if anyone wants a really really good long fic to read, about regulus surviving the inferi but becoming a squib in the process - then eventually rescuing Harry from the dursleys and being his dad throughout Hogwarts, then please read More than Magic!!! its one of my favorite fics ever, it's really well thought out and the characterization of reg is the best I've seen in a (somewhat) canon compliant story like this. its really deep and it's funny and sweet too and djdjdnskkd read it!!

Based on what I know, I do not think Sirius and Regulus were even taught being gay was possible. I think Walburga/Orion refused to teach them it even exists. So I imagine them finding out like this:

Sirius: Yeah, if I was a girl I would probably date Remus to be honest. Such a shame it’s impossible for me to like him.

James: Impossible? What do you mean??

Regulus turned to James as he arrived down the stairs after having said goodnight to Harry.

”We are so lucky to have Harry, aren’t we?”

“Yes, of course”, James smiled a little surprised and sat down beside Regulus on the sofa.

Regulus continued in a slightly higher than necessary voice: “Did you notice how much effort he put into that drawing for Sirius?”

“Yes. I’m so proud of him, but-“ James frowned.

“Me too, he’s a lovely child.”

James leaned closer to Regulus and whispered. “What are you doing? He can probably hear us, you know?”

Regulus whispered back: “That’s the whole point.”

James shook his head with the smile that was reserved for him still not understanding some of his husband's quirks. “Isn’t it better to not just say it to him?”

Regulus scoffed “Like he would believe that?” When James still looked confused, he annoyedly spread his hands and exclaimed: “It’s when the children have gone to bed that the parents say what they really think. Everyone knows that, James!”

James looked sceptically at him and opened his mouth to say something, but Regulus suddenly had to look away and bit his lip which threatened to start trembling. He forced himself to remember he didn’t have to hide from James, he was safe here. He couldn’t bring himself to look back up, but he managed to keep talking, albeit in a thin voice. “I used to hear my parents talk about me all the time.”

Regulus held his breath, trying his best not to think about how laying sleepless in his bed after one of those nights felt, until James’ arms wrapped around him.

“Oh, no. Oh, baby.” James whispered, sounding suspiciously much like he was also fighting back tears.

Regulus sneaks off to the Potters to give Sirius a secret Christmas gift and gets caught by Sirius and James who convince him to stay a bit longer, and every time Regulus is like, "I have to go" and Sirius is like, "It's Christmas Reg, cmon just a little longer, you can say that I dragged you here against your will or whatever, just stay a little for a bit longer." And Regulus, being loki helpless against his older brother, just agrees. And he begins to bond with everyone.

Eventually, Regulus accidentally stays the rest of the day and when he gets ready to finally leave, Effie is like, "Would you like to stay the night? It's quite late" and Monty just straight up says, "Would you like to stay forever?"

And that's how Regulus ran away. (Accidentally)
