i’m glad you think, just like me, that they announced some of the cast as queer just for people to call them progressive and praise them. i’m fine with having a few characters not mention their queer identity and still be queer - i’m basically doing this with my own original story - because it can sometimes get exhausting to hear everyone outright stating their identity. it’s not in-character for everyone.

but when you have over half the cast never mention or show queerness then they just appear in the pride posts... red flag. trevek is a MAJOR example of fan service and stuff like this: they had zero chemistry, derek was always a dick to trevor, and now, somehow, for some reason, trevor is in love with derek AND we have a SECOND LOVE TRIANGLE. another few examples: huntessally never got together and never once mentioned queerness despite being set up to do both, and guess what? they’re portrayed in official art always together, with bi and pan flags respectively, despite never ever mentioning anything. karol was there for 0.2 seconds, but ONC realized they don’t have enough lesbians and forgot about trans and aspec people and decided to make her a lesbian. dan was probably made asexual just because his color scheme is purple, and emily is “part of the LGBT community” because the majority of fans hc-ed her that way so god forbid they are let down. they didn’t even tell us if she had a specific label, was unlabelled, or simply labelled herself as queer. what a slap in the face.

if you want to represent queer people, do it well. do your research. don’t make your characters gasp at the mention of a trans person (seriously what the FUCK). don’t include a kissing challenge because romance-repulsed/touch-repulsed people and/or aspec people simply could not do it. if you want to have a stereotypical queer character, that’s fine as long they have a personality outside of it and there is at least another character with the same label who does not adhere to the norm.

Summary thoughts: this was really good and I like that MW has taken the time to address the NE fallout before moving on to whatever is coming next, I'm mostly just excited for that whatever-comes-next now. I didn't expect this story to still be focused on the same planet, but it's cool that it was! And now we're moving on with more machine intelligences and rogue secunits in play!! And they mentioned the comfortunit from artificial condition so hopefully that'll come back into play soon as well! I feel like something is building up wrt construct rights in the setting and I'm very excited to see that, but in the meantime I loved getting this familiar romp through MB having a very bad day and working through its emotions while also trying not to die. And it was fun having the twist on the usual formula with things being so isolated and it having to handle everything while being off its game, it felt a lot more tense than some of the other entries just by virtue of the fact that MB's narration was so much less confident than usual, and it made it really nice to hear the fire come back to its voice once we hit that point in the story. 11/10 as usual I love this bot so goddamn much

Summary:

People say a cuppa-joe is a best way to start the day, but for you? The best way to start your day is when a certain cool-headed customer walks in.

"Let's have a good day people!" Your manager cheers as he goes to flip the "Please Come In." sign to face out to the public. You and your co-workers give out half-hearted responses but quickly fell into work.

As you wipe down the counter, you feel a familiar nudge from a certain bubbly girl. "Hey hey, Y/n-cchi~ Do you think that glasses guy's gonna come in today?" Kitagawa asks with little sparkles in her eyes, feeling your face warm up at the sudden mention of him you shook your head dismissively. "I wouldn't know for sure Marin, Mima-san's a very busy man and-" you were cut off by Kitagawa grabbing your hand (the free one, not the one with the rag in it.) and pulling it near her chest, a passionate spark in her eyes.

"You already memorized his name! That's a sign Senpai, a sign!" She emphasizes with a light squeezing. You and Kitagawa hear the light "ring ring~" chime from the door and turn towards the door and bow. Reciting the Coffeehouse's greeting: "Hello and Welcome to O'Latté of Love Coffeehouse. What can we get you started with today?"

And like a well-oiled machine you stayed in the zone, taking orders, making them, and sending the orders to their respective customers. After what felt like ten minutes, you look up to see that indeed two hours had passed and it was time for Kitagawa's break, leaving only you to man the counter.

"I hope he shows up today, good luck Y/n-cchi!" She gives you a well-manicured thumbs up and leaves towards the breakroom. You huff with laughter at the Highschooler's 'support' and continued on with making yourself look busy.

Hearing the bell chime from behind, you look over your shoulder to see two familiar faces walk in: Mima-san and Ichikura-kun.

"I didn't know those two knew each other.. " you mentally note to yourself as you turn to face them.

They seemed to be talking about something, both really not watching where they are walking-

"Ah! Mima-san the table-!" You call out only to watch the poor man get clipped in the hip by the corner of the table. Hissing to yourself, you maneuver your way around the counter and hurry over to the hunched over salaryman and the concerned college student.

Helping Mima sit down on one of the chairs, you ask if he's alright. The poor man responds with a shakey thumbs up, you frown and pat Mima on the shoulder. "I'll come back with some ice. It's not like I haven't done that before, so I know it hurts." You comfort him and left him and Ichikura-kun at the table to fill a plastic baggy with ice.

Handing Mima the ice, he says a pained "Thank you.." And moves the bag to rest against his hip, you hand Ichikura-kun two menus. His eyes scan the menus, processing them, then realizes what they were and takes them from you with a soft "Thanks." .

"Please raise your hand when you're ready to order and please don't hesitate to ask for more ice if it melts Mima-san." And with that you left the table to help a couple who were waiting patiently to be served.

After making a Double-shot Mocha Espresso and French Vanilla and Cocoa latté, you glance over at Mima's table to see his hand raised. Heading over there, you slip your notepad out of your apron and tug your pen from behind your ear. "Are you two ready to order?"

Mima stared up at you, his neutral expression unchanging. But soon his eyes shyly break away from yours, "What... What would you recommend Y/n-san?" You picked up his voice.

Blinking, you move the menu over towards yourself and point down at the drink of the day. "Well.. Today we're serving a refreshing Strawberries and Creme frappe. Cold brew, since the sweet tart of the strawberries would help impact the flavor of the condensed milk." You glanced over at Mima, only to flinch at how close he was to you. Practically shoulder-to-shoulder!

