shape the pairing together with two, three other shippers however you want them, because you basically own the ship by solely contributing to it.

My personal gripe with Dom/Sub kinks in sexual relationships is this: so many men already get off on it. A huge amount of men don’t know how to make sex pleasurable and safe. Many women have reported that their partners or one night stands have chocked them. And the amount of men who not only know how to make sex pleasurable for women but also make women feel safe is tiny. It just gives me the ick to read dom/sub interactions. There are many ways to make sex spicy and non violent but not stale an emotionless.

We live in one weird timeline where romance and sexuality in every work of fiction, regardless of genre, is expected to either be Hallmark levels of safe and sanitized and anything less than that must be condemned and treated like Lifetime levels of one dimensional.

Did anyone like my story about my version of Taboo?

I got super fed up with the idiot writers of Taboo. I really want to throw something really hard at their heads and slap them. So I figured that I would write my own story. It’s way better than Taboo, I think. James Keziah Delaney’s name in my story is James Kelly Delaney. His father is Irish and his mother is Scottish who used to live in America and she got kidnapped by the Cherokee and grew up with them until she was 16 and moved back to Scotland because she was tired of America. She didn’t try to drown James when he was two but she was sent to a mental hospital for not behaving like a proper woman. Horace remarried and his daughter is named Zelda Annamarie. She was wild and untamed and had a personality like my James. James was 15 when he was sent off to military school. James and Zelda had a romantic relationship from the age of 14 to 18 when James was shipped off to Africa and South America. James spent 1 year in Brazil and 1 year in Africa where he was shipwrecked. He spent 1 year in Africa before he moved on to the Middle East and fell in with traders on the Silk Road where he made his fortune. He ended up EXTREMELY rich. When he came back he learned how important Nootka Sound was. Since he was familiar with the Spanish and Portugese traders, instead of getting messed up with Britain and America, he decided to lease his land to Spain, Portugal, and the Dutch East India Company for a 100 year lease. He was then under their protection and if anything happened to him it would cause a war. Spain granted him a title of nobility and he was made a Duke.

Zelda, instead of rejecting James for faux religious grounds and thinking their relationship was a sin, fully embraced their obvious passion. She was just afraid of her abusive husband and the scandal and gossip if people found out that she was sleeping with her half brother. Her stupid husband still beat her and read her letters. Instead of rejecting James in her letters she would write him very dull letters all about the gossip she heard and the weather. But she did manage to meet up with him. When they did Zelda was told him that she wanted to renew their passionate relationship again. She told James that her husband was abusive and that they would have to have very secret rendezvous so no one would notice them or find out. James told her that he would visit her in her dreams and they would have dream sex. Zelda was very excited and told him to come to her every night because it would make her horrible marriage bearable until she could kill her husband. The first time they met up at the soirée, Zelda pulled him into the trees and they had their first in person love making session.

Then Lorna shows up at the reading of the will. James sees her as nothing better than a coat rack. meaning he doesn’t care about her at all. When she gets killed, James says, “ok and…..? Am I supposed to care about that? It’s a good thing she’s gone because I have full control of my inheritance back.”

Whenever Zelda and James see each other in public they share insanely heated glances. Zelda has a perpetual come hither smirk on her face. The second time they meet up when the American spy approaches James, before that James and Zelda had a passionate love making session. After Zelda kills her husband and runs to James’ house, Zelda pulls James into his bedroom and they spend a very passionate night together. Then James visits her at her house and they spend two days in bed together. Then this is where the story takes a turn for the fun and reads very much like a Bridgerton book.

I would love thoughts, comments, and criticism on my story idea. I just wanted to write something fun and happy.

I just discovered the amazing TV show Taboo. Whew it had been a wild ride reading all the commentary by both reviewers and pedestrian viewers. I am a little different being an English Creative writing major. I have to write an insane amount of academic essays analyzing stories and picking them apart. So pedestrian viewers are not just uncomfortable but seriously dislike the fact that James Delaney is written as being very much in love with his half sister Zilpha. The very name of the TV show is Taboo. In most western cultures one of the most taboo types of relationships is the marriage of siblings and half siblings. This tv show is going to be about James Delaney and the love of his life his sister Zilpha. Analyzing the dynamic in the show of Lorna and James reveals for me some very interesting observations.

James has created a chess game to take down the East India company. He represents the king chess piece. Lorna is nothing but a pawn. She is unimportant and to James someone to be used in his game. She never will be important to him. She is never going to be his romantic interest. This show is called Taboo. Think about how uncomfortable and shocking James’ very loving and passionate relationship with his sister Zilpha is. That is the point of this show. When James looks at Lorna he looks at her the same way he looks at Atticus. Unimportant. Compare that to the way he looks at Zilpha. He looks at her and I can tell how much he loves her. His face shows passion, lust, desire, love, deep and intense love. He looks like he wants to rip Zilpha’s clothes off and bang her. On James’ chessboard, Zilpha is the Queen to James’ king. James wants to protect Zilpha and keep her safe. He wants to keep her away from the dangerous life that he is facing. Away from his quest for revenge. James bound his soul to Zilpha in way that means that that bond will never be broken. Zilpha is the one person James loves on the entire earth. She is the only one that he has thought about and desired and dreamed about for the past 10 years, even when he was continents away in Africa. She is the reason why he would take revenge on the most powerful company on earth, and face off with the earths mightiest empire of the British Empire and the United States. He would do all this for Zilpha alone and no one else.

If the very loving and passionate relationship between James and Zilpha is deeply uncomfortable and makes people have the ick. That is the point. Their relationship is supposed to make people uncomfortable. It’s supposed to be Taboo. Because that is why this TV show is called Taboo. That is the entire point of this show.

