(this is going off of the s6b route in my head that goes from “save yourself” to “world game” (which I think is a pretty common path) but!!)

Do you ever think about how the first s6b companion DIES & how that sets the tone for the whole ‘season’……..like how Jamie is chosen maybe practically because he is allegedly “good at handling the rough stuff” or also somewhat selfishly because the Doctor knows it’s going to be so much more dangerous now……

and how that would explain why Zoe never crops up in s6b eu much until bigfinish steps in??? Like not just that she is so much safer than Jamie atp (on the wheel vs you know. a plantation or other consequences) but also bc s6b will lead to so much more danger and the Doctor knows this.

They actively know what they are roping Jamie into, and how that could go to show this sort of. “I love you enough to be WILLING to put you in danger” and this insane trust between them & the guilt the Doctor probably feels over all of it - but also the way they’re literally saving each other? Because Jamie was going to be unsafe either way, and in this the Doctor can, you know, be with him while experiencing different dangers. Working for the Time Lords of course won’t just be the odd visit here or there to save a planet but truly disgusting work that they care enough about to interfere with but are just ashamed enough to use the Doctor for it.

And all of this strikes you in the face and leaves you stinging because Serena died. Just like the Daleks’ Master Plan - which, like, outside of the show of course was the chaos of Doctor Who itself changing - starts off a very dark streak of companion deaths and chilling narratives through eu & tv canon until Steven’s eventual departure.

I wasn’t awfully attached to Serena, but it really shows Two how far the Time Lords will go & how little they care. The mysterious Players are never expanded upon but they don’t really need to be. This is a mission - approached as the Doctor’s first, I’m assuming was Terrance Dicks’ intention - where the Doctor’s assigned companion is another Time Lord. And yet she dies.

But it’s not just kicking off this era with a death that hits, it’s everything she represented - the narrow minded typical Time Lord who meets the Doctor & is so changed and enchanted by them that they begin to understand and unlearn their own programming. The hope that the Doctor might feel when they begin working for Gallifrey - maybe it will be alright after all, maybe they can make a difference, maybe being home doesn’t have to be so different from, say, their past family of Jamie & Zoe, because they too unlearned their own programming by traveling in the TARDIS. And then Serena dies. And while it isn’t entirely gloomy or haunting -

The way this ends is so….of course it’s intended to lead into the Two Doctors but it really says something to draw a reference to the dead companion who represented so much of the shape of s6b right next to Jamie….not to mention how quickly the Doctor uses her death to bargain for Jamie….god I really can’t say anything coherent about this. I just think Serena should get more of a highlight not just as a Time Lord “swayed” by the Doctor’s,,,eccentricities but as someone who affected them so much and their ensuing, new-ish relationship with Jamie. Again I think this can also sort of explain the general lack of Zoe in s6b even though it feels like wasted potential (I’m working on a Zoe s6b fic and,,it’s rough. I love her post-TWG eu so it’s a Time…) - not just because the Doctor is only allowed one companion, but because of this darker tone, for the plot and season as a whole as well as the Doctor and the foundations their reunion with Jamie is built on.

I’m not saying this is like my main headcanon for s6b of course, but it’s an interesting thing to entertain imo

I’ve always found it super interesting that when Callum is encased in stone in the opening he doesn’t shed a tear, unlike Viren in the opening or Avizandum in the show.

Avizandum and Viren both have significant regrets. Avizandum fears for his mate and his egg as well as the fate of Xadia. While we know he reveled in squashing the ants (humans) I can’t help but think he genuinely was concerned for Xadia and the impact humans invading could have on the land. Ultimately of course, he reaches for Zym, the newly laid egg, and Zubeia…his family, before he is turned to stone.

Viren on the other hand is without a kingdom (a king) and frankly without a true lease on life. He has 30 days to live and must free Aaravos, the reviled Startouch elf, to extend his life.

