Do you want to know how he got these scars? This week, Emily and V take a trip to Gotham City to look back at Alan Moore's Batman magnum opus, The Killing Joke. While it garnered tons of accolades for its darkness, grittiness, violence, and portrayal of The Joker's semi-definitive backstory, The Killing Joke has also received a lot of (totally warranted) criticism for its darkness... grittiness... violence... and misogyny. The history and continued legacy of what happened to Barbara Gordon in The Killing Joke is complex, dark, and hard to reconcile. Oracle was a badass character who represented a deeply underserved portion of the DC Comics audience; however, Gail Simone kind of had a point that it was metatextually misogyny keeping Babs in her chair. DC's choice(s) surrounding Barbara have no easy answers. However, your intrepid hosts do find a light in the dark-grim-grittiness of Gotham as they discover (create) its worst strip mall and the heroic citizens who brave its potholes...
This Week In Fandom History is a fandom-centric podcast that tells you… what happened this week in fandom history!

Batman Unburied Incorrect Quotes Pt 11
Ivy: Women do twenty percent of all violent crime, men do eighty percent.
Ed: And that means nonbinary people do literally zero percent, so the next time you wanna call the cops on me for "breaking and entering-"

Ed, singing: And if I don't separate my skittles by color I can feel my bones!

Barbara: Let it go, Riddler, let it go.

This post inspired me to think about secret identity logistics and I think Cass being so cavalier with her secret identity would actually help. Like, it makes the rest of the family's secret identities better because Cassandra Cain is obviously Blackbat/Batgirl. By contrast they would look even more civilian and if someone is not going to realize their kid is a vigilante is Brucie Wayne.
"But wouldn't they connect the dots to the rest of the family?" Listen, If those were bats they'd simply get out of the kidnappings and hostage situations they get themselves into like Cassandra. The fact that they always need to be saved proves they're, indeed, civilians.
Also, I doubt the math would math unless you knew very specific internal things to connect each vigilante to their civilian identity. Brucie is, for starters, as civilian as can get and thanks to the Mandela effect everyone is convinced that he was caught on camera making out with Batman anyways. So that's a non-starter.
Dick Grayson is trying to be a regular person, so the public would know he exists and comes back to important things but he's mostly out of the public eye. Plus, he's a police officer, why would anyone assume he's in kahoots with his little sister that was adopted after he'd already left Gotham?? And when he came back to Gotham for a while to take care of things for his father, is not like there was a new vigilante. It was still batman and Robin (the Robin was new, but Dick Grayson is an adult so, not likely).
Then we get to the big one: Jason is legally dead. You can't assign him any vigilante because he's mmm super dead. I'm sure there's a true crime podcaster trying to argue that he was the second robin and died doing robin shit, that's why Batman and Bruce broke up. But even if it's compelling, it's also considered in really bad taste. Also, can't be tied to Cassandra because she arrived after his death.
Tim gets a similar reaction to Brucie in the sense that there's no way he is a vigilante. He's the immunocompromised Twink from Forbes "30 under 30". He's literally physically incapable of being a super hero due to both a lack of Muscles and a lack of time. That boy has to run an entire massive money making machine and, for all gothamites know, he may very well be asthmatic as well. Plus, he gets kidnapped like crazy. If he was a hero he would at least now how to avoid being put in those situations. They suspect he's covering for Cass though, since he's smart enough to realize his sister is freaking Batgirl.
This means that even if Cass is Batgirl they can't really trace Batman, Nightwing, Red Robin or Red hood back to the family (not to speak of Batwoman, Catwoman, Huntress, Batgirl a 1 and 2, Oracle or spoiler). So at this point why would you even try to connect the others? Clearly Cass is the exception, not the rule.
Like, sure, Duke did survive the Riddler ruling Gotham and if you put some effort, it wouldn't be impossible to tie him to the We Are Robin movement. But also ...is it because he's black? Is it because he's the only black person from Gotham you know of?? His sister is a vigilante, and he is black, so he must be the black vigilante of course (He would be the one making this comments in social media through his sock puppet accounts and the True Crime/conspiracy communities would be too scared to touch that one with a ten foot pole)
Damian is another one where I think Bruce would do what he can to protect him from the press (partially for his own good and partially because he's the opposite of media trained). Most of the info the tabloids would get is from people tangentially related to him. Like, sure, he does look a bit like the new robin, and his sister is Batgirl. But, unless you're one of the people claiming he's the lovechild of Bruce Wayne and Batman (test tube baby??? Batman trans???) it wouldn't make a lot of sense now, would it?
Like Cass is so fucking weird compared to the rest of her family's civilian identities it makes them look rock solid by comparison.

