Yes and no. I'm glad you asked this one because I think about this a lot! I would not call myself femme, or especially feminine. I don't participate in most feminine rituals. But I do wear dresses and skirts and stuff, and even when I don't, I read pretty feminine. The thing is, my body shape is just what it is. I'm 5', I have big hips, I have D cups. I also have long hair and while I would still read as a fairly feminine woman without it, it does add to the effect. I think I have feminine facial features, too.

Sometimes I wish I could experiment casually with androgyny. I don't think I would choose to be androgynous very often--I like bright colors and decorative styles that tend to read as feminine, at least in the west--but I would like to try it. Maybe choose it once in a while. I don't want to look particularly masculine and I definitely don't want to pass as a man, I just think moderately androgynous women are amazing and I'd like to try it out. And like, I'm not looking for tips. I don't want to put the level of work in that I would have to. And again, if I had a different body and could try out something else, I would probably still choose to present the way I present now most of the time. I like how I present, I just wonder about choices I don't really have.

I don't think of my body as something that is changeable or has certain customizable parts. That's me and my relationship with my body; I'm not prescribing that to anyone else. To me, I have the body that I have and I love the body that I have and I work with what I've got. It's no different to me than my hair; I have fine, somewhat thin hair, that just doesn't work for a lot of styles I like, especially shorter ones (especially because I can't stand daily product). It's okay! I wish I could wear my hair like that but I can't and it's genuinely fine. I wish I could be a little androgynous just to try it but I can't and it's fine.

I do want to wear men's clothes sometimes but two things hold me back. First, I either wear an extra small or petites in the women's section. Especially since I lost some weight. I like certain oversized items, but I don't like most of my clothes being oversized. It makes me feel like a little kid whose camp t-shirt doesn't fit and it also isn't physically comfortable a lot of the time; it doesn't stay in place and gets in the way. The second thing is I just don't see that many men's clothes that I like. If I ever find something from the men's department that I like the style and fit of I'll get it, but that's such a small selection it will never be a big part of my wardrobe. I like men's clothes conceptually (the idea of it is fun!) and I like the material a lot of them are made of but it doesn't work out for me much.

So yes, if I had a different body type there are different ways I would try presenting myself. I can't because of the body type I have. But I don't wish my body was different just so I could present myself differently.

Fuck it, it's late, and I wanna go to sleep, but I probably won't be able to until I've properly articulated this somewhat batshit gender social theory I've been rotating in my mind for a while now - I think that the current "crisis of masculinity" in the western world was catalysed by the invention of the nuclear bomb. Note that this post is unfiltered, unedited brain noise and bullshit

So, essentially, traditionally masculine personality traits are good for being a hunter or a soldier, but they kinda suck for anything else. If you want to, like, function in modern society, traditonally feminine personality traits are much better for that. This is why we see, for example, girls consistently outperforming boys in schools these days.

Now, in ye olde days(tm), society actually needed to have 50% of the population as potential soldiers to throw into a meatgrinder for a few square miles of dirt every 20 or so years. But at the end of WW2, the nuclear bomb was invented, and suddenly great power conflicts are something that no-one can win and are to absolutely be avoided at all costs.

So, given that a proper great power conflict will probably cause the extinction of humanity, society doesn't really need to have that many soldiers anymore. But people still haven't gotten the memo yet, and are still conditioning half of the population into soldiers from birth. And what do soldiers do when they don't have a war to fight? The recurring historical problem is that a lot of them become bandits.

The only real solution to this is *wesker voice* complete global feminisation. That is to say, the abandonment of traditionally masculine personality traits and the embrace of traditionally feminine ones. So long as we remain shackled to the corpse of masculinity, we'll never be able to move forward. This will likely be a very slow process, taking place over the course of hundreds of years and not being complete until long after anyone reading this post is dead, because frankly like 95% of people - man or woman - do not want this to happen, they want men to continue being traditionally masculine. There's a lot of societal inertia that has gotten us into this mess. This change will only happen as, gradually, over the course of many generations, people stop wanting that.

In the defense of bottom!Voldemort|Tom

I'm in a mood, so I've decided to break down my thoughts on this topic and I'm putting it in the tags for anyone who is interested. With a suitably melodramatic title.