Also just some historical context that most people don’t bother to learn. Before the Victorian era and the era when religious morals infiltrated EvERYONE, in the early 1800’s in the working class and poor classes it was insanely common for first cousins to marry. Half siblings did marry and have children. It certainly raised eyebrows but it wasn’t unheard of or uncommon. Hence James and Zilpha. Honestly, I am so excited to see how she survives and when she comes back. (Personally if I wrote her story, I would have her slap James very hard and yell at him for pushing her away. I would understand why, but I would still have her slap the shit out of him and then have them have very hot make up sex. Get that hot man Zilpha. You deserve it. Lol)

These two in my fave tv show. Where the unhinged hot man kills everyone in his way. He’s deeply in love with his sister. She’s the Queen to his king in the chess game he’s playing. Everything he does is to protect her. The best part is that when he was in Africa he went to a voodoo priest. As someone said, “The first words that James mutters to Zilpha in Twi are “come back to me, return to me, I want to be inside you”. The sex voodoo is actually a real fetish ritual in which a person binds himself to the other and there is no way to break the bond.”

These two deserve to live happily ever after. Personally I would love the last scene be of them, zilpha in James’ arms, and a baby on the way.

These two and the TV show they are the main couple and main characters in, Taboo, refers to them. Because what is one of the most Taboo relationships? Siblings being in a romantic relationship. So, On the left, we have James Delaney and on the right we have the love of his life. Been together since he was 15 and sent off to military school. His younger half sister Zeliah. Plot of this delicious show: James was in a shipwreck and lived in Africa for 10 years. He comes back when their father dies and in the will everything is left to James. Including a piece of land on Vancouver Island that no one thinks is at all important. It is. It turns out that the American and British Governments are drawing up where the borders of their two countries should be. The East India Company wants James’ land because its at the mouth of the huge river that is on the land James inherited. That land gives who ever owns it an insane amount of power. Because the water opens onto the Pacific Ocean and leads to China and all of Asia. So the East India company wants it too. So they want to kill James. Zeliah looks horrified here because an American spy saw her and her brother James talking way too close and James looking like he wanted to rip her dress off. Later on Zeliah lets loose and chooses her hot brother. She stabs her husband with a hat pin and runs to her brother gleeful in the night.

So this show was written by the actor who plays James. Tom Hardy who happens to be the son of an accomplished author. So Tom gave his story to his dad and his dad improved it and extended the manuscript to the 1860’s. Tom describes Zilah her as a firework. (Personally I think thats a very nice compliment)

The way this fandom twists itself into knots to create separate standards for certain characters should actually be studied. Because tell me why Lucien is treated like a martyr but Elain is treated like trash.

- Lucien, a full grown Fae male with ties to multiple courts, is complicit in Feyre’s emotional abuse at Tamlin’s hands. Lucien is Tamlin’s friend and one of the few people Tamlin would listen to. He “tries” to help Feyre but mostly just tells her to wait out her suffering. The fandom: “What was Lucien supposed to do??” “Tamlin is his High Lord! He couldn’t have done anything!!” “Actually Lucien was being abused by Tamlin too!!”

- Elain, a young teenage girl with limited skills and resources, doesn’t help take care of her family when they are destitute and starving. Elain acknowledges her failures in the book and attempts to make right by them. Plus she did buy Feyre paint when she had the opportunity. This fandom: “Elain is useless and stupid!!” “Why didn’t she grow potatoes??” “She planted flowers while her family starved???” (ignoring the fact that Feyre bought her the seeds and instead treating Elain like she just wasted everyone’s time and money) “What an evil, horrible sister!!”

- Elain did not have a particularly large role in assisting war efforts because she was in a severe state of grief/shock. She still manages to have several notable moments where she assists the group in an impactful way. This fandom: “Elain is so useless!” “All she does is cry!” “Elain is boring and doesn’t help with anything!!”

- Lucien has an incredibly small role in assisting with the war efforts, not even actually freeing Vassa (Papa Archeron handled that). This fandom: “Lucien couldn’t have possibly helped! “He was sent to the continent!!” “The IC kept Lucien from getting to do anything!” “Lucien killed his way across a battlefield!!” (ignoring this is actually never stated in the text. He obviously saw combat but it is never mentioned how much he did or did not do. Because ultimately it is not relevant)

- Elain is weary of Lucien and doesn’t want to accept a mating bond she had no choice in. It is explicitly stated how much she still loves Greyson and how long she mourned the loss of him. The worst part of the fandom: “She needs to get over herself!” “She has to give Lucien a chance!!” “What a bitch!!” “Lucien deserves better!”

- Lucien seemingly unsure of what to do with Elain and thinking she was thrown at him. Lucien is perfectly content not being around Elain and has started a new life without her in it. The worst part of this fandom: “Lucien is so kind for giving Elain space!” “He is an angel, a perfect gentleman!” “Lucien treats Elain better than any other male has treated his mate in the series!!”

So apparently Lucien’s inaction or complacency means he is actually the biggest victim in this story, but also a conquering hero, and also the best mate anyone could ask for.

But Elain’s mistakes and unrecognized contributions make her boring, evil, stupid, useless, and a total undeserving bitch.

Elain very literally did more to save Pyrthian than Lucien did across the whole series but the discussion around her is vitriolic, while her “mate” is type cast as a victim of all circumstances. Make it make sense.

*This is not an anti Lucien post. I do not hate his character and I truly believe every action or inaction with Lucien happened for a reason. This is simply an attempt to demonstrate the atrocitious double standard that exists in this fandom*
