no idea why my inbox didn't give me this notif until now, but now's a better time than any to talk more about this.

i'm chinese. i speak fluent mandarin chinese. i've consulted other native chinese speakers about this, both genshin players and unrelated. i play genshin with chinese audio and english subs specifically to catch and complain about inaccuracies. i'd reveal more information but then i think it'd be trivially easy to doxx me if one knew what they were looking for.

fundamentally, the issue of incest lies in physical reproduction, yet i find adoptive incestuous relationships discomforting all the same. it's why i didn't like or finish go ahead (以家人之名) because i felt that it laid too much into the siblings aspect for romantic relationships to be feasible, and it was super contradictory from the initial general message of the first bittersweet yet wholesome episode.

however, personally, i just don't think kaeya felt like a part of the family until crepus's death and he really reflected on crepus's actions towards him (hangout). and even after beginning to view crepus as a father figure, he wouldn't have so shallowly made the transition for diluc to be his brother by adoption and consequently changed his entire mind about the guy (which you can see with the way he chooses to refer to both men with different terms, one adoptive and familial, one very clearly 'sworn', very consistently throughout the whole game. if that ever changes in chinese, well, at least you can know that i'll make a post about it if i still care about genshin by then.)

the localization team does make plenty of serious mistakes, and it's of my opinion that as a result, it has very clearly skewed character relationships with those mistakes, (cynari and collei, eulamber, some npcs in liyue, sumeru) some from cultural differences, some just from lazy translation overall. there's layers of complexity in how chinese utilizes honorifics and affectionate terms, as well as contextual consideration between fiction and reality, and sometimes i feel like the english localization team just threw it all into google translate and called it a day.

i don't even ship kaeluc that much. i like to call it the secret third thing where they can't get off their asses to talk about anything ever so they exist in an undefined space and to have them return to any semblance of a healthy relationship, platonic, familial, or romantic, would require a novel's length worth of development that hoyoverse will probably never write, and so my brain has made up novels of all three kinds and more.

however, i also don't care about people who do ship kaeluc or treat any other fictional media in an incestuous or otherwise problematic manner, regardless of language or culture. this is because i operate on a "don't like, don't read, don't interact" mindset. it makes being in fandom more fun; you should try it.

my disappointment wasn't aimed at the fact that i think too little people ship kaeluc. it just sucks to see people claim that that's what's wrong with the fandom and spin this evil gross imagery around the ship over a misunderstanding, especially when that's not how i view it. it's also the only thing vehemently regularly repeated ('klcers dni') when there's so many other issues with the game and the fandom.

(off topic but what's the worst thing that'll happen if a kaeluc shipper likes your fan stuff. it's not like they come into your tumblr asks to bother you with an "oh btw you're wrong about how you enjoy this media and this is what's right"-- oh wait that's what's going on here right)

including the fact that people like you purposefully go around searching in the kaeluc tag (which you probably did, because nobody is scrolling that far back in my blog to find this one specific post to complain about) to police and pick fights with people over a stupid issue from 2020/2021. i guess tumblr isn't a safe place to talk about kaeluc either lmao.

and to think i left anon asks on in the hopes that it could be an inbox for anyone who wanted to ask me art questions or just leave something positive and not feel too awkward (where do i get the confidence in thinking anyone would ask my incompetent brain for help lol).

note — reader's ability in this is based on one that my friend chose for our self-ship au. "Teacher of Truth by Saneatsu Mushanokoji: The user can employ tarot cards to gain insight into the past, current, and possible future situations. The user needs to know what each of the cards mean in order to properly interpret what they say." it's from a post on tumblr, but I couldn't find it for the life of me! i'll credit if i can. anyway, it's been tweaked a little so i'm here to explain. in this, reader can choose to use their ability during a reading or not, but the tarot cards are always personal to them. people they know will sometimes show in the cards if they're important to them.

The next time Dazai sees you, it’s well before the ADA opens for the day. He’d admittedly had a rough night—sleep evaded him like always, and he hadn’t had dinner because of his own laziness. His futon was impossibly comfy. How was he meant to part with its loving warmth?

The Door to the agency creaks open, the sound not unlike the groan of the cafe floorboards only steps away. One of Dazai’s favorite activities was purposely seeking out the creaky floorboards and dancing on them so loud Kunikida would have to berate him, of course. He was intimately familiar with the annoying sounds this old building could make.

The office is darker than during working hours, but he notices the meager amount of lights still switched on. Distantly, he knows Kunikida would’ve blown a gasket about the electric bill if he had found them still on. He takes a step into the room-

Something rustles. Downstairs, an old radio plays a song he does not recognize. Pigeons flutter and coo from outside the window.

Somebody was in the agency, and had it been any of his fellow detectives, he’d have known.

“Hmmm, what’s this,” he mutters absently, volume low enough to alert whoever it was had decided to trespass.

”Dazai-san?” a soft voice calls, and Dazai pauses for a moment. A short, hollow sound follows—cards shuffling. He bites the inside of his cheek. How curious.

”Last I checked, you don’t clock in with the rest of us measly agents. Surely Ango’s fuming by now?” He hums, stepping into view of you. you’re sat at Atsushi’s desk, bag perched on top of Atsushi’s empty report trays. Dazai almost smirks at the sight— silly Atsushi, always rushing to complete everything in a timely manner. One day, he’d get him to turn them in later, hopefully months later- like he did.

”Hm, no. I clocked in earlier, but Ango wanted me over here early. Something about a mission I have to hand over to Fukuzawa-dono. I got a key from him last time, so I just let myself in.” you explained. Dazai pulled his own chair out and collapsed into it, peering down at what your hands were busying themselves with.

He realizes they’re tarot cards. Thick and sturdy under your fingers, you set them up neatly in front of yourself. The backs are a matte purple, decorated with silver details that glint as the sunrise light hits them for just a fraction of a second. The illustrations seem to flicker with movement, almost like snapshots of time shifting through an old camera, frame after frame.

”What’s got you so busy?” he asks, exaggeratingly leaning over to look at the cards. You laugh and smile, expression wobbly. He notes the change. You briefly shake out the bracelet laying on your wrist, almost nervously. You lay the last card on the desk’s surface. Atsushi’s cute cat clock ticks from where it’s placed near his report trays.