The rules here are simple: if you know you won't like this, don't read it. If you read it anyway and don't like it, that is the definition of a you problem. Okay? Okay.

So let's talk about why I think it is incorrect and, frankly, offensive to claim that Voldemort|Tom bottoming is inherently out of character.

In order to have this conversation, we're actually having a bigger conversation about sex. Because that's really what this is about.

Something that has popped up in a handful of comments on my own fic is surprise that Voldemort wants to suck Harry's cock. Now, I'm going to be charitable and assume that the people who say things like this don't realize what they're implying. But the reality is that they are operating from the assumption that a man sucking another man's dick is, at least to some extent, weak and degrading. A subservient act.

This is both homophobic and factually untrue. A significant percentage of people who like dick also like giving blowjobs. It's an enjoyable, pleasurable thing to do. And even if the physical act of sucking cock doesn't turn someone on, there are so many other reasons to want to do it. Getting off on being the source of your partner's pleasure, for one example.

But let's move on to the elephant in the room: anal sex. Specifically, the act of being penetrated. The interesting thing about bottoming is that, contrary to what some people seem to believe, it's the more powerful position. Penetration is only happening because the person bottoming is granting permission. Even if that person has ceded total control of the encounter, the fact remains that they made that decision in the first place and could un-make it at any time.

If that agency does not exist, the sex is not truly consensual. Full stop.

Moreover, a strong, dominant personality =/= topping. There is no innate correlation. This is where misogyny really comes to the table. Bottoming seen as a feminine act, and femininity conflated with weakness and submission. Do I think (most) Tomarrymort readers are consciously thinking this way? No. But that doesn't mean the underlying bias isn't present.

There are so many ways penetrative sex can play out. Yes, you get the "classic" version of the person topping being dominant and the person bottoming being submissive. But you can also get topping from the bottom, where the dominant partner in every way is the person being fucked. Or maybe no one is taking a dominant role. Et cetera. This is a broad overview, not an exhaustive list.

Do you see what none of these things have? An assumption that topping=stereotypical masculinity and bottoming=stereotypical femininity. Even with a couple that likes playing with that flavor of gender roles, it's a choice they're making. And before someone willfully misunderstands me, there is nothing wrong with that choice. But don't mistake it for something it's not.

So now that we've clarified that being penetrated is not weak, degrading, or even inherently submissive, let's bring this back to Tomarrymort.

First of all, have you read the books? Voldemort is campy as shit. High drama and a surprisingly great sense of humor (his jokes are fucked up, but also pretty funny). He's not this hyper-masculine figure. On the flip side, Harry is not an effeminate man. He's a jock who will fight you.

So from whence comes this zealous dedication some people have to a fixed dynamic that puts Voldemort|Tom in the masculine role and Harry in the feminine role? Yes, we've established that sex positions are neither of those things, but we all know that's the assumption simmering toxically in the background.

I can't say for sure, but my instincts tell me that it comes from a shallow read of both characters. Voldemort is a powerful man who commands a terrorist organization. Harry is the good-hearted hero, defined by his capacity to love. And this can get twisted into Voldemort|Tom taking and Harry giving in a very reductive way. Even when the relationship is meant to be consensual.

Obviously, I don't think this is universal. I've read a lot of incredible takes on sex in this fandom, with different top/bottom/switching dynamics. And this is fanfiction, which means you can play with characterization to your heart's content. What I'm talking about is people insisting that Voldemort|Tom must top and Harry must bottom and anything else is wrong.

Why are you so adamant about that? Have you ever given it a moment's thought? If you prefer it, you prefer it, that's all fine. But when it morphs into claiming that bottom!Voldemort|Tom is out of character and bad, things have crossed over into the arena of the absurd. Like what you like, but be aware of what you're really saying when you talk about sex.

Not conflating bottoming with weakness and topping with strength would be a good starting point. Understand that there are myriad reasons a person might want to bottom. It can be a source of relief, allowing someone else to take control so you don't have to. It can be an act of manipulation. It can be a form of domination. And sometimes it's just because bottoming is what feels good and they have more fun that way. Or it's just the kind of pleasure they're in the mood for on a random Tuesday night.

