strap in for this week's fic flavor: the failsafe episode of season one of the young justice cartoon except the simulation just won't. fuckin. end.
(fics that inspired this at the end)
If I ever did sit down to make my own fic, I'd split it in 3 parts:
The Simulation: bits and pieces of the 40 years Dick lives after most everyone he knows has died
The Return: the immediate aftermath and healing from the trauma of having not-quite-actually lived a whole life only to wake up and find out it was all fake. nothing traumatizing about that whatsoever.
The Unintended Consequence: aka the twist I'd love to add and would hint to in the second part - finding out the simulation, through martian mind fuckery, pulled from the real world (and in many cases, from real minds). Dick meets a bunch of people he didn't think were real outside the confines of his simulated life. A bunch of rowdy, heroism-inclined teens across the years get to meet the sibling/friend/mentor figure they all dreamed up one night.
(actual idea snippets under the cut)
.
Dick Grayson is 14 and most of the world's heroes have died. He planned a suicide mission that left him the sole survivor of a doomed team he helped found. The invasion may have been stopped, but is this really the price he wanted to pay?
The first face he sees in the infirmary is Roy's, and he has to close his eyes and just breathe for a few minutes because for one painful moment he'd thought it was Wally. But this isn't the world where his best friend miraculously survived alongside him. This is the one where he got his best friend killed and didn't even give him the courtesy of following behind him. Behind them.
.
Dick Grayson is 27 and has lived longer without Bruce than with him. The invasion's anniversary is always a tough day for him, but that morning seems especially harrowing. He'll get shit for it later, but can't resist stepping out onto the balcony of the manor's master bedroom (Bruce's old bedroom) for a smoke -- his first since he'd promised to quit if Jason, just 15 then, did too.
"Bad habits tend to pile up," he'd said, a rueful quirk to his tired grin. He'd tapped the cigarette twice on the railing and added, lower, "and this one's especially nasty, huh."
He inhales, watches the sun creep across the horizon, and lets acrid smoke burn through his lungs for a long moment before blowing it out in a small cloud. His eyes water, but he doesn't cough. It tastes just as bad as it did the first time he smoked one, not even a year after the invasion and treading water as Robin proved insufficient.
There hadn't been enough heroes to go around then, and Dick had been trained by one of the best. It hadn't been fair, but it had been his plan that had ultimately stopped the invasion. His shoulders everyone's expectations fell on.
He takes another drag, then smudges the lit end against the rail he's leaned on when he hears a boot scuff purposefully against the roofing above him.
"Todd and Pennyworth will be upset with you."
He doesn't turn around. Damian doesn't jump down to join him.
.
Dick Grayson is 54 and wakes up in a room full of ghosts. He hears his long-dead father-figure tell his long-dead team about a simulation they weren't meant to win. A training exercise gone wrong and only half a day spent under their mentors' careful, if slightly panicked, supervision.
He looks at his hands, watching the way his gloves crease when he flexes them in and out of tight fists. He looks at his team, their eyes a little haunted but shoulders slumped with relief even as they grumble. Batman's heavy, gloved hand settles on his shoulder and the weight of it is a nauseating mix of foreign-familiar.
He opens his mouth. Closes it.
Tears prick his eyes behind his domino mask, and he tells himself the suffocating, acidic void building in his chest is just some leftover side effect of the ordeal and not the grief-guilt of outliving yet another family (no matter that they hadn't been real in the end).
.
Dick Grayson is 16-going-on-56 and well used to the coincidences piling up between his simulated life and the real thing. Some of it -- missions and villains he remembers cropping up -- he's marked for Bruce to review and sort as he pleases. Some -- security for the cave, team building anecdotes, and training regimens -- he's shared with the team. And some he keeps only for himself.
Tim is one of those. He knows it's not fair to the kid (so much smaller now than he ever was when Dick lived his simulated life), but he can't help being selfish just for this. Tim is the one kid he's sure he didn't make up, and if Dick's taken to babysitting the kid just to be near at least one member of the family he built for himself in the wake of the worst days of his life .... Well, anyone who says shit about it can happily stand in line to have their teeth kicked in.
Despite this, it still catches him off-guard when he sees a familiar face pop up in one of Bruce's reports.
Jason Todd, caught boosting tires off the batmobile, is nearly the same age now as he was when Dick met him. He stares at the words, but none of them really sink in beyond the kid's name and address. He's moving before he's even made the decision.
He's used to the world kicking him when he's down - lived it for 40 frustrating years. But he has Bruce again. And things with Tim have been so good. And he's always been selfish when it comes to family. If he could just see Jason. If he could just meet him. If he could talk to him.
If if if if if--