“I do readings for the day early in the morning, just in case. Sometimes, I don’t even use my ability.” You explain, keeping your voice low so as not to break the morning peace. Dazai glances at the cat clock. Soon, the secretaries and Kunikida will clock in and begin their work day. He focuses back on you and grins, intrigued.

“Anxious, then? I guess the ability to see the future will do that to ‘ya.” Dazai sighed, crossing his legs and resting his chin on his hand. He was content to watch you finish setting the cards down in a formation he admittedly did not understand.

” What does that one mean?” he says, pointing to one of the cards. Its flickering surface shows a woman with mint-colored hair pulled up into a bun. Behind her, there’s a black mass, and she seems to be standing in a graveyard. There are two Xs at the top of the card. You redirect your attention to the card he’s hovering his finger over and smile.

”That’s Judgment—renewal, reflection, awakening, or reckoning. For a personal reading, it would mean going through a period of self-evaluation or maybe even trying to understand the people around you and your situation more.” You explain, seemingly done with the spread and setting down the other cards nearby. Dazai purses his lips.

”Sounds gloomy. Lame!” He huffs, upset by his choice. you gasp and narrow your eyes.

”Don’t call them lame! You’ll piss them off, Dazai.” You hiss, smacking him on the arm. Dazai grins and leans closer, smile growing coy.

”Really now? And how exactly does one do that?” Dazai prods. You stick your tongue out and cross your arms.

“Not telling. Now shut up and let me do my reading.” You grumble, eyes flicking over the cards. Dazai whines and throws himself forward, almost shoving you off of Atsushi’s chair.

”Dude!” You yelp, hands scrambling to grasp his coat as he rights himself. Dazai grabs you by the shoulders and shakes, intent on being the biggest possible nuisance.

”That’s boring! Do your reading laterrrr; it won’t matter, right? Ne- do a reading for me! I wanna know my future,” He begs, grinning. You blink and scowl, pushing him away.

”First off, it would matter. Doing a reading later would be a completely different outcome. Just wait. All I have to do is interpret these. I’ll do yours after.” You grumble, adjusting their sleeves and settling back into the chair. Dazai harrumphs but settles into his own chair to watch you silently read the cards.

You focus back on the cards, and Dazai settles himself by watching you idly. You’re dressed in what you always wear to work, but it’s casual enough to know doubt have been breaking the dress code had you not been working under Ango for so long.  There’s a small scrunch to your nose as you focus on your task, and Dazai can spot how you run your tongue over your teeth in thought. Dazai looks away pointedly. Taking a few breaths, he forcibly clears his mind. How odd.

”Okay, done.” You hum, straightening and starting to pick up the cards. He shifts so his whole body is faced toward you. You take gentle care of the cards, putting them back into the deck.

”Why do they flicker like that? You aren’t using your ability,” he asks, curious about the shifting images on the cards. You shrug.

”Don’t know. It happens no matter what deck I use, though I prefer using this one. The images just shift into the same ones most of the time, though some have changed over time.” You explain, shuffling the cards. Dazai reaches out and hovers over your hand before poking the back of it gently. You let him despite knowing the outcome.

The images on the cards still lying on the table flicker, completely uninterrupted, even as Dazai feels the shiver of his ability eating away at yours. He hums and pulls away. He hadn’t been paying attention when he jostled you earlier, but you were right- they were unaffected.

”Strange, but not unheard of. Some ability effects aren’t considered active enough for my ability to erase.” Dazai says, allowing you to continue. you finish and present him with the deck, pulling away when he goes to take them.

”Don’t be mean to them. They’ll be mean to you. You can’t even think anything negative; they’ll know. You’re gonna cut the deck in 3, okay? We’ll do a simple reading.” you explain, and only once Dazai agrees (crosses his heart and hopes to die!) is he gently handed the cards.

”What do you want to read? We can focus on love, or money, or your career, things like that.” You say. Dazai ponders for a moment before sniffing, mouth settled into a pompous pout.

”I want to know if someone will finally be interested in a double suicide with me.” He huffs. You scoff.

”You’re insane. Okay, so love. Think about that while you cut them.” You nod, giving him the go-ahead. He runs his fingers over the well-loved edges and slots his thumbs through the deck where it feels right, setting the individual cuts down on the desk before them. He tries to take it as seriously as possible, though thinking about love has always made him squirm and itch beneath his skin.

You reach over once he’s done and clear your throat, carefully picking the top cards on each deck and laying them out in front of him. On the left, the first card flipped is a wheel, seemingly in the sky and surrounded by clouds. The clouds float by calmly, though Dazai can’t find anything particularly personal to you the way some of the other cards would show.

It’s made a little more difficult considering the card’s orientation- upside down.

You hum at it before moving on. The card in the middle is revealed, and this one piques his interest. He grins a little at the image. Two figures hold goblets in their hands, strings of power rising from the cups and meeting above their heads to form a Yin and Yang sign. The figures are startingly familiar- one dark-haired, the other light-haired. Accents in their hair match each other, silver and black clashing and melding nicely. This one’s facing right-side up. The image flickers to show the energy that swirls around, occasionally circling their respective holders.

The last one flicks onto the wooden desk with a hollow sound. The image is soft, not unlike the first one with the blue sky. A sun takes up the upper half, rays pronounced against the sky. Ttheire’s a little kid in the illustration, their beaming face scrunched up in happiness. There’s a flag clutched in one hand, with the other gripping onto the mane of the white horse they’re perched upon. Sunflowers frame them, peaking over the illustrated garden wall behind them.

It’s an endlessly endearing picture, and from the smile, he has a feeling he knows who it is. Like the last one, it’s right-side up.

You settle your chin against your palm, leaning on the table with a hum.

”That’s….a really nice reading, actually.” You move to point at the cards. Dazai sits patiently with his hands on his lap. Nothing more fascinating than seeing someone in their element, he supposed.

