Even in his haste, Art still holds the door open for Patrick knowing he’d follow him in.

Patrick locks the door behind them, placing their bags down on the floor. He wastes no time going to close the toilet lid and sit on top of it.

“what? patrick, i need to piss man.” Art is standing in front of Patrick, making Patrick eye level with Art’s navel.

Patrick shakes his head no. “not in this toilet you don’t.”

Art scoffs, “what are you talking about?”

I can't believe I was right about this, I was half joking because I didn't think Wicked would actually be that much perceived outside of the fandom (somehow I forgot Ariana Grande fans existed and were actually gonna watch it just for her, silly me).

I guess the only thing I was wrong is that it was gonna be bad, as a Wicked musical adaptation it was actually pretty good and I've warmed up to it, I'm aware it was never meant to please the ideal version of the story I have in my head and it's fine.

But oh man...

I hope the Wicked hype dies down completely so our community can go back to normal, I'm tired of people invading a mostly queer space and feeling entitled to tell us that Gelphie isn't real, that we are seeing things as if this hasn't been a predominantly queer fandom, as if Gelphie isn't one of the most important things in the fandom, or acting super ignorant about the heavy political and social topics. Throwing hate to the book and misinformation without reading it and shitting on the original musical or refusing to watch it, dumbing down and reducing Glinda to being Ariana Grande and not being able to see her as a character outside of that.

Forgetting this characters aren't and haven't been this actors always, they aren't the actors. I do love the way Cynthia gave her own take on Elphaba, but she isn't the whole all in all of Elphaba, this character isn't Cynthia and has existed before her.

This is a very surface level explanation of the many things happening in the fandom, but I think it's a manifestation of how TikTok treats fandoms, before this movie, Wicked was barely in TikTok, I mean there were some, but not really much, and the fandom was the same people we've always been, and now people are treating it like a modern fandom without any respect for anything, without even caring about what this is, the level of entitlement and attempt of erasure of literal history for theater kids, queer people and sapphic ships in fandom is insane.

I want to clear out that I'm not saying all the new fans are bad, I'm not even talking about the people who've become new fans, but I'm just so tired of seeing how a fandom space that had been very nice and queer is turning quite stressful, at least for me lately, and I'm gonna say it, it might sound pretencious but I don't care. If you've only watched the movie, you don't know this characters the same way that a lot of us do, it isn't a bad thing because this movie and the way they are in the movie is very enjoyable in its own right, I'm glad for whoever is a new fan that this characters and Wicked the movie was so good to you that you've joined the fandom, BUT this characters and the way we, more older fans interpret them is very hard to explain because the book and the musical are different and we as a fandom have been exploring the way this two can coexist, therefore we integrate them into a way that we can see this characters as a mixture of both, or integrate more here and there, but always with a grain of salt of the differences etc.

These characters have been explored in ways that you'd never see in the movie, with personalities that you wouldn't only get from watching the movie, with conflicts that surpass what has only been presented in the movie. If you've only watched the movie, you really don't know years of interpretation and characterization and writing that we as a community have done for these characters and it does feel quite annoying to have people who's only interaction with Wicked be the movie, come here to talk to us about how we are wrong and try to give an opinion about something that we've been talking about for years with the same problems we've already been discussing for years.

Yeah the "omg the book is dark" was funny the first couple of times, but some of you act like children, I'm tired of having to see such awful anti-intellectual opinions, like we went through this before. Is it so hard to do some research? Is it hard to act analytically about a piece of media? Like seriously why do people freak out so much, I've read the book, you people exaggerate and twist the nature of this book to paint it like it was some fifty shades of grey obscenery or something. Do you even understand what you're reading? Or do you read in a TikTok comment that omg it's dark, and did you know? It has ... Sex

And I'm not talking about new fans, well at least not all of them, although I would not call someone a Wicked fan if they are like the people that I've mentioned prior who've invaded this fandom space.

I'm talking about people who think they know more than literally a decades old community that has cultivated their view of this story from the different mediums it's been. You don't need to read the book or watch the original musical to understand this movie, but don't come to this community feeling entitled to an opinion if you don't even care to engage with it fully outside of said movie.

No one mourns the wicked but I will sure mourn whatever Wicked used to be before this upcoming movie

Thanks! Yes, in October 2019, I went to London to see him in Translations at the National Theatre (I also had tickets to see him in Uncle Vanya but covid fucked everything up)

It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I was lucky enough to get an amazing spot where he had a monologue right next to me on some stairs.

After the play I waited two hours at the stage door but they had a party so he was inside the building for a long time.

There was a moment when he went out to smoke on the balcony right above me and I almost had a heart attack lmao

So after waiting a long time and all the actors having left I started to lose hope, I asked everyone I could if they had seen him but no one gave me a clear answer. Although everyone repeated what a wonderful and good person he is to calm me down because I was afraid to talk to him 🥺

But suddenly there was a moment when I turned around and saw him sitting at the bar of the NT having a drink with some friends. I didn't think twice and went up to talk to him.