ifffff you're still taking asks about the podcast: opinions on Babs in it? love your thoughtful analysis
no major complaints, honestly? she's not really in it quite enough to get too terribly fucked over, and I was really relieved that the writers had the restraint not to catapult her straight to being Batgirl and REALLY leaned into her being an Oracle-type support for Batman instead. this isn't going to happen because god and DC comics personally hate me, but since a Barbara-centered series is almost inevitable I'm REALLY hoping they let her skip straight to being Oracle instead of fucking around with Batgirl.
overall I just REALLY adore her character, she exists in such a special and unusual space as a version of Barbara Gordon who's made it (comparatively) far in her life without *quite* becoming a vigilante of any kind while still being heavily influenced by Batman and retaining a lot of the traits that make her such a firestorm in the comics and she's so so dear to me. it's sooooo cool to get to see these little glimpses of her coming into her own after being restrained by being a cop and still gleefully breaking the law at every opportunity.
you know how literally every time Barbara shows up in Secrets in the Dark Eddie goes "Barbara!!! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧" because he's obsessed with her. that was me.

Steph and Tim, in full vigilante kits, do videos for the podcast as well, just to show that, yes, it’s actually Red Robin and Spoiler, so they know all the hot gossip.
Several video episodes have been dedicated to the topics Alpha Males LOVE to hate on, except they always find ways to make it funny.
Women weaker than men? They shoot in the Batcave where, in the background, Black Bat is clearly cleaning the floor with Red Hood and Nightwing, even when they double team her.
They spend an episode talking about “these weak gay men” while Bernard, in not much more than a mask and a stolen cape that is obviously one of Tim’s spares, is cuddling up to his BF and adding his two cents.
They get everyone involved with anything Racist because, come on, half the Bats are clearly Not White.
Kate came over when they rehashed gays, especially in the military. She walks off screen at one point to drag Bruce across the backdrop, where you can vaguely hear “you idiot! Stop breaking your bones! Have you not been using the defense strategies I taught you???
Barbara, in her former Batgirl costume and with a laptop with Oracle’s symbol in place, is clearly in her wheelchair when they talk on disabilities, and she is actively hacking the commenters’ accounts who take this legitimately and subscribing them all to so many porn sites.
Just them clearly showing, yeah, the Bats are SOOOOO masculine and Alpha.
In a context where Batman is known and seen through his public League appearances, the misogynistic, homophobic, "alpha male" guys start using his image to illustrate their discourse of going to the gym, and seeking submissive women. They admire and misinterpret his traits as endorsements of their toxic masculinity. Online, they share images of Batman with stuff like "Be the Alpha, Be the Batman". They even use the word Batmen as a synonym to Alpha Male. "Real Batmen don't show weakness".
When Bruce becomes aware of this, he hates it. He despises them for all their messed up views, knowing they completely misunderstand his principles. Batman's true strength lies in his commitment to justice, empathy, and respect for all individuals, values that are fundamentally opposed to the toxic masculinity they promote. Bruce is determined to distance his image from their rhetoric, seeing them as nothing more than sexist and homophobic idiots.
So he decides to be a tiny tiny bit more Brucie when they appear in public. Not in form, but in substance :
When he's asked a question, he tries to go "I have no clue, I'd have to ask Black Canary.", or "I'm not sure, I'd have to see what Wonder Woman thinks about that", or "This time, we really couldn't have done anything, anything at all, without Supergirl."
Also, Batman becomes more visibly affectionate with Superman. During public appearances, if he senses a camera on them, he makes sure to be seen clinging to Superman. He would rather face dating rumors every day than be associated with those idiotic discourses.
(It's also a good premise for a superbat fake-dating fic !!)

2021 Reading List Challenge Day 06
January 06, 2021
Birds of Prey #1 (01/2004)
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Ed Benes
Story Arc: Feeding the Game Part 2
Rating: 2/5
Starts off with Barbara trying to fire Dinah from the Birds of Prey after she got injured on two recent missions, the last one putting Dinah in a wheelchair while she heals.
Barbara leaves for a restaurant where the waitress is... trying to set Babs up with the cook? Meanwhile, Dinah is booking sparring appointments to get herself back on the team, and finds out from Dick Grayson the reason Barbara is in a mood is because she and Dick broke up.
The waitress has a daughter who goes up to Babs, and then the waitress sits down at the table with tiramisu???
Huntress is dressed up as Black Canary and being chased by the security of a senator, calling Oracle for assistance but it’s Dinah who answers.
Dinah leaves the building and uses her canary-cry to destroy the car that was chasing Huntress, then fights the men. Barbara apologizes in her own way and mentions bringing Huntress onto the team.
This was just so... Weird? The restaurant scene really bothers me, and I know it’s apparently a typical Gail Simone scene when there’s food involved. Overall the dialogue sounds similar to CW.