”That first one is The Wheel of Fortune. Upside down, it’s a little darker. It represents your past,” you pause, looking at him for a moment. “I think for you, it’s focused on the feeling of helplessness—lack of power or control…like you had love but couldn’t control how and when you lost it,” you say, your voice soft. Dazai fights to ignore the discomfort building in his throat.

”Well, what can I say? My dark past haunts me,” he bemoans, and you huff a soft laugh. You move on to the next card- the cups. You look a little embarrassed by this one.

”This one is the present. Two cups represent…well, partnership. More specifically, the realization of a new partnership. This one can be pretty romantic. I guess you’ve got something to look forward to soon,” you say, pointedly ignoring the images of his two kohais. He grins, sparing you of the teasing. He didn’t know how well you even knew Akutagawa- but it was amusing to see everyone could see what those two denied vehemently.

”The last one is the future. You got The Sun, which is actually really sweet.” Through your embarrassment, Dazai watches a sweet smile grow on your face. He matches it easily.

“It means joy and success, for you in particular. It means…whatever or whoever your two cups is for, you’ll be very happy together.” You say, and Dazai sighs wistfully.

”Maybe someone will finally want to commit suicide with me! This news might keep me alive a day longer just yet,” Dazai coos. You groan and take a deep breath, seemingly ignoring him as you duck your head down and then start to put the cards back.

”You better hope you didn’t piss this deck off, Dazai.” you huff, glaring. Dazai pouts, cradling his face in his hands.

“What?! I followed all your rules; I would never,” he whines. You flip him off and busily tuck the cards into a soft leather pouch. He lets his hands drop and watches for a moment.

”Thanks for the reading,” Dazai says, his voice back to normal. You glance at him and smile.

”Yeah, no problem. It’s nice to read without my ability once in a while,” you admit, expression soft. He grins. Something stirs in his chest.

”You can read me whenever you want, lovely.” He purrs jokingly. You startle, flushing. You glare and kick him with your foot.

”Don’t say shit like that,” you mutter. Dazai whines out a laugh, having settled on teasing you until he could see the smoke coming out your ears.

Before he could continue, the door creaks open, and the overhead lights flick on. Multiple people come shuffling in, and Dazai can hear Kunikida conversing lowly with Fukuzawa. The secretaries also file in, chattering contently amongst themselves. Fukuzawa and Kunkida pause only to greet them both. you wave politely, and Dazai salutes them both.

you blink your eyes to adjust to the light now flooding the room. Dazai huffs and stands with a groan.

”Alright, I’ve got five minutes to get out of here. You’ll be going in to see Shachou, right?” He asks, stretching. you stand and nod, giving him a look.

”Where are you going?” you ask, picking up your bag. He groans at the way his back pops as he rights himself from his stretching.

”Home. I only came here 'cause I was bored. But in the long run, it’ll be a lot funnier if Kunikida’s mad all morning when I don’t show up~” He snickers. you shake your head, a smile pulling at your mouth.

“You’re so lame. See you, then.” You sighed, heading down the hall Kunikida and Fukuzawa had disappeared down.

”And yet you love me. ‘Till we meet again,” he calls, pointedly ignoring the yell you let out.

”Whatever!” you yelped, and Dazai let the agency door click closed behind him.

He grins. Curious indeed.

Honestly, with all that's been going on, I have been really careful when reading fics post Season 7. And rarely are they Buddie.

You are one of the few writers I trust enough to still read Buddie from, if it was set Post Season 7. I wouldn't expect you to have Buck cheat to start Buddie or have Tommy become a complete ooc asshole just to justify a breakup... somehow, so many Buddie writers now think that's the only way to have Buddie happen :(

Oh my god, you've hit one of my biggest pet peeves about fics in the aftermath of S7 - what is it with all the infidelity fics?! Like I've now seen multiple with the newly minted tag "Buckfidelity" and I'm just... this is a character you claim to love and enjoy and you're making his name synonymous with cheating? Obviously everyone can write and read what they enjoy but I genuinely don't understand how it's become so prevalent, especially in a fandom that is notoriously extremely harsh about the canon cheating storylines we've had.

So yeah I'm with you, I've been careful with what I'm reading post S7. I've found that the Bucktommy fics are just generally more joyful, which is what I prefer especially given how stressful this year has been for me. The buddie fics I've read are the ones I had on my to-read list before and never got around to.

At the moment, I can't see myself writing post-S7 buddie. Like I kind of flagged in that other post, its just not working for my brain. I'm not the kind of writer who sits and specifically tries to ideate a fic concept. Ideas come very naturally to me and the decision of whether to write it or not comes when I try to think through the idea and what I want to explore with it. I have had literally zero ideas about romantic buddie after S7 - maybe it goes back to that idea of joyfulness because I like to have an undercurrent of joy in my fics and I think a good post-S7 buddie fic would have to be very heavy to properly deal with the implications of Eddie's repressed grief and what it would mean for Buck to handle that.

I have still got a Buddie fic in the works, but it's in the mortifying ordeals 'verse. Otherwise the two S7-related WIPs I have are both Bucktommy (with bestie Eddie - and the last thing I'll say is that I think the other sad thing about this whole ship war is that there are so many opportunities to play around with bestie-Eddie/platonic life partner dynamics but its so rarely explored).

Got some fic exchange questions and notes on the feedback form (largely slightly paraphrased for brevity) that I wanted to talk about.

As per usual, feedback is appreciated.

Q: It would be helpful if people ranked their fic wishes in order of preference when signing up! A: Honestly, just passing this one straight on to you folks, lol. This isn't something I can hardcode into the form itself without turning it into an overly complex clusterfuck, but I'll see if I can mention somewhere that this is a helpful thing to do.

Q: I would like to see a specifically platonic analogue to the "ships you'd like to read about" question in the sign-up form. A: Very fair point, especially given the amount of people who do ask for gen fics specifically; should be easy enough to implement.

Q: Can we get an automatic email with our signup form content? A: I'll have to play around with it some and figure out if I can turn that feature on without requiring emails from everyone. Thing is, I know it'd be useful (for me, too, because that would save me a LOT of "hey your sign-up went through" messages) but I also absolutely do not want to make email address collection mandatory. Ideally, I don't want to see anyone's email addresses at all if I can help it. TL;DR - Maybe? I'll see what I can figure out. Also super interested in you folks' opinions here, because this is a privacy issue at its core.