So why does Viren cry a single tear before he is encased in stone, while Callum does not?

Because one will have great regret when they fully realize they have fallen into Aaravos’s hands, and one will not.

We see clearly from s5 that Viren is repentant and regretful about his actions and the path he has set Claudia on. My guess from the teaser is that he will try to appeal to Ezran to save his daughter from Aaravos, but unbeknownst to him, Callum and Rayla have set off with Aaravos’s prison. By this point it is out of Ezran’s hands on what to do.

Meanwhile we have Callum who is bursting with self-doubt, and untold resentment and love for Rayla. But as we see in the teaser (*cough* screencap where Callum touches Rayla’s chin *cough*) there clearly will be a reckoning between Callum and Rayla regarding their relationship. This leads me to believe that not only will Callum reconcile with Rayla but that he’ll also reconcile the situation with Rayla’s parenteral figures by freeing them from the coins. (Personally I’m a huge fam of Callum using dark magic to do so but its still very possible he’ll utilize the quasar diamonds/corona to do so.) All this to say, once Callum succumbs to Aaravos’s control, he will have no regrets. For whatever reason, he will think those close to him, whether Ezran, Rayla or Amaya, are in good hands and that regardless of his absence will be fine without him.

So I was listening to a friend's Doug Eiffel playlist, and one of the songs was one I hadn't heard in a long time, and it had such a strong effect on me. It reminded me so strongly of the period of time in my life where I listened to that song often. I was thinking about this in terms of Eiffel because he is such a Guy Who Listens to Music (even if it is the most normal-guy music ever).

And I thought about that as a mechanism for his memories returning. Like certain classical music songs send him into fight or flight and give him vauge flashbacks which lead to more memories, and some classic rock songs remind him of some good and not so good times in his life on earth.

I agree with you that him regaining his memories is consistent with the show's themes, and I feel like this would be a really thematically relevant way for it to happen.

I wanted to offer you this bc ur the resident Eiffel expert on this platform and I think you understand him. What are your takes?

yes!! i really love that. i definitely agree with you - music is a powerful catalyst for memory, and it's so significant to both the themes of wolf 359 and to eiffel as a person; it makes perfect sense to me that all of that would be connected.

i think that combines well with, like... lovelace's blood was still working on eiffel (freeing him from mind control) just days before the finale; i like the idea that that's what makes him regaining his memory possible, but that music is what... activates it? facilitates it?

i like it as a framing device because - like you said - both key moments in eiffel's life + major events in wolf 359 would be tied to music, and i think it works thematically, with 'music as the essence of humanity' being scaled down to this more personal, like... music as the essence of doug eiffel, this one particular person.

(i keep saying that there's an Eiffel Version of change of mind in my head for the concept of him regaining his memories, and i don't know if that makes sense to anyone else, but... the way that paradise valley is sort of... the anthem of lovelace's resurrection, in what she associates it with and what it represents for her... well, i think eiffel's version of that is bordering on a jukebox musical.)

as well as acting as a catalyst, i like the idea that eiffel remembers music in the same way he retains muscle memory, etc. - he doesn't remember lyrics or titles or bands, but he'll still find himself humming along. i like what that could say about music, with the themes of the show, and i think it kinda works as a metaphor for how i think about eiffel without his memories. he doesn't remember the words, but he still knows the tune.

like,, on the plus, he has no idea she was the one who sent him to his 'death' in sa2 (this might intensify her guilt even more, actually), but also he has no idea who he is or who she is. he just wandered, found her and helped her for seemingly no reason. there was nothing, no motive to back his deeds. the whole time he was acting off, and she then finds out why

she remains strong and gives him her opinion that he is now how she always saw him (it comes from within. both in her sentiment, and in shadow's actions), but her heart breaks as they separate, wishing she could help, wishing that she didn't have to leave him, but knowing well that it's his path to take

even if he has no recollection of her impact before, she becomes his reason for treason. a second time
