Pathfinder Update
Today’s session was a little slow, everyone kinda talked a lot, and here’s the rundown, after the cut
So, we planned out our departure from Idle Crag, Tisiphone, Kii, Nik, and young Valka would acquire the artefact, the “Stormbreaker”, that Captain Lora’a Valka used to control the weather around his ship (a part of his prolific nature as a renowned pirate), that had been taken from his ship by the Port Authority of Idle Crag Meanwhile, Ivan, our new “companion” and his men, would set off fire works to cover our “work” if things got messy, while Captain Valka would get his crew to get the ship ready to sail. So hopefully we’d get the Stormbreaker outta the Port Authority contraband warehouse and be setting sail right away.
Captain Valka also entreated Nik to help him reacquire some of his lost merchandise (drugs), so that he could save face with his trade partner Prince Hekate. Prince Hekate is the one partially sponsoring Valka’s potion shop in Bostadt, using it as a front to move his merchandise (drugs). Finding this out Kii said “It would seem Prince Hekate has his fingers in a lot of pies”. Both Valka brothers blushed, as their dealings with the Prince were not simply business, and you know how catboys are.
As this was the last time we’d be on dry land for some time, the group made some last minute preparations. Tisi took Valka aside and talked with him a bit as they went to the Valka Tinctures carriage, to grab a few things. While alone with Lora’sae Miss Tisiphone remarked how while his brother was easy on the eyes (Lora’sae took this as a roundabout way of Tisiphone hitting on him, because he is the most conceited catfolk ever) he truly was scum, and for all of Lora’sae’s faults, he was probably a lot better than all of his other brothers.
Lora’sae explains to Tisiphone that the names of his brothers are sequential, and that his people have rather little regard for the males of their families (with him and his brother’s names being the name of their mother combined with a number, Lora’a, Lora’to, Lora’li, and Lora’sae being one, two, three, and four of Lora Valka, literally). Tis was a bit taken aback by the catfolk’s culture, remarking how it was so cruel, and Valka didn’t disagree. Tisiphone told him in turn that her and her sisters were named after spirits of righteous vengeance from some old myth (Valka thought it was quite appropriate given the nature of the Eriny sisters).
Tisiphone also remarked how, for the time being, they were allies, but come the lot of them returning to dry land she might reconsider their, so far, congenial relationship with young Valka’s brother as she was quite sure Lora’a had a price on his head. Lora’sae was rather perturbed by this, and tried to convince Tisiphone that his brother really wasn’t all that bad, which only made Tisi reply that she’d be keeping a closer eye on him. At any rate Tisiphone took the last shoulder cannon that was leftover along with her Twin Orb.
So the time came for Nik Kii, Valka, and Tisiphone to get a hold of the Stormbreaker. They looked over the building, and Tisiphone and Kii took the back entrance, picking the lock while Nik and Valka made a case for coming to the contraband warehouse, saying that that BASTARD BROTHER OF HIS stole things belonging to him, and he needed to see if they were in the warehouse. Somehow this worked, and on the way in Kii made Tisiphone and herself invisible, which helped a fair bit. Valka made his way through the warehouse, picking his way through things and making his way to  the high security lockup section. At the entrance was an ornery dwarf keymaster who really didn’t believe Valka’s story, and started being even less believing when Valka couldn’t produce any documents to support his claims. Tisi, now having made her way around behind the catboy and the tiefling, cocked her rifle. Valka knew that sound, and tried a bit harder to convince the dwarf of his case before Tisiphone got impatient. Unfortunately these negotiations were taking too long and Tisi just shot the keymaster. Then Kii stabbed him, and then Valka threw a bomb at him. The dwarf keymaster was thrown off the raised platform that led into the lock up area. He was downed, but not necessarily dead. Tisiphone then spun about and emptied her carbine into one of the other guards, hitting him four times and murdering him immediately. The other guards gave up quite quickly.
Kii and Valka were a bit taken aback by Tisiphone’s ruthlessness, and Valka stabilized the dwarf while she looked about for the Stormbreaker. Nik looked about for Captain Valka’s stolen loot and merchandise. Eventually, the group found the Stormbreaker, which turns out to be a device forged in the shape of a skeleton, which is seemingly sentient? (A second for sentient magic artefacts, actually, the first being that magic book boy who escaped from the Mage’s Guild that we tried to hunt down as a bounty, which ended up falling through). And so the group ran to Captain Lora’a’s ship with the Stormbreaker in tow (he folded up into a portable shape and Nik carried him), with Ivan and his men following suit quite quickly as well.
With Stormbreaker posing like an Arch-Vile from DOOM at the prow of Captain Valka’s ship the clouds split and the wind suddenly swelled in the ship’s sails and we were swept away onto the open ocean, with a vertical column of clear sky above us, and a dark halo of a tropical storm all about us as the storm headed inland.
