Do you see them?

Eden Prairie residents who might be other than white, who eat foods different than yours, who celebrate different cultures, but who contribute to our Eden Prairie schools and community: Do you really see them?

Artist Cadex Herrera wants them seen, wants their stories known, wants their contributions recognized and acknowledged.

And, so he used those underlying themes to create his First Person Plural (We) art installation at Purgatory Creek Park: seven huge portraits of Eden Prairie residents that you see along Technology Drive as you drive west to east.

All of those who are portrayed on huge, painted sheets of plywood are immigrants with stories to tell. One of them is Juana Luna Monroy, whose portrait is at the head of the line.

reflections on a magic system

Ethics is that which creates and sustains life. “The ethics discussed here is…non-normative… [which is] the only possible way of thinking ethics and life generally in a responsible and non-hubristic way, from amidst life itself” (Zylinska 2014: 21). “From amidst life itself” – that is, there is no privileged position “above” life that a human can take to define and categorize the ethics that universally create and sustain life. More simply, a human or group of humans cannot universalize Values from a deific position. Life is horizontal, rhizomatic; to define it even in part is to participate in it and create it.

Proposition Nine of Baruch Spinoza’s Ethica: De Deo states: “Quo plus realitatis aut esse unaquaeque res habet, eo plura attributa ipsi competunt.” (“When there is more reality or being that a thing holds within itself, then it contains to itself more attributes,” my rough translation). That is, an attribute, or for Spinoza, an “extension” and/or “thought” of God, directly correlates to the “amount of being of a thing.” This is reminiscent of Deleuze’s affect theory (which Deleuze partially derived from his highly Spinozist influences): “a multiplicity is defined not by its elements, nor by a center of unification or comprehension. It is defined by the number of dimensions it has; it is not divisible, it cannot lose or gain a dimension without changing its nature” (Deleuze & Guattari 1980 translated by Massumi 1987: 249, original emphasis).

If fungal and rhizomatic networks are semiotic, as we take from Kohn’s How Forests Think, then mycorrhizaic networks are multiplicitous, they are becomings-fungal and becomings-plant. They are the very model for a magic that incorporates both affect and signification. This leads me to the structure and some of the basic rules for a fictional magic system: it must likewise connect people horizontally through affect and signification at once. For this reason, I chose to allow my characters access to this type of magic through music and other types of performing arts.

Characters who focus entirely on the semiotic element of the magic system end up using a limited, externalized form of the magic to disguise themselves or trick others, often to selfish or even evil ends. Characters who focus entirely on the affective element of the magic system end up becoming entrapped in a meditative, academic sense of deep mindfulness, and seclude themselves in temples or universities or remote corners of the world. The rare character who can allow interactions between the performative and communicative aspects on the one hand, and the affective aspects on the other, become incredibly powerful and shape history.

Also here's an old art piece I still really like.

Basic Synopsis (it's a little old, so I'm not really loving it as much anymore h):

"Izotz had just moved to Arcadia city and with no one and nowhere to start with, he quickly finds he's run out of luck with finding a job. He eventually runs into another man named Candy who directs him to someone named "Grimm", a therapist who lives on the outskirts of town. Eventually upon their first meeting, things don't go smoothly at all as they get lost in a forest together. Except this forest is very...strange. Almost as if they're no longer in their world.

Join the two on an adventure of friendship and trust as they navigate a strange world run amok with mad scientists and cryptid researchers! Will these two make it out of the woods alive? Or will they succumb to the sinister forces of Plura-Helix and it's sinister Djinn?"

Rosa Bohemiae // Rose of Bohemia 

 One of the most interesting maps of Bohemian region is this one: in a form of a rose with Prague in the center. It was originally created by Silesian cartographer Kristián Vetter specifically for the book Epitome historica Rerum Bohemicarum by notable baroque writer, historian and catholic priest Bohuslav Balbín, in 1668. It is one of the maps which were deliberately created as an art rather than an accurate representations of geography. 

The stem of the rose grows out of Vienna to signify the connection between Bohemia and the Habsburg capital, the leaves represent lands surrounding Bohemia. The Latin inscription at the top “Institutia et Pietate” (meaning “With Justice and Piousness”) is the motto of Emperor Leopold I. Below the list of the disctricts there is also an inscription: “Bohamiae rosa omnibus saeculis cruenta, in qua plura Guam 80. magna proelia comissa sunt, nunc primum hac forma excusa.” This translates as: “The Rose of Bohemia, bloodied for all centuries, where more than 80 great battles took place. Now for the first time in such a way created.”