No one is telling you to read things you don't enjoy. And no one is saying that fixed top/bottom dynamics don't exist in the real world. But it's ridiculous to apply a fixed dynamic to such a degree that you get upset when other people write something else and consider a fic "ruined" by it. You really should put some thought into your biases. It's good for you. But even if you don't, when you claim a sexual dynamic is inherently out of character, you're actually just wrong. So stop doing that. It will be a net gain for all of us, including you.

The thing about Dirk is that we don't actually know anything about him. Whatever he might've been at 13 before he created AR is gone. Everything about Dirk is filtered through AR's dialogue and Dirk's damage control.

A lot of his actions in the comic were direct reactions to AR's meddling. His sole interest in Jake could be because he's gay. But it could be because Dirk is a genderbend of Rose, and dating black-haired dork boys is just in the genes for them. But it could also be because AR is the one who's interested in Jake and is projecting it onto Dirk, given how insistent he was about it. Separated from AR, we learn that he actually has a huge amount of respect for his friends and doesn't want to muddy the waters with unnecessary baggage or his own vulnerabilities.

Hell, when Roxy assumed he was gay, he flat out told her that's not the word he'd use. Given that gay is the word for a guy who's into guys and not into girls, that's pretty telling in itself. A side note in that conversation, Roxy also tacked on "not wanting anything to do with" her as part of the whole gay talk, which again, Dirk refuted. Don't know about you, but that looks to me a whole lot less like "Roxy, I am indeed what you would call the flamingoest of homosecksulls." and more like "Roxy, with all due respect, I cherish our friendship way too much to inflict that upon either of us." Because what self-respecting friend would want to inflict a girl with an alcohol problem and a guy with a self image problem on each other?

Dirk expresses the Lalondian phenomenon of believing there being a lot more layers to what people say than just the surface words. He throws out a lot of word salad hoping that people will actually read between the lines. Unfortunately, most people who read Homestuck are not good at reading between the lines. So instead of "I'm not interested in Roxy or Jane, specifically." and later tacking on his comment of sexy fish hitler eventually coming to the conclusion he might be bisexual with a bias and no free female options after the clipping of the cast, he's just gay now with no twist.

His thing with Rosebot and Terezi isn't even because they're girls. It's because they work as splinters of himself, which ironically makes them perfect matches. Terezi becomes the obvious stand-in for AR, while Rosebot becomes a far-stretched reference to Problem Sleuth, in which the guys' perfect partners are just feminine versions of themselves created with the power of imagination and brought to life with magic bullfuckery.

I think the real problem with post-canon Dirk is that he's not Dirk anymore. He's AR's personality glued onto Dirk, and the only real time we saw his real self squeak through was after he started having softer moments with Rosebot and Terezi. The quiet and vulnerable Dirk that was overshadowed by his overbearing robotic AI brotherson, who cared deeply for the people around him but couldn't resist fucking with them just a little bit. The Dirk who hates outdated and stringent labeling systems that don't even penetrate the surface layer of his nuances.

That being said, HalJake is better than DaveKat and DirkJake. Since Hal was the one more obsessed with Jake and trying to convince Dirk that he was as well.

What makes me roll my eyes about the “you say he’s a bottom just because he’s feminine!” thing is that anyone who bitches about this can only imagine switching the roles and having Paul by a hypermasculine stoic (which breaks characterization) and having John be a hyperfeminine bottom (which is also OOC). I don't think that the original complaints are necessarily a bad thing, there is an iteration problem in McLennon fandom where Paul can sometimes be reduced to a weepy princess, though I haven't heard of any fics coming out in the past 5 years that actually made this mistake. But it does annoy me that fandom can only imagine flipping the script and having John be the weepy bottom princess. It never leads to something more creative or interesting being produced where John and Paul's roles, both self assigned and imposed on them, are discussed especially for the effect it had their relationship.

It would be interesting to explore John's femme qualities but I think that fans are hesitant about going there because they would have to admit that John's passivity in 1968 was induced by his heroin addiction which destroyed his life and his relationships. There's never any appreciating John's femininity when he wasn't on heroin even though 1965 is arguably when John was at the most soft spoken and open minded. I find it a little sad that John's feminine qualities are only appreciated when he was at the peak of his hatefulness and addiction.

A lot of that is wish fulfillment IMO. Especially since Paul fans are usually the ones driving it and it's pretty universal that we want to see him get railed, not really the other way around. We like him because he's so poundable. So it's nice that he has a built in boyfriend who's willing to fuck him until he cries, you know. And it's easy to classify that as top/bottom::dom/sub.