The trip...is taking two weeks at full speed. Halfway through this journey Tisiphone had cleaned her guns a dozen times, Nik had gotten tired of working out, Kii had gotten bored of pretending to be a pirate and had resorted to using her magic for spritely pranks, while both of the Valkas had nearly nearly run out of the Captain’s supply of booze. At this point Ivan seeks a private audience with the Captain who kicks Valka out of the cabin. Kii, ever the curious and interested sylph, makes herself invisible and flies into the cabin’s window. Ivan speaks with Captain Valka and reveals that the island they are sailing for is a former Velakan prison colony, now a Pragian prison colony. Jodd the Butcher is flying to island to free a prisoner, who would certainly sound important if a dragon rider is flying all the way there to get him. Kii, invisible still, stands up, and interrupts Ivan, drawing her rapier, questioning Ivan further on who exactly he is.
Ivan wastes no time and partially disrobes, and starts undoing his bandages to reveal that not only is he not Joshua Graham levels of crispy like we kind of all assumed, but rather that he is ACTUALLY COMPLETELY INVISIBLE. He unsheathes his sword and touches it to Kii’s blade. Captain Valka, meanwhile, is kind of checked out, and mostly finishing what little of the liquor his younger brother hadn’t yet. Ivan tells Miss Kii that she certainly isn’t the only one who can go about unseen, and they both depart.
Kii tells Tisi, Valka, and Nik what she heard and saw, and asks Tisiphone if she can talk alone with her. Tisi gathers up her gun kit and comes with her, and Kii dimension doors them up to the crow’s nest and they tell the watchman to buzz off for a little bit. Kii confides in Tisiphone, telling her that she may not exactly be the only remaining member of the Velakan noble line, there was a legitimate heir, the son of the king and queen, who disappeared soon time after the Pragian takeover. She wonders if this prisoner that the dragon rider is coming for is him, and if they’re on the wrong side of this, and what Ivan plans exactly were.
Lora’sae, meanwhile, came to see his brother once more, practically begging him not to hold out on the booze, reminding him of how annoying he was when he was intelligible and not entirely sauced. Eventually Captain Valka acquiesced, letting Lora’sae in, and revealing a second secret stash of alcohol (Lora’sae had found the first one). The Valkas got to talking about their other siblings, and apparently they were still alive, and out in the world. Lora’li was last heard of in the Western kingdoms, living his life as an “entertainer” and “exotic dancer” out, which Lora’a had heard from Prince Hekate, so, the implications of Hekate gathering “experience” with the Valkas purposely is...plausible. As for Lora’to he was last heard of leading some of the Northwards invasion that Pragia was performing out of Velakor into the Southerlands (of course a fucking Valka is responsible for that disaster...). Lora’a said, though, that he was a bit proud of Lora’sae, as he was actually doing something for the Valka Tinctures company after it’s ignominious end, wasn’t being a whore for royalty, or leading in such murderous ventures as himself or Lora’to.
“If I ever meet them (the other Valka brothers), what should I tell them about you?”
“Tell them whatever you want… It’s not like you’d listen to me.”
“I’ll tell them… you’re doing a good job.”
Young Valka tears up and the brothers hug.
Why do we keep ending on wholesome Valka brother moments?

RPG Minis Guide: Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica (Rakdos)
Tumblr media
The next round of miniatures will be focusing on the Rakdos! You can see my prior round ups for Gruul, Dimir, and Golgari
Rakdos was fun to pull together. There’s a lovely spread from actually horrifying to honestly a bit silly, and i think that fits best for whatever “vibe” you want at a time. Plus a lot of the minis can be free handed and have minor alterations made to have some more... unsettling details.

Murder Crow
Great dark birds the size of a horse, murder-crows are creatures drawn to the places of the dead, undead scavengers that prefer to haunt over those places where they might feast on corpses. These deadly avians aren’t necessarily tied to living giant ravens, though – the Tome of Horrors casts them as the souls of dead birds condensing into a single terrible scavenger. Murder-crows are fond of going for the eyes in battle, preferring to stay airborne and moving out of reach as much of possible to exploit the power of flight, so they’re going to want to stick to either areas with open skies or large enough confined spaces to be able to exploit that mobility. Looking at the stat block, they may not be brighter than regular ravens, mind you, but let’s keep in mind we’re talking about “not brighter” than some of the most intelligent birds in the world. These things are probably tool users, too, if they feel like bothering, and corvids have exhibited spontaneous tool use. If the door isn’t locked, it won’t stop a murder-crow from opening it. For one final touch, they explode dramatically when slain, releasing a flock of undead ravens that lash out madly. I’m not sure about that bit mechanically – a CR 5 monster directly spawning a CR 9 swarm? – but from a thematic point of view, there’s a lot to have fun with there if you don’t mind working around the clunkiness.