Q: How do pinch hitters and mentors work? A: You sign up for it over the fic exchange sign-up form (does not require participation in the actual fic exchange) and when I need someone, I contact the folks who have signed up for it privately. I don't like sending out calls for pinch hitters publicly, because I'd like to obfuscate who dropped out when at least a little bit, and since we rarely have more than three pinch hitters, the extra time spent contacting them individually is pretty much nil. The same holds true for mentors, less for privacy reasons and more because contacting people individually is just more reliable at the scales I'm working with here - but nobody's ever actually asked for a writing mentor before anyway.

Q: Can we ask for specific people to NOT be matched with? A: I try to honor requests like that, but due to the diminutive size of the fic exchange, I absolutely cannot ever guarantee it, and the more people voice requests like this, the less likely it gets that it'll actually work out like that. Very good and valid question though; it'll be added to one of the official posts for next time.

Q: All fic exchange related communication should happen on tumblr. Failing that, the fic exchange should not be on tumblr at all. A: All organizational fic exchange related communication does happen on tumblr and gets cross-posted to discord after the fact (see, for instance, this post), or happens in private messages to participants, where I don't differentiate between tumblr DMs and discord DMs. I do not control what other people talk about on discord beyond official communication. I also monitor fic exchange chatter on tumblr and discord equally, which is why we do have a dedicated fic exchange tag that people are free to use for this exact purpose! Now, while I will not take the nuclear option of excluding anyone who isn't on discord (we have plenty of participants who are not on discord, and I think excluding them all because one sole person requested for them to be excluded would absolutely not be fair), I'm always interested in improving communication and gathering more opinions, so if anyone else thinks this fic exchange shouldn't be open to folks on tumblr... tell me about it. Q: You should get a co-mod! A: That'd be neat! There's plenty of fic exchange work that's a little dull and tedious and would be pretty glorious to just delegate. Here's the issue I've run into so far: I don't really need help with the actual mod part. The match-ups are an evening-filling activity once per fic exchange, yes, but making time for that isn't really a factor; that's the kind of stuff I do for fun. That aside, managing people while they're writing and posting isn't as time-consuming as you'd think. The stuff that's hard and time-consuming and something I'd actually love some help with is the real riveting administrative shit like:

making the graphics (requires specific custom fonts and decent photoshop skills and a software that can open .psd files).

updating the rules and deadlines post (requires knowledge about what needs updating, which makes it a PITA to delegate).

figuring out timings (polls are helpful here, but someone has to set those up and decide on parameters, too).

creating the pinned post with the link overview (that needs to be edited like half a dozen times to add all the links, sigh).

... and also all manners of introduction and announcement posts.

just. so much linking of resources. SO MUCH cross-linking.

making the assignment documents and sending them out.

creating random stuff that comes up, like the feedback form.

spreadsheets to track participants, who's writing for whom, who's posted/received their fic yet, who signed up as pinch hitter or mentor and so on.

dealing with the responsibility of the whole thing, honestly, because if something ever goes wrong it's my ass on the line, and I'd be lying if I said I've never lost sleep about that.

prolly a bunch of other stuff along the same lines I forgot about.

Now, if anyone manages to figure out how to help me with any of that (caveat: anyone who sees the sign-up documents cannot also be participating in the fic exchange and is sworn to absolute complete dead-silence secrecy about the whole thing) while also not requiring access to my tumblr blog, tell me about it and maybe we can work something out! As it is, I simply haven't really figured out how to delegate any of this stuff, especially not without adding workload instead of making stuff easier.

For what it's worth, one thing everyone can do that's massively helpful is telling me when I've screwed something up. I do have people look over anything official-ish these days, but knowing that you folks are keeping an eye out for stuff that doesn't look quite right is genuinely very helpful, too.

I normally don’t make my own posts on here because of certain reasons however i do want to say something about the newest Planet Of the Apes movie.

Specifically the shipping. The shipping of the MC Noa and the human character Mae.

Stop here if you don’t wanna get spoiled about the movie or if you’re already hating what might be said.

TW for: general cursing, mentions of incest and sexual stuff.

To clarify, i love interspecies relationships. Ask any moots of mine or even look at what i reblog when it comes to those types of ships.

However seeing this ship has rubbed me the wrong way.

I haven’t seen the movie, I’m planning to just not in theaters, but ive gone through the POTA tag on both here and on tiktok. From what I’ve seen and gathered the arguments for this ship are “look! They have chemistry! Noa wouldn’t have done all this for Mae if he didn’t like or have some feelings for her!” “the cast and crew hinted a love story for them!” And even “if you hate this ship even though you like interspecies, youre a hypocrite”

But i have some thoughts on all of this.

1) Chemistry doesn’t mean romance. Two or more characters can have the most amazing chemistry and still likely be friends or platonic soulmates/kindred spirits. And that’s what I’m most likely leaning towards when it comes to these two characters.

Yes they have long gazes, yes he saves her and she saves him, yes they both look up at the stars at the end. But i feel like that’s what two people may go through if they’ve went through the events Noa and Mae have gone through.

And if anyone thinks I’m not for this ship because of the lack of sexual nature of these two then get out. Leave. Block me. I may reblog funni haha horni posts but that’s not all of my damn personality. Thinking that is inherently gross.

2) The interspecies aspect is… odd. Mainly cause I don’t think these two are a interspecies relationship at all. Genetically we share a lot of DNA with primates. Culturally the apes in the current movie are currently going through their own age of civilization that can be comparable to pre Sumeria. They’re developing their own tools, customs, language, are training animals for hunting and are gathering. While interesting from an anthropological perspective they’re evolving the same way humans have.

You can apply the last bit to any fictional species but to me its like watching a distant cousin learning how to ride a bike.

I would deem interspecies romance as shipping characters that aren’t related to the human race at all. Apes and us shared a common ancestor. So, not interspecies.

3) This entire franchise may be fictional… but that’s what worries me. People as of late will shut off their brain if it means shipping something that is obviously problematic.

Case in point? House of Dragons.

