My ideal Batman Timeline

I'm leaving this for reference for any fanfiction I make or post I make. Take it or leave it. Do what you want. I'm just trying to get all of Bruce's Robins in order and some of the DC timeline.

Bruce Wayne leaves at 17 after graduating high school early

Bruce graduates college at 19 with a business degree (Alfred didn’t order him to, but he strongly inclined Bruce to do it)

Bruce trains until he is 22

Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham and becomes Batman at 22

When he is 23 (AKA Year 2) The Long Halloween scandal occurs

By the end of Year 2 Harvey Dent is officially Two-Face

At the beginning of Year 3 Bruce adopts Dick Grayson

During the middle of Year 3, Batman meets Superman for the first time. After an adventure, they become friends

At the end of Year 3 Dick Grayson is properly trained to be Robin

By Year 4, Bruce is officially stuck in a month long entanglement with the Al Ghuls. Bruce and Talia sleep together multiple times throughout this month. By the end of it, Bruce has cut ties with the entire family and they will occasionally feud.

By year 5, the Justice League is formed

During Year 13 of Bruce’s career, Dick turns 18 and has a falling out with Bruce. Dick leaves to become Nightwing and form the Teen Titans

As of Year 3: Bruce Wayne is 24 Dick Grayson is 8 Barbra Gordon is 9

As of Year 13: Bruce Wayne is 34 Dick Grayson is 18 Barbra Gordon is 19 (Barb starts doing Batgirl stuff after 6 months Dick becomes Robin and becomes recognized as a Batfamily member by the end of Year 4)

During the middle of Year 13, Barry Allen dies during Crisis. The Crisis doesn't matter, but now Barry Allen is dead due to stopping a world ending event. Wally West is now The Flash

Year 14, Bruce finds Jason Todd stealing his tires on the anniversary of his parents death. This cracks him up so much that he adopts him (that’s actually canon)

By the middle of Year 14, Jason Todd has been trained to become Robin

By the beginning of Year 16, Joker kills Jason Todd

Jason Todd is revived by the League of Assassins before he is buried. Bruce Wayne is too frazzled to notice the fake body

Shortly after the death of Jason Todd, Joker shoots Barbra Gordon in the spine, causing her to be paralyzed from the waist down. Since Batman didn’t have a Robin, Batman almost killed the Joker

By the middle of Year 16, Tim Drake recognizes that Bruce is a hop skip and a jump away from killing someone and forces himself into the Batfamily. By the end of Year 16, Tim Drake is officially Robin

Year 19: Jason Todd officially debuts as the Red Hood

By year 22, Damian Wayne is in the picture and Tim Drake becomes Red Robin

By year 24, Jason is accepted back into the Bat Family as he vows not to kill anyone ever again

Batgirl: Shadows of Gotham by Jade Gretz

Title: Shadows of Gotham

The moon hung low over Gotham City, its silver light casting a spectral glow over the darkened streets. The alleys, usually teeming with the whispers of the night, now lay still, a heavy silence settling like a shroud. It was a city where chaos thrived, where the line between sanity and madness blurred into an indistinguishable fog. And tonight, the fog was thicker than ever, for the notorious Harley Quinn had decided to unleash her brand of pandemonium on Gotham's unsuspecting populace.

Barbara Gordon, known to the city as Batgirl, perched silently atop a gargoyle on the edge of Gotham’s Clock Tower. Her sharp eyes, hidden behind the mask of her cowl, scanned the labyrinthine streets below. The city’s heartbeat echoed through her, every thump a reminder of the peril lurking in the shadows. Tonight was different. Tonight, the usual crime spree had taken a darker turn. Harley Quinn was not just acting out; she was orchestrating an elaborate performance of chaos, a symphony of destruction that seemed almost too macabre for the streets of Gotham.

The mission was simple, yet daunting: stop Harley Quinn’s reign of terror before it spiraled completely out of control. Batgirl’s fingers tightened around the edges of the gargoyle, her resolve hardening like steel. She had faced Harley Quinn before, in all her twisted splendor, but tonight was a different story. Tonight, the Joker’s ex-girlfriend had something far more sinister in mind—a plan that promised to turn Gotham’s darkest night into a living nightmare.

Her communicator buzzed softly, the familiar voice of Oracle cutting through the silence. “Batgirl, we have reports of a disturbance at the abandoned amusement park. Harley’s henchmen have set up camp there. They’re armed and dangerous. You need to stop them before they execute her plan.”

Barbara’s jaw clenched. “I’m on it,” she replied, her voice steady and resolute. With a flick of her wrist, she activated her grappling hook, the line shooting out and securing itself to a nearby building. Review: Birds of Prey #18

Review: Birds of Prey #18

Writer: Kelly Thompson Art: Juann Cabal Colors: Adriano Lucas Letters: Clayton Cowles Reviewed by: Matthew B. Lloyd     Summary The assassins are coming for Sin!  Dinah and Barbara devise a trap that gives the "sisters" a chance for a "get away" weekend.  Meanwhile, more nonsense with Barda and Cassandra.