Fittingly for a lich such as he, the cloud giant wizard Parsurian has a massive carrion crow just small enough to lurk on his shoulder as a familiar. The undead raven often flies about, looking for victims or just keeping an eye on the undead giant’s lands, and its soul is tied to the same phylactery as the lich’s, unable to truly slip into death. Instead, the undying familiar explodes into a murder of semi-spectral ravens, pecking and slashing at foes until they can escape and dissolve into the night to whisper word of their mistreatment into their master’s rotted ear.
The lady of carrion, cannibalism, and ghouls, the demoness Yaziri uses great, terrible crows as big as a man to watch over her gloomy shrines and the terrible places of the dead where ghuls reign over her cults. The murder crows are treated like pampered pets while their living cousins are caught and slaughtered for feasts, their bones stitched into a giant raven’s corpse by a ghul. This fiendish ritual creates a murder crow from the desecrated corpse, eager to hunt and feast on the slain once more.
Great and terrible hooded crows fly before the gloomy weather that spreads from a dark tower to lash at neighboring realms. The crows are a manifestation of the cursed lady of that cursed land, reflecting her dark obsessions and undying passions as she broods, and in her madness, the land reflects its mistress, lashing out at the world around itself. When slain, these storm crows burst into terrible wisps of thunder and lightning that slash at anyone nearby (5d6 damage in a 30 foot burst, half electricity, half sonic). Their talons gleam with the lightning at the storm cloud’s heart and they can issue thundering, stunning caw with their beaks (instead of blinding with their beak).
- Tome of Horrors Complete 440
If you’re looking for ravens for comparison, Paizo introduced giant ravens in Pathfinder #97 on page 82, while the raven familiar is in the Bestiary on page 133.

HBO Max New Releases: February 2021
https://ift.tt/2MlHkNh
When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

The rest of HBO Max’s February 2021 offerings are uncommonly film heavy. The other two original movies of note are quite different from one another. There is No “I” in Threesome arrives on Feb. 11 and the decidedly more family friendly Tom & Jerry premieres on Feb. 26.
HBO Max will feature the U.S. premiere of It’s a Sin on Feb. 18. Beyond that, however, it’s another round of intriguing library title additions. A whole host of Batman films and DC properties arrive throughout the month including Batman (1989) and Aquaman (2018).
Here is everything else coming to HBO Max this month.

Try using collective nouns when describe groups of things. This gives more flavor to your stories making your players more interested. . What sounds more interesting to you? . "15 of the necromancer's crows fly over the party to watch them fight the summoned undead" Or " A murder of 15 crows controlled by the necromancer glide over the battlefield as they spy on the squad of adventures preparing to engage with his horde of dominated zombies🧟🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧟🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧟!" . . Okay that was a little exaggerated but you get the point right? A little imaginative effort goes a long way, giving your players more fun and making it a better adventure for everyone. . Theme Bestiary: Witchcrow
Tumblr media
CR 3
Chaotic Evil Small Magical Beast
Pathfinder Bestiary 5, pg. 277
Avaricious, spell-hungry little monsters attracted to shows of magic like vultures to carrion, Witchcrows seek out scrolls, rings, tomes, potions, and whatever other magical items they can hold in their talons and beak to carry them off to their nests. Intelligent, cruel, and cunning, Witchcrows love little more than sewing anguish and sorrow into populations between their frequent thefts, cackling into the sky as crows do whenever they witness a hapless human succumb to their curses.
Unlike the last two entries, Witchcrows are very adept at joining combat. Their slashing talons can cause nasty wounds to low-level parties, and their 60-foot flight speed and possession of the Flyby Attack feat means they can swoop in and slash at an unfortunate target before dashing out of reach straight into the air. Without some means of striking them from a long range, they can pick apart their targets round by round. If a party DOES prove to be especially troublesome, a Witchcrow may simply dive in to steal whatever magical item caught their eye (enchanted with a permanent Detect Magic) before taking off into the sky and sending the party on a hunt to reclaim their gear.
They are not all theft and pointy injury, though. Witchcrows, in addition to a handful of defensive spells that make even seeing the damned creature a chore, have three Witch hexes, including the ever-horrible Misfortune hex, which forces anyone under it to roll twice for every combat roll and take the lower result... but making it infinitely worse is their possession of Cackle, letting the crow use its move action to extend the duration of Misfortune (or Evil Eye) by one round. Because it can hover in midair, a Witchcrow can use Misfortune into Cackle while staying infuriatingly out of reach, an especially dangerous tactic if the Witchcrow has company (which it usually does). The little monster can curse you horribly and then laugh about it for a straight minute as its friends pick you apart!
