Guess which glutton for punishment started not one but two scarves on the same loom simultaneously?? Will it work? Who knows! Stay tuned.if it does, this is a hell of a way to use up yarns. Had under 200g of the blue (left), and 50 g of the blue (right), one whole shuttle of the shhh! In the pastel rainbow shade for the left weft and under 25 g each of three differing shades of sidar’s soft spun for the right weft

New loom dropped!
I got a handmade present from my aunt! I didn't quite warp it correctly, but the way I'm doing it currently works so good enough!
The pattern's inspired by aSpinnerWeaver's Reptile Inspiration snake pattern. I didn't want to weave something as wide, though it did en up wider than I'd hoped for, I think is still looks awesome.

franco colapinto + what gets lost in translation
R.F Kuang, Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence / Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quijote de la Mancha / R.F Kuang, Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence / John Ciardi, Translator's Note in Dante's Inferno
i've seen in the past days multiple interviews by franco in spanish that have been translated to english. there isn't a single way to translate, nor there is there a way to convey everything that is being said when translating. as someone that translates from english to spanish and viceversa frequently, a language does not stand on it's own. it has a culture, a context, mannerisms that don't really exists in the language it's being translated to, and all a translator can do is try and convey everything the best they can just using words.
franco is, after all, argentinian, and has spanish as first language. he prefers to talk in spanish over english, and with the rise of translations due to the amount of interviews he does in spanish, i've seen a lot of either mistranslations or translations that don't fully convey the context or the nuances of what is being said, and act like franco textually said that.
that's why i urge non-spanish speaking people to not take every translation as it is. dig a bit deeper before misinterpreting translations of what he said. language isn't just a mash of words that can be translated one-to-one and still keep the same meaning.
with that said, i want to dedicate this web weaving to @divorcedpierresteban, the ennabler of me making this.
#franco colapinto#f1#formula 1#web weaving#quotes#azda.weaves#this is a veryyy self indulgent web weaving bc yeah <3#kinda tired of seeing ppl drag him multiple times based on translations that are either plain bad or just don't have the context#argentinian and latam culture in general is different to european#and franco is very proud of being argentinian which is great to see#there's subtext there's context there's so much than just the words#ALSOO he's so much funnier in spanish ngl

harpies speak from their syrinx which is in their chests.
Cuinn got basic lessons as a kid like everyone else but was not able to continue learning and developing his skills once he was taken as a tiercel. He's trying to relearn it now using some weaving frames designed for humans which make things a little easier than the freehand/frameless style from his home eyrie.
Thunder Strike is pretty good but he's so focused on the end product that it's all he can think about when he gets to work. As a king he doesn't have a lot of free time to work on it though.
Terrestrial harpies don't have a weaving instinct but obviously they can still learn it as a skill, Wildfire just didn't care for it. He prefers to play with dyes and paints. The people of his eyrie produce dyed grass threads which the others can weave with.
#i legit know nothing about weaving so the frame uhhh just call it artistic licence#ice storm over kosa#these three all come from the Ama plains and speak the same language (tho Wildfire comes is from centuries earlier)#it's a really stilted type of speech. and kings are always expected to speak in absolutes#idk if this was for the in-character ama but i really just wanted an excuse to draw all three of them so

@doomhamster, no, damask is a way of getting a complex pattern like flowers or stripes with the texture of the weave, instead of a print. it's common in (older?) linen tablecloths and napkins, and still used in some home dec fabrics. it's often used as a way of getting a figured pattern in a single-color fabric (but can also be multi colored).

Been doing more weaving!!!! Everything above the first yellow stripe was done in a single sitting LMAO. I wish I'd put a couple burgundy stripes a little earlier in the weave to kinda balance the colors but oh well!
#im having SUCH A GOOD TIME.... gonna try to use up my whole warp before i have to leave in august#rn im doing fun patterns and trying out different things#but i think ill probably end up just doing a couple plain weave dishtowels to finish the warp#once i start running out of time LMAO#jawjackin#my crafts#fibercraft#also ignore all the little strings hanging off the edges LMAO i will be tying and cutting those off

Plains Aboriginal weaver
Mrs. Gai Ah-yun, a Plains Aboriginal woman, demonstrates the use of a backstrap textile loom in this late 19th-century photograph.
Mrs. Gai Ah-yun was a teacher of sewing and the matron of the School for Women, established in Tamsui by Dr. Mackay in the 1880s. The clothing she wears in the photograph appears in an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum. Together with the carnelian and metal jewelry, this is perhaps the only complete set of Plains Aboriginal bridal clothing and jewelry in existence.

Coincidentally my usable warp is like exactly as long as my dining room. Point is tho, i am finally done thank fuck
#already snipped them#need to wash them still. guess ill just do a load of laundry later#now i just have like 12 hours of cleaning#not sure why i did all of this all at once right at the beginning#i had in fact planned to pretend these were cleaning breaks and interspersed them. and then forgot#oh well#definitely realizing i should have done more weft stripes. only did them in the last two bc i thought changing colors all the time#would be a pain#it wasnt tho and also it looks a lot better#the ones that are just warp stripes (most of them) look very plain and boring#which is a little gutting tbh#couldnt really tell when its just the amount visible on the loom at any given moment but laid out flat its like. hm. ok#idk maybe she'll use them more if theyre boring and ugly ?#altho she's not the kind of practical handmade gift reciever who is like 'oh its too pretty to use i will tuck it out of sight forever'#so i guess its a moot point#idk. its fine. she doesnt have a ton of towels or dish mats anyway#weaving#cats tw#(thats their food board and one of many water dishes)#wow actually i thought i got like 5 or 6#literally only 4#and the first one is a mess that i am keeping bc i didnt hemstitch it and im certainly not gonna hem it today#the last one was just supposed to be an ugly washcloth for me but i may give it to her bc otherwise its only 2 ?#or maybe i have 5 ? ive literally already forgotten and i cant tell from the picture

Attempted a transcription of a (probably late) tang dynasty roundel medallion (https://www.chinasilkmuseum.com/zggd/info_103_itemid_25900.html)
#in close up its obviously kind of rough but it works for my intended purpose#which is to transcribe it onto rubber block material and carve it and use it to print wax onto silk to resist dye#(so everything but the pattern ends up dyed)#I want to make it like 50cm wide so it looks crazy#originally wanted to print it onto a small damask pattern silk maybe persimmon or rosette or curled vine but i cant find any of those :(#so itll have to be plain silk taffeta ! which is fine bc it is Enough and there are a lot of wax/clamp dyed plain weave tang silk fragments#but I saw one which was onto a damask weave and liked it soooo much bc its like two different patterns in one overlaid!!! crazy#I will probably eventually find a fabric like that but For Now i will refine my craft...#my art#tang dynasty#roundel#floral

i GOT to get a backstrap loom going one of these days too. i want to weave. i crave it. i loved making that strip of woven fabric that i now use as hand towels but i want more possibilities. the strip of fabric can only be so wide with the loom i have. but i CAN steal the shuttles from it for backstrap weaving. i could even steal the heddle if i want to do something that thin or thinner. but the point is kind of to. not do that.
#i mean for my first backstrap loom ill probably do something kinda thin bc i dont wanna commit to a huge project as a test#especially since im not very familiar with warping looms yet (only done it once) so if i do a little bit less its probably for the better#i also SO want to try tablet weaving but i need to make some cards for that. and also look up a pattern.#dont need a pattern for plain weave. just a good back and forth meditative rhythm.