I will not touch that show because of the shipping wars. I hated watching tumblr go googly eyed for when a young teenage Rhyneara was crushing over her uncle. Hell i even saw a post where someone got a pic from a trailer that showed a hand over hers and going ‘oh my god guys shes finally gonna bone her uncle!!’ As if incest was suddenly okay even from a literary standpoint. Even if it happened in the lore and books. This is why I think the entirety of The Game of Thrones universe should not have been created.

But this is what we have been seeing.

Just because something is fictional doesn’t mean it can’t happen in real life. And if we normalize something that should remain fictional people are gonna think its okay.

TLDR; I will only see Mae and Noa as platonic soul mates. And that will remain unless something happens where its not gonna be problematic.

Oh! And please don’t bring up the Harkness test when it comes to the validity of this ship. That’s a whole other rant for a whole other day.

everytime someone brings up "hey why does danny call julie sweetie if he is supposedly dating maria" people always say "uhm its common in the south in the 70s for old women to call everyone petnames" or "uhm julie calls the girls babe does that mean shes dating them too".

and, it just genuinely frustrates me.

first of all, danny and le.land are not old women. they are 21 and 18 year old men, respectively. saying "sweetie" is common for older women to use as an endearing pet name doesn't apply when the people using the petnames are teenage/young adult men?

also, even IF you use that as your reasoning, why then does le.land not call connie or julie sweetie? why does danny not call connie or ana sweetie?

danny ONLY addresses julie with the petname, no one else in their group.

le.land ONLY addresses ana with the petname, no one else in their group.

some people then use the argument that le.land is older than ana (by a year) and was friends with maria (her older sister), so he sees ana as a younger sister figure too and is using it platonically in that way and that's why he doesn't call any of the other girls petnames because the other girls are older than him. that'a fair, but still fails to explain why danny (21, oldest in the group) only addresses julie, specifically with the petname, when she is the same age as him.

then when you get into "julie calls the girls ____", "ana calls julie _____". whether or not you hc any of the group as lgbtq (which i do, lol) - you cannot hold the girls saying those names to their other female friends to the same standard as young men saying those names to one specific girl in their friend group each? as much as i'd like to say hell yea, equality!!!! it just doesn't make sense for the character personalities (strong headed 18 yr old jock, rough around the edges guy from the wrong side of the tracks) that GUN wants to push for le.land and danny to have, for them to use petnames in the same way that a hyper feminine girl from cali would use them.

as a side note, i have seen many people say that if they (maria) heard their boyfriend (danny) calling one of the other girls in their friendgroup (julie) sweetie like that, that they would be very uncomfortable which makes sense because sweetie is almost always used, in the context of a young man and woman together, romantically. absolutely no one is saying that the term is ALWAYS romantic or the petnames ALWAYS are romantic in general, but within the context of the group and their personalities, it is a very odd choice by GUN to have each guy single one girl out with the petnames.

in horror movies as well, it's extremely common for there to be 1 or more couples within friend groups, that's just common tropes, even within the original tcm film there is kirk and pam, and sally and jerry then franklin tagging along.

to me, in my honest opinion, it really seems that GUN originally planned to have ana and le.land as a couple, and julie and danny as a couple. i have no clue what happened between then and now, but even pre-release one of the devs had posted "maaaaybe" in reply to someone asking if le.land and ana were dating, which of course originally set people into thinking that they were. obviously, that was not a confirmation of that, but it was misleading if the answer was firmly no. i just think they had other plans in mind for the victims but already had voicelines recorded. i'm sure in the upcoming lore stream they will give some half assed reason like "oh julie is marias bff so danny calls her sweetie cuz maria liked her" or something, but oh well.

i just wanna like my ships in peace without people throwing that stuff at me. at the end of the day they are my ocs anyway, and GUN lore is sloppy and half assed anyway so we ignore most of it. the pals all date and kiss and smooch and thats it

🍇 Is there a particular scene/episode/book/etc that you want to just write a million fics about, over and over? Which one?

This is a difficult question for me because I think, in general, I'm more of a "missing scene" writer where I prefer to use my fanfictions to fill in plot holes and/or explore things that the canon didn't (i.e. how did certain characters react to certain events or how did these two characters even become friends with each other in the first place?). I also write a ton of post-canon fics resolving those loose ends that the endings of things left open to interpretation. For instance, I have written a lot about Finral and Langris repairing their brotherly relationship in the future and resolving to break the cycle and be better parents to their own kids someday.

I'm not sure I have a lot of fics that take place during a specific scene we actually got to see happen in the canon. I have written a few that take place during scenes we know happened/that were talked about but just happened off screen (i.e. "2AM" [OMORI]) or scenes that were (heavily) implied to have happened ("Faulty Wires and Empty Spaces" [YTTD]) but aside from a few brief moments (like the flashforward at the end of my Finral/Finesse fic "I'll Be Waiting") or "A Mixer Mix-Up" (which is a time-travel fic that takes place entirely during Finral's mixer at the beginning of BC) I don't think I've really written a lot of fics that take place during a specific scene, chapter, or episode of anything.

That said I think I'll just answer about what scenes have had the biggest impact on me and my writing and (totally showing my bias for my beloved Spatial Mage Brothers) I'd have to say Langris and Finral's face-off during the Royal Knights Exam and especially that extended flashback of their childhood is probably the big one for me (Shout out to Finral's childhood flashback in the Underwater Temple Arc too!!). Related to that is, of course, its continuation during the Elf Arc where the brothers face off again and, especially, that moment Finral finally gets through to Langris and we get to see how vulnerable and lonely he is.

Even though I don't think I've ever really written a fic that takes place during these events (at least not one that I've posted anywhere 😅), I think these two instances really shape how I interpret both Finral and Langris as characters and also how them and their relationship with each other.

🍏 Is there something you overuse, whether it’s a certain phrase, trope, or piece of punctuation?

I answered this here if you want to see the full discussion, but I certain fall into a lot of repetitive pitfalls as a writer. One I'd add to the list that I hadn't mentioned already is the characters "sigh" and "chuckle" all the time. 🤦‍♀️ It's in my quest to avoid dialogue tags, which I think I also tend to overuse, but yeah I need to get a little more creative in this category, I think.