If your party is not opposed to bargaining with the evil little monster, though, it can be talked out of destructive actions... Or, more accurately, bribed out of them. For the right price (magical items, spell knowledge, information, shiny magical items, etc) a Witchcrow can be bought off, and even have its allegiance secured for a short while. If you’re especially convincing, you can cause an entire murder of Witchcrows to congregate and use Apportation. Giving 12+ Witchcrows a solid minute to concentrate allows them to create a 1-minute Teleportation Circle that can send anyone that steps inside up to 1,700 miles in any direction. Witchcrows loathe using this ability, especially if it’s to help out Good-aligned folk, but with a hefty enough bribe you can make them toss aside their malicious morals for a few minutes.
You can read more about them here.

Lion of God
I am in the forest west of Ione, where rowan and willow yield to fir and larch, when I find the child. He lies beneath a juniper bush, legs pulled up to his chest in a meager attempt to conserve body heat. He is, I think, no more than ten, and does not stir when I approach. He wears a homespun tunic and pants, torn by branches and briars, and his feet are bare save for a thick layer of dirt. I remind myself that I am no longer compelled to help him, yet kneeling at his side, I see the paleness of his skin. He is cold to the touch. It has been more than a week since the vernal rains ceased, but a chill still lingers in the air. Were I to leave the child here, he would surely die. Pushing back the sword at my hip, I take him into my arms.
I travel south a half league, making camp in the evening shadow of a granite outcropping. The ground is dry here, and the stone will do better than wood to absorb heat. Sheltering the child in a rain-smoothed crevasse, I wrap him in my blanket and set a fire to keep him warm. There is a stream but a few minutes northwest, yet by the time I return carrying water, he has not stirred. I have treated ailments of the cold before, of myself and my fellows, but I am no apothecary. Never have I treated one so young. I do what I am able with what little I have, preparing a thin herbal tea and heating several spare rags that I place on his chest and neck. For now, there is little else I can do.
I remove the sword from my hip and kneel to face the fire. Despite the warmth it radiates, I am cold. I close my eyes and bow as far as I am able. “O Lord Almighty,” I begin, “to whom all glory be, I give You thanks upon this eve for the bounties You have bestowed upon me.” The cold does not stir. I lick my lips, and my nose brushes the long grass. “You, who is all-powerful. You, who is all-knowing. Guide me upon Your path, O Lord…”
“Mama…” I rise from my bow and turn to look at the child. His head rocks to the side, though his eyes remain closed. His small mouth is twisted into a frown. “Mama,” he mumbles again. I stand and take the small cup of tea I have left to keep warm by the fire. He does not wake when I lift his head in my hand, nor when I pour the tea into his mouth. He is still cool to the touch. After replacing the rags on his body, I return to kneeling by the fire.
“O Lord Almighty, to whom all glory be…”
Shortly after the vernal rains of my sixth year, a tribe of wandering flood folk passed through my family’s lands. In exchange for knowledge and goods from the south, my father provided them shelter on our grounds for three days. My mother forbade me from speaking with them unaccompanied, but her order did not deter me from slipping out my bedroom window.
I had never seen any quite as curious as this tribe, and I cannot say that I have seen any since. I was reminded of the peasants and commoners that my parents employed, clothed as this tribe was in a patchwork of cloths and hides. They were unwashed and smelled of the land, and they moved with a fatigue that I had never thought possible. It wasn’t until years later that I realized they had spent several hard days travelling to cross the southern flood plains before the vernal rains began.
Despite their fatigue, the tribes-people treated me cordially. They gave me sweet gum-treats from far-off lands and showed me jewelry and stones that glittered in the firelight. There was an older man, one whom I remember only as Pathfinder. His face was a maze of creases crusted with dirt, giving him the appearance of something wild and not quite human. He was kind, however, and he took me on his knee to tell me of the world outside the kingdom. He told me of the Laurek Desert, stretching on for miles before rising up to the sharp, snowy peaks of the Sou-San Mountains. He told me of the Buol Cliffs on the southernmost shore of Léande, so high up that not even the flood waters can reach them. He told me of the white-eyed squirrels of the Telven Forest, of the boat tribes and their festival of kites, of the flood tribes to our north that live among the ice. As a child for whom the whole world was the twelve hundred acres of their father’s land, I could not fathom travelling from one end of the continent to the other, and I wanted for nothing more than to travel with this flood tribe. As the child of nobility, however, that was never to be my fate.
When I awaken in the morrow, a thick grey fog has settled over the land. Although the child has yet to wake, he has warmed considerably in the night. Rekindling the fire, I make sure to warm his rags before setting off to the stream again. It is difficult to see more than twenty feet afront, yet the path is still fresh in my mind and I do not stumble or lose my way in the uneven and rocky terrain. I linger at the stream long enough only to fill my kettle and wash the night from my face.
