Remembering the time I was walking past the entrance to the Medieval Torture Museum in Florida and overheard a little girl in a frilly pink dress go "But Daddy, I'm brave!!!!" and her father very calmly saying "I know you are. We're still not going in."

Another one of my favorite programs I did when I worked at the park wasn't even a planned program, I literally was scheduled to do a completely different program but nobody showed up for it so I was packing up, and I hear this grandma at one of the nearby campsites go "No I'm not taking you down to the lake! Look, there's a park ranger, go ask him and maybe he'll take you". So these siblings who are like 10 and 12 years old come up to me and ask if I could take them to the lake. And since I had a free hour since nobody came to the scheduled program I was like. Fuck it. Let's go to the lake.
So I spent like 30 minutes just chatting and hiking with these two kids down to the lake, stopping to show them cool plants and bugs and stuff along the trail, giving them spicebush leaves to smell, showing them what pawpaw trees look like, etc. When we got to the water they splashed around for a few minutes and I showed them the little animal footprints in the mud and we tried to figure out what kind of creatures they might be from.
But the BEST part was on the way back when we passed by this cluster of milkweed with all kinds of insects all over it, and I told them about how important pollinators are, and how a lot of bees and wasps are actually very docile and don't wanna hurt you, and to demonstrate I patted a bumblebee right on its back. And we spent a few minutes just watching all the insects buzzing around the flowers (wasps and hornets and bumblebees and honeybees and beetles and butterflies) and the brother finally goes "wow.... maybe bees aren't scary after all"
And I was like YEAH!! Bees aren't scary after all! You get it little dude!! One of my favorite moments from that whole summer. I hope he still appreciates bees.

God this turned into a long post but i had an iguana for 5 and a half years and man. i loved that stupid lizard. i had to rehome him when i moved but he was a lot of fun. I got him when i was 15 from a shady pet store for $25 and they literally gave him to me in a paper bag like a takeout order askjdhkjsf.
That being said. I cannot in good conscience recommend an iguana as a pet reptile, ESPECIALLY as a beginner reptile, because holy shit. This guy was a trial by fire in reptile keeping LOL. They get EXTREMELY large and eat a LOT of food, they need a custom-built enclosure cus they get too large for anything else once they’re about 2 years old, and they have really high temp and humidity requirements that are difficult to maintain in the size of enclosure they need. And also they can literally put you in the hospital either through a bite or by lacerating you with their tail (both extremely painful).
ANYWAY ill tell you about my Lizard Experience:
Tiny when we got him, had him in a 75 gal. When he outgrew the 75gal around 18 months, we put him in a custom 4-ft wide 7-ft tall cylindrical enclosure made of tanning bed acrylics with a radiant heat panel, a 4-ft vertical UVB light, a 150-watt ceramic heat emitter, and a 250-watt heat lamp. So like, this is a bougie ass reptile setup LOL he had it good.
I bought a Monsoon Solo misting system to keep the humidity up, but that thing was a HUGE scam lmao it broke within the first 4 months. I literally could have bought 2 good quality humidifiers for the amount that stupid thing cost so If i went back in time I’d definitely do that instead.
Feeding is a whole nother issue. He ate about 50/50 mix of greens/vegetables with occasional fruit. The greens couldnt be frozen cus they’d get mushy, but I would literally chop up 1-2 month’s worth of vegetables at a time for him and freeze them in 1-week portion bags. I tried to give him some variety in his diet so it wasn’t always the same (and also supplemented with whatever fresh stuff we had as leftovers from food prep lol) but usually the base was butternut or acorn squash, parsnips, green beans, bell peppers, carrots, yellow squash, and zucchini. For the greens I tried to mix 2-3 together for each meal and it was usually collards, mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion greens, and/or red clover.
My life got SOOOO MUCH EASIER when i discovered Mazuri herbivorous reptile food (its the tortoise low starch diet). God that stuff was a godsend. It saved SO much food prep time, just had to soak it in some water and throw it on his greens, plus it was calcium:phosphorus balanced which was very reassuring to know.
Anyway iguanas are great pets if you want an animal that is super high maintenance and expensive to take care of and does not like you.
if any of you have had a pet reptile. what the process for getting it and how has it been to have a reptile. anything you wish you'd known beforehand or that took you awhile to figure out?

