Oh fuck, the Jopson Sadness got me again. Ow. Cos there's another bit of poetry in his death isn't there. It's really easy to think of him only in relation to his closeness with Crozier, but that's not the whole truth is it. It's not what we're shown is the important true thing.

The turning point of the ENTIRE story—when Crozier ends his recovery too early, takes back control from Fitzjames and dooms them all to die from doing it his way because "nothing else will do"—happens because Jopson is alone with him. Everyone's left, gone to carnivale, there's no "the doctor is the captain in this matter" now. No backup, no supportive looks, no break for soup or to compose himself or anything at all. Just him Vs Crozier.

And Crozier wins, of course. He gets his way. Doesn't want to be stuck in there any more, wants to see the sunrise, wants to be done with it. So he overrules Jopson, plays on his hope, his desperation to see Crozier happy, because happy means safe. Even though taking an only 3 weeks non-drinking alcoholic to a blowout booze up party where he has total authority (and anyone who knows about the problem can't say shit because they're in public) is obviously not a good idea. But he's got no defence against hope, does he. And by then Crozier knows it.

And we return to this breaking point in his last moments. He doesn't die when Crozier leaves with the mutineers, losing him actually isn't the end, his relationship with Crozier wasn't really the important true thing. He dies when everyone else leaves. When Crozier is all he sees. When he's left alone with him again.