I return to find that the child has rolled away from the rocky outcrop, still a safe distance from the fire. After setting the kettle on a flat stone, I attend to the child. Bleary eyes the color of rosewood open to look at me. With care, I help him sit against the granite again, then take the rags that have fallen from his neck and replace them. He attempts to stop me, but I clamp down on his arm. “Be still. It is to help you.” He obeys.
When I have secured the rags and wrapped him in the blanket, I return to my kettle. The child does not move. He watches me place the kettle on the fire, and watches me kneel beside it. He looks out at the fog. “Where are we?” he asks. His voice is weak, and seems to be swallowed in the murk.
“We are in Balok Forest,” I tell him.
           “Is it in Hell?”
I arch an eyebrow toward the child. His eyes are wide, and he is shivering beneath the blanket. “Do you believe in a Hell?” I ask. He no longer looks at the fog, but at the ground. I should not have asked that. “You need not worry,” I say, gazing into the fire. “Children do not go to Hell.”
There is a long silence between us that lasts as long as it takes for the water to boil. In that time, the sun rises higher and dispels the fog, and the child appears to become less fearful. Selecting two particular leaves from my supply, I add them to a cup of water and wait for them to steep. When the water has turned a thin brown color, I bring it to the child. Though he is hesitant, he obeys when I tell him to drink. The tea acts quickly, and he blinks drowsily. I return to the fire, and his gaze follows. He is looking at the sigil of my Order I wear upon my breast: an eagle, having a ring of light about its head, perched upon the hilt of a sword pointed downward. It is scarred over with three intersecting lines, like the print of a crow’s foot. The child’s tongue is thick with sleep when he asks, “Can knights go to Hell?”
I do not answer. I do not know the answer.
I have known no shame greater than to have a commoner beg me for mercy. As a knight of the Order of the Divine, I believed myself to be a protector of the people. I brought justice to thieves and murderers, and I defended our lands from the barbarians of the south. I acted with honor. I followed our creed as I was taught. It was this belief, I suspect, that drew the attention of the clergy to myself. Time and again, they sought to remind me that my belief was not the truth, that I did not serve the people. I served them.
The man on his knees before me was perhaps forty years of age, a long and evidently healthy life behind him. His clothes were simple but well kept, his face worn, and his thin black hair silvering at the temples. His eyes were the color of worked leather. “Please!” His voice came out like air squeezed from a bellows.
“This man has failed to pay his tithe for three months now.” Caecilius stood to my left, his hands folded before him. He had a hawkish brow and a deep crimson robe, yet it was the predatory look with which he regarded the kneeling man that denoted him as a bishop. “He is to be punished in a manner befitting a thief.”
Another member of my Order, a brutish knight named Gideon, took the man’s left hand and forced him to hold the arm out before me. “I’ve paid, I’ve paid!” the man insisted. “I’ve given all my family can spare!”
“But,” Caecilius said, his voice bleeding false sympathy, “God does not ask for what you can spare. Are you so selfish that one of ten is too much to give? Are you so selfish that you would steal from God Himself?”
The man’s eyes were wide. “No! I didn’t…” He turned his head to me. “Please, mesere!”
I rested a hand upon the hilt of my sword and looked down at the man. “Are you a farmer?” He nodded desperately. I turn to Caecilius. “How is this man to pay his tithe if he is unable to tend his fields?”
“Do you doubt our Lord’s commandments?” Caecilius said. It was not a question, but an accusation.
I bowed my head. “No, Holiness. I simply wished—”
“There is no place for your wishes in our order,” Caecilius said. Spittle flew from his mouth, his teeth bared. “There is only the Lord’s commandments.”
I nodded. “Yes, Holiness.” My blade caught the reflection of the sun for but a moment when I drew it and rested the edge against the man’s wrist. I did not know his name, nor would I ever. Knights did not ask peasants for their names. To us, they were man, woman, child. It made the guilt easier to bear.
Caecilius smiled as I lifted the blade above my head and brought it down.
“O Lord Almighty, to whom all glory be, I give You thanks upon this day for the bounties You have bestowed upon me. You, who is all-powerful. You, who is all-knowing. Guide me upon Your path, O Lord. Grant me Your strength and shelter, O Lord, in this that I might honor You and do Your will. Show me Your mercy, O Lord, for even in my sin, I seek only to serve Your will…”
The words fall short. They will always fall short. I lift my face from the dirt. The cold within me remains, though is now joined by something violent and tumultuous that rises up before I can silence it. “How many times must I ask?” I do not know to whom I speak. “How many times must I prostrate myself and beg forgiveness before I can be certain that it will never come?” I bite my tongue, too late. Closing my eyes, I breathe deeply and press back against the fount of frustration within me. I do not move. I do not speak. I try to listen. There is only the crack of the fire, the song of the birds, the stirring of leaves in the wind.
