there's a volcano on the faction isles.

you mark my words; and mark them well: that volcano WILL erupt someday and it WILL bring devestation to the faction isles and it WILL play a huge, substantial role in the story of the SMP. there's almost not even a question about it.

Ryas is the capital of Tsayth. Not a lot doing in Ryas. It's really just the seat of government and the tax office, so they've got something central to always go back to. The city is mostly populated with illegitimate children who can't get a spot on a ship because they're bastards. The buildings, all domes built of white sandstone, are all along the coastline, no more than like a dozen buildings deep back into the desert. Most of the jobs in the city involve the ocean, from the obvious shipbuilding and repairs or farming the Shallows (mostly seaweed farms) to making textiles from sea grass and beach grass, and the extremely important tax agents. They keep the kingdom running.

The desal, or desalination plant, is for getting fresh water out of sea water. I haven't totally worked out how it functions since glass doesn't exist anymore, but idk, maybe they've figured out some rudimentary non-clear glass to make their domes from. I need to do more research on glass. Basically, they'd have huge domes with shallow pools of water in the bottom. As it heats up under the sun, the water evaporates to the top and drips down into a channel around the edge where it's collected as fresh water for the city. Thiras' job is to shovel the salt out of the domes once all the fresh water's been extracted.

That 'river' resulting in the Inlet is barely a creek. It comes from Llayad but it typically dries up long before it reaches the mouth. Llayad needs a seriously wet winter for it to flow. On the extremely rare occasions where it does, all non-essential jobs in Ryas are put on hold so they can collect as much of the fresh water as possible to use instead of painstakingly desalinating sea water.

The Chain of Pearls is where the pirates make berth, an atoll of tropical islands that was once a volcano, like, a couple million years ago. I stick it in under Tsayth, because most of the pirates of the world are Tsaythi, but really the islands themselves are a true amalgamation of all the nations, for anyone who doesn't want to conform with their homeland. Just a shame their entire system is funded by piracy. Oh well. It's a cool place =3

Varian and Hugo

Ha, you didn’t see them coming, aye?

Varian and Hugo! What are they doing here?

Well. When Varian was going through his villain era, he made himself some debts to a lot of not-really-nice people, including a few pirates. After his adventures with his own bunch of friends in “Varian and the Seven Kingdoms” (of which we were robbed) he was finally forced to pay it back. So – he needed money. So – he started to sell innovative (though often explosive) stuff to people who like innovative (though often explosive) stuff. Even on lower prices, if a buyer will come back with a review and notes.

As for now, Varian’s debts are long paid, but well, the Republic of Pirates kinds grew on him. He now has his own store and lab, run mostly by Hugo (as Varian resides mostly in Corona), where they research, develop, test and sell his potions and inventions – as a found family. The young alchemist is highly respected here, he met a few other inventors, engineers and magic specialists (although he still DOES NOT WORK WITH MAGIC) and is collaborating with them – all to push history on the way of great progress! But even with the best intention in hand, he would still prefer Rapunzel and Eugene to not know about his side hustle…

Did you notice those little tubes Hans wears on his vest and uses as diversion during battles/boardings/when someone is chasing him? Where do you think he buys it? He even has a special discount – “from one reformed villain to another”. He also helps testing new trinkets out - and Varian is always impressed by his detailed feedback.

Sundered Isles Playkits

I've got another Google Sheets set of playkits available to use!

These ones are for Sundered Isles, an expansion for Starforged that allows you to play pirates upon a cursed sea.

I made these for my group because the current Stargazer app is great for solo play, but doesn't really let you keep everyone's character sheets all together in the same place.

As per usual, these sheets include a Safety Tools page with the set of safety tools that my group usually uses.

Dear Acho, I know joining any faction can be a hard adjustment period, but for you especially, I know it was not easy.

I never brought it up, I wanted you to be your own pirate, but I can't say I wasn't surprised when I heard the missing Denholm brother had washed ashore and joined the Nightingales.

Not that you ever have to live up to anyone's expectations, but just know that you're always capable of going far beyond them. As all pirates do, you've got some rough choices ahead. Just know you'll always have a family in the Nightingales.

Keep shining as bright as you can, star – and look after your brother, he needs you just as much as you need him.

correct me if i'm wrong the people of ausones has the same heritage or culture to where hallis come from? (forgot what the isles are called)

like the religion to the ladies of water and wind are a bit different, like when halli mentioned that we have huge ass temples in ausones and it's kinda dramatic lmao

You're not wrong! At least not entirely.