He turned around with a smile and we started talking for 5 minutes. He was so kind and was interested in knowing if I had understood the whole play since I'm Spanish and in fact, he asked me about Spain and such.

Then I asked him to sign the program for me and I also asked for a pic. I had a black marker but he took a gold one out of his pocket to sign it because he said it would look much better that way (my legs were literally shaking there)

Aaaaand when we said goodbye, he shook my hand so I was on the verge of passing out lmao

I can't put into words how lovely he was to me. And I know firsthand that he is that way with everyone.

look man i just wanna ramble about romeo & juliet because it's a play that's near and dear to my heart

ok ok SO.

I feel like I keep seeing the take that Romeo & Juliet is REALLY about how dumb teens are and how their love was too impulsive and it's supposed to be a cautionary tale because their love gets them both dead.

And that's a fine takeaway I think! That's something you CAN get from the story. BUt I must confess it makes little sense to me.

I may be foolish, but I feel like everyone forgets about the whole familial conflict aspect of the play. like bro the first lines of the entire thign are like "hey guys there are these two families that ahte each other SO MUCH and they have FOREVER and now they're murdering each other." the first scene is about how the Montagues and the Capulets super duper hate each other so much so they're gonna square up in the middle of town with swords and shit after flipping each other off a few times

The turning point of the play, when it shifts from a silly romcom to a Balls Wrenching Tragedy, occurs firmly when Tybalt kills Mercutio.

THe actual romance aspect of the play is going FINE until this point! Romeo and Juliet the couple are pretty on the same page about everything happening in their relationship (even if that page is guided by impulse). Romeo is pretty jazzed at the start of the murder scene, and is in fact entirely unwilling to do the murder thing at all.

BUT! Tybalt is kinda a dick! And IS NOT willing to overlook the whole family-conflict-clown thing. And Tybalt's whole "i need to challenge romeo right this instant oh my god" impulse has very little to do with Romeo and Juliet's actual relationship. While a lot of adaptations have Tybalt see Romeo and Juliet being all Romantical at the party, textually Tybalt entirely is ready to brawl because Romeo showed up to the Capulet party at all and Tybalt is all Death Before My Rival Commits a Minor Social Faux Pas.

And Romeo murdering Tybalt and getting banished ALSO has little to do with Juliet or their relationship. His bro just died man. Yes it was stupid and impulsive, but man sometimes it's hard to keep your head on straight when your bestie just died (worth noting that Mercutio curses the family conflict itself when he dies!)

Like Romeo's issues all stem from that key interaction with Tybalt, who upholds the family conflicts above all else in every single scene he appears in.

Juliet on the other hand, is in the SHITTIEST situation. Her father is physically abusive towards her, and her parents are pressuring her to be married off to this random dude that is at best mostly well-meaning and adhering to general romance standards and at worst a massive creep (that's something that depends on acting and directing choices, I think. Paul Rudd Paris has never done anything wrong in his life). Juliet is trapped in this situation in which she is surrounded by pressure and abuse and familial conflict and death. It is reasonable to want to escape that at all measures, even if she acts impulsively and doesn't think through every single thing about the Friar's Genius Plan because god how could she in her circumstances?

If you're Juliet, your one escape from a shitty situation and environment is a boy who you firmly believe loves you, even if he has done some weird shit. If you're Romeo, your entire life has fallen apart because an ancient conflict resulted in your best friend dying and you getting banished for murder. What do you have to care for but someone who you think loves you and who you love amidst all the conflict?

To me, so much of the story hangs upon the familial conflict that the ending of the story is representative of a societal failure as opposed to a personal failure of our two leads.

No matter whether you see the relationship between local weenie romeo and local brain cell juliet as true love or as some passing fancy (i personally think it can be considered love but that's a different post for a different time, send me an ask if youre curious), it SHOUDLN'T end in several deaths and two suicides. The reason it does is because of a pointless family conflict our leads are brought up in.

here are some cinema tips:

-matinee prices are your cheapest times to go, this is usually before 5pm on weekdays

-many theaters have less expensive tickets on Tuesdays however Disney EXCLUDES their films from any discount pricing

-huge distributors like Disney require their new films to be played in the largest theater for at least 2 weeks, which is why a new film may be selling only a half full of tickets while other films are selling out smaller theaters

-summer classics usually cost very little to license a screening which is why they play the same ones over and over

-new films tend to officially release fridays but if you keep an eye on your local cinema almost all films have a showing thursday evening, though some large films do even earlier shows

-the busiest time at a theater is the 7pm showings

-most theaters have 10 minutes of trailers that play at the listed showtime but you can always call and ask how long the pre show is

-CC and AD are often listed next to films, these are for closed captions and audio description, usually the technology is quite old and finicky but is available