The child sneezes and I open my eyes, my face hot. His gaze is fixed upon the ground. From beside the fire, I lift a bowl of soup I have prepared and take it to the child. It is a thin broth, with only the few vegetables and barley I had in my pack to fill it. It offers little in the way of sustenance, but it is better than nothing. As with the tea, I must order the child to eat before he accepts the bowl from me. When I have seen him sip the broth, I return to sit by the fire.
I watch him for several minutes, slowly draining the contents of the bowl. “Tell me,” I say. My heart feels cold in my chest. “What is your name?” The child is motionless, the bowl to his mouth, his eyes on me. Slowly, he shakes his head. I purse my lips, and the cold grows. I do not know why this knowledge is so important. “What if I tell you mine?” He hunches his shoulders and lowers the bowl. “I am Ariel of Righthold.” The child is silent, and he is shaking. I open my mouth to tell him he does not have to say, but I cannot form the words. I bow my head.
“I am Eli, mesere,” he whispers. Just as quietly, he adds, “Of Ione.”
“You need not call me mesere,” I say, and he nods meekly. “Why is it you are in this forest?”
The child—Eli—falls silent again. He is now leaning into the stone outcrop as if he wishes to become a part of it, but I see the fearful glances he casts toward me, toward my sigil. I place my hand on my chest to cover it. “You need not fear me,” I say. “I shall not harm you.”
Eli’s gaze drifts from my hand to the bowl he still holds, then to the fire. “The people of my village are afraid of me.”
“And why might they be afraid of a younghede such as yourself?”
There is a silence, as though the entire forest is awaiting his answer. He does not move, and even in the light of day, I see the fire reflecting within his eyes. He shakes as he breathes. “They believe I have magic.”
It was shortly before the first snowfall of my thirty-fourth year that I was brought to trial before my order. To this day, I do not know if there was a single indictment against me or if it had simply been the buildup of all my hesitancies. In either course, they were afraid of losing their power, and I was to be their scapegoat. I had not been blind to the corruption among the clergy, nor was I unaware of my complicity in their sins. I had stood by as they amassed power. I had given them my blade as they stole everything from the commoners. The blood of our people was on my hands, and I soothed my conscience by telling myself that I was doing the Lord’s work. Yet, when they brought me forth, they accused me of undermining our faith and of openly questioning the Holy Word. Heresy.
I told them that it was not true. I told them that I had given my life to the Order, and that I had never wavered from our creed. I told them that if I had questioned any word, it was that of man, not God. Perhaps I told them this, or perhaps I remained silent and allowed them to condemn me. Perhaps I did not protest when they marked my armor and cast me out. Perhaps I did not weep when my family denounced my name. Those moments are lost to me as drops of blood within a rain-swollen river. What I do recall are the cruel smiles upon the bishops’ faces when they sentenced me to die in the wilderness. They did this under the pretense of allowing God to end my life. They did this so that they might keep their hands clean.
I nearly did die that winter, trapped between the cold within and the cold without. When the snows melted and the rains came, I stood for days in the downpour. I was lost and without purpose, uncertain even of how to find my way once more. The Order had been my life. Surely, not everything had been lies, falsified by mere men. These thoughts pressed me onward, and even in the days I considered surrendering myself, it was to be to the Lord’s will. I have prayed, and I will continue to pray as I was taught, but I was never taught to listen.
I am standing, and my hands are on my sword. I do not remember doing either. My heart beats ever quicker, spreading the coldness throughout my body. Magic! You must not suffer a wicche to live. To study magic is tantamount to heresy. The cold is nearing my fingers. “Why?” I ask. “What did you do to make them believe you had magic?” The child does not look away from the fire. He is calm, far calmer than one his age should be. It is natural to believe he is a wicche, I tell myself. My hand tenses on the hilt of my blade. “Speak.”
“I have nightmares.” His voice trembles. He sniffs and wipes at his eyes. The cold creeps back up my arm. He is still a child. The fire snaps beneath his gaze. “Sometimes,” he says quietly, “my nightmares come true, and people get hurt.” Closing his eyes, he curls up like a woodlouse. His next words are a whimper. “I don’t know how to stop it.”
I look down at the child, and I cannot breathe. He himself believes he has magic. That should be enough. Were a bishop here, it would be more than enough. I would be ordered to execute the child, and I would have no choice but to obey. There is no bishop here, however, and the choice is mine alone.
Why? Why has the fate of this child been placed in my hands? My gaze drifts upward to the forest canopy. Through the leaves and branches I can just make out the light of the sun filtering through. What is the purpose? It has been a truth since I was a child that the study of magic is among the greatest sins one can commit. Now, I do not know for certain if there is even a God to sin against. For all my prayers and pleas, never have I received an answer.
