Concept: Reserve Course student Makoto Naegi.

Makoto is just the embodiment of that sunshine kid that gets adopted by a bunch of goths.

Everyone looks down at the Reserve Course students, even their own peers. That is except for Makoto who doesn’t treat any of them with anything but kindness.

Even if people are rude to him at first because they think he’s mocking or pitying them. But they soon learn that no Makoto is just that genuinely kind of a person.

They also learn that Makoto may be nice but he’s not a pushover. Any main course student or teacher that tries to belittle them is met with fury.

Makoto doesn’t even need to throw hands. The verbal beat down he delivers all the while staring them down with the rage of a thousand suns is all he needs.

He won’t let anyone talk badly about his fellow students. Even if he’s ended up suspended or in trouble for it.

That garners him a lot of respect from his peers. And so in true Makoto fashion he accidentally befriends the daughter of the Yakuza and some other powerful students.

Because the Reserve Course students don’t not have talents it means they all paid to get in here through their families wealth or through connections.

Makoto is actually one of the only students that comes from neither wealth nor status. His upbringing was a lot more humble compared to there’s.

How he got in is because of his childhood best friend, Sayaka Maizono.

She was upset he couldn’t attend Hopes Peak and after getting his parents permission she used her money and connections to secure him a place in the next best thing.

Because yes she’d miss him but also because Makoto deserves the best.

Makoto is rather fond of her and so she’s one of the only Ultimates that gets passage into the Reserve Course and isn’t treated with hostility.

It also helps that when shes around Makoto, Sayaka drops the ‘made for tv’ facade instantly. Revealing a bubbly yet sharp and perceptive girl that genuinely loves her craft.

But isn’t a stranger to the darkness within it. How even with her new class, Makoto and her group are the only real friends shes ever had.

They all notice that Makoto, despite missing his friend dearly always gets their permission to let her in the building. Despite Ultimates being allowed to roam freely wherever they want.

He knows how they feel as does Sayaka. She may not have put much stock into the whole Ultimates are better shit but shes more then a little aware of it.

And so she’s always mindful to never bring up her talent or music. Not unless someone else brings up first.

It’s weirdly sweet.

Some of the Reserve Course students begrudgingly find Sayaka not so bad and unfortunately for them she’s caught on. The insults fall into more playful banter and Makoto’s just happy to see everyone getting along.

Then there’s Hajime who thinks Makoto is insane.

Somewhat similarly to the way Nagito blue screens when he learns Hajime doesn’t have a talent.

That’s about how Hajime sees Makoto, because what the fuck is wrong with you?

How can you be so happy as an average person? How can you not be jealous of your talented friend?How can you not want to be part of that world?

Unlike Nagito tho, Hajime never voices any of this so Makoto just smiles and waves him while the man’s inner monologuing.

Don’t get him wrong. Makoto is a sweet guy and is the only one brave enough to stop Natsume and Sato from fighting.

But there’s obviously something deeply wrong with him if you ask Hajime.

Makoto is completely unaware of Hajime’s thoughts. Sayaka on the other hand…

“Call him crazy again. I dare you.” Said Sayaka in a voice many could misinterpret as sweet.

But all Hajime could hear was malice. His blood ran cold, he looked for a way but she was standing by the only exit.

“I..how did you know that I didn’t say anything?!”

She smiled, cold and cruel.

“I’m psychic.”

She couldn’t be..could she?

“I bought Makoto here so he could be close, yes. But also to ensure his safety. Being the bestie of an idol is not an easy position to be in. But I’m rather selfish like that I suppose.”

Her gaze pinned him in place.

“I won’t let you or anyone else look down on him. He is worth more to me than this school ever will. I protect what’s mine Hajime Hinata and I would burn the world if meant keeping him warm.”

Why? Why would someone like her care so deeply for someone like him?

She glared and oh maybe she was psychic.