Positives Bird of Prey #18 starts out strong as Barbara gets some intel indicating that the assassins from whom Sin was liberated back in Birds of Prey Vol.1 #95 (2006) are coming to take her back.  This is a nice continuity callback by Kelly Thompson.  It's a good use of DC history.  Contemporary comics don't get this right as often as they should.  The opening pages with Dinah and Sin give some insight into Dinah's character which is appreciated and connect to the same story referenced as it ties into Dinah's fighting prowess and how she values skill in hand-to-hand combat.

Barbara's concern for her friends and development of the plan is a solid use of her role as Oracle.  Barbara responds to a call for assistance is a nice touch even if it isn't executed well.  There's some nice storytelling as Dinah and Sin communicate non-verbally as they become aware of the assassins that have surrounded their "safe house" and are preparing to attack.  This whole sequence shows that Thompson can be a good writer. Negatives Despite the very good start to Birds of Prey #18, the secondary plot with Barda and Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) is unfortunately more of Thompson's nonsense.  It's obvious that Thompson doesn't know how to handle this cast effectively.  Instead of Bara and Cass doing something worthwhile they are seen playing video games before heading off to help John Constantine.  It  makes sense for these two to have something to do while the smaller mission that Dinah and Sin are on runs, but it just seems like a weird solution to send these two on a magical mission to assist Constantine.  Thompson has tried to push this series into the magical and supernatural and it is like fitting a square peg in a round hole.  In this particular issue, it points out that Barda doesn't really fit into this friend group and Thompson has to find something for her to do, the same with Cass who's usually more of a loner.

It also demonstrates that Thompson doesn't know how to manage a larger cast effectively and make it all feel like it fits.  The plotline with Dinah and Sin is a more grounded and personal thing that fits the characters, while the mission for Constantine is just a distraction from that better plot.  Not only should Barbara have just called in some magical types to help Constantine instead of sending Barda and Cass.  This is so much wasted space for the issue that could've been used to move the Dinah/ Sin plot forward.  Thompson has done this in this series.  The Birds of Prey concept can be a tricky one to crack, it takes the right balance of action and character moments and part of that is knowing how to use the characters.  This has been a problem for Thompson throughout the series.  

I doesn't really make sense that Barda and Cass are just sitting around playing video games...waiting...for something.  I don't think this is their life.  They have other things to do.  Thompson wants to get smaller personal moments, but they have to be meaningful and it doesn't make sense that they are just sitting around...waiting.  Also, Thompson's inability to write quality humorous moments doesn't help.  Half this issue should be replaced with something meaningful instead of the nonsense.  It would be better to show actual personal moments unrelated to a mission with the pair bonding instead of playing video games. Verdict Birds of Prey #18 is a mixed bag.  Half of the issue is really good, and half of the issue is wasted.  Thompson can't write a complete issue and gets in her own way allowing the good stuff to be undermined by nonsense that has no value to the story or characters.  I had real hopes for this issue, but it's more of the same.  This series will not improve until a better writer takes over.

Terry McGinnis is the only person who can be the next Batman

I don't normally make hard statements like this. I typically hate it when somebody makes hard statements like this, but hear me out.

No prior Batfamily character can be the next Batman. I'll keep it brief and explain why going person by person (obvious headcanon warning)

Dick is definitely a likelier candidate than most. He can cover for Batman if the need ever arises. But I believe that Dick Grayson hates the idea of actually becoming Batman. He can play the role. He was a circus kid and he's got the heart of a theatre kid, he can play the role all day long. But he was the first. He arguably saw Batman at his natural worst. He and Alfred, anyways. I'm going to drop some OP lore to further elaborate. My dad's a pastor. He's a really good pastor. He's a good man, and he may be an ass, but that's because I know him as "dad". For YEARS, people would tell me that I was just like him, and for a long time, I wanted to be him. It's what boys do when their dad is at the very least decent. But, as I got older, I saw the tapestry and saw the flaws. I saw how tired being a pastor made my dad. I saw how much of his life being a pastor was taking up. I would never tell my dad to stop being a pastor, because that's him. That's his calling; and if he was anything else, then he'd be a soulless, husk of a man. But I've seen what being a pastor does to you, and I don't want that. I want to be better than that. Dick Grayson has seen what The Batman does to a person. He's seen Bruce do things that Dick would never do, and the idea of being the next Batman is something that got soured to him. And it definitely doesn't help that that's what a lot of people used to do to him. So yeah, traumadumping aside, Dick would never STAY Batman. Even if he doesn't know it.