          Until now.
I look back to the child, trembling before the fire. Had I known of his supposed magic when I found him, would I have nursed him back to health? Would I have left him to die? Could I have? Had I not asked why he was in the forest, would I have taken him back to his home? I would, inevitably, have learned of his magic. This child was sent to test me, and yet I still do not know which is the correct path. I close my eyes and draw a breath. The cold within me has reached a tipping point, and I know that if I choose incorrectly, I will be consumed. I open my eyes. “Rise.”
The child looks up at me. He is still afraid, and I cannot say that he has no right to be. After but a moment, he complies. His legs are unsteady from sickness, and he holds the blanket tight to his body like a shield. My sword does not make a sound as I draw it from my sheath. The child’s eyes widen and he stumbles back, but I do not move from my position. Holding the blade aloft before me, I capture a beam of sunlight within my eye. It is the cure I have waited so long for. My chest expands, and the cold is burned away.

Modern Day Slavery: Human Sex Trafficking Among Native American Women
Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry, and though it affects nearly every community across our nation, it is commonplace here in the US and in Indian Country.  According to Lisa Brunner, Executive Director and CEO Sacred Spirits First Nations Coalition, who testified in front of Congress, “Native women experience violent victimization at a higher rate than any other US population.  More than 1 in 3 Native American and Alaska Native women will be raped in their lifetime; more than 6 in 10 will be physically assaulted. Native women are murdered at more than ten times the national average” (Brunner 2016).  According to a new report published in May 2016 from the National Institute of Justice, “Among American Indian and Alaska Native women, 56.1 percent have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime and 14.4 percent have experienced it in the past year. Among American Indian and Alaska Native victims, 96 percent of women and 89 percent of men have experienced sexual violence by an interracial perpetrator” (Research Report p 11).
Prior to colonial contact, violence against Native women was very rare.  In fact, women were acknowledged to be sacred and revered members of their communities. However, the long-term impacts of government actions which caused widespread poverty, low educational attainment, high rates of community and interpersonal violence, high rates of alcohol-related deaths and suicide, poor physical health, and corroded family and community relations.  The U.S. government outlawed gatherings for ceremonies and it wasn’t until 1978 that American Indians were allowed to fully practice their traditional religions. All of which the U.S. government has never acknowledged, never apologized for, or attempted to compensate for its treatment of American Indians.
From the mid-1500s when the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto wrote in his journal how he and his men had captured Appalachee women in Florida “for their foul use and lewdness” (Galley 2002).  The fact that Native women would have sex with colonist that were connected to trade made them out to be tainted and mercenary (Fischer 2002). Because of these beliefs, Native women were raped and harassed by English surveying teams and the framework was set to justify the sexual exploitation of American Indian women who colonist believed to be sexually loose, mercenary and immoral having no regard for the norms of decent society. The U.S. Army, as immigrants moved westward, not only killed American Indian men in battle, but also slaughtered entire encampments of women, elders and children.  Referred to as “breeders”, American Indian women were raped, murdered, and sexually mutilated.
The atrocities continued throughout the generations.  In the 1850s, the U.S. government established and relocated American Indians to reservations for assimilation.  In 1879, the Bureau of Indian Affairs opened Carlisle Industrial School in Pennsylvania, which became the model for government-funded, Christian-oriented Indian boarding schools.  In its 39 years of operation, approximately 12,000 American Indian children attended (Anderson 2000).  According to the Dawes Allotment Acct in 1887, each reservations was broken up into 160 acre parcels which was allotted to individual heads of family, and it allowed the government to sell any unallotted land which resulted in 17 million acres of Indian land sold to companies or white men.  From 1950 to the 1970s, the U.S. government performed involuntary sterilization of Native women, approved of tribal termination and urban relocation efforts, and enforced large scale efforts into adopting Native children into white families.
What does all this have to do with today’s sex trafficking of Native American women?  Plenty.  History set the stage to what can be “described as “a perfect storm” of victimization, oppression, and poverty that makes Native American women vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation” (Shattered Hearts Report 2009).  According to the Trafficking Victim Protection Act (2002), “Trafficking involves sexual exploitation of persons, predominately women and girls, involving activities related to prostitution, pornography, sex tourism, and other commercial sexual services.  Victims are often forced through physical violence to engage in sex acts or perform slavery-like labor.  Such force includes rape and other forms of sexual abuse, torture, starvation, imprisonment, threats, psychological abuse, and coercion” (22). Most of these victims were sexually abused           as kids.  Some young women are coerced into believing they are providing for their families.  All are poverty stricken and feel this is their only “career” choice.