If you want a good Batman podcast with interesting takes on the comics I recommend The Batman books: The Dark knight in prose. It's typically thirty minutes to a Hour with the occasional two hours. But her voice is nice for a amateur podcast at first.
Another is Batgirl to Oracle: a Barbara Gordan podcast. Again a fun exploration of Babs overall. Again a Amateur podcast but I love supporting those.
A more professional one is Batman the Audio Adventures. It's a Max original tho.
All of these are on Amazon music.
Also I'm Here! I'm full of Random Dc Knowledge! (Please someone ask me about No Man's Land and how crucial it is to the whole of the Gotham vigilantes.)
Never will I stop with the steadfast notion that folks in the DPXDC fandom should interact with at least some form of canon DC media.
There are comics, tv shows, radio dramas both old and new, podcasts, movies, magazines, so much shit that intentionally avoiding the media is simply preventing yourself from spawning new ideas and gaining a new appreciation for a fandom that you’re already in.
The Superman Radio Show has episodes 11 minutes long. A lot of the TV shows don’t have episodes that surpass 30 minutes and most are nearly fully clipped on the official DC YouTube channel. The amount of fan made motion comics is astounding. The amount of fanmade animations is equally as incredible.
#i feel bad for not knowing any pirate sites#but i am a firm supporter of my library#my sweet librarian is OPINIONATED#i am a huge fan of batfam flashfam and the entirety of 90s YJ

Batgirl (vol. 3) #16: The Lesson, pt. 1: Grass Before the Scythe
Read Date: July 14, 2023 Cover Date: February 2011 ● Writer: Bryan Q. Miller ● Penciler: Dustin Nguyen ● Inker: Derek Fridolfs ● Colorist: Guy Major ● Letterer: Travis Lanham ● Editor: Sean Ryan ●
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● yet again, Batgirl asks questions instead of doing what Oracle says. yet again, that hesitation bites her in the ass
● 👏👏👏
Synopsis: Batgirl is on the run from the GCPD for the murder of Newton Flitwik. Oracle sends the Ricochet, but it won’t reach her for another four minutes and she has to continue evading her pursuers through Devil’s Square. She jumps through the skylight of an abandoned building and falls several stories to the ground, dislocating her shoulder. She is found by Detective Gage, who believes her innocence. He gives her the bloody batarang, thinking she can find something the crime scene techs didn’t, and he pops her shoulder back into place and promises to buy her some time so she can escape. Oracle listens to their flirtatious banter in discomfort.
Steph hides in plain sight the next day and attends class as normal, albeit with her arm in a sling. Jordanna has started a campaign against Batgirl, and she is claiming her “grief” over Newton’s death is negatively affecting her studies, which has already gotten her a pass on one quiz. She tells Steph to do the same, but instead she walks away. Oracle has analyzed the batarang and discovered the blood was added after Newton’s time of death, meaning Batgirl is being framed, as well as trace radiation from a unique isotope that in all of Gotham is only present in an abandoned tech warehouse across town.
Proxy breaks into the computer lab at Gotham University to reassemble Newton’s flash drive. She is caught by a guard, who points out the security camera directed right at the computer Newton used. This gives her an idea.
Batgirl bursts into the warehouse and confronts four out of the five reapers, who have used the manhunt for Batgirl as a distraction while they stole high-end black market machine parts. Gage arrives with the GCPD, who arrest the reapers, and he explains that they received video of the reapers chasing Newton across campus. They now know Batgirl didn’t kill him. The fifth reaper runs in, wearing a speed suit, to whisk away the reapers and the machine parts. Thanks to the flash drive Proxy reassembled, Oracle has figured out that Newton designed the suits and told the Order of the Scythe how to find more parts for it, but they stole more than needed.
The Order of the Scythe regroups in parts unknown. They argue over what they should do now that Batgirl is onto them until Slipstream declares that from now on they stick to the plan, and if Batgirl gets in their way, she’ll be gone in the blink of an eye.

Batman Unburied Incorrect Quotes Pt 10
Ed: Every time I pull out my phone, I can hear what all you guys are saying about me.
Ed, pulls up slideshow: "Yo, why does Edward Nygma look like a racoon on adderall?" "Oh, why does this cartoon look like the Riddler?" And it hurts my feelings! Because it's accurate, you assholes!
-----------------------------------------
Ed: I'm not dead!
Barbara, scooping dirt onto him: We'll miss you, Eddie.
-----------------------------------------
Ed, writing in his diary with a glitter gel pen: I'm losing my sense of humanity. Nothing matters. God is dead. There's blood on my hands.

Barbara: I can't go anywhere with you, Eddie.
Ed: That hurt my feelings, now we're both in the wrong.