McLennon is very subtle in some ways because of the give and take between John and Paul was so weird and it's just really difficult for us as outsiders to grasp. John and Paul themselves are baffled and confused by it. It makes me wonder if part of their dissolution was the fact that they didn't understand how much power they held over the other one which meant that they couldn't understand why their decisions were having such profound effects on the other person. They seem profoundly frustrated and bewildered by the undercurrents of their relationship where they perfectly fulfill each other in all ways except one, and how deeply unsatisfying their other relationships have been in comparison.

I think @amoralto damaged the fandom for this in some ways because she ended up having a popular blog which meant that her interpretations of John in particular were xeroxed over and over. The problem with this being that I don't think amoralto fully appreciated the power dynamic between John and Paul and her bias against John crept into her opinions which means that they screwed up the fandom discourse. If you go purely by her public posts then amoralto appears to be under the impression that John was a hysteric that was perpetually shitting himself about Paul one upping him. There is some truth to that but it's also not the whole story because Paul's ability to pull the rug out from under John was always a source of pride, fascination, love, and eroticism for John. Yesterday rocked John's world but he was also proud of Paul for being such an incredible artist and he was always pleased about being the one who discovered Paul. He was always aware that Paul had a lot of power over him and John both reveled and despaired in that.

This relates to the top/bottom::dom/sub thing because this dynamic would naturally play out in an erotic relationship between John and Paul. There's the surface layer where John is railing Paul but then there's the additional layer where Paul is the one enticing John to do it by showing his ass off (like really, who do you think those tight cut trousers are for?) and inviting John to put his cock inside Paul. And then there's the part where John's butch attitude and even some of his violence was egged on and encouraged by Paul who was most likely turned on by John punching people out. Paul was not the slightest bit put off by John being a violent person or else he would have bailed within a year of knowing him. When Julia died, Paul is the only one who had patience with John who was getting drunk and getting into fights…meanwhile there's a femmeboi in the background making soothing noises and cleaning him up so that he's fit for company. Really makes the your mind run wild with possibilities huh? Who is to say Paul didn't say "c'mon Johnny, just put it in me mouth and I'll fix you up." Or something!

The point is Paul is ultimately in control of the situation. This is supposed to be what dom/sub set ups are supposed to be anyway, subs are the ones who dictate the conditions in the bedroom. But considering how John built Paul up in his mind, it seems clear that Paul had a lot of overt power over John too. They don't fit neatly into the dom/sub set up either.

They switched power positions constantly and they got a lot of pleasure out of dominating but also being dominated. Paul liked being on top and being on bottom and John liked it when he got to be on top of Paul and when Paul crushed him. The pleasure was in the struggle itself, not necessarily the positions in of themselves.

IMO there's a lot of truth to this! @zilabee has a really nice post about how John and Paul could afford to be gentle with one another and wrote love songs together. I think that a service top john/power bottom paul really fits this dynamic because it allowed John and Paul to express themselves to each other which solidified their mutual trust and their bond.

In a lot of ways Paul was an ideal partner for John in that he was someone John could have sex with that didn't have consequences (such as pregnancy) while Paul also had the feminine beauty that John really loved. (There's a quote from Yoko I think that John claimed if he fell in love with another man then that man would have to be extremely beautiful. Handsome is not enough.) John could probably be a lot rougher with Paul who could stand up to being tossed around a bit if needed but was beautiful enough for John to fuck tenderly too. Paul wasn't afraid of John's rough side and even encouraged it and decided to love it. In some ways John being a service top lets him express that roughness sexually with someone who won't break in half from being treated like a sack of potatoes. And there wouldn't be judgment from Paul either because he is still a man and experienced the same puberty and testosterone that John did including the same struggles with temper, the bodily changes, etc. He knows where John is coming from whereas a 1960s woman would not. (The transwomen, crossdressers, and homosexuals in Hamburg may have been John's first explicit taste of this. People who were familiar with what growing up as a male would be like so they didn't judge John for his proclivities and interests.)

Fandom is built off of ideas, people post headcanons or ideas they have and it inspires others to create something. If you want something, and it’s not there, then you’re going to have to give a little yourself. Stop posting about the fact that there isn’t that thing, and start posting about the thing!!!!