Unpopular opinion anon. I really enjoyed Roman but I think I watched a different character than everyone else lol. The big one that's getting me right now is I don't really get the masochism takes? I didn't really read him as seeking punishment or only understanding love through pain... I don't feel like he was really seeking that out for the majority of the show. Also I think I may be alone in thinking Roman has kind of a normal(ish) relationships with both of his full siblings?? Like I don't get why everyone thinks the golden trio abused each other. Roman is such an asshole younger brother who turns protective the second Kendall is actually down. Like Roman can be terrible to them but also he loves them so much and it's the switch from jerk to "drop me a pin" that's I think is a core aspect of that character.
I just don't think I understand the fandom version of Roman or maybe I made up my own version and that's the one I like? At this point I honestly don't even know haha
I thought it might've been Roman you were thinking of, haha.
Yeah, there's a lot of interesting interpretations of him in fandom, and I think in some ways he's probably one of the more ambiguous characters on the show. I was just reading this little interview snippet actually and thinking how the interviewer's read of Roman as someone who has a lot of crazy adventures is so antithetical to how I see him. I tend to agree with both Kieran's reply and the OP's tags there though that Roman likely has a pretty good ear to the ground socially in order to project a certain image, but doesn't necessarily actually live it.
While it's not my personal read either, I do get where people are seeing it when it comes to the masochism factor. I think there's a valid interpretation of canon there between Roman courting violence with the protestors after Logan's funeral, and the complex scene with his and Kendall's hug in the finale, and I can see why people draw a link between that with things like the dog pound and Roman getting off on Gerri berating him.
There's texture there, y'know? Even if personally I agree with you and don't think they're especially linked. I tend to view Roman's seeking punishment or the murky tie between violence and love in 4.09 and 4.10 as being very explicitly tied to Logan's death and the void he's left, especially because we don't see it at any other point in the series. I also tend to view the dog pound as kids being kids (more on that in a sec), and I also don't know if I think Roman would get off in that particular masochistic way if it wasn't specifically Gerri doing it (I feel like that particular storyline and romance was that perfect storm of the taboo of it all, the hiding in plain sight, his mommy issues, and also just him generally being really into Gerri).
As for their childhood, yeah, I agree with you there too. It's one of the things that I love about the show actually is that the siblings can be mean, can squabble and set each other up to fail, but the love there is real. Like all their feelings for and about each other can be really complicated, but the love they have for each other just isn't. Gosh, Shiv even says it in the finale - she loves Kendall, but she can't stomach him.
That read of the kids abusing each other I do think tends to directly come from the dog pound game, or setting each other up (Kendall and Roman leaving Shiv with the chocolate milk, Kendall and Shiv leaving Roman with the water pistols, etc.) which I really think is pretty normal sibling behaviour. In particular, I've talked about the dog pound game a bit, namely here and here, and about fandom reads of Roman as the most abused here and here if you're interested in reading more!
But yes! I don't think you made him up. I think he's a character where a lot of different readings are possible because he does carry a little more ambiguity / we know less about his past than we do Kendall and Shiv's which invites more speculation and, sometimes, projection too. I think my read of him is pretty close to yours though.