Ausones as the city is now was founded by Kimbriki settlers. We're talking long enough ago that they've developed different cultures all their own now. Ausones has a lot of influence from other cultures as well because it's positioned itself as a trade center. (A lot of coastal or large river settlements would actually have Kimbric heritage or influence because of the way it's not uncommon for them to branch out from the isles, but typically they don't become independent. Ausones is one of the oldest examples and was founded in the continent's city-state phase though.)

The aspects Halli was calling dramatic tend to be the aspects typical of the continental sedentary cultures (large stone temples included). Kimbriki are semi-nomadic or entirely nomadic depending on the clan and jarl because of how poor the soil is and how bad the weather is for crops in the isles, most of their veg and grain is imported or stolen. Only the largest of their isles has a permanent city and it's used as the meeting place for the alliance of clans.

Ausones relies heavily on sea trade and fishing because of the relatively little farmland it has and it is located conveniently to control or have access to most of the northern sea lanes. It does have productive farmland however and its positioning geographically makes it quite a wealthy port.

They also share a lot of their gods because of that history but there are ones unique to each culture too and the manner in which they are worshipped different. Auberon's chosen patron gods, the ones he dedicates prayers to, are the twin goddesses, the Ladies of Wind and Waters. They are the city's patron gods as well and are among those highly venerated in the isles.

Ausones has a history of maintaining strong ties with certain Kimbric clans because it cuts down on piracy and raids, as well as their historical ties. Auberon's Knack is typical of Kimbriki magic, not mainland. The ability to cast into animals and ride with them is common in the Isles but not the continent. It's from their great-grandmother who was a jarl's daughter and a marriage alliance.

Ausones adopted the practice of sworn knights from the mainland. By the time of the story they are the only extant country to use that title since it had mostly been subsumed on Fantasia by the Nasenii practice of fideles due to imperial spread.

Additionally like all major trade hubs Ausones has immigrants from everywhere. A high percentage of those are Kimbriki because of how many jobs in Ausones have to do with sailing and shipping. They also have a large community of Ithellen refugees and smaller pockets of other immigrant groups.

TPKODR update and writing share

So I finally hit the chapter titled the vanishing Isle and realized that it's more 3/4 point than the 2/3 I thought it would be (unless something changes) and after I finish writing this chapter out....I'm going back and doing a edit/reread before continuing with the last part of it. So you may get some rephrased lines from previous chapters again but this one's about to be done.... except for editing... optimistically the writing part will be done by the end of the month... editing however sometimes takes no time at all or is the longest part it depends on random factors I have yet to figure out.

So here is the intro to the island that was promised about a week ago but then the OC's went....you forgot a few things ..and it turned into five chapters 0_o gotta love the OC's

Daimhín said, “all I see is rocks that make it impossible to move forward.” He glanced at the sea, all he could see was rocks that would kill them if they got too close. They were jagged and sharp, perfect for ripping a hull apart.

Oisìn asked, “Do you trust me?” 

Daimhín nodded and pulled Oisìn into his side at the wheel, letting Oisìn take over since he couldn't see anything but rocks. He winced as they were heading straight for one and just as the ship would have hit it the view changed. It was a tropical Oasis. Trees taller than he had ever seen before. They resembled pine trees but were far too large. The island had a few ships that had wrecked but it was not the rocky fortress that he had seen. He saw the faces of the crew as they took in the sight.  The relief that the Isle was not what they had first seen evident upon their faces. They anchored a little ways out from shore. 

@tragedycoded (this would be the mysterious isle I mentioned to you when talking about braith a couple weeks ago) although each crew member sees it differently one saw it as a nesting ground for sirens, one saw a wasteland and another saw decaying trees.

And last, but probably least, the resident pira- *ahem*... rather, traveler... who had the audacity to crash his vessel into the northern cliffs. Conrad lays his head in a small tent overlooking the import jetti and his beloved ship while his crewmen sleep below deck.. He swears he's gonna fix her up and set sail again soon, but he's too sweet on Charlie's baked goods. Besides, the men are enjoying the much needed vacation.

In another life, Conrad was a fellow magical boy to Charlie in their youth. As a young adult, Charlie remained active in the fight, while Conrad used his "freedom" powers to experience the world. They later found one another, fell in love, and fought together in an elaborate takedown of sinister scientists and the experiments they created using young magical boys and girls.

so i present to you...

KUERVO BEING GOOD WITH KIDS

like imagine one day one of the pirates (probably a heron like water) is walking down the street and they see a small group of kids just sitting and looking up at krow as he tells them a story about, say one of his heists or something from when he was on the run

and then the pirate is like 'huh, maybe the kites arent too bad after all'

and then he immediately steals something after but you know they remember that moment for a while until he breaks down or whatever and they reassure him he's not a bad person because who else is going to make those kids feel safe? sure as hell not the kestrels and they feel happy and ok around him than he cant be all bad