The addition or popularity of something, does not mean the subtraction of another thing. There’s no limit to fandom, there’s no limit to what you can create, so for the love of the marauders please stop acting like there is.

So I’m seeing so often particularly on Marauders Reddit, people complaining about the more ‘feminine’ depiction of Sirius in fandom at the moment… and citing jewellery, nail varnish and eyeliner as evidence of this?

Now, let’s make this clear. I have nothing against fem Sirius. This is fandom. People can do what they like. Don’t like, don’t read.

So what is particularly baffling to me is this insistence that jewellery and nail polish always constitute ‘feminine’.

Because to me? That doesn’t have to be true at all.

I also come from the Buffy fandom. Bear with me here. (Any BTVS fans will know where I’m going with this).

One of my favourite characters in the show is Spike. He’s strong, powerful, confident, dangerous, (a vampire) and to me, pretty masculine indeed.

He also…wears a fuck tonne of jewellery, eyeliner AND nail polish on a regular basis.

Now there are some people who like to headcanon gender-fluid Spike, and fair play to them. But to me, Spike is the epitome of someone who’s secure in their masculinity.

He wouldn’t even stop to consider whether wearing any of this stuff would ‘feminise’ him at all. In fact he’d probably scoff at the idea, (or punch you in the face for suggesting it, come to think of it).

I also think it’s not a coincidence that Spike’s look is grounded in the 70s punk scene, (therefore from around the same time as Sirius I might add), and it is in the flashbacks to 70s Spike that we see the most examples of his eyeliner and accessories, and of course the original punk accessory, the leather jacket, (something we also knew Sirius possessed).

Now to reiterate, NONE of this is to say we shouldn’t headcanon either Sirius or Spike as gender fluid, trans or feminine. Feel absolutely free to do so.

It is the critics of this Sirius portrayal that I’m speaking to, the ones who blanket criticise any and all versions of Sirius with jewellery, nail polish or eyeliner as ‘feminine’ and then widely call them ‘fanon’ or ‘ooc’.

If you personally prefer your Sirius more ‘masculine’, ‘headstrong’, ‘impatient’, brash’ * etc, then that’s fine. But Sirius can be all of those things and ALSO wear jewellery, makeup and nail polish. None of these are mutually exclusive.

Particularly if you’re one of the people who enjoys punk!Sirius.

My brother in Christ, 70s punks were covered in jewellery and makeup, including the men. And it didn’t make them any less masculine. Don’t you think Sirius would’ve been too?

To be absolutely clear. Fem!Sirius is also a perfectly valid interpretation, and I’m very glad trans/gender-fluid people are getting the opportunity to see themselves reflected in him (or her, as is sometimes the case).

People should just let others enjoy what they enjoy. The block button is there for a reason. But for the love of God I also NEED the fem!Sirius haters to STOP using jewellery and makeup as the examples upon which they base their criticism.

I thought we all knew that neither jewellery nor makeup represent someone’s gender. Especially not in a fandom basing itself in the 70s, where these things were even more common for men in certain scenes than they are today.

So please, let’s not return to strict gender stereotypes around clothing in an attempt to criticise a version of Sirius that you don’t like. Just because someone’s wearing makeup and jewellery does not make them feminine.

And even if it did, that wouldn’t be a problem either.

So in conclusion, Fem!Sirius can wear jewellery and makeup, and Masc!Sirius can too. These things are not necessarily representative of gender.

(there will be more defined logan x parker in the future chapters as well.) parker is supposed to be the "reader" character. i decided to use a gender-neutral name instead of y/n because that's not my thing. she/her pronouns and feminine descriptions are used, but her gender is not a major plot point at all, so you can totally still read this imagining parker however you want. i hope you enjoy!

“God, it’s so weird just going right back to school like nothing’s even happened,” Parker started.

“Yeah,” Logan agreed. “Five fucking kids are dead, but science! Calculus! English!” he finished mockingly.

“Well, four,” Oscar corrected him, Lily nodding along.

Logan let out a large exhale and nodded. “Crazy he survived that shit considering how fucked up the rest of them were.”

“Well, you know what they say about quiet kids,” Arthur chimed in. The other five immediately turned to look at him in confusion.

“What?” Fred questioned incredulously.