I honestly think it's best if Jason stays as far away from the idea of The Batman legacy as possible. Jason's at the best possible spot right now. He's taken his trauma and has turned it into his empowerment. I don't care what Three Jokers says, that's dumb. Joker's an ass, we don't listen to him. ESPECIALLY if he's swapped out his gun for a crowbar and has a no-kill rule, Jason could be Red Hood until he's 90 and it'll be narratively fulfilling.

Tim is one I see get thrown around a lot. However, I believe that The Batman would absolutely DESTROY him and he would be too stubborn to acknowledge it. One common denominator I believe every Robin goes through is the realization of "oh wow, Bruce is not okay" and trying to be better than that. While I do believe that Tim went through that, I also believe that Tim is arrogant enough to believe that he's better than that. Even putting all of the "alternate Tim evil gun toting Batman" futures aside, I think that Tim is obsessive enough as is. Giving him the mantle of The Batman would cause him to obsess even more to be like Bruce thus causing ANOTHER evil gun toting alternate future Batman. Tim is best as Red Robin. An independent agent that can go well with ANY Batman to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Babs is best as Oracle. No I will not be elaborating. If you want her to be Batgirl, then say that she can Batgirl every once and a while but doing it stresses out the microchip in her back.

Steph is best as Spoiler. She backdoored her way into the Batfamily by being competent enough as Spoiler. I honestly wish that she could be like Batwoman and establish herself as Batfamily adjacent and have her own supporting cast and such. If she does have one, then I'm sorry. Cassie is kind of a blind spot.

Sadly, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas, and Harper Row are even bigger blindspots of mine. From what I've seen of them, I can't think of any reasons they couldn't be Batman. However, I can't think of any reasons why they especially should be Batman.

Damian Wayne is my personal vote for becoming the next Batman out of everybody pre established. Not for any birthright reasons. That's dumb. Admittedly, DCeased really turned me on to the idea. I think that the idea of Damian being the child raised by Bruce that turned out the best is a really good idea. In retrospect, I guess the idea of birthright is technically why I'm choosing Damian. BUT, understand I'm doing it with the caveat that Damian is fully developed as a person and as a character. That is the END of his arc.

HOWEVER, Terry McGinnis takes the cake for me in terms of Batman successor. This is going off of the idea that he isn't a Bruce clone. I don't know how canon we've made that, but canon is relative, so I'm saying it's not for the sake of argument. Terry is an outsider. He has no baggage with the idea of The Batman. He's just a guy working through some grief with The Batman being used as a vehicle. He doesn't know any of the Bruceisms. He never had to explain to his friends that his dad is crazy and he's sorry he made contingency plans for all of them. Terry McGinnis gets to make Batman his own. And, luckily, he gets to have a fully realized Bruce to guide him along the way. I also think that it opens so much more story potential. It's essentially a soft reboot for The Batman as an idea. Everybody else can be out doing their own thing. But I think this works in the same way that Miguel O'Hara can ALSO be Spider-Man. I believe that every intimate Batfamily member would follow Bruce's footsteps by making Batman an UNHEALTHY obsession. Terry would be different, he'd lead the pack by turning The Batman into something HEALTHY.

Or maybe I don't read enough comics and all my interpretations are super surface level. Let me know. I'm willing to be wrong.

Gotham’s skyline was a jagged silhouette against a brooding sky, storm clouds gathering like dark conspiracies. Rain had begun to fall, the drops sharp and cold, slicing through the night air. On a rooftop, perched like a watchful gargoyle, Batgirl stared down at the streets below, her heart pounding not from fear, but from anticipation. She had tracked him for weeks now, following whispers in the underworld, piecing together a trail that had led her to this desolate district in the Narrows. Bane was here.

The wind whipped through her red hair as she adjusted her cowl. Barbara Gordon had faced some of Gotham’s most dangerous villains in her time, but tonight was different. The air crackled with tension, as if the city itself knew something cataclysmic was about to unfold. Bane wasn’t just another criminal mastermind; he was a force of nature, a walking nightmare of muscle and brutality. His very name sent shivers down the spines of Gotham’s bravest, but Batgirl wasn’t about to back down.

She activated her wrist-mounted communicator. “Oracle, I’m in position. No sign of Bane yet.”

The voice of her mentor and ally crackled in her ear. “Be careful, Barbara. You know how dangerous he is. If things go south—”

“They won’t,” Batgirl interrupted, steeling her voice. “I’ve prepared for this.”

There was a pause on the other end. “Just remember, this isn’t a game. Bane isn’t just strong—he’s smart. He’s already broken one Bat…”

The unspoken words hung heavy in the air: He broke Batman.

Barbara swallowed the lump in her throat. She’d read the files, seen the footage of Bane’s infamous confrontation with Bruce Wayne. The memory of Batman being lifted into the air and broken like a toy haunted her. But tonight, that wouldn’t happen. She was Batgirl. She wouldn’t let it happen again.

She crouched low, her cape pooling around her like the wings of a dark angel, scanning the decrepit warehouse district beneath her.
