Shot silk in historical paintings

Shot silk is a plain-weave in which the warp is one color and the weft another. The result is complex new tints and shades wherever the fabric gets folded or creased. It was popular in 17th and 18th century, of course only for the very wealthy.

Big Ladyhawke news this week:

2 key costumes are included in a Propstore auction beginning 14 November 2024, in London. Both come from the archives of Italian costume company Costumi d'Arte. The company have also contributed costumes from the Taylor/Burton Cleopatra and The Good, the Bad & the Ugly to the same auction, as well as some from First Knight which are also by Ladyhawke costume designer Nanà Cecchi.

The Navarre costume comprises a helmet, a hood, a doublet, a tunic, a cape and a pair of trousers. The helmet has a metal visor which is fixed in position by a screw. It is made of fibreglass, with a wooden lining, on which "63" is handwritten in black marker pen. Attached to the wood is a faux leather inner lining that is adjustable by string.The doublet, tunic, cape, hood and trousers are all made of cotton. The doublet is sleeveless with stylish leather armhole rims, a mandarin collar and faux leather fastening straps with metal buckles. The tunic is fastened by a vertical Velcro strip and a cross lace. Boots are not included in the lot. Estimate: £5,000 - £10,000

The Isabeau costume is from the final showdown scene - the lilac-coloured dress comprises an outer layer of chiffon and an inner layer of satin, and has slightly ribbed sleeves. A Peruzzi costume label is stitched into its interior. Estimate: £5,000 - £10,000

Me trying to think up a way to tie Jace’s clothes into a further physical manifestation of the illusion of choice Porter grants him - remembers about how it’s like inspired by bodice ripping novels - realizes corsets/clothes that lace up in the back are literally perfect as Jace has mage hand so he can still lace them himself but it’s easier for Porter to unlace while he has his arms wrapped around Jace