“What?” Arthur demanded. “They’re like actually really cool and badass and stuff.”

“Huh?” Logan inquired with a furrowed brow. “I thought the thing was that they’re like… kinky and shit.”

“Mate, what the fuck?” Arthur responded defensively. “Why would I say that?”

“Well, that’s like the thing people say,” Logan bickered. “I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about, but I’ve never heard anyone say that in my entire life.”

“Shut the fuck up,” Arthur retorted, making them all burst out into laughter for a brief moment before they all returned to a somber silence when they remembered the conversation that led them here in the first place.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to walk you to class?” Logan pressed, his pleading tone making it obvious that he was asking for his own sake instead of his girlfriend’s.

“No,” Parker laughed him off, pushing his chin off of her shoulder and his arms from around her waist. “The health room is all the way on the other side of the building. You’ll be late. Again.”

“Yeah, well-” Logan began to protest before his newest complaint was interrupted by a loud crack behind him that made the both of them jump. They turned around to see Zhou Guanyu staring back at them guiltily.

“Sorry,” he started to apologize “I just dropped-”

“Oh, no, that’s okay,” Logan interrupted, as Parker reached down to pick up the textbook that fell from his locker.

“Thank you,” he said with a shy smile when she handed it back to him.

“No problem,” she reassured him, returning the expression. “It’s the least I can do, especially considering…” She trailed off, instead gesturing to his left arm which was fully encased in a sling.

After a moment of awkward silence, the girl spoke up again. “Um, what class do you have next? I can help you carry your things,” she offered.

“Bio,” he answered, “but it’s alright,” the boy quickly added. “It’s not far, I wouldn't want you to go out of your way-”

“No, that’s perfect,” she interrupted. “I’ve got psych first period, so I’m headed to the science wing too,” she explained, lifting the heavy load from his hands, right as the morning bell rang.

“Alright,” Logan said, leaning over his girlfriend’s shoulder to give her an instinctual kiss on the cheek. “I better get going. If I’m late to Mrs. K’s class one more time I think she might beat me to death with one of the CPR dummies.”

Parker immediately bore her eyes into her boyfriend’s soul at his word choice, the poor boy not remembering his audience until the words had already left his mouth. Looking like a deer in headlights, he simply turned around and scurried off.

“Sorry,” Parker apologized once she turned back to Zhou, embarrassed.

“It’s okay,” he said, chuckling.

“Shit, we better get going or we’ll be late too.”

“You guys know Zhou, right?” Parker asked the group in front of her as she led the incapacitated boy to her customary lunch spot under the oak trees in the school courtyard. The two were met with a chorus of “yeah”s and welcomes.

“I hope it’s okay that I sit with you guys today,” he asked timidly.

“Yeah, great to have you, man,” Liam assured him as Lily reached across the table to relieve Parker of the extra lunch tray.

“Didn’t we have trig together last year, mate?” Dennis piped up to ask him.

“Um… I’m not sure. I don’t think I would recognize you in class,” the bashful boy responded, leading to a roaring bout of laughter from the crowd.

“Goddamn! He got your ass, Hauger,” Jack said through a fit of childish giggles.

As the conversation continued, Parker couldn’t help but notice that one of the usual members of their crew was missing. “Hey, babe,” she said as she nudged her boyfriend’s rib to get his attention.

“What?”

“Where’s Paul?” she asked, concerned. “He said he was coming to school when I checked in on him yesterday,” the girl recalled.

“Yo, Bearman,” Logan called quietly to the younger boy sitting across from them.

“What’s up?” Ollie questioned, eyebrows raised.

“Have you seen Paul at all today? Did he change his mind about coming in?”

“No, he’s here,” Ollie informed the couple. “I think he probably just wants some time to himself right now. Usually…” he trailed off.

Parker and Logan nodded in understanding. Usually Paul wasn’t the only Aron present at the lunch table.

“How are you holding up?” Parker inquired, giving the boy’s hand a gentle squeeze. Paul had lost a brother, but Ollie had lost the next best thing. His best friend. “I’m alright, thanks for asking,” he replied a little too quickly, flitting his eyes away from the couple before abruptly turning to rejoin the ongoing conversation to his right.

Logan and Parker shared a sad glance, but decided it was better to leave the boy be. Paul probably wasn’t the only one who needed space.

“So,” Arthur’s voice rang out, gathering everyone’s attention. “We’ve got Wednesday off, what say you all we hang at my place tomorrow night.”

“OMG! Sleepover!” Jack shrieked in a high pitched voice, eliciting a few snorts from the kids surrounding him.

“Shut up, Doofus,” Arthur shouted at him playfully.

“That’s not my name, Lecdumbass,” the other boy snapped back, overdramatically rolling his eyes in jest.

“Anyways…” Arthur hollered over his friends’ audible amusement, attempting to gather their attention again. “Is everybody in? You too, Guanyu,” he clarified, to which the meek boy simply nodded, much to the others’ delight. “Awesome!”

As everyone else agreed to the plan, Jack interrupted once again. “Can’t. My parents have been totally freaking out over all this shit. You know how they are. So, unfortunately, the only party I will be attending is Doohan family game night hosted at 15 Fairview Road. Sorry, gang.”

“Well, hope you have fun playing Scrabble with Mummy tonight,” Liam teased.

“Yeah,” Dennis joined in sarcastically, “maybe if you’re lucky she’ll let you have a scoop of chocolate ice cream too. With sprinkles!”

“Alright, fuck you all, I’m out of here,” Jack countered, beginning to gather his things in perfect unison with the end-of-lunch bell.

“Bye-bye, Doofenshmirtz!” Parker called to the boy’s back.

“See ya when Mama Doohan lets you out of your cage again,” her boyfriend added with a big grin, made even wider when Jack simply flipped them off as he continued walking away.

Dennis had worked his ass off all summer. He wanted that spot on the team and he wanted it bad. So, in the month leading up to tryouts, he had to keep up his training. And if Coach saw how dedicated he was maybe that would benefit him too.

After another grueling workout under the hot September sun, Dennis made his way back to the empty locker room. He could smell, see, feel, and taste the sweat on his body, making him strip off his soaked through shirt before the door had even fully closed behind him. He needed a shower ASAP.

All of a sudden, he felt the air knocked out of his lungs as his back hit the ground, letting out a strident wheeze. He laid there for a moment, groaning in pain and sweating even harder than before. Wait, no. That wasn’t sweat…

The boy wearily lifted his head off the ground, still recovering from the harsh impact of his fall, only to see the entire floor of the room flooded.

“What the fuck?” he sighed out with the little breath he was able to collect.

He slowly lifted himself back to his feet, ignoring his spinning head, until he looked down at where he had been only to be greeted by a river of pink floating in the shallow water. The boy sluggishly stumbled forward toward the sinks in order to better assess the situation and clean his open wound. The only sounds he could make out were his laboured breaths and the splashes of his feet meeting the puddles beneath him. Splish. Splash. Splish. Splash. Splish. Eva feels a bit like Schrodinger's Cat to me in Ep 3? In the sense that she's both Ushiromiya Eva and Evatrice. Head and Golden Witch. Human and Witch. Real and Illusion. Child and Adult.

Evatrice is Dead and needs to revive herself, but Eva Ushiromiya is Alive but hasn't fully gotten rid of Evatrice because she hasn't:

i’m afraid to express gender critical opinions because i don’t want to alienate myself from my community. my girlfriend is non-binary and i can never discuss these things with her because i know it would make her disown me. also she’s very involved in my local qu**r community and i don’t want to be outed as some kind of TERF in my extremely liberal town.

i have come to understand that gender is not real. it’s like they say, it’s a social construct, but one which they decide to cling to anyway. gender is all based on patriarchal roles and harmful stereotypes that tell us butch women aren’t real women, that feminine men aren’t real men, and if you don’t fit the binary you must be something in between.

haven’t women fought hard enough to assert their own womanhood in the face of conservatives who deny them their own sex because of their nonconformist presentation? who argue that gay men and women are inverts, underdeveloped, inferior?

why are we embracing the medicalisation of perfectly healthy men and women who don’t fit in, trying to “fix” the “problem” when the real problem is with the people who are convinced there’s something wrong with someone who doesn’t fit sexist stereotypes?

not only that, but i’d go as far as to say that women are “gendered” in a far more harmful way. they are expected to conform to pedophilic beauty standards from birth. that, i’m convinced, is what gender-believers truly are brainwashed by. i wish women were liberated from gender and could be free to wear comfortable, warm, practical clothes that don’t pander to the male gaze. being gender-nonconforming doesn’t make you less valuable or less of a woman. woman doesn’t mean anything about who you are or should be aside from the organs you’re born with. it just so happens that female organs put a target on you for violent men to fuck with. this gender shit claims men and women are equally oppressed. i’m so fucking tired of the “boo hoo, men aren’t allowed to cry” shit. women get killed and raped by men daily. we have our reproductive rights taken away. we are treated as lesser-than because of the body we developed. boohoo, men aren’t allowed to wear dresses and wear makeup and look sexy like women, which is probably so much fun when it’s a taboo, transgressive act rather than something you’re expected to do since hitting puberty.

The fact is tho that no matter how you look at it, no matter how insufferable she is, no matter how Out Of Touch, regardless of whether she’s doing herself no favours: Eloise is right about society and just about everyone else in the show is wrong.

Like, she’s not got the full picture, she’s blinkered and her political philosophy is not very in depth or well thought out. But she’s right, and I think that’s why a lot of people watching really don’t like her because she’s breaking the illusion. All in all, the 1810s were a shit time to be alive for most people, and you can “well actually” it all you like, but the Luddite movement existed for a reason, the Chartists existed for a reason, Porto-feminist writers like Wollstonecraft and de Gouges wrote what they did for a reason.

So when you keep being reminded that it was a terrible social order for women - in a show targeted mainly towards women for escapist purposes then that character is going to come across as irritating, because she’s ruining the immersion.

Really, her attitude isn’t more anachronistic than the dresses, or the hairdos, or the diamond necklaces (men and women had been advocating women’s right to vote since before Eloise was born, lads), but it’s a problem because people are watching the show for the sweeping romances and the general regency vibe, they don’t want to think about how the regency was for most people. Which inevitably leads to some incredible projection, when watchers of a show with the central conceit of only being interested in the love lives of the top one percent of the one percent of the British aristocracy acting as though Eloise is the only privileged person on the show.

And yeah, she is better off than most of the people who exist in all of Regency Britain (though if you were to take the show as read, Britain is made up of about 70% aristocracy, 1% gentry, 5% urban bourgeoisie and 24% urban workers), but she’s the only one whose privilege is harped on out of her whole family and social circle. 99% of the speaking characters in the show come from a posher background than Beau fucking Brummell.

And! Eloise is literally just about the only main character who ever has to question her privilege! And when she is in season 2 she doesn’t throw a shitfit, she’s willing to learn! She goes out of her way to hear perspectives that she wouldn’t have heard in her social circle! But the narrative punishes her for that, and that’s because for all the criticism she gets about needing her privilege checked, they don’t actually want her to learn, they just want her to shut up and enjoy the trappings of regency decadence as much as they do.

Also - I know it’s really fashionable to rag on “pick-mes” and “Not Like Other Girls” - but actually, no, “traditional femininity” has never been socially unacceptable for women the way being GNC is, and it is in fact ruthlessly socially enforced against GNC women, even more so in the 1810s. Eloise is a teenaged girl in a society that stigmatises her for her wish for more legal autonomy, the idea that she’s somehow the villain for not being able to enjoy “feminine” hobbies without seeing them as just another element of the way women’s education is trivialised as ornamental, is farcical. “Sewing is a valuable and useful skill” so is cooking, but there’s a reason my mam, and not my dad, had home economics lessons, and that reason is still misogyny, despite the fact that it set her up better for being able to operate independently as an adult.

Idk I’m just kind of uncomfortable that in a world of rising reactionary political sentiment towards women, and this seemingly increasingly re-normalised view that women need to be wives and homemakers, people feel that the person on the show who needs to do the most introspection regarding their politics is an eighteen-year-old who is vocal about the fact that she has limited legal rights, and not any of the adult men in the show (a lot of whom probably have seats in the Upper House!!!) who never mention politics at all.

And frankly, given the shower who were Having Political Opinions in the long eighteenth century, Eloise’s brand of semi-anachronistic protofeminism is infinitely preferable to Hannah “I refuse to teach the poor how to write in my schools” More, or Edmund “don’t read my big thesis on revolutions too closely it’s definitely not all lies and junk history” Burke, or even a load of prominent members of the Bluestocking Society.