Also I know a lot of folks started following me for falconry content so I feel like it's very important for me to reiterate:
Falconry birds are not pets!
Birds of prey do not seek out nor enjoy contact with humans, and falconers do not keep them just to have a cool bird. The purpose of having a falconry bird is to hunt with it - it is a working relationship with a wild animal and is nothing like the relationship you might have with a domesticated bird like a chicken or pigeon, or even with a social non-domesticated bird like a parrot.
I know from the outside it looks like the falconer has a Special Bond with their bird, which is true only in the sense that this non-social wild animal is no longer afraid of you and now associates you with something it wants (food). It doesn't have any affection toward you, and plenty of falconry birds have been lost because they simply fly away and don't come back. It's just a fact of the sport that I think is difficult for some people to hear because it takes a bit of the romance out of it but that's just the way it is!

Once again thinking about how funny it is that falconers in the US are just allowed to trap a wild bird to use for falconry. Like they put 7 miles of red tape in front of actually getting your license etc but once you jump thru all the hoops it's just like ok :-) now go get one. And you're just like "oh, okay uhh. Just. From wherever?" And they're like "yeah from wherever. xoxo"

The epic highs and lows of living in the US South.... we r in much the same situation here in TN. Over 65F yesterday and 70+F the day before that, then woke up to this
Tumblr media
December didn’t used to be tornado weather around these here parts but it is now. Christmas wasn’t normally almost 80 degrees F two years out of five. Our temperature roller coaster wasn’t nearly eighty one day and bottoming out to thirty-seven degrees the next and climbing back in the sixties the day after that.
Is there such a thing as seasonal affective whiplash disorder bc yikes

Bro its so fucking dry in Texas rn. This is one of the "streams" we had to sample from. It was one of only FIVE sites out of 20 in this watershed that even had water at ALL.

Fun fact about J.D. Vance is that every person in the field of Appalachian Studies (which is an actual area of academic scholarship) fucking hates the guy lmao. You can't say the words Hillbilly Elegy in an Appalachian Studies department without people coming out of their offices to start shit talking the guy

Any kind of fabric is good, even old t shirts or pillow cases! However, BE CAREFUL when using plastic. In general i recommend against it, because it can actually cause WORSE frost damage, especially if its touching the plants directly, by trapping moisture close to the plant's leaves which then freezes. Cardboard boxes are a good alternative if you dont have any fabric to spare!
As for the straw thing, YES straw is a very good insulator but make sure its actually covering the plants completely if youre using it to protect sprouts! The very deep soil-insulating mulching is generally just to insulate the roots against the very long extended cold periods of winter, when the foliage is gonna die back anyway. For late frosts like this, the ground generally wont get cold enough to damage the roots; its the foliage itself that needs the most protection!
Also, many plants are able to withstand a light frost without much trouble! Pretty much all root vegetables are fairly cold-tolerant, as well as cabbage, broccoli, peas, collard greens, spinach, and several others. They generally can withstand down to about 25F and survive fine, albeit with a bit of frost burn sometimes. Warm weather crops such as cucumbers, squash, peppers, tomatoes, beans, etc are all unable to withstand freezing temps! They're the ones that need the most babying in this weather. Check the hardiness of your plants if you need to pick and choose which ones to prioritize!
Sys! I planted a bunch of things outside two weeks ago and my babies are finally sprouting but it's supposed to get down to fucking 27 tonight!! I don't have burlap or anything and there's no way I'll be able to get any in the next few hours - Do you know of any way to keep my poor babies alive? Should I water them with warm water tomorrow before sunup or something? (
If you’ve got some extra blankets or sheets that’ll work! Just wash them after.
Even trash bags will work! Spread them over the babies and weigh it down with rocks to keep it from blowing away!

Something so crazy is that I started this temp job in Texas and they paired me with a random coworker to live with for like 2 months. And when we met and were getting to know each other I mentioned that I did my thesis on avian seed dispersal and he was like "NO WAY I did my thesis on secondary seed dispersal!" and I was like "omg. Would you happen to remember citing any papers from Dr. Kwit, he does a lot of secondary seed dispersal" and he said yes and I was like "He was on my committee" LMAO

I know, objectively, that French is commonly spoken in some areas of Louisiana, but absolutely nothing could have psychologically prepared me for buying my gas station fried chicken and hearing the guy behind the counter pick up the phone and answer it with "bonjour"