“I pity you. Not for your lack of talent. But that you’ve somehow convinced yourself that’s all that matters is in the world.”

It was his turn to scoff and she sighed before resuming her threat.

“In any case, you’ve all grown used to the fact that Makoto’s a kind soul. But I am not so gentle. Try anything, and I’ll make sure you can’t even dream about the main building ever again.”

And just like that she was gone.

im so excited to see more of coal since he hasnt shown up much at all in the blog ... he kinda gave off a chill uncle vibe when i saw his reference sheet at first, definitely wasnt expecting that of him in the recent page, either way im hyped to find out what his deal is!

Coal's an interesting guy! It's still a ways away till what I consider his "proper" introduction (AKA when he shows up in current times and stays around), I just like having important characters pop up early in random scenes. Makes the world feel a bit more alive to me (also I don't gotta design a new bg character LMAO).

And yeah! You'll be seeing more of his personality in due time! Though I'll say he looks older than he actually is. If I remember right, I think i decided he was like 30-ish. The mustache does a lot of work.

Oh Tim 100% is the peaked in high-school guy like dude was having a ball he was super popular constantly had girls falling over themselves for him and he was Robin- the fact that Tim is so reluctant to let robin go is literally the biggest tell of all that this boy is trying desperately to hang on to how things used to be

Greasy, spiky, short hair the colour of dirty beach sand frames a strong jawed face with patchy stubble of the same colour at his chin. a nose that looks like it's no doubt been broken, set, and rebroken several times over, and cold, calloused, muddy hazel eyes right above it.

In terms of body he's a wiry bastard, was in good shape at some point but has since fucked it up and slightly above average in height.

Junko’s great and all but for me Hopes Peak Academy is the main antagonist of Danganronpa.

You’ve got the whole oh being part of the elite is actually really fucking stressful. And wow I wish I could do other things but my worth is entirely tied to this one thing I do.

Like we saw with Leon.

Then you’ve got them being a dick to everyone else. Like it’s one thing for them to be like oh you don’t have a talent our one school recognises as important?

I guess you’re nothing then.

But then they take it even further by creating the Reserve course. Ah yes let us give these peasants the privilege of being near us while also reminding them they’re nothing compared to us.

But also you know human experimentation.

It really hit home watching Danganronpa 3 and realising oh..any of these kids could’ve become Izuru Kamakura.

It’s just that they picked Hajime. Oh they frame it as a choice but no that kids fate was already decided the moment he was enrolled.

It would’ve been interesting if that ever got out. That Izuru Kamakura, was a Reserve Course student. That this beacon of terror was someone they all view as inherently worthless for being talentless.

Despite the fact that metric is one that only Hopes Peak uses and cares about.

I don’t blame any of the Reserve Course for wanting to burn the place down. The way they were instantly vilified the second they decided to rebel against the school.

Not only did they cover up the murder of a student but if this got out too…Yikes.

Honestly had the tragedy been less…colossal I genuinely believe Hopes Peak would be relieved by it. Sure they get some bad press but it’s one student, maybe one class.

In the grand scheme of things it changes nothing and they can all be discredited it.

Hell I can absolutely imagine a concept where Hopes Peak reveals Izuru Kamakura’s real identity and paints a narrative about this disillusioned Reserve Course student lost to jealously.

And despite the aid of the prestigious academy trying to help him, he turned into a monster. Even going so far as to bastardise our glorious founder with his name.

I can see them trying to wipe their hands clean of everything. Also I refuse to believe Jin Kirigiri was some unknowing man caught in the middle of this.

When he was the one running the place. And frankly I prefer the concept that he absolutely knew but tried to make amends with saving his remaining students.

With saving his daughter.

And being killed after refusing to give them up. Hoping that maybe just maybe he would be able to atone for the monsters he helped to create.

Junko’s also a monster that’s a fact but none of what she did would’ve happened if not for Hopes Peak.

And unfortunately only one of them got destroyed.
