✨ Pedro Planner - an update ✨

You guys, I was ready to give up on this project. I had the hardest time looking for the right printer, spent lots of money on samples that didn't work out, and it's so hard to design something that requires measurement precision in Procreate.

But then... I finally found this printer, and when I got the sample in the mail, I knew I have to keep going.

I know I say this about every collection, but this planner is a real labour of love, and will feature more than 30 unique monthly/weekly pages (yes, there will be some repeats because otherwise it will kill me). The plan is to get it ready in time for the holidays.

It is not cheap to print 128 pages in colour, and shipping alone will cost around US$15, so to manage expectations, it will be the most expensive item I've ever designed for the shop - it really will be a holiday treat! I'm committing myself to a deadline so that I can get these designs finished in time for samples and printing.

the need for control admidst chaos, the comfort of organizational aspirations, and the longing for colorful office supplies: a journey

i'm going to be moving pretty soon (likely in 2-4 weeks), into a totally new and different environment. and while there are things i look forward to about what comes next, i also know it will be a big and difficult adjustment and i've already had several spirals over it given my autisticness and anxiety (not to mention an unhelpful bonus layer of bipolar and adhd symptoms while i didn't have my meds).

so it's not at all surprising that after i went back on my meds, which always keeps me from sleeping well as i readjust, i found myself down a rabbit hole that went from i love the idea of planners/scheduling but can never stick with them because my brain just clashes with too much structure to oh hey but now that i know through experience what does and doesn't work for me i should see if what would be useful to me exists and then yay it took a while but i found a company that makes the exact kind of planner i would want if i were getting a planner.

then i realized that mochithings, whose website i was deep diving into that night, made not just planners but stickers and journals and sticky notes and habit trackers. and as somebody who grew up without consistent money for food, let alone the ability to buy things for fun very often, i've always loved to browse and decide on my dream shopping cart and then move on feeling almost as good as if i could actually splurge--because if you like pretty things and can't afford to be included in the consumer economy, you learn how to enjoy just looking.

so i did that for the first time in a reeeeeally long time, going through different categories of the things they make (notebooks! cat themed office stuff! goal calendars!) and piling everything i liked into their online shopping cart. then i went through and pared it down to what i would get if i 'only' had a budget of $100, because that's their minimum order requirement for free shipping. and it really was so fun, because i'm weird and also what's not to love about cute little stickers and gradient colors and pretending your most important decision is which kind of folder to get.

eventually, i pared the cart down even more, and more after that, until all that was left was the two things i actually went there for: a specific kind of planner and a basic habit tracking option, because i'll desperately need that once i live alone. but even once i removed the habit tracker, the planner--which seemed reasonably priced at $30--would cost more than $50 to buy because of shipping and taxes. and that felt silly when i could get a ton of stuff i also liked for not much more than that.

so i ended up re-adding a bunch of items to my imaginary order, though not quite as many as the first time around. and now the cart is just sitting there, in a firefox tab, because i can't spend money i shouldn't no matter how much i like all that stuff. but i also can't bear to move on from the dream of having it.

which is why i started this post by explaining that i'm moving soon. because yes, i enjoy cute stuff, and i have always (possibly to an unsettling degree) loved office supplies. but mostly the reason why i want to buy more things than i would normally indulge in, and implement a whole new colorful system of to-do lists and cute stickers (rather than my current strategy of frequently forgotten notepad docs on my laptop and a calendar app where i track actual appts)...is because the idea of it all just makes me feel better.

it makes sense, and i can picture how it would work, and the ways it would help, because i've learned through trial and error what does help (and sadly, what doesn't, which includes any digital systems that would be cheaper and easier). and when i'm about to be, as @actuallylukedanes recently pointed out, a 'single cat parent' to somewhere between 6 and 8 cats plus possible kittens, for an unknown amount of time starting very soon, the idea of actually having some structure once i'm in a new situation where only i can establish any structure, feels like a life raft.

especially since i've lived alone in the past, and i've always devolved quickly when i did, into a nonfunctioning bipolar mess with no tether to time or other people. i'm a lot older now, and i have family in a way i didn't back then, and boy does medication make a difference too. but that's my history, and i know how i am. i also know that the cats will be counting on me, and falling apart just because my brain does that automatically will not be an option.

so i can't blame me for gazing longingly at all the things i would use to try and do better this time, despite knowing full well that consumerism isn't a good solution to most things. i had to come ramble, though, because as moving day gets closer, my anxiety is going to continue to spike at random times--and i just keep going back to that open tab, like dreaming about a more organized and grounded me can make a bunch of pretty things suddenly more affordable.

Sorry for the radio silence everyone! It's been a crazy few months on the personal front, but I'm pleased to say that I have the prototype Pedro Planner on hand and I am in love 🥰

With the information I have now, the Pedro Planner will be priced around USD45 to USD55, including tracked international shipping (to countries I currently ship to as listed on Etsy). The final price will be decided after I have a clearer idea on the final quantity I will print.

To recap, the Pedro Planner will include:
