IMO instead of charging, electric cars should have standard sized modular battery packs (small / short range cars have one, bigger & longer distance vehicles may have many) and service stations should swap the packs when you pull up and you go on your merry way moments later, and the station plugs the packs in.

These *may* be able to be automated, or you could have attendants do part of the work since different vehicles may have the packs mounted in different places.

This system would be a huge boon to electric car buyers as you're never stuck having to pay for a failed battery - you subscribe to the service similar to those propane tank swaps, but in such a way that the actual costs of the battery pack are spread over the predicted number of users.

In addition, since the battery is paid for during its use, a brand new car would be sold without the ownership of a battery - it would be delivered with a battery that's understood to be going back to the general swap :: new cars would cost much less (battery is paid for over the life of the battery).

Basically over the long haul yes you've paid for a battery and the charging, but you'll never be stuck with a bill for an entire new battery - this would allow used electric cars to have a reasonable resale value as well; today I wouldn't touch a older electric car or hybrid unless it was super cheap since I have to assume the risk that the battery will be toast any time and even smaller hybrid batteries are very large cost.

There could be different networks of battery swaps services, but I think it would be best served as a state-run enterprise so that any station can serve any car.

Depending on the stock a station has of batteries, they could be potentially be charged when the grid has the most excess power (typically night time) rather than *right now* when someone needs a charged battery.

finally getting back to playing violin and im having such a hard time tuning it. the tuning pegs keep sliding out of place. its always had this problem because its an old violin and i think it was broken at some point near the A string tuning peg, there's a couple cuts in the wood and i remember my Dad having to get it fixed when i first started playing it in 7th grade. its an old family heirloom. im really worried actually because im probably going to have to get a new violin at some point, preferably one that's more my level, and that shit is Expensive.

right but. the fibre arts take way more time and practice and "talent" (which does not exist. talent is not a real thing. the myth of talent is fundamentally what stops people from trying to do things in the first place)

the disparity is the point. the whole, entire, complete point. there is no side point, additional point, or extra point. the disparity is what is weird.

all of this "ah but akshualllylylylylylyly" about the costs involved.......... do also apply to the other one. they apply to both. if anything every single "well actually" cost applies more to fibre arts. every. single. overhead cost including the time learning to do it is orders of magnitude lower for jewellery

i get paid £5 an hour for a skill that took me 10 years to develop and £165 an hour for costume jewellery i could have started selling the same day i picked up pliers. i only waited longer to build up stock.

if i went for an extremely reasonable labour rate of £25 an hour earrings would cost £1.25

but fine. double it for the nebulous talent that doesn't exist and the one (1) day i spent initially figuring it out.

pay me £50 an hour. i think we can all agree that's extremely generous, right? earrings are £2

neither £165/h or £5/h are sensible rates, and it's a laughably surreal disparity to have developed as the norm in mainstream society such that people will pay big chain stores barely more for a t-shirt than a charm on a string.

being a crafter is so weird because it's like. here's a necklace that between materials and minimum wage labour cost me £1 to make. you will happilly pay me £6 for it because the same thing in claire's is £15. here's a blanket that between materials and half minimum wage labour cost me £700 to make. you will tell me to fuck off because you can buy a blanket in a shop for £100.