"He's... He's wearing contact lenses. His face is more defined.. Wow, he looks really handsome!" You couldn't help but stare at Mima-san's face more intensely, trying to save a mental image in your head. "That does sound good.. I would like to have- hm? Is there something on my face?" Mima reaches a hand over his face, stroking at random. Snapping out of it you shook my head frantically, "Oh, sorry! It's just.." You felt warmth color your cheeks, "I've never seen you without your glasses Mima-san.." You gaze back into his milk chocolate eyes. "It's a little.. Refreshing. You are, I mean-" Stopping myself from blubbering like a highschooler, you turned to Ichikura-kun.

"Whuh-What about you Ichikura-kun?! What will you have?!" You shouted, scaring the poor boy. His temple began to sweat, he folds his hands to himself. "Salted Caramel Frappe, please." Nodding and repeating the order while you write it down, you quickly rushed back towards the counter. Getting started on their orders, mentally punishing yourself for how you acted.

It took a short amount of time to build the frappes, topping them with their respective toppings and snapping the dome-lids over them securely. Picking two straws from the box and move around the counter with a hint of what others would call grace, but to you, you were just more in-tuned with your surroundings. Stopping at Mima and Ichikura's table you handed them their orders, "One order of "Strawberry Daydream" frappe and one order of "Autumn's Hug" frappe." Both of them blinked owlishly at the names that left your lips, you felt your embarrassment return once more.

"That's what they're labeled as on the menu!! I swear." You explained, Mima reached over and takes an experimental sip. His eyes widened a fraction, pulling the cup away his eyes seemed to shine. "It's delicious." His eyes meet mine again, he seems more awake. "Thank you for the recommendation. It's the right amount of sweet and bitter." He takes another sip, longer than the first one.

"You're welcome... I'm happy you like it! It makes the process of making them that much more rewarding!" You chime cheerfully, stars seem to fall around you. Causing Mima to blink slowly.

"...Cute.." You open your eyes and looked confused, "Huh? Did you say something?" Mima once again turned his head, he felt his ears warm up. "..No, it must have been someone from outside." You nod and point back at the counter, "I'll be over at the counter, if you are ready to leave. Please come to the counter to pay before you leave." You pivot on your foot and turn around to walk away-

BANG!

"...Ow..." You had managed to clip your hip on the chair seated at your right side. "Y/n-san!! Are you okay?!" Ichikura-kun shouts, holding your hand out. "S-See.. Told you I do it sometimes too..." A large hand grasps yours tenderly while another touches your lower back helping you to steady yourself. "Here. I got you, sit here. Hayate, watch her. I'm going to ask for some ice." Feeling Mima's hand leave yours, you missed the warmth he emitted.

Ichikura-kun sipped his drink and fidgeted slightly not knowing what to say or do. "Mima-san's such a nice guy, huh?" You start, catching his attention. Ichikura nods and hums in agreement, "I wouldn't be surprised if he had a romantic partner." You mumble just loud enough for Ichikura to hear you.

Ichikura fiddles with his straw, "As much as I know about Mima-san, I understand that he is single." You turn you head to the shy boy, your eyes wide. "Are you... Are you sure Ichikura-kun? ..Or are you assuming?" You worded carefully, Ichikura-kun nods "I'm pretty sure. When I asked him he told me that he wasn't seeing anyone."

You swallow, feeling your hopes slowly build. Maybe you should just take the plunge, "Did he say if he was interested in-" You were cut off by a deep calm voice saying, "Here. Some ice." A plastic baggy of ice was given to you, by a very familiar hand. A hand that softly held yours just moments ago, feeling heat rush over your head.

Grabbing the bag you touch the ice onto your sore hip. "T-Thank you.." Mima nods and brings over a chair from another table and sits down next to me. Mima looks between us, "Your boss said you should take a break. Would you like to stay and chat?" Mima asks you, you felt the butterflies come back. "If you don't mind me intruding."

Mima let's out a very minuscule smile, "You aren't. You can stay until your hip stops hurting."

That was it, you felt your affection meter skyrocket, you felt your head being clouded with steam. This man, Mima Takayuki, was too much for you to handle.. In a good way.

As you sat inbetween the two, they talked about how their week was going, what "Futami and Souma" did with either one of them, what shenanigans they got caught up in. You contributed to the conversation talking about your bubbly kouhai and other co-workers mishaps.

You let out a laugh at Mima's story when this "Futami-kun" practically dove to save his niece from almost falling off the playground's slide. "He sounds like such a good boy." You smile, Mima mirrored with his own tiny smile. "He really is, but sometimes reckless."

Ichikura-kun looks between the two of you, practically seeing sparkles shimmer and fall around you two. "Those two are like tea and sweet milk.. They bring out the best of eachother.." Hayate notes, he brings his frappe to his lips to sip only to feel nothing enter his mouth, looking down he sees that he had finished his drink.

He looks back up to see that the two are still in deep conversation, looking down at his drink, back at the two adults. He smiles to himself, he stands up and hands Y/n-san the money for his drink. "Well, I should get going Mima-san. I'm tutoring Futami-kun today. Will you be okay here?"

Mima looks up at Ichikura, then looks back at you. His eyes squeeze lightly, then looks back at Ichikura. "I still have five-minutes left of my break." He turns back to you, "Do you still want to keep talking with me? I'm enjoying our chat." You felt your heart throb, you nod. "I don't mind! I'm enjoy talking with you too!"

Ichikura-kun waved towards the two as he left. Leaving you two to talk some more, walking towards the direction of the Café where Futami's sister owned.

"I'm rooting for you... Y/n-san!" Hayate mentally cheers for you.