Almost all the stories sound alike.  In the city of Duluth, a port city in Minnesota, many Native women, mothers and daughters alike, are driven into prostitution by poverty and homelessness.  Generations of Native women have sold themselves in order to survive.  There has been a large increase in the number of prostitutes since 2000, especially those who are underage.  Criminals know they are less likely to be arrested or prosecuted for trafficking and the overhead is far less than that required for selling drugs.  The internet has increased the demand for prostitutes with escort services, both online and by phone, which provides a somewhat legal means for prostitutes and buyers to connect.  The internet also aids the movement and coordination of prostitution.  Pimps coordinate meet-ups between the women and buyers at rural bars and strip clubs.  The police noted it seems to be growing in organization and sophistication (Pember 2012).
Between the significant lack of federal or state funding for helping domestically trafficked or prostituted women, and the distrust of law enforcement among Native girls and women many traffickers suffer no real consequences even if they agree to testify.  Lieutenant Scott Drewlo of the Duluth police notes, “As an example, “the big boat case” of 2000, in which a 14-year-old Native girl was sold to the crew of a ship by a gang in Duluth. According to Drewlo, organized crime in the form of gangs has played a large role in trafficking girls in and around Duluth for years. The girl was locked in a cabin on the boat for days while the crew raped her repeatedly. She managed to escape when the ship was in port in Cleveland and made her way back to Duluth, where she contacted police. In the end, however, she was too frightened to testify and disappeared. We have no way of knowing how many times this sort of thing has happened,” he says (Pember 2012).
Vednita Carter, founder of Breaking Free, a Minneapolis-based non-profit dedicated to helping women escape prostitution says “true choice is the ability to change your mind and leave a situation, however, you can’t just walk away from prostitution.  Once you’ve been involved so many things have happened that prevent you from leaving. I like to call it New Age Slavery.  At some point, their spirits fall down and they see that they are indeed victims” (2)  She claims initially some glamorize the life and speak fondly of the attention from men, wearing fancy clothes, going out to eat, staying in nice hotels.  “I tell them that’s not prostitution.  I ask them how they felt when a stranger ordered them to their knees and demanded they open their mouths. Sometimes they being to cry,” Carter said.  It is then they come to realize they’ve been hurt, things have happened to them that they never expected to happen.  A man can do anything he wants to a prostitute; “the women who come to us are broken” said Carter.
Now that sex trafficking is beginning to get the attention of federal, state, and tribal health and social service agencies, they are struggling to create meaningful ways to serve sex trafficking victims. The stringent barriers created though are causing problems.  Some services are requiring adult victims to cooperate with law enforcement to receive services.  Because some victims won’t cooperate, they are turned away.  Minors, on the other hand, are not required to work with law enforcement, but are encouraged to do so.  The first and only shelter designated to serve Native American sex trafficking victims has recently been funded by the Department of Justice.  Located on the Crow Creek Reservation, Pathfinders, as it’s called, is due to open later this year and will offer long-term housing for survivors as well as mental health, job training, and spiritual support services.
The question arises, would sex trafficking decrease if prostitution was made legal? The Nordic Model, also known as the Sex Buyer Law, decriminalizes all those who are prostituted, provides support services to help them exit, and makes buying people for sex a criminal offense, in order to reduce the demand that drives sex trafficking.  It was pioneered in Sweden after extensive research and has been adopted by countries such as Canada, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand. The UK is currently looking into implementing the Nordic Model.  Has it worked? According to the countries that have criminalized sex buyers, such as Sweden, have seen a significant drop in sex trafficking per capita than Denmark and Germany where buying sex is legal.  Street prostitution has halved and the Swedish government determined that this is not because prostitution has moved inside.
Native American women experience violence, rape, physical assault, and murder in the United States at a higher rate than any other population.  This outrage alone should make people stand up and take notice. Prior to colonization, violence against Native American women was rare, however the long-term impacts of government actions caused widespread poverty, high rates of alcoholism and drug use, and low educational attainment throughout the generations of the Indian nations.  History set the stage for the perfect storm and Native American women became vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation.  Because of poverty and homelessness, mothers and daughters alike have turned to prostitution in order to survive.  Thanks to the dedication of many organizations like “Breaking Free” and funding from the Justice Department, giving these women a choice to end their life of prostitution with shelter, education, job training, and spiritual support, there may be hope for some of these women.  Gaining trust in law enforcement and providing safe access to those who decide to go after their perpetrators remains a huge problem in helping victims.  Some think adopting the Nordic Model will decrease sex trafficking everywhere. Awareness is key to the start of the solution.  We must, as a nation, end poverty; we must, as a nation, end homelessness; we must, as a nation, embrace our brothers and sisters with compassion and understanding. For without our help, this crime on women will never go away.