Also, I think I've referenced the same song that reminds me of a particular ship in multiple different fanfictions about them. 😅 (But that's not for Black Clover so at least you are spared that one 😁)

🫐 What’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (A ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)

I answered this too, unfortunately (sorry about that 😅), but pretty much anything with Langris and Finesse whether as individuals or especially their dynamic with each other (regardless of whether it's in a romantic or platonic way) is a particular favorite but very underrated in my opinion. I think they're both really interesting and have an interesting relationship, and I feel like there is a lot of untapped potential there that isn't explored enough in the canon or in fanworks.

I'd also like to add Charmy in here too, and not just because Rillmy can be a little underrated as a pairing sometimes (though I certainly feel that way at times) but also because I feel like a lot of times Charmy is kind of just shoved into the background and played for laughs as a feral, food-obsessed gremlin and while she can definitely be a feral food-obsessed gremlin sometimes, I feel like there is a lot more to her and to her character than just that. I love exploring Charmy's friendships with the Black Bulls especially Vanessa and Finral and just kind of giving her a little more room to breathe as a dynamic, capable, surprisingly shrewd, and kind of snarky character who is honest but really loves her friends.

Perceptions & Adherence to HCs & Canons:

I write according to my own perceptions of Rise of the Guardians and the world at large. They might not match yours.

Additionally, I don't write with 100% adherence to the Guardians of Childhood book series, because a) I don't care that much for it and b) you could not convince me that it's canon to the movie given that the characters are all very different to what they are in Rise of the Guardians.

There are some things which I might draw on from the books - like Pitch being formerly known as Kozmotis - or the Rufftoon comics - like Pitch not wearing just some skimpy, flat-ass robe for his entire existence as a spirit -, or maybe the FrogsForTea ones - I'm thinking of that "Fear the Chef" drawing -, but only if and when I feel like it adds rather than takes away from the character(s) of the movie.

Obviously, I don't own Pitch Black or other Rise of the Guardians characters. If I did, Pitch would canonically have a cat for a pet and he wouldn't be possessed (iykyk). Which he won't be in my scenarios and headcanons, anyway. Autonomous choices allow for more nuanced characterisation and more satisfying developments. Possession is boring, kids.

Also, cussing might make its way into headcanons and some scenarios... but some characters won't swear much, if at all, whilst others will swear like sailors. So, yeah, uh... watch out for that.

Things I Don't Write (SFW Edition):

I won't write about minors in a main character capacity, because I just don't care for it. Any character that is canonically a minor will have to be aged up even in perfectly sfw, platonic scenarios. Any character who remains a minor will only feature in a very minor way. Flashbacks to character's childhoods in scenarios, hcs, multi-chapter stories are fine, but they won't be extensive.

Pregnancy. Shortly-after-birth is kinda' fine if it's part of couple head-canons, but I won't go into detail on anything, because pregnancies squick me out.

Certain ships - I'll have separates posts on that. I will tag them, though. Don't push them on me. Also, this is not to offend anyone, but for my comfort and health, I do block out certain tags including ship tags, but also certain accounts that are actively invested in certain ships. This is nothing against those accounts as people.

Sandman as a cinnamon-roll. Or as a main character/possible match up. He just makes me deeply uncomfortable. No, I'm not mixing up Mr. Tall, Dark & Lanky. If you don't think Sandy has a mean-streak, I'm probably the wrong writer to ask for content involving him anyway.

North as a main character. I won't write head-canons/scenarios specifically about him. Maybe about his perceptions of certain people, but not him specifically.

Romantic/spicy ships between characters that are not (at the point of shipping) 18+.

Characters outside of the Rise of the Guardians-verse, unless it's as part of a crossover. (I wouldn't write for characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame for instance, unless I were to do a crossover between RotG and tHoND.)

On NSFW Stuff:

I'm not opposed to NSFW, but such content will be tagged. Also, there will be separate rules/guidelines posted for NSFW asks and content at some point, which will be tagged appropriately. Do read that before asking for such things. NSFW content is strictly 18+ though, so I would recommend anyone who isn't comfortable or 18+ to filter out "nsfw" as a tag.

There are ways to have other things that happened not happen, and him still fall. When people expect me to adapt to fix-its, it can make me lose motivation for days at a time. Going on 5 days now.

i really love to read your long posts because your perspective is always so interesting and understandable even when i don’t agree. but this time i totally do and “defanged friendship” is suchhhhh a good way of putting it because. yeah. i find this a lot with platonic relationships (and also, annoyingly, f/f ones) that fans and sometimes the writers completely water them down over time to zero substance whatsoever. just comfortable unproblematic ocs that have their names. and that’s all you have to consume when content about them is already so scarce + this leads to people who aren’t really into those relationships reading one (1) uninteresting fic and blanket labelling all content under that label as boring and stupid and hobbling back to their plentiful supply of allo m/m feeling justified in their unwillingness to give other content a try. anyway. strictly platonic relationships can be so interesting if you just let them keep their claws!!!! and this is why i love bsd so so much bc there are (canonically) strictly platonic relationships that are so messy and i have devoured literally every fic in the dazai & atsushi dazai & akutagawa atsushi & kyouka platonic sskk tags etc…. and it’s brilliant. i just wish people could champion platonic relationships without sanitizing them

i rarely draw too hard of a line between what i do and don't ship (i'm generally looking for specific resonances + interpretations that are only tangential to that specific division), which means that if i'm invested in the dynamic between two characters i tend to end up scouring both / and & tags. therefore i end up with a lot of thoughts on the differences between how they're portrayed between the two, + a lot of disappointment when it comes to sanitization and stripping-of-complexity on platonic interpretations when i would most often prefer that dynamic as without sex/romance.