-one-off showings are RARELY provided with accessibility built in, this means there is not an option for a closed caption device or any auditory aids

-most big box theaters have t-coils built in for hearing aids to connect to and have more advanced (clunkier) audio devices. both of these connect DIRECTLY to the film’s audio rather than amplifying ambient sound

-seats marked as handicapped accessible are always empty spaces for wheelchairs, usually the actual seat areas are marked as companion seats

-many accessible seats are located in the center aisle of the theater, though some may be at the very top of stadium seating or at the front of sloped theaters

-any branded cups like coke or popcorn usually can’t be given out for free, your best bet is to ask for a water cup at the bar if they have it as they tend to have much larger cups available for free than the concessions stand

-all modern popcorn poppers have a cornditioner that blows hot air through vents at the bottom of the popper to keep popcorn crisp and fresh, asking for fresh popcorn usually doesn’t mean it’s fresher than the pre-scooped bags, it’s just under a different warmer

-any mystery screenings at your local theaters is a loop-hole to show a classic film or even recent dvds without paying for the distribution, if the theater can feign ignorance over what’s playing they don’t have to pay as much

-big box movie theaters don’t allow children into r rated movies after 6-8pm and almost never allow infants in, if they do they need a ticket if they aren’t sitting in a lap

-most theaters do have cameras in them, some are only being used to make sure you’re in the right seat, seriously

-if you care about the projection of movies you should seek out a local cinema or art house, they have unionized projectionists that load and test the films, especially the masking

-big box theaters usually have an automated system that hits play 30 minutes before and shows the pre-show and film, sometimes there are issues that cause the audio to not play or the screen to cut out. this can take a really long time to fix on a pre-programmed film

-the new screenX panoramic stuff being put in is bs, the only film shot on a wide enough screen for that is the newest top gun, the rest will just be reformatted (possibly with generative ai)

-big box theater chains tend to have contracts with different distributors to show international films, usually pretty niche ones

-movies are almost always programmed to be as loud as possible, bring earplugs if you’re sensitive to it

-most films warn the cinema about flashing lights, though it is up to the cinema itself to display signage. very rarely does anyone screen the film beforehand so always look into possible photosensitivity triggers rather than trusting the cinema itself

-the theater itself is actually thoroughly cleaned throughout the day, high traffic means the floor just stays sticky. marvel movies in particular make it difficult to clean the theaters themselves between films as the after credits scene prevents people from clearing out

-always assume no one else is telling the staff if something is wrong, especially if they’re understaffed and no one is checking on a lot of stuff

a lot of people are against cinemas because “concessions are so expensive” but did you know that’s where almost ALL income for the cinema is generated?

opening weekends (especially of blockbusters) take nearly ALL of the ticket sales, with the percentage decreasing as the movie continues its run. a movie in its third week may be bringing in about half of the ticket price to the theater itself, but the cost of keeping the film running usually outweighs the number of tickets being sold at this more favorable ratio.

many non-profit theaters are running almost ENTIRELY on donations, which is why many “memberships” are very expensive, all of that money is going directly back into the organization.

even private rentals usually make very very little profit, if any at all. cinemas still have to pay to show whatever movie the rental wants, even if the client is providing a dvd or otherwise. the cost of a projectionist to set up and run the film is quite high as they are almost all unionized and have a base hourly rate.

this leaves ONLY concessions. many suppliers have a minimum order of upwards of $2k, which is fine for big box theaters but often result in a massive back stock of perishables for art house theaters.

coca-cola in particular considers most cinemas to be quite “low” on their priority list, meaning theaters can order once a month and receive the “leftovers” despite being contractually obligated to sell coke products. this often leads to a shortage in popular drinks like cherry coke or diet, as well as a fluctuation between the actual drink sizes. if coke is out of their regular 24oz medium cups they will deliver 21oz or other sizes.

all this is to say that you’re paying more for tickets opening weekend at big box theaters that are trying to scale their profit. at smaller local theaters they are often making no money on actual films, which is why they still have pretty high prices on concessions.

Do NOT see the new Spiderverse movie if you have any form of epileptic condition or conditions affected by bright lights and rapidly changing colors.

I will not be spoiling the plot or anything happening in it, but it is important that people know, because ohhh my god the AMOUNT of flashing lights and rapidly changing colors from beginning to end was so rampant that even I, a non-epileptic autistic person, got a severe headache and wild overstimulation. They do not give a warning in theaters at all that this movie is NOT epileptic friendly from the literal beginning with the beginning credits - which is so, so sad!

This is a beautifully made film, it's wonderful, it's amazing, but unfortunately, it's not a good time for anyone super affected by bright flashing lights in rapid succession, especially those seizure prone.

I wanted to put this out there BECAUSE there are no theater warnings. Idk if anyone else has put it out there, but it is SUPER IMPORTANT!!!
