This was mostly just an exercise to give both of them adult designs. uh. i'm only calling it an au because I made bs some explanations behind their designs while i was drawing them. so uh, in this universe, sburb never happens + things that happened because of sburb don't happen either, but the alternian society is relatively unchanged. i dont actually know.. what.. karkat does.. like i cant figure out why he wouldnt be culled but it doesnt really matter i just wanted to draw him looking cool! (i am. open to hear about speculation if you have any). also i figured that Kanaya would go to the brooding caverns after her lusus dies, bc the wiki said her lusus would die regardless of the game taking place n whatever, and probaly do something with the matriorb there idk. thats all tho! ill prolly draw them more and maybe develop more lore as i do ^^;

also! fun fact. i was having trouble designing kk's outfit so i looked in an old antiques catalog book from the internet archive to get inspiration from objects that had the same colors as those that i wanted to use in his design? not sure why i did that. just had a hunch that it would be fun. so this is the object i found that strangely enough inspired kk's fit

haha.. and i also found one for nepeta, though it was easier to design her fit and i didnt actually need a reference object

i guess i just feel that even as leftist scifi authors recognize our sociopolitical superstructure as a strategic target for destabilization via the elaboration of fictional alternatives, the family continues to go under the radar and these same authors fail to recognize it as a system that is similarly is in urgent need of subversion. authors will do crazy things wrt space government and economics and be like. but of course everyone in this strange society has two heterosexual parents :) DO YOU HEAR YOURSELF. ursula le guin voice we live in familialism / its power seems inescapable / it will continue to seem inescapable until we invest our collective mental energy into imagining what other options could look and feel like!!!

k's last post reminds me of an i guess parallel thought i was having recently, which is that the family seems to be the technology that gives structure and meaning to novels such that even in a lot of the scifi i read, authors that are trying to do something different wrt social structures are still like. well of course my main character loves and/or hates his parents, because it's easy shorthand to communicate the contours of someone's personality. maybe its because i was watching andor in the fall? but its just WEIRD to be in a world so far into the future that tons of things are different and have it still be like. well of course the protagonist and antagonist both have mommy issues :) and that's not to say that i dont understand the function lots of scifi serves wrt commenting on our society as it currently stands and defamiliarizing it for viewers/readers such that it is easier to see clearly. I GET THAT and i think andor does that pretty well. however. i also would like more often to read about people who are not either embedded in oedipal plots or cut off from family dynamics but in such a way that they reproduce family structure in its negative image, e.g. the character who grew up in the group home spending the whole plot searching for their parents. im looking at you book of the new sun. i want to imagine what a person would be like who has no family and no concept of one, who does not feel lesser for that absence, who was brought up via structures of reproductive labor i cannot even imagine. please

au where the clown pageant that Fizz quits during is about a month after the end of Season 1, and Charlie and Vaggie were in the audience. They saw Fizz quitting, and Charlie definitely took notice of Ozzie protecting Fizz.

(“Why the fuck are you two dressed like clowns?” Angel asks when they got back.

“Everyone else had merch, so I picked the nicest shirt,” responded Vaggie in her Glitz and Glam t-shirt.

“He was so nice to this one kid, and then he had that song!” Charlie responded while wearing a Fizzarolli hat.

“Wait,” Angel said in disbelief. “You two went to a circus for your date?”

“It was Charlie’s turn to pick the place,” was Vaggie’s only defense.

“It was actually a clown pageant!” Charlie clarified. “Vaggie’s missed so much of hell because I thought she was stuck here in Pride. It’s been three years, and she hasn’t even been to the harvest moon festival in Wrath!”)

And. Well. Charlie sees it, and she immediately thinks of Angel Dust. And if Ozzie could get Fizz out of his deal, maybe he could get Angel out of his. She was… pretty sure Lucifer was on good terms with the other deadly sins? Maybe? And she remembers how badly interfering with Angel’s work life without him wanting her too went last time, but she doesn’t want to get Angel’s hopes up for nothing, so she jumps to calling Ozzie anyway.

(“Let me get this straight,” the king of lust said. “You want me to get involved in overlord politics? No. No way. I stay out of pride for a reason.”

“I can pay?” She really couldn’t, honestly.

“Look, I know I’m the sin of lust, but I have a boyfriend.” And wow, Ozzie looked really happy to be saying that last part.

Ozzie sighed. “Look. I don’t know shit about sinner contracts, ok? If he sold his soul, nobody can just overpower their way out of that. If anyone could, it would’ve been Lucifer, and you’d have gone to him if he could, wouldn’t you?”

Charlie nodded, trying fruitlessly not to let her disappointment show.

“That being said, if you can get a copy of the contract, I… know a guy who may be able to find a loophole.”)

And then, somehow, Stolas ends up agreeing to go to the hotel and reads over the contract. You guys remember when Fizz got captured and he thoroughly read all that legal stuff? It’s that scene again, but at the hotel.

He also brings Blitzø for security. Blitzø meets Cherri Bomb at the bar while she’s waiting for Angel to be done with all the contract stuff. This is the start of a ride-or-die and terrifying friendship.

Anyway, I’m not sure if Stolas would find a loophole or not yet, but I do kind of think he would bc this is Val we’re talking about.

on god i need to do more plant speculative biology because I always feel like even talented creators fudge the details. Especially when it comes to motile plants and "animals" made of plant-like matter. Like dunmesh put a lot of care into explaining how living armor moves via contractile links in a colony of animals but the dryads were just kinda... hollow like a balloon? What motile mechanism were they using that took up so little space but was powerful enough for them to attack with the same force as a humanoid? and very little of their appearance seemed to be influenced by the growth patterns plants exhibit, they were pretty much perfectly humanoid but with leaf crowns. Not singling out DM here, it's just a case study of something having very good bio but its plant stuff is a mixed bag. DM's mandrakes on the other hand are great, I loved their rooty appearance and the detail of them only being consistently man-shaped because of selective breeding by humanoids