(in some cases it probably comes with more of a willingness to engage with problematic material in / tags...? and a lack of that willingness in & tags given that platonic dynamics can be viewed as the safe option. in an adjacent way, i think f/f falls into the trap of being sanitized via like the whole. winces. moralizing perception of f/f as a "eat your vegetables to prove you're not misogynistic; women are pure and holy and good to each other" thing (-> m/m has its own cardboard-cutout templates which i am frustrated by, but the genre norms are different, i think relatedly to this.)

which is to say though that, yeah—)

it is such a flawed perception that comes from the outside-looking-in wrt seeing that style of relationship as boring, and it forever makes me a little cross when people take fandom trends as an excuse to simply not try with either genfic or f/f, and/or to automatically dismiss them. platonic dynamics and femslash both have so much potential when they're not declawed and when the canon complexity gets to sit there between characters!!! they're both always so intriguing to me!!!

bsd is literally evidence of that re:platonic dynamics, you're so right; beyond that, i think it's. in general, again, the perception of & dynamics as "safe" compared to / dynamics gets underneath my skin, which is why i so often phrase it as "get worse about it". i prefer most relationships as lacking romance in my fandom engagement + i get frustrated by how those often-canonically-complex dynamics come off as healthier+safer in attempt to make them platonic, when they canonically don't have to be and they often canonically cross the boundaries that fandom constructs around what behavior is romantic vs platonic. and. let them keep their claws forever. gestures.

the thing is that both archetypical romance and defanged friendship (and sometimes equally defanged family!) are very very boring as a lens to look those dynamics through to meeee because people think u can't keep the intensity+tension+antagonism in there and/or will flinch from those traits, and i am here for. well. that. no-romo/complicated-in-some-way sex can work to get what i want (and is often where ppl are playing into those traits; something something bad sex choices can be so important) but i literally don't even want that most of the time pause. keyword most, i just want characters to be messy and nightmare 😭😭😭 anyway tldr we should all get worse and weirder and accept that horrible intensity should not be solely the realm of romance/sex o7 platonic-ify ur dynamics and be interesting about it o7

ive been calling c! beeduos relationship platonic because i thought that was what their cc’s said, and i thought they had said that they were uncomfortable with ppl shipping the characters. But ive seen a lot of posts that say their relationship is canonically romantic? and i absolutely do not want to come across as homophobic by watering down a mlm relationship to just friends because that happens so much in media so.

what is the canon state of their relationship / ur opinions on the platonic thibg

aw it’s totally fine, im flattered you asked me about this!

let me put it simply: it’s a whole mess, lol.

first im going to talk about what’s happened fandom-wide that caused differing opinions, and then i’ll explain my own opinion/interpretation. :]

(this got really fucking long im so sorry)

ranboo and tubbo initially proclaimed the relationship was romantic, specifically in argument with the wiki editors who had set it as platonic by default. (you can see this in the vod where they decide they’re canonically married— it’s very funny. chat tells them the marriage is already on the wiki, they check, tubbo is jokingly offended that it says platonic and asks if he needs to up the romance).

tubbo also makes jokes about adultry, which sort of implies the relationship is not necessarily a platonic one.

(theres definetly more in that stream alone but it’s been a long time since i watched it so i don’t remember a lot of it.)

the wiki, because of this, suffers from going back and forth on platonic and romantic, seemingly unsure where the joke ends and the canon begins, or if its canonically a joke! a mess, as you can already tell.

this gets more complicated as the marriage bit goes on: outsiders, such as phil and scott, both at one point say “platonic marriage”, which then ranboo and tubbo agree with. however, when chat asks them if they’re platonic, they say the opposite. so there is a lot of confusion there.

there’s also the difficulty of being able to tell streamers and characters apart. ranboo and tubbo both don’t like being shipped irl, and that’s their boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. (they’re also minors, but tbh when they’re 18 in a year i will still be following their boundaries regardless of their legal age).

due to people not wanting to be accused of minor shipping, they started adding the platonic tone indicator to most of their drawings— basically a way of saying “no homo”. meanwhile, tubbo frequently on stream flirts with ranboo and makes quite a bit of nsfw comments towards him that are frankly hilarious.

this goes on for a while with nobody really sure what’s canon, but a lot of people assuming it’s probably platonic, until: the drama of the mods night. a few mods dmed all the wiki editors telling them ranboo wanted his canon character relationship officially set to platonic.

unfortunately for those mods; the very same day, a few hours later, ranboo on stream makes fun of puffy delivering him and tubbo “friendship flowers”. because, and i quote, “bruh. we’re literally married. this must be how the ancient greeks felt.”

in case you don’t know, the internet often jokes about how historians will call ancient greeks ‘very good friends’ when they are quite obviously gay. so in this context, ranboo is joking that people will call him and c!tubbo, who are married, “close friends”, when he doesn’t think they are.

basically, ranboo canonized romantic bee duo, the very same day the mods told everyone he’d wanted a platonic one.

chaos and drama immediately erupted everywhere. on tumblr, we were talking about how weird it was of his mods to do something like that without asking him first. we ALSO talked about how weird it was of them to assume that ranboo can’t make his own decisions, or assume teenagers cannot be in relationships without it being sexual. twitter did the same thing but in the opposite direction: called ranboo mods homophobic, or said they were mad ranboo felt pressured into making a romantic relationship canon ‘just so people could have mlm rep.’

i dont want to go into detail about the drama that happened that night because apparently official people follow me and i dont want to stir it up or have them come “clarify” things. im just saying what we talked about.

ranboo in typical ranboo fashion apologized quickly and seriously. he was deeply sorry for possibly offending anyone with how he’d portrayed his rp relationship with tubbo, and he also assured everyone the mod thing was just a miscommunication.

he said he would talk to tubbo and they’d decide once and for all whether it was platonic or romantic, and then announce so everyone would know.

it’s now been a few months and we've had no word from them on that development. we still have no clue.

now, here’s my opinion:

i want to take ranboos word for it that it was a miscommunication with his mods, but... we had it on good authority from people on the wiki team and people in the discord with the mods that (while it was happening) they were really going after the wiki admins, and also made some weird comments about it. that combined with the way ranboo seemingly had no clue (considering he canonized their romance that very same day).... it’s very. sus of the mods.

then there’s the canon we’ve got since then. although occasionally adults in the room have called it a “platonic marriage” and tubbo once (back when it first started) called it a “plankton tectonic” marriage, in roleplay it’s been... kind of not that. tubbo and ranboo make nsfw jokes about each other in character, and their characters also share a master bedroom and bed in the mansion. there's also the way c!tommy really thinks it’s a romance between them as well, and they agree with and play off that— for instance confirming that they “fell in love” when he asked, or ranboo confirming that they “make out on occasion”.

people will still put platonic on their art and posts, imo, because they’re worried about breaking ranboo and tubbo’s irl boundaries by looking like they ship them. or even just being accused of shipping real life minors. and that’s a valid fear to have.

the thing is though: c!bee duo are not cc!bee duo. they’re roleplay characters. cc!bee duo are not okay with being shipped, but they made their characters get canonically married, and call each other “husbands”. so it’s okay to write the word “husband” in your comic without adding “platonic” to it, i promise.

telling the ccs that their characters have to be platonic is... weird. it comes off as not only babying them, but also as saying teens can’t date without it being gross. which isn’t true.