This isn't canon to the AU, because the characters are definitely too traumatized for it and also trapped in an island, but... I wonder how my fankids would be in the DR AU. Like, maybe ten years after the Killing Game, once they've had time to deal with their issues and traumas and learned to live their new lives.

the thing about each pjo book is that each of them is uniquely the best in what it sets out to do. each is so monumental in what the story ends up amounting to, picking a favorite is almost like pointless. you could not have all 5 work so well if one was missing
#tlt introduces the world and the main trio and the main antagonist#fun adventure in wacky world. normal#som piggybacks off the already established status quo of the world (fun wacky adventure) and builds relationships upon it#explores characters more. more introspection from percy and a lot raised (and answered) about annabeth#plus solidifying percy's bond w grover#ttc was my least fav for a long time because it just felt like idk off#and i now think it's bc it's where the story pivots a bit and becomes more serious#it's still v much haha fun adventure bc it's children's lit after all. but it is once again meant to solidify#percy's bond w annabeth; percy's devotion to chb and his feelings towards the prophecy#as well as being the climax of thalia's character and kind of settling the fact luke really is evil and doing some real shit#exemplified by the fact this is the first book where protags die#and thalia pretty much kills luke. like he doesn't die but she couldn't have known he wouldn't die#so percy now REALLY has an idea of what he's up against#notice how the following two books really couldn't have happened w/o this kind of certification from him#botl is like. AHHHHHHHHHH it is my fav for a reason#i just really love how it doesn't lose the footing w the pace and the fun hijinks but still manages to deepen the relationships between#the characters#especially with the focus on percy's feelings towards nico and annabeth's towards luke#like *chef's kiss* that book is so fucking good please#and with a foundation so strong there really was no way tlo could have been bad lmao#but still the fact the book takes time from Teh Final Confrotation vibes of it all#to make a point to show percy going back to his mom's. luke going back to may's. hestia's presence in the middle of all of it#rick was like this series has a theme and i will show it to you NAOW#and the action scenes in this one??? UNPARALLELED. tlo and botl the most riveting to read#if you remove one of them the story stops making as much sense!!#(i can hear you all going yeah like every other book series and NO. esp ya/childrens lit has SO MUCH filler)#ME? pjoposting in 2023? it's more likely than you think#pjo

omg just remembered the (probably not really that) funny moment when we were at my dad's gf's for easter and we were talking about a roller coaster in a theme park that my dad really wants to go on
my sister, mum, and I had actually been (along with mum's partner) and i had to sit/lie down after going on said roller coaster bc it somehow really got to me
and mum was like "what roller coaster? i dont remember that. the only one i know is [second newest one that has existed for a couple years now]."
like yeah guess what maybe if you hadnt been drinking on the day we went, one day after my birthday because visiting the theme park had been my gift, you would remember!
but anyway hard luck, i think she realised and knew exactly why she couldnt remember and i only felt slightly bitter realising that she probably couldnt remember much of the rest of the day either then
and this was like the first ride we went on
so
i mean the day was nice and all, even if she cant remember it all :))

I'm wasting time by drawing my fursona (s)!
DJ/Spot (left) is a Cheetah, Theory (middle) is a snow leopard, and Light (right) is a Bunni.
(Fun fact: One time I had a Crocodile fursona. It didn't last very long, but maybe I'll redraw her sometime.)
Actually thinking about going on a spree because I had a few AJ looks that I'd like to Oc-ify :3

I am so torn on someone saying Luke Smith should have been the science advisor in Legend of Ruby Sunday instead of the kid character because: One hand, we would have gotten a connection to Sarah when it comes to facing Sutekh and also the gods in general given how the Bannerman Road gang faced the Trickster a-lot. On other hand, it would have meant acknowledging UNIT Luke in the show and we already got enough BBC/Disney trying to make Doctor Who pro-military via UNIT, we really don't need to drag the Bannerman Road gang kids into it via the show when SJA was pretty critical of UNIT...plus its already bad enough its canon in the audio books, don't need the show doing the same.
