-First attempt at fanart
Pic one: Mariner , he's the first one I drew , silly depressed guy who lost his wife
Pic two: Crane , I'm quite satisfied with how she turned out
Pic three: Lain , I don't know ,I think I messed up a bit with his character
Pic four : Warbler , she's my girl , should have drawn her bigger though
Pic five : Frost , someone please do my man justice , I'm quite devastated at his death :(
* I was at first tempted to draw Grouse and Condor too but I'm not very fond of murderous kittens

YEAHHHHHHH I think you did a good job on these! I really like how you stylized Lain's stripes, the jagged pattern is really really good.

I made this tiny canary drawing because I was planning on doing a fan animation, no clue if I'll finish it but I liked this frame
ohhhhhhh i love how you drew her. I have such a soft spot for just giving characters dot eyes, it always looks so cute. Thank you so much!!
#ask#commandercarbs#sorry for the late answer!#i have the memory of a walnut and forget about stuff constantly#fan art#c: canary

OH I love this a lot. i love all the little parallels between all of the different characters in this soo much + how you draw all of the different characters. Thank you so much!
I made a fan animation for @wavesalwayscrash for their comic Waves Always Crash! It might be a little choppy but I was fun to do, also my bad if the designs are a little off. It was originally supposed to be just Lain and Warbler, but I decided to add Grouse too
#fan art#lots of characters to tag#c: lain#c: warbler#c: grouse#c: the king#c: crane#c: condor#c: mariner

Do you ever plan to make any WAC merch? I’m a pretty fan of character pins lol <3
I would like to at some point! I would like to do stickers and pins and maybe some acrylic charms, but I just have 0 experience in this sorta thing (aside from like. Redbubble which I don't wanna use) and thinking about sending stuff out manually stresses me out.
Again, Its definitely something that I would LIKE to do it at some point! I would just need to research a lot more/ask how other people go about doing stuff like this and also like.... actually gauge interest
#ask#firerusty#its the same kinda answer i give when people ask me for physical copies of wac#would like to! need to do a lot more research before committing tho

I just wanted to ask if I could use a panel or 2 for a banner or pfp on social sites from Waves Always Crash, I love the art and character designs! I'm always excited to check if the comic has updated!
(Don't worry, proper credit will be provided if yes, if no, I completely understand!)
yeah sure go ahead! I don't mind that at all.

the comic is so dope so far :]
since you sort of alluded to it before, does mariner have an inflated/idealized version of canary? was this when she was alive as well or does it only start when she dies and he only holds onto those idealized parts of her? and would you say his remembrance/view of her or their dynamic is or was unhealthy
Doesn't everyone have an idealized version of their loved ones? Everyone looks past flaws their loved ones have for one reason or another. Everyone ignores the bad parts bc it doesn't matter, you love them. Mariner loved Canary very very deeply, even before her death Mariner wanted to ignore things about Canary or thought that he could fix things about her. But honestly her death has only made clearer into his mind those things he wanted so desperately to fix. Which is why he holds onto this perfect idea of Canary. He doesn't want resentment to creep in.
I don't think the way that he is processing his grief is healthy at all, no. But their dynamic in life was not unhealthy. The most I would say is that Mariner was pretty dependent on her.

Perhaps an odd question but it is something that has intrigued me! I have oogled at your other ocs / comics and I notice most of them are centered around humans and such! I'm very curious why WAC is cats specifically. Did you just feel like a change? Did a more 'simple cat society' work better for the setting?
wac could definitely work as a human story but there would have to be a lot of changes made. A part of what I like about wac being cats is that they don't have a set society like a human comic would naturally have. A small part but a part nonetheless of wac's story has to do with creation of a new kind of society. Before the King starting scooping up colonies and growing a huge empire, having large swathes of cats under one ruler was not a thing. They just had small colonies with their own cultures and while individual colonies fought with each other, there was no All Out Conquering War like the King had done. It has kinda just left the world with two factions; The Flock and the (former) King's army.
To create the same kind of story with humans would require a lot more worldbuilding in regards to like. how humans hadn't created a large scale society yet, OR would require more worldbuilding to establish a more thought out society and likely fall much harder on the politics that would arise with essentially the establishment of a fantasy roman empire vs how all of this affects the individual guys (which is what I want to explore). It's much easier to get to the juice of what I want to write about with animals where things about how their society operates have a much higher suspension of disbelief.
also they started as kitty cats so I wanted to keep them as kitty cats <3
Mariner isn't a very patient guy that's for sure!

asking some behind the scenes questions :3
When you first made wac, what was the general idea or concept like, or what idea did you base the rest of the story from? And after that, how long did it take you to write the rest of the plot?
The original concept is still the centerpoint of the whole story: what if a guy was so devoted to his king but then that king died and then he was forced to have a replacement and how much he would project his need to be told what to do onto the new king. The concept made me crazy (I loveeee when characters project onto others its so good especially if its bad for them) and I just really ran with it lol. It was actually around this time 2 years ago that I started getting crazy about Lain and Mariner lmao.
But yeah, that was the centerpoint of the story and where everything else trickled out from. Given that the centerpoint of the story is about someone being devoted and servitude, it would make sense for the story's themes to revolve around control and abuse. Why would Lain be so unhealthily devoted to the King? Abuse. Mariner being resentful and angry at Lain's servitude while also liking it and liking the power and control it gave him added to these themes as well. And every other idea just flower in from there.
Honestly once a few plot points clicked together the entire story was roughly outlined and developed in the matter of like. 2 weeks. And then the next 2 weeks were spent writing draft 1 of act 1. WAC had the fastest development-to-page-production turnaround I've ever had in regards to a story.