(this is why seeing people overuse “platonic husband” so much bothers me. like, they ARE husbands. you can just say it. what are you trying to hide...?)

do i think they’re canonically romantic? ehh, its likely. it’s still okay to interpret them as platonic, because again, it’s hard to tell where jokes end and roleplay begins. like, maybe it’s jokes in the rp too, and c!bee duo are just friends. friends can and should be allowed to make jokes like that with each other! aro & ace marriages exist!

or, maybe it’s actually part of the rp, and they’re very much romantic. we don’t know!

some people say they could be a qpr (queerplatonic romance), which i could see. (a qpr is a relationship that fluctuates between, or can’t quite be sorted into, “romantic” and “platonic”. people in a qpr can do romantic things while having platonic feelings for each other). in my opinion this is a very valid interpretation as well!

ehhh? i find it annoying when it’s overused (as do others), but if you’re worried you can. its up to preference. putting it too much is weird though

no. you’re not the one saying it so you can’t decide the tone tags for that. imagine you said something to your friend and a random stranger came up and was like “haha but that was /p right...?”

mmm. i’m not sure on this one. they are canonically married and very flirtatious, but the ccs don’t like being shipped and they’re close enough to being the ccs that actively shipping might be against boundaries.

can i treat c!bee duo as romantic?

yes. literally just don’t be weird about it. it’s not that hard! you can understand that two characters are husbands without making it weird

here’s the most important thing: boundaries. cc bee duo still haven’t told us what their preferences and canon is about this whole thing.

right now, i am assuming based on what they already show us they’re comfortable with, but! the second they give us any more info! all these opinions will change!

i am only going off what they do. i would never want to cross boundaries at all. i just wish they would make theirs a little more clear.

also, I have no interest in policing what you ship, but, like. when you're specifically coming onto other people's posts about it. when you're coming onto other people's posts that aren't about shipping. then there's a different fucking etiquette there! there's a different etiquette than what would apply if you were you're making your own posts about your ship!

it's like. imagine you saw the relationship between characters X and Y as romantic, and let's say you made a post about that relationship through a romantic lens. it would be fucking rude of me to come onto that post and tag it: "#yess i love their PLATONIC relationship so much! this post hits so different knowing how canon their PLATONIC relationship is! #platonic ship name #old man friendship."

surely, we can all agree that that would be rude. and that it would be inconsiderate in a way that, on the other hand, me posting about platonic relationships on my own blog would not be inconsiderate. because there is different etiquette for liking an interpretation of a relationship, and foisting that interpretation on other people's posts. it does not get less rude if you swap "romantic" and "platonic" in the above scenario.

or similarly. let's say you're still seeing X and Y as romantic, but let's say you just made a post gushing about X's backstory. before they met Y, who isn't even mentioned in this post. you value the romantic interpretation, but that's not what this particular post is about, because X's backstory is compelling in its own right. and perhaps, perhaps, you might even think: "this post isn't about X and Y, just X. so I shouldn't have to worry about people derailing it to be about how X and Y are objectively platonic, like what happens to every one of my romantic posts. right? right?"

but one of the same people swoops in again. and says: "#op HOW could you forget to mention? #that X even has a PLATONIC RELATIONSHIP with Y?? #how can we even TALK about X without bringing up how canonically PLATONIC he and Y are??? #it's literally the MOST important part of X's character - like yeah their backstory is so interesting - but what's the POINT if you're not talking about the PLATONIC relationship too????"

this person above would be rude. it would be rude in a way that making their own posts about platonic relationships would not be. you would be completely justified in wanting this behavior to stop. but, once again, it does not get any less rude if you swap "romantic" and "platonic" in the above scenario.

both of the above are just scenarios that have happened to me, except with "romantic" and "platonic" swapped. (the only artistic liberty I'm taking is fusing it all into hypothetical tumblr tags, when in reality, some of it's actually happened in comments on my fics. gen fics with the & tag. talk about a nightmare.) it's rude, and I'm tired. I don't think people are doing it out of malice, or any conscious intention to be rude — but that doesn't mean it's not exhausting. that doesn't mean I won't block people over it, for my own health. it does mean I will never write a fic about a certain formerly beloved character again.

also, at risk of making it even more obvious what fandom I'm talking about — all of these comments are about a ship that wasn't triggering to me, personally, but is triggering to a lot of people. I am "just" squicked out by it for a few personal reasons. but there are other people who are legitimately triggered by it. if you know the ship I'm talking about, and most of you do, you know why.

Ship mentions cannot be blacklisted or filtered in your own notifications. Read that sentence again. Remember it. Think about it when you're writing about ships in the tags. Think about it when you're writing about abusive ships in the tags. Internalize it. Remember it.

I'm not saying you can't explore abusive relationships in fiction, so don't put words of that kind into my mouth. It's your business, and I have no desire to interfere in your business. But stop making it my business. Stop putting that ship in my fucking notifications. Stop putting that ship in any internet stranger's notifications, if you don't know they're okay with it. Please.

guess I have to reiterate for the hundredth time that I do not want anyone bringing up ships on my non-shipping posts, unless you're a follower or friend who knows for a fact that I don't mind the ship in question. like I don't want to block people over this, but my ability to enjoy using this website is contingent on either people not doing this, or me aggressively curating my experience by blocking people over this. sorry but also not really.
